This spacious College Street theatre is part "intimate" music venue and part dance club – evenings showcase "little-known acts" and "stylish" "local or overseas" bands before late-night mod crowds roll in to "dance to electro beats", Brit-rock and retro tunes; opinions are split on the service ("awesome" vs. "meh"), but for most it's "usually a fun night."
Everything at these stores arrived via fair-trade programs, so the artisans who make the items benefit directly from the sale of their work. In addition to hand-crafted housewares, there are jewelry, toys, Palestinian olive oil, Shea-butter skin-care products, and really good Brazil nuts. There are also branches at 474 Bloor St. W. (tel. 416/533-8476 ) and 362 Danforth Ave. (tel. 416/462-9779 ).
This is a large and loud club with a great atmosphere for anyone wanting to go nuts to ‘90s Britpop, retro, alternative, and on occasion, anything else. Check weekly listings for specific nights. There’s usually a cover (Saturday nights here are $10), but you can skip the line if you and friends register online for their guest list.
If you dig live gigs, then this is where you'll want to be. Brit Indie, rock, pop and electronic - you'll find it all here at the Mod Club. Live international bands often do the rounds and so do regular clubbers. This is primarily a dance club, so if you like it loud then you will feel quite at home at this high tech venue.
