Schwartz's, also known as the Montreal Hebrew Delicatessen is a delicatessen established in 1928 by Reuben Schwartz, a Jewish immigrant from Romania.
You cannot come to Montreal and NOT eat here. It would be just wrong. :)
Any time I'm in Montreal, Schwartz's is a must stop. Love the massive smoked meat sandwiches! If your visiting Montreal, do yourself a favor and stop in.
I'm drooling as I write this review. This place has the best montreal smoked meat I've ever had. Piping hot stack of smoked meat on thin rye and wonderfully well spiced. There's enough meat for 3 or 4 sandwiches in my opinion. Worth the effort to visit here when you're in Montreal.

Forget the line up this place has gone down hill and the owners do not care.. the cost of spice is up and thus they have cut back sooo much that the taste is gone. The qulity of the beef is now tough. Told the owners and they just don't care.. as long as the line ups are long the taste will keep getting poorer. Wow I have been coming here for over 40 years and I have watched the food get poorer... more
Tried the carryout because the line to get in the main restaurant was out the door and another 30 feet. Maybe my expectations were too high but the smoked meat sandwich tasted like any you might get somewhere else. Fine but not exceptional.
I was at Schwartz's about 2 months ago when I was visiting Montreal, and that will be my final time there. I ave been told that the quality of the both the service and the meals has been dwindling over the years, however, when I passed by and saw the lineup outside the restaurant I thought to myself: "How bad... more

Ca vaut quand... more
One of Montreal's great culinary institutions, this cramped, somewhat dingy deli, Schwartz's, makes the smoked meat (Montreal's version of pastrami) to which all others are compared. The line can be horrendous on weekends, the service is impersonal at best, and you are likely to be shoehorned into a table with a gaggle of total strangers. That said, the classic meal of a smoked meat sandwich,... more
A True Montreal Institution When you walk past the door of the restaurant, you’re going back in time by decades. Founded in 1928 by Reuben Schwartz, a Jewish immigrant from Romania, the restaurant has a unique dining room with many rows of long narrow tables. It’s always filled to capacity for both lunch and supper. Barely renovated over time, the décor has kept its original character. ... more
Schwartz's is hands down the best smoked meat deli in Montreal, and better then any I've been to in New York City. The selection of smoked meats is impressive and everything is freshly cooked and cut to order. The atmosphere is similar to that of almost every diner, but the food and service is great. Plus it's very easy to find, just a few blocks up from Milton and usually always a line out the... more
