Set in an array of Victorian rowhouses, Sassafraz has evolved through the decades to become a magical space in the heart of historic Yorkville. Located at the corner of Bellair and Cumberland, the little yellow house has "seen it all" from the early hippie movement of the 60's to the lack of movement that comes from too much Bordeaux. Love it for lunch - not my first pic for dinner. The Sangria is to die for and they have wonderful pasta dishes plus the venue is super posh. Food quality isn't my favorite though
For the reputation this place has it's really not that great. The Restaurant is gorgeous I'll give it that, and the Sangria is Amazing. But the menu is very limited and portions are super small. If you want to have a drink on the patio and people watch in Yorkville it's great but I wouldn't recommend it for dinner.
Emerged from the ashes after a fire in December 2006, Sassafraz has maintained its corner landmark status at the avenues of Cumberland and Bellair. Equivalent of LA's The Ivy, the rich, famous and wannabes remain to see and be seen, all within air kissing distance. Inside, the setting is more subdued and minimalist. A surefire mark during the film fest stalk hunt in September.
I've eaten here several times over last few years and the food/service is always consistenly good. I prefer the causal bistro side, but have ordered off the dining room menu on this side of the restaurant without any issue. The wine list is good and the service is attentive and friendly. I enjoy service that is relaxed, yet attentive.

We made our way to Yorkville to experience Sassafraz. We had a groupon and selected the wild board terrine and soup as appetizers followed by a 10 oz New York strip and the scallops as mains. The scallops melted in my mouth while my husband was very impressed with his steak. We enjoyed a wonderful Bordeaux and finished the meal... more
This upscale French-Canadian eatery in the posh Yorkville area draws crowds for the usual reasons - great food, service and ambiance. But you might get a bonus chance to catch a glimpse of celebs like Mick Jagger, Charles Bronson and Sylvester Stallone. Included under the same roof is the bistro, with live jazz. Dishes range from butter poached monkfish fillet and roasted Normandie duck breast... more
