It is worth coming here for the Half Pint [local brewery] Stir Stick Stout alone. Add in the perogies [as the spell it here] and you've got a meal! Server friendly, ambience low-key. They could lose the TVs, but I suppose people would have to talk to each other then.
Tavern is an apt name for Yellow Dog. It's a relaxed place somewhere between dive bar and lounge. Its location between the MTS Centre and the Exchange makes it a great meeting spot if you're going to a concert or other event downtown.
This quirky tavern would be right at home in Seattle or San Francisco. Simple adaptations of classic bar food make old favorites feel like home cooking. They have a good selection of craft brews on tap. No doubt a unique place this side of the Rockies.
I came here via yelp reviews. I had a spicy coconut Thai soup which was superb. A pear, feta cheese & walnut salad excellent! A garden burger made from scratch with guacamole, pesto mayo & lots of veggies.
The beer I had was really good, a little dog Scrapper IPA & a Humus Ludicrous double IPA. Both local beers. The service was excellent. A very friendly place I will visit again if I end up in...

Visited this place while in town for work based on Yelp reviews are well as reviews from Rate Beer Places - I like to explore the local beer scene when I travel. Canada does not have much in the way of a beer scene in terms of craft brewing, at least not like the States. And they love their bland beers. In general, Canadian beers are like this:
Pale Ale in Canada = Lager (or even a Pils) in...

A nice small fun bar, area a little rough but music and vibe is good
Street parking, park in a brightly lit place
I am not kidding about the rough area
Been a few times over last 2 years. Went again at lunch on Thursday with a client and raved so much about my California Club salad i brought my spouse back for dinner and we both shared a large California Club salad. It is so fresh and tasty. The combination of meat and greens and the honey mustard sauce just... more
I have been here twice and although the service has been mostly good and the atmosphere is great, what I have ate here hasn't been so good. I had the pulled pork the first time but found it to be too spicy, I'm not sure if it was mentioned on the menu, so it could've been my own fault. the... more
Decided to try this restaurant after the movie Chef, which left us craving a panini. We shared the pizza of the day, and the guys ordered the Philly cheesesteak. The pizza was good, but the cheesesteak was definitely better. It had really good flavor.
Have gone several times for lunch and love this place. It's so comfortable and homey. Also bustling and busy at lunchtime which, to me, says a lot about a place.
Food is good an plentiful, service is attentive without hovering and menu has something for everyone.
This is a place I go to frequently, mostly for the craft beer - although the food is great too. Some of the better pub fare in the city, and a great atmosphere. Service is hit and miss - some of the staff are a bit surly and uncomfortable to deal with, but others are fantastic.
For beer, they don't...

I totally agree with the other reviewers, this is a gem! Great atmosphere, good food, good service, local brews. Just what a local pub should be, wish there were more like this one.
The food is amazing!!
The servers aren't that friendly, almost like they don't want to be there..
Great place to go before a game or concert
I had some time to kill while waiting for family who were attending the Jets game. Had a beer and shepherds pie--the food was absolutely incredible. The crowds who were here were friendly and having fun. The serving staff superlative!
I will definitely be back!!!
If there were 6 more pubs like this in Winnipeg, the night life would be amazing. No pretension, super great food, the best pint of Guinness in the city, and just the best bar staff. I love this place.
Great food, good beer and a great atmosphere. Parking can sometimes be an issue. But, the restaurant once you get in is a great place to relax and meet up with friends.
Found behind the Burton Cummings theatre, this little spot has a good vibe and local music. Half Pints seasonals are on tap, and the occasional cask comes a calling. Other beer selection is nothing special, though by Winnipeg standards they are top tier. Solid pub grub is available.
Had lunch here on a work day. We ate in the cafe section. Lots of selection and, I think, very reasonably priced. Good selection of beer served by the half pint. There are soup and lunch specials that change every day posted on big blackboards. I had the Guinness Stew. It was served hot with a slice of garlic bread.... more
Drove into Winnipeg to go to Burton Cummings Theatre .Not sure of area we found good parking close by then we needed a quick bite to eat .Not knowing anyhing close we thought we would go into the yellow dog as it is the only place we could see within walking distance .
To be honest we were a little...

Great place! - good food, great service, and tasty local brew on tap. Divey type place but I think it needs 2 dollar signs - entrees are $10-$12 and drafts are about $5. That's not a $1 dollar sign to me. Would definitely come back!
Had nachos, and a few beers one night. Nice location, nice decor, nice feeling of being a place where "regulars" go. It was neat. So we returned again...not such a fantastic experience...Nickle and dimed over where we could sit and what we had to order...kind of strange...Apparently the pub and restaurant are separate, or licensed separately or something? So we... more
I went to the Yellowdog Tavern because they had perogies – I had spent my 5 days in the city looking unsuccessfully for them. The Tavern seems to be part pub, part café, and part restaurant. It has a very casual and comfortable feel to it. I wish I had found it at the beginning of my trip instead of... more
Some friends and I stopped in to have a few drinks before seeing a movie the other week. I decided I wasn't into the movie idea, so I stayed behind and got incredibly drunk by myself and it was awesome.
The place was pretty much dead because it was the middle of the week, so I got pretty good service obviously.
I loved the girls' washroom! Its such a cute little room and super super spacious....

I've stopped in here everytime I'm in Winnipeg for the last 5 years. Sure- it's an easy crawl from the hotel I stay in...but so is the Elephant & Castle...and the service is WAY better and more personal. The prices are super affordable. Food is good and it's just down right cozy! Go there!!
If great things come in small packages, great times occur in small places.
The Yellow Dog Tavern is a very small blues bar behind the Walker Theatre (Burton Cummings Theatre), on Donald. Its small quarters make the experience even more intimate and Greg, the friendly bartender, ensures your stay will be relaxed. They have a great deli next door that supplies great food to go along with the...

Simple, scratch-made food make The Yellow Dog Tavern the perfect place to have a pint and a plate. The downtown pub attracts a diverse clientele from business lunchers and creative types by day to studded leather punk-rock types after dark, all sharing an appreciation for no-frills, deep fryer-free pub fare. High top tables with bar stools and a cozy cluster of couches accommodate 70 in the... more
We are a local hidden favorite in the exchange district. Located 2 block from the MTS Center and behind the Burton Cummings Theater, we are a popular spot for pre and post drinks & grub.
We focus on homemade food and supporting local as much as possible.
