Draped in black with coloured fluorescent lights and corrugated metal highlights, Velvet has the bohemian-industrial chicness of a Berlin nightclub - without the smoke. Heavy catwalk boards hung overhead link the old Grand to the new Velvet in a zig-zag pattern, while the second-floor lobby houses a large, unisex washroom. The menu is contemporary Canadian, including smoked bacon-wrapped beef... more
Walking in, you're in a lobby of the theatre itself - cracked molding on the ceiling dates back to the original days of the theatre, as well as parts of the original floor you are walking upon.
Looking up there is a wonderful looking broken bottles chandelier that adds to the beautiful destruction upon entry.
Continue down the hall and you enter the lounge - all blue neon, mirrored steel and reflections everywhere; modern and ultra cool.
I sidle to the metal bar and order a double tanqueray tonic tall glass no ice, and am welcomed with a smile and an introduction.
The staff are warm and friendly, easy to speak with and a wealth of information when it comes to talking about the history of the theatre, as well as its nearby amenities.
Recommend >> their Alsatian Pastry is a great plate to share!
I will return often as it's on my way home from work and the ambiance exactly what I look for in a lounge or nightclub. But there is great food to be had here as well - the chefs will offer you ideas. Cheers
The ambience is built in with The Grand's re-imagined 1912 vaudeville theatre space - and the food keeps pace with... more
It was a question asked me twice by the time I sat down in the new lounge dining room fronting the renovated Grand Theat
Nice quiet place for lunch. Enjoy having some appetizers (love the charcuterie), a glass of wine, and the interesting breads(absent this last time - hmmm?). Very "conversationesc" type of place. Special Features:Great for Lunch ...
Overall, a highly satisfactory pre-theatre dininge experience. Food was fine, service attentive and ambiance good. If there is a criticism it is that the appetizers were huge to the point of taking away some of our appetite for the the ...
Great service it was nice to be able to reserve our theatre seat early and have a table and a drink ready for us at intermission. Special Features:Special Occasion ...
Yummy food. Decent wine list. Still not very busy. This place should be hopping for lunch, but is empty most times. Pity. Its better than the business flow would suggest. Special Features:Fit for Foodies ...
An excellent place to go if you are seeing a show at the Grand. It was a pleasant surprise that they offer to reserve a table for intermission, and had our dessert and coffee waiting. The food, wine, and service was all very good. ...
Went for business lunch - I had the ranch raised game burger and it was quite nice. The side of homemade chips wasn't bad either (the odd one was a bit soft though - I set those aside). The décor is fancy in a contemporary sort of way, ...
We went on Valentines Day - so this may not be a good time to review - but the atmosphere, the service and the food were all underwhelming. The worst of it all was the music. It sounded far off and quiet, and people were whispering. I hate that. I like a place with buzz.
Contemporary Canadian cuisine, in the middle of the Grand Theatre. Has a sexy, cool vibe and a unisex washroom. Signature dishes include tamarind glazed duck breast and Atlantic lobster club.
