The Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company is British Columbia’s premier theatre company, formed in 1962 in response to the Canada Council's funding initiative for regional theatre companies. Now in its 49th season, it became the principal tenant of the 655-seat Vancouver Playhouse Theatre, a civic building in the downtown core. A reputation for high standards and for doing interesting work has... more

Small venue, no bad seats. Right beside the QE Theatre, near downtown library. Nice lobby, seats are older, but comfortable enough (we attended a three hour performance). We were able to park on street, which was a surprise. Good access to transit.
Unfortunately funding dried up and The Vancouver Playhouse went bankrupt. Saw many first class productions over the years! Quite a sad symbol of the struggling arts scenes in Canada.
i have an annual membership. seen great drama, eg., wit. i'm not a fan of comedies, but the story about the making of 'gone w/ the wind' still lingers. local writer actor morris panach memorable. centrally located w/ parking under theatre. buy 'day of' tickets half-price if available. gourmet coffees and liquor served before and may be ordered for intermission.... more
The pre-opening night of RED was everything we could have expected. Excellent seats (not really a bad seat in the house), good accoustics, and the play itself was wonderful. Tickets were 33. for front row seating in the orchestra (maybe just that night?) - booked on line and held at box office. Theatre was central and easy to find. They... more
We have been seasons ticket holders for over 10 years and have rarely been disappointed. The variety of plays, the quality of the productions from acting, to sets to music - all superb. This is a highlight of the fall/winter for us each year and I would highly recommend it. Very affordable as well!
The Playhouse is a small intimate venue IMHO. It is definitely not a large as the QE Theatre, and most of the seats in the Playhouse are good seats, meaning there is a good sightline to the stage. I've never sat up closer than row 10 since I hate "looking up".
I've seen quite a few productions here from Dangerous Liasons, Hello Dolly, Moliere's Tartuffe, Le Misanthorpe, and L'École des femmes...

If you know the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, you know the Playhouse, they live side by side. But unless you've been to the theatre here, you might not know what awaits inside.
The theatre itself is mid-size, not large like the Orpheum, but not small like the Waterfront on Granville Island. I've been to a few shows here, have sat in the orchestra and balcony and I think that every seat is a good...

I agree with everything you have to say about the Playhouse! I used to work here and unfortunately the spirits are expensive. Not to be rude, the reason they don't have debit/credit machines is that there is only a 20min intermission and could you imagine trying to serve all the people in that time frame.
We've been BC’s premier regional theatre company since 1962.
Located beside the grand old Queen Elizabeth Theatre, the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre is its quieter, more demure partner. Built in 1962 by the city, the medium-sized Downtown facility features music recitals, chamber music concerts, contemporary dance, plays and business events. It seats 665 people and though less formal and elegant than the Queen Elizabeth, it is still a comfortable and... more
