I've always been impressed with the quality of the stagings and performances at the Vancouver Opera. The company produces both concert versions and fully staged operas, often sung by international stars. The season runs October through April, with performances in the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

Verdi's Don Carlo .. wow
July 07, 2014

We attended Vancouver Opera's production of Verdi's 'Don Carlo' at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver on 08 May 2014.

In one word, it was 'fantastic'!! And for us, such a great finale to this year's season!

The performances by all concerned were strong, and well-rewarded by the audience ... which was so "hushed" when they should be -... more

Don Giovanni, and the Vancouver Opera - a winning combination
March 07, 2014

We attended Mozart's 'Don Giovanni' at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver on 06 March, and once again, were thrilled and captured by the experience of attending another live Vancouver Opera production. This was the third in the series of four operas to be presented by the Vancouver Opera this season (2013-2014), and in every way, 'wow', it was a... more

Tosca -- and what a performance it was
November 07, 2013

Hurrah, the 2013-2014 season is underway!! We purchased a subscription this year, so four productions to look forward to.
We attended their first production - Puccini's 'Tosca' - on Halloween night. And "wow", what a great start to the season!!
Tosca ... dramatic, powerful, and musical, and Vancouver Opera's production sure did not let us down.
For the performance we... more

Innovative opera comnpany
April 12, 2013

Last saw Mozart's Magic Flute with a West Coast First Nations flavour; it was great and innovative.
I like that most of the performers are Canadian.
The company is not afraid to challenge the audience.
The live orchestra is top notch.

Not Magical - Opera for the Canadian crowd
March 17, 2013

200$ for 2 seats - I expected something good, at least.
I don't mind cultural mix too, a Native adaptation sounded great, but natives were not represented well in this low, british-Canadian adaptation of the magical flute...
Singers & orchestra :
Papageno, Pamina and Papagena were great. The Native tenor totally owned the main tenor (Tamino) and should have been... more

The Magic Flute captured us
March 15, 2013

We recently attended Mozart's 'The Magic Flute' (14 March), and once again, were thrilled and captured by the experience of attending another of Vancouver Opera's productions.
Seeing and hearing Vancouver Opera's unique take on this opera -- with it's west coast First Nations infusion into the creation and production, and some of the modern influences shown in the libretto, designs,... more

The Magic of Myth
March 10, 2013

For once I was drawn into a new take on an old opera, something that rarely works because it usually comes across as a pointless affectation and a way for people to "make their mark."
However, this transition fell so naturally into the aboriginal mythology, that I found the opera far more cohesive than the previous times I have seen... more

Confusing and disappointing
March 10, 2013

I have to completely disagree with you, though I am definitely no Opera buff. I found this production confusing and disjointed. This is the first Opera I have ever been to and it is making me never want to see one again.
As you said at the beginning, it really isn't the traditional Opera, which is actually really unfortunate.
First... more

Magic Flute 2013 is amazing
March 09, 2013

So I went to the opening night of Vancouver Opera's The Magic Flute on Saturday, and it was totally amazing! If you don't know, it is a West Coast themed Magic Flute, with the cast using First Nations consultants to design the production. It's not what you might expect, the costumes are so unique, they're both old style and very... more

Vancouver Opera introduced us to live opera - thanks
October 24, 2012

We have now attended, and thoroughly-enjoyed three recent productions by Vancouver Opera -- Madama Butterfly, Aida (went twice!!), and most-recently La Boheme.
Vancouver Opera's Madama Butterfly was the first live opera performance we had ever attended -- we were so excited when the evening finally arrived and we got to see/hear what we had only seen/heard via recorded formats. After... more

La Boheme just makes me cry every time
October 22, 2012

Call me an opera wimp if you have to, but I always well up a little with La Boheme. Vancouver Opera's season opener of the Puccini classic lived up to the storied legacy. Classy production, good orchestra with only 1 moment of questionable intonation in a notoriously hard to tune score. Nicely done, Van Opera! I laughed, I cried.

A music lovers must
September 23, 2012

As season subscribers we love our opera company. It is always fun to people watch before the show and during intermission. Pay the extra and get seats so that you can easily read the translations which adds to the story line. Always a treat of the mellow dramatic and emotional roller coaster! And yes, sometimes you might even shed a... more

Music for the opera lover and even the reluctant partner

I keep all my tickets from past visits. I don't always like the particular choices for a season, but I still support the presence of opera in Vancouver. Sing on!

Not for people who are more than 6 feet tall
December 03, 2011

My husband and I attended Romeo et Juliet today. We have attended many Operas including in Europe and in this venue prior to the renovation. I wish I could tell you what the performance was like but I cannot because my husband could not fit in the seat so we had to leave. This was humiliating and embarrassing for him... more

Complete waste of time and money for a wanna be a cosmopolitan opera theatre
November 29, 2011

We recently purchased two tickets (online) to see Romeo et Juliette at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Due to weather and traffic conditions, we literally arrived 2 minutes after the start of the performance and although we were given our tickets at the box office, we were denied entry and told to wait outside of the theatre. As an "alternative" we... more

The Not Quite Magical Magic Flute by the Vancouver Opera
January 31, 2007

Just at the last moment I was offered to attend the Vancouver Opera's production of Mozart's "The Magic Flute". I always hesitate to assume it will be spectacular and tend to prepare for total disappointment. It is, after all, my most favourite opera and I've seen it many, many times from childhood in the Netherlands, to the last performance I... more
