I had mentioned in an earlier post that Banh Mi provides (for me) the best value in a lunch time meal. Where else can you get a filling, fresh and healthy lunch for under $3? It makes a great “recession” meal. Look at this monster below…a full 12 inches worth of goodness….all for a paltry $2.75.
Today, I was promptly greeted...

I got the house special, it was pretty yummy! Saw what seemed like some regulars there, which is a good sign. Can't go wrong for only $3.75.
Cheap, fast, delicious banh mi. They are all very good, so get whatever sounds good to you. My only complaint is that they do not offer Vietnamese ice coffee, but that won't stop me from returning.
This is not going to be my lengthiest or most in depth review, simply another high rating to affirm what so many others have already stated: This place makes some of the best (in my experience the very best) banh mi in town.
Sometimes when I'm reading Yelp reviews looking for something, I'll see one or two positive reviews and think to myself, "Well, some people seem to really like this place;...

I like Tung Hing. Its good, not everything . The banh mi is great but their baguettes are no as authentic as in the past. Its still a great sandwich for 3.75. you have no right to complain at that price. I bought the kids this coconut custard bun. Yuchh! the custard tasted of chemicals or maybe it was the coconut. Not good. They have a pastry covered in chopped hotdogs! The pate chaud is really... more
Althought everything else ... Well most is good at this bakery, this review is especially for their moon cakes. Do not buy durian moon cakes with 2 yolks. That's what i got and it's filled with coconut shreds. The pastry is dry and the yolks taste fishy and dry as if they're old from last year! Good thing i only bought one to try and wasn't cheap at $8.50! I have eaten bad ones but so far this... more
Best Vietnamese subs in van! My fav is the house special (I order mine with cha only instead of having all three types of meat in it) and the usual works. Their honey garlic or nem nuong sandwich is so good as well. Come when they open!
Small vietnamese bakery just across asupermarket where i always get my fresh meat and veggies.
Busy place always line up because of their vietnamese sub..the place closes early aswell if im not mistaken it closest just after 6 pm
Another place that is cash basis only, aside from the subs they ahave steam buns, specialty bread, cakes, desserts and cookies, bottled drinks aswell
simple decorations,no...

One of my favorite places for banh mi. Baguettes smell so good and always fresh. I love how they give a generous spread of liver pate (unlike most places) and give you all the fixings plus their subs are extra long. I'm never disappointed and it always tastes amazing. Did I mention their banh mi is not only delicious but cheaper than most generic mediocre restaurants with their pathetic... more
Lemongrass Chicken Banhmi was not bad. Tasted bit salty and didn't come with sauce in the baguette. However the meat didn't come shredded which is nice. Since chicken was already marinated, it wasn't necessary to put sauce I guess.
What I really liked was their egg tarts are big. Bigger than ones I ate from Maxim Bakery. As for Banhmi sandwich I really like Viet Sub better.
I love bahn mi! If I'm in the area I will usually swing by for one. I usually get the chicken one. I like that you can get them early in the morning as well so it's possible to grab one before work to eat for lunch later on. I also have tried their pork buns, coconut buns, and I can't recall what else. Not my fave for pork buns but they're ok and it's the bahn mi I'm here for and will grab... more
It's okay. Le Pho on East Hastings has a grilled chicken and a grilled pork sandwich that is uh-mazing! That's because it's real grilled meat and not the spam c@!p most places use. Tung Hing may be a whole dollar cheaper but I'm not a fan of spam because it's as questionable as ground beef. But also because Tung Hing is a bit of a drive for me and Le Pho is a hop skip away - bonus!

That sub was sub par. Read some of the reviews for this place and thought I take a track because I was craving a Vietnamese sub and they were quickand fast to make my sub but the sub was subpar. She asked me if I like it spicy with peppers. I get the sub and there's no peppers and it's not spicy. My sub and my drink and came to $5.40 I gave her seven letter keep the change for the speedy... more
There are certain places where I get up early in the morning just to drive 20 minutes to get to. Tung Hing Bakery is one such place.
In my humble opinion, they make the best Bahn Mi in Greater Vancouver.
Because they bake their own bread, the sandwich is best at 8am, when they first open. The bread is crunchy on the outside and warm and soft in the inside. The toppings are viet cold cuts, a...

Tung Hing has the best Vietnamese sub in town. House Special is delicious and its price is very good.
Their house special banh mi was decent but not my favorite. Their baguette is made in house and perfectly crusty but it lacked flavor - a bit too bland for my liking. They also make their BBQ pork in house and slices of it goes into their sandwich adding a bit of sweetness to the banh mi, but the final assembled sandwich just lacked something for me. Maybe it was their light-handedness with... more
This was my first time eating Banh Mi and i'm glad I followed Yelp reviews because I can say that i will be a regular customer of this place for my duration in Vancouver. The best part is that I got a nice filling and tasty lunch for just $3.95 in a city like vancouver!
the bread was just right (i'm very particular about my bread in subs) so i was very happy with it. At first I wasn't too...

Pretty good subs, the bread was good, and a big portion. A bit skimpy on meat, but the taste was good! Overall happy with this place. Subs were cheap too. 3.75 for the house special.
I do remember long time ago that this was one if the best places to grab banh mi. It was actually decent. After a long time I decided to try again and for a special $3.75. It was tasteless pile of meat with very dry bread. Not the type to hurt the roof of your mouth after biting into it. But just dry bread.? As for the carrots and daikon. It wasn't pickled. It really didn't have any taste to it... more
Bread is soft on the inside and firm on the outside. I came in around 20 minutes to closing wanted the Lemongrass chicken but was sold out :( So I got the đc bit) . I've heard and seen pictures of 9-10 inch subs but I didn't maybe they ran out of the large baguettes??
Smaller portion on the meats including the patte, but considering most sandwich shops are small around Vancouver (6 inch~ subs)...

Well, I've been coming here pretty regular now (I'm the duke) haha! But anyways, I do like the fresh bread and the ingredients and pretty much what everyone else is saying about it. The only thing that irks me a bit is the service, they aren't too friendly. $3.95! That's all the lady says to me, no smile no thank you, nothing. Like I said I do like the sandwiches but I also like friendly... more
The place to go for Viet sub's.
But is it just me, or did their sub's get shorter? (Keep in mind they are still longer than all other shops I've been to.)
Great selection and always on a freshly baked bun.
Cash only!
This is my kind of fast food! I love stopping by here for a quick lunch. Hits the spot more than french fries and burgers. And a better deal too!
The line can grow quick, so you have to cross your fingers that the customers in front of you don't order a dozen. (It happens!)
My fave is the honey garlic sausage. I am salivating just thinking about it. The bad thing is they sell out of this one...

Been visiting this place for years, they definitely have some of the highest value around. I can get a banh mi sandwich here for $4 with change. The bread is fresh and the veggies are plentiful. They give you a fair amount of meat and aren't skimpy with the pate either. The service is friendly as well. For $4 a sandwich, i really don't know what more one can ask for!
Their veggie subs are so delicious and addictive. At $3.50, this is hands-down one of my favorite cheap, on-the-go meals. As, other vegetarians know, vegetarian "fast food" is somewhat rare. This is about as close as you can get - fast, cheap, healthy and delicious!
As a vegetarian, I can easily say that this place has the most unique vegetarian bahn mi that I've had in Vancouver. I think the...

The freshest and best vietnamese subs !
These subs are like Bale's but on steroids.... Fresh in-house made bread, more/thicker meats, more vegetables...and made right in front of you.
The bread is so fresh, it's always crispy and sometimes really hot straight out of the oven.
I am salivating just thinking of these... !!
The best little Vietnamese bakery on Kingsway.. cross the parking lot to explore the Vietnamese grocer for cheap coconut water and tons of fresh produce! Tung Hing can get slammed with a line at lunch but is worth the wait. Cold sandwiches with fresh baked baguettes. Snag a coconut bun for dessert.. or three, haha.. The baker is almost always there, he's very quiet and smiley. The ladies behind... more
A neighbour told me to check this place out simply based on the fact that they use real shredded chicken and bake their buns on site.
*cash only* so I came prepared. They were sold out of the lemon grass chicken so I opted for the garlic chicken. The bun was super fresh with the regular fixings; pickled daikon and carrots were a tad bland and the sandwich itself could've used a greater meat to...

Tried the Lemon grass chicken sandwich, cream bun, and baked pork buns. The Lemon grass sandwich was a first time for me, and it was good. They make the sandwich in front of you the way Subway does it. The price was right, and I also enjoyed their baked pork buns. The pork buns are usually amongst my faves at bakeries. However, their pork buns are average. They need to put more meat inside.... more
Definitely the most delicious and authentic Vietnamese subs in the city.
Nothing fancy about this joint but the lineups are a testament to how amazing this place is. Don't fret, the ladies who put the sandwiches together are quick so you will not have to wait long to get your hands on the FRESH baguettes they use.
If you can, try to eat your sandwich right away, when the bread is nice & warm...

Super fast, cheap, and really delicious. Choose your own fillings. Vietnamese meats and pâté, veggies. I like that they bake their own baguettes for the subs. Really small hole in the wall place but do not be discouraged by its lack of outer beauty. Lots of other Asian baked goodies available as well.
Best Vietnamese subs in the city!
Also the Chinese baked goods are the best - egg tarts, bbq pork buns and the deluxe hot dog bun (the hubby's favourite).
The owner was on the National once during election coverage a few years ago... nice guy. Not too chatty but will recognize his loyal customers.
I'm willing to wait...
Do you ever go somewhere, see a line up out the door and head someplace else? Wait. Seriously... stand there and play a movie in your mind and wait. The line up moves pretty fast despite the fact everyone is ordering at least two or three samiches. The first time I came here, I only got one sandwich. By the time I took my first bite, I knew that I should have gotten two....

Read great stuff about this place and went to try it. Wow, this place is horrible. The worst Chinese pastries ever! They were so dry and no taste. DO NOT get the steamed white cake, its so freakin thick, it feels like I'm eating cotton balls!
They may be known for their Vietnamese sandwiches but definitely not for their Chinese pastries. Very disappointed.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! One of my favorite things to eat - ever - are vietnamese sandwiches, so I had to try this place when my friend recommended it to me!
It's huge (about 10 inches long) and the french bread is baked on-site and tastes super fresh. I feel pretty strongly about how the secret to a good banh mi is in the bread. And the best part - it was only $3.50!
If I lived closer I'd...

Where have you been all my life!!? Ive been having just ok banh mi (Vietnamese subs) until now!! The baguette is fresh crunchy on the outside nice and chewy on the inside the rest was yummy in my tummy. Johnson C. swears by this place. I have great respect for the man. His Asian-coded taste buds can detect real Asian food from the foux pas on a whim. You'd think Asians know their food from the dim sums to beef noodle soups to the pho to the tom yums? Well you'll be surprised to find a lot of us don't know jack s@!t about our own food, let alone appreciating it. So after knowing Johnson C.... more
Been hearing good reviews about this place from friends and such but never really made the effort to get there so I figured -- why not make it a banh mi day today?
Pros:
-Freshly baked bread
-Lemon grass chicken sandwich option. They actually use chopped chunks of chicken thighs!
-Durian coconut bun (bought this for Mom to try and she really liked it! Next time I will buy some for myself...

My fave banh mi joint, a hole in the wall but highly recommended.
I make le bf drive all the way from downtown to east van for the house special sub here. I can probably eat two of these in one sitting. I prefer the bread here over Ba Le, I like that the bread is long and slim and a little bit harder to hold up the wet ingredients and sauces they put in. I don't really care for the fact that...

Very dry and skimpy on ingredients. Don't even think about asking for anything extra. The shredded chicken sub was disappointing. Rude service. Much better places nearby, Ba Le is way better.
They really skimp on the filling for the sandwiches. The 'meatball' sub is misnamed. It's more like a meat SAUCE that they spoon onto the bread. The sandwiches are literally slapped together very casually. I took one bite and all I got was a bunch of cilantro STEMS. Furthermore, I asked for no hot peppers but got a helluva surprise as I was chewing. I would go there if you just want something... more
The best vietnamese sub i have ever had in my life, especially the garlic chicken sub, so tasty, so good, only $3.50. Everything in store is homemade, bread, ham, bbq-flavor bacon, pickle, egg mayo, pork liver paté,... fresh and tasty. I love it.
Furthermore, the pastry is good too, try custard bun, red bean sesame (a little oily but still okay), and coconut bun.
Honestly i can have tunghing's...

This is the spot for Vietnamese Sam'miches AKA the Banh Mi. Bread is fresh and won't turn into crumbs when you bite into it. The Honey Garlic Sausage is my favorite. Go here when it opens while the bread is fresh. It may have less meat than othr Banh Mi places but it's all in the bread. It's a great lunch or snack as they put in fresh ingredients. It's also pretty fast as you don't have to wait... more
After being a regular at Ba Le, this is really just meh. Something between the subway-esque set up of watching the lady make my order and the seemingly small amounts of filling turned me off. I prefer not watching her quite literally slap it together, the filling fall to the counter and carelessly shoved back in. I know I'm probably being over-critical, but it's a competitive world out there!... more
We gave Banh mi another try here in Van. I had a combo ("special") sandwich (3 types of meat) while my man had a ham only sandwich. The BBQ pork which was one of the 3 meats was a bit on the fatty side. We were content w/ our sandwiches after a huge disappointment with Ba Le. It is just like how they have it in SanJose. Howerve seems like they dont have as many types like they do in SanJose... more
Tung Hing Bakery is another place in the Kensington / Kingsway area to get your Banh Mi. (Vietnamese Sandwich)
I found their bread a little harder than what I prefer and there could be a more pate in my special sub. Even so, this is a damn good meal for $3.25 tax included and I gobbled down every bite! The service is also typical of Asian places and I expected it.
Next time, try Ba Le...

I often go through random craving phases where I'll just feast on a particular item for weeks on end. When we were in Vancouver, my stomach was calling out for banh mi's. All the time!

Tung Hing is located on an unassuming stripmall on Kingsway that is occupied by an insurance company and yet another Banh Mi joint and bakery. This downtrodden part of Kingsway is strewn with Vietnamese businesses of all kinds. There may be over a dozen Pho joints within a stone’s throw of each other. There are also quite a number of Ca Phe (Vietnamese coffee houses) and Delis that also serve... more
Tung Hing is amazing. By far, it has the best french bread in Vancouver and the most amazing Vietnamese sandwhiches!
i've previously worked at this bakery before and let me tell you how horrible it is and why no one with any common sense whatsoever should not buy anything there. First off, their kitchen is absolutely FILTHY! It is covered with all types of bugs. I've even seen a piece of dough sitting on the counter with flies all over it. what do they do with it? dump it? no. they sell it.
