I was there once and it is a normal place, nothing special
My girlfriends and I love hot house, we meet up here at least once a week!! The service is amazing and the food is delicious, the pizza is my personal fav. The winterlicious menu was great, offered a wide variety, and gave us the chance to try different things. The vegetarian dishes are to die for!!
The staff is friendly and accommodating. They welcomed my friends and I as soon as we walked in the door and seated us right away.
There are lots of menu options to choose from and they are all rich in flavor. The over sized patio is perfect for a large get together in the summer.
Delicious food and great patio in summer ,enjoy some wine...yum. Pizza..that's amore...private rooms for corporate functions...what else can you ask for..check it out...delicioso
it is not cheap, but you could skip dinner the night before and fill up on all the wonderful things being offered. the food is delicious and the live music is a nice touch too. good for a special occasion.
I've been at this restaurant for lunches and dinners with reps & clients and can always count on exceptional quality and service. The food is amazing and the atmosphere is second to none. Great venue for corporate parties or future team events. Tell your friends...... :)
Hot house cafe has great pasta, pizza and vino! The tomato basil soup warms me up on those cold winter days and the hot house penne is my favorite!

Lovely background music and a great stop for lunch or dinner. Its a little pricey but nothing shocking and you get a pretty decent portion.
Had the warm chicken salad and shared the dip appetizer and it was really great for a light meal!! I highly recommend it if you are in the area!!
This place has a great brunch. The food is unbelievable! They have jazz music to enjoy while you eat or you can sit on the patio and people watch on Front St which is also good Sunday morning fun! It's about $20 for the brunch which may seem a little pricey for breakfast but trust me its well worth it!
Hot House Cafe at the corner of Church and Front Streets specializes in pizza and pasta. Cajun Shrimp Fusilli, Grilled New Zealand Rack of Lamb and Jambalaya are some of the items on the menu.
Our family met our friends and their family at the Hot House Café for Brunch on Sunday. It was very nice!! There was a Jazz Band that was very good. It was a buffet, there were plenty of choices and everything that I had was delicious. I was surprised and delighted to see there were lots of children there! The... more
Walking around Toronto and decided to stop in for a bite not knowing anything about the place. Husband had spicy pasta and yes it's very spicy but we love it that way so no complaints. I have been going to the Hot House for years and it is still one of my favourite spots. The menu is huge with a variety of options. Huge portions for great prices (probably cheaper than jack astors and those kinda places). Great value. Have been many times for brunch as well and have to say it is the best one ive been to in Toronto!
Mediocre food. Had dinner there, could've been better. But hey, at least the place looks nice. Don't get the lobster pasta thing.
Great food, after they replaced my napkin and cutlery I had a glass or red wine that went great with the steak. But I couldn't get over the Cockroach that we saw run across the floor by the bar.
The Hot House is my favorite Italian restaurant in the heart of the St. Lawrence Market. The bright atmosphere, friendly staff and excellence in food service always beckons me back. Step inside to the friendly smile of your hostess (a little distraction of the dessert cabinet) on route before you are seated. Will that be lunch or dinner? The menu... more
Came here for the first time yesterday. Was extremely impressed! Their food was delicious, and their service/friendliness was amazing! Would definitely be going back! The atmosphere was incredible!
Great brunch spot! Always bring people from out of town here for a hearty Sunday brunch. The live Jazz is always nice and everyone enjoys there meals. The only problem is that they need to change up the brunch options a bit. They have been serving the same items for at least 5 years!!! Don't get me wrong I still L-O-V-E it here but would really love to see some new stuff!
Whilst visiting Toronto recently we came upon this restaurant and ate there a couple of times with family (excellent buffet) and on our own. One evening while we dined alone our mushroom pasta dishes arrived in hot bowls but the food was cold. It was dealt with promptly and within a few minutes replacements were given and one of the... more
Soooo I was downtown looking for food and came across this place..
A few things to highlight:
Food was average... I ordered the hot house penne... It was spicier than I thought it would be... But perhaps I'm just a Lil panzy... There was a robust amount of sausage in my pasta which was good but there was so much more meat than pasta... If rather have more than less but there needs to be a... more
One of my Favorite places for brunch. I usually go here on Saturdays. Amazing food, good service and a great location. Close to lots of places to walk around afterwards.
Average. Not amazing, not terrible. Slooowwww service. We arrived and were greater by our waitress in training who obviously didn't know much about the menu or how to say any menu items for that matter. We both ordered a salad to start, but our main meal came first? Followed by the salad side by side with our meal. A bit confusing. I had to find another waitstaff to order my drinks. I'm sure... more
They have Blanche de Chambly on tap which warrants a mental note to come back for at some point in time.
As for what I've had, it's Coffee and Tiramisu. Turns out it isn't a bad spot for some weekend afternoon tea, as odd as it may sound.
Good selection, fresh food, employees worked very well under pressure (full house), a little pricey but worthwhile. I suggest reserving a table ahead of time to avoid 20 minute wait time on Sunday.
After strolling the city for an hour or so looking for something new, decent, a quick bite and well priced me and my girlfriend finally gave up the "new" and went to Hot House Cafe, where she has been before. And thankfully we did so! We got a very romantic cute (half open) corner in a overall very well decorated restaurant, nice open concept but modern and warm. Service was very friendly and... more
The first time I came here was with my grade 8 class after we visited the Hockey Hall of Fame. I remember the good times we had here and years later I returned a few more times.

The Hot House Cafe and Restaurant at Church and Front Streets in Toronto is a consistent favourite for the locals as well as a destination spot for theatre-goers and tourists, Summertime means one of the best people-watching patios in the city - extended with heaters. The first time I came here was for sunday brunch with the famjams, and a whole lot of others. It was an okay experience.
They have the awesome buffett which was plentiful, but all the food tasted a bit bland to me.
But I've been back here a few times for their regular menu, and I do like it.
I've had the:

We arrived in Toronto at around 930pm and wanted to get a bite to eat after checking in at out hotel. Me and some friends recently went to Hot House after checking out the Bier Market. I remember going to Hot House years ago, but had totally forgotten about it since. And after eating here again, I can totally remember why I had forgotten about it. Its more or less an okay restaurant, with okay customer service, okay food quality, and an okay price.
We were there to celebrate our friends birthday party.
Went in on a saturday without a reservation.
We were pleasantly surprised to be seated in a privet room.
** The Grilled New Zealand Lamb was fantastic, my wife had the Grilled New York Strip loin, well seasoned with savory mushrooms. Garlic mash was an excellent side for both dishes along side fresh firm veggies.

As a family we've been lucky enough to dine in some of the most exquisite restaurants across the world. However, as an overall experience, the hothouse was exceptional. Came here once for a friend's birthday brunch. Right away, I think I fell in love with the architecture and design of the restaurant. Design aside, we were seated right away (as we had reservations) and hot a wonderful table with a good view. It was a Sunday, so the place was packed!

The selection of food was great. The food was also seasoned just right, not too much and not too little. Sitting outside was lovely and people watching. Nice Breeze & shade from umbrellas. Servers were okay

My cousin, 3 friends, and I went to Toronto to vacation and relax. We were riding through the streets looking for places that appealed to us for Sunday brunch. I'm so glad we decided to stop here. We've eaten at Hot House Cafe a lot of times in the past. It's the kind of place you choose when you're with non-adventerous eaters or you need something generic to please a large group with different palates.

My partner and I ate here twice during Toronto's heat wave to have a beer, a light lunch, and people-watch while sitting outside under the shade of an umbrella. Perfect! The service was fine, the food was good, and the prices were reasonable (especially during their afternoon "happy hour.")
The location, the bustling crowd, and the stylish decor tempted me into the establishment. The music was good, the air conditioning was fine (it was a super hot day), but I was hungry. I wasn't there for a drink and people watching - I was there for a good meal. This is where I went wrong.
First the service: I... more
My partner and I frequent the Hot House Cafe a lot. I guess you could say that we're 'regulars'. It's close proximity, dependable food and great service makes it an easy place to go for lunch, brunch, dinner or just drinks on the large outdoor patio.

I feel badly because I should've written about this place a month ago. But here goes ...
Came here for a friend's birthday brunch. It was a Sunday, so the place was definitely hopping.

A friend of mine used to work here, and would rave about the food. This was a few years ago, and I'm guessing it's gone downhill BIG TIME since. It's unfortunate, really. The menu seemed promising.

A friend and I go here regularly for lunch with our children and have always been satisfied, but our last visit will probably be the last. Yesterday a workmate and I had lunch at the Hot House Cafe. Love the look of the place but must say was very disappointed with the service. Not sure if mine dropped off on their way over...... more
The Sunday brunch buffet is excellent. There's a tremendous variety of food and the vast majority of it is absolutely delicious. The breakfast foods, the Italian options, the salads, the desserts, etc. are all wonderful. I would definitely go back.

Restaurant seats 600 including outdoors, so plenty of seats. Good selection on menu, wide range from appetizers, to salads, to full meals, has it all depending on your mood. Reasonable prices for an area near St. Lawrence Market.
Welcome to Summerlicious 2013. First stop, Hot House Cafe.
I came here with a friend yesterday for lunch to try their $15 prix fixe menu. I started with the soup of the day (clam chowder soup), while my friend had the crab cakes. Needless to say, I should've gotten the crab cakes...the soup was quite disappointing, since the clams just melt in your mouth, there was too much bacon, and the... more
Had a wonderful meal with new friends while attending the BHS International Convention. Owner Andrew Lafey made us feel very welcome. Thanks, Andrew!
The wait was long for a table (20 minutes with a reservation!) and I was hoping it would be worth it...but it was mediocre.
We made a reservation in advance for a Sunday lunch, but a table wasn't ready when our reservation time came up (and we even got there early in hopes that we'd get the table on time).

Went a few weekends ago on a Sunday afternoon to enjoy brunch with my friend. I must say the service was great, by our server Amy. We chose to sit outdoors, but indoors atmosphere was great too with some live jazz music going on.

Our server seemed quite scattered, admitted she was running around 'putting out fires,' and had a really hard time getting water refills. Ordered a salad before entrée that never appeared. Not sure what the problem was, but wouldn't recommend.
I surprised my husband for Fathers Day and I'm so glad I did. The buffet was very good, great selection of brunch food, and OMG the desserts were so fresh and amazing. I tried a little of everything and there wasn't anything I didn't like. The tortellini were my favourite, yummy! There was a jazz band playing in the background... more
2 years later, since the last time I ate there, I was determined not to miss their Sunday brunch to see if the food and service was just as good as I remembered, and I'm glad to say that it didn't disappoint. You really can't go wrong with this place. A great menu (heavy on pasta dishes) where everything I have had has been excellent.
Some standouts are the Gnocci in blue cheese, the penne a la vodka, the three bean salad and the Caesar salad.
Prices are fair for both the food and bar. Atmosphere is lively but not too noisy. It's great for groups, couples or solos.

Had dinner here with my cousins on a recommendation from an ex-Torontonian. It was pretty good. Lots of great options, not just pasta, but pizza too. The wine list is decent. The prices are fair. The food was delicious. Service was efficient and polite. No complaints except for the fly that kept buzzing around table!
This restaurant was recommended by my cousin. 5 of us ate there, and his recommendation was spot on. The restaurant was very clean and modern. Open, airy & well lit restaurant.... popped in for a quick bite & to cool down from walking around on a Saturday afternoon. ...quick didn't happen at all. For any empty restaurant, our app took long to get to us.
We ordered the nachos with wild boar chili. It was tasty - not great.
Enjoyed the nice jazz music playing while we ate.
Nothing in Downtown Toronto is inexpensive. Forget finding a bargain. What separates restaurants in Toronto is the level of "pompous" ... or it's politically correct, ironic kin "snobbishly egalitarian" ... each embraces. Toronto on the whole brings to mind Garrison Keillor's famous mot: "and all the children were above average." Reminds me of Dallas in the Yuppie 1980's. Hot House... more
Lots of variety suiting both vegetarians and carnivores. Wine list expensive, but beer selection is good.
Wednesday night buffet and Sunday brunch buffet are not to be missed. Desserts are to die for, even on buffet nights.
Let me set the scene, three ways:
1. You know those photos from National Geographic - the ones where the Burmese Python has unlocked its jaw to consume whole a large male Bobcat?

Went there for Mother's day Brunch.
Very busy and organized. Have been going to the Hot House for Mother's Day for the last five years.
The food was Ok but nothig special. It's a buffet. The mussels were bad. Actually very bad.
The rest of the buffet was good.
I don't think the food has improved, but remains the same.
See you next year.
When I go to Toronto I always eat at Hot House café. This time, It was a little bit of deception. The waiter was very stressed. We were not ready to order, he came at least 4 times, he was running around. Maybe the clients have to be served right away, it might depends of the manager.

The food is always excellent, the servers always pleasant and helpful. The mushroom soup is divine, and if you are a meat eater the wild boar bolognese on whole wheat penne is spectacular.
The all you can eat Sunday brunch is always jammed so book ahead.
Very low quality food, service was poor. Staff is standing around takin to each other and not cleaning the sticky floors or busing tables. Very cheap quality food, priced for buffet way to high. I would rather go to Mandarin and try and guess at the food. The manager is clueless and seating arrangements are done badly.
Once again the hothouse cafe provided excellent food and excellent service at a very descent price. I've never been disappointed. Tonight we just split 2 hors d'oeuvres and a salad. Shaun split our salad onto two plates, and brought bread for our mussels. Their staff seems to take pride in what they do, and gestures like this reinforce that.
Food is good and down to earth. The Sunday brunch is very good but lineups are really long.
Were not certain what to expect for Sunday brunch buffet with live jazz music for an incredibly low price. The visit did not start off well by arriving on time for our 12:00 noon reservation only to keep being told it would be a few minutes as they were clearing the table. Well, a few minutes turned out to be... more

Hot House is a solid neighbourhood standby. It's a sprawling space with warm ambiance, and thus manages to simultaneously be a good date spot and a place to bring a big group, even a family.

I come here because it is in a good location, but it is always either mediocre or poor experience. A bit disappointing.
Ordered the lamb burger this time. Taste like beef to me. And seems to be randomly thrown together. Not recommended.
Hot House Penne was amazing! The peppers, penne, sauce and vegetables in this dish was great!
Good for happy hour and dinner
I'm rating this for their brunch buffet. You would think a weekend brunch buffet for $20 per person, would have eggs Benedict!! Instead you serve lasagne, and cakes for brunch? We made a reservation two weeks prior to going and was told that we would be seated near the buffet. We arrived with our party of seven on time and were told that our table was not yet ready, then almost ten mins. later... more
Perfect restaurant. Very limited restaurants open Good Friday/Easter Sunday weekend. And from available restaurants open, this was wesome little pic. 3 course menu prix with wine pairings.

My friends love having brunch here and convinced me to join them today. I was not disappointed as it is not bad brunch buffet at all. Yes it is not comparable to the Vegas style buffet, but that is what I like about it.

I went to this place 2 weeks ago and love the foods here. I ordered chicken and goat cheese ravioli, and also cheese cake for desert. I like the chicken but not ravioli. I didn't taste it at all. Cheese cake not bad but not the best to compare for others that I ate. The services are quite late. Last option when you don't have anywhere to go.
I see the appeal. Brunch buffet, which can sometimes be an easy option for a mixed-generational-group -- where can we go that great-grandma doesn't need to wait too long, where everyone can find at least something, and we can get in and out quickly?
It failed for me on a few levels. First, you do have a server, and in my opinion if I'm giving you a tip, you might as well do something -- I... more
Very ordinary and nothing special and sad to say this is among the best you can expect in Toronto. I do like the Sunday buffet but it is very blah. It's so good. I was looking for a winterlicious restaurant and surprisingly found this one. With $25, I have a seafood chowder, bolognese, new york cheese cake and a cocktail. Very good!
Arguably the best brunch buffet in the city. Unlike other buffets where with low quality cuts and powdered eggs this place doesn't cut corners. Everything is fresh, plentiful and delicious. Plenty of breakfast lunch and desert options. You will definitely go back.
it was ok. I think the boiler house on distillery is waayy better.
Hot house...kept getting this name confused with Heart House (which is at UofT!).
I went here with a group-around 40 or so. This is a big restaurant with multiple seating options, including a meeting room (which we didnt use but it looked nice with windows lining it). Hot House is a good standard restaurant in the St. Lawrence Market area. It's a good restaurant, but I've never found the food to be outstanding. Last time I was there I had the orange roughy which was very good, but again not outstanding. The desserts that I've had there are excellent
Big portions of mediocre food. Now a neighborhood institution with a famed Sunday brunch. Eating off the menu gave us good tiger shrimp app, a spicy penne main and veal Marsala that was more like a Swanson hungry man dinner. Service is competent.
The food won't change your life, but it's always good. The Stella Mussels are awesome, and the pastas are delicious (though probably a bit overpriced).
The service is unremarkable; it's sometimes a bit slow/inattentive, but it's never been downright terrible.
The decor inside is a little tacky, but aren't all family-owned restaurants? The patio is a great spot in the... more
My friends and I came here for a late night meal. The restaurant was maybe 1/3 full. After we had ordered our food, the manager came by to tell us to keep it down. He then promptly ran away like a coward before we could inquire if someone had complained or if he was just being an uptight jerk. I think it was the latter, as there were no tables immediately around us, and we had already had a... more
My group went for summerlicious in July 2012 (this review is copied from another one I posted). Overall, it was a pleasant experience with most of our dishes being very tasty with the exception of the steak which was left behind, but the salmon entree and side dishes were delish.
Sunday brunch at the Hot House Cafe, complete with live jazz, is akin to Special Turkey Dinner Night at my 86-year-old grandmother's all-Hungarian people old folks' building. But without the 100% Hungarian requirement.
I don't get it.
On the one hand, I've been for dinner, and I know the menu is....meh.....so why should I be surprised that the brunch is lesser even, then "meh"?
HISTORY/ABOUT: Hot House Cafe has been a Toronto Brunch landmark for a very long time, I can't even remember the first time I went. They are open during the week and on Saturday for breakfast but make no mistake, the Sunday award winning brunch buffet is all I have ever ben interested in.
DÉCOR/AMBIENCE: Cozy, moderately upscale. The type of restaurant where you can walk in with jeans and a... more
What Hot House has going for it is its patio. The patio is huge and usually sunny. Great place for drinks. I've been here several times and the food is fine. I've never had anything terrible, but I've never had anything particularly memorable either. That being said, it's a good place to go with a group because it's big, the food is inoffensive and the booze selection is decent.
I have been here a number of times for lunch and the service is slow slow slow. Do not go if you have only an hour for lunch. Food is good but the wait ruins it

I sure do hope you are reading this while they still operate the patio. Hot House is one of our default restaurant when we can't think of anything else.
It's because it's good.
Try their Gnocci and tell me you didn't like it... I'll tell you four million reasons why I love it. Call me, now. Ok.. granted, sometimes they can use less salt to make it but it's good more often than not. My friends... more
Great Sunday Brunch with Numerous Deelish options! Everything I had tasted good or great. I will be back!
Very nice place with good service. Italian food. Affordable.
My husband and I went there for dinner. He ordered a steak dinner and I ordered the margherita pizza. Overall we enjoyed the food and the service was great. But I heard they were famous for their Sunday brunch buffets. I would like to try it one day.
The food is so yummy. They have a breakfast buffet that is delicious and a dinner buffet during the week. The buffet gives you the best value for your money but try ordering from the menu too everything is delicious And I love the location the patio is a nice place to eat.
ymmmm.dont forget to try their jumbalayavery ncie location at front street. They even have live music on weekends sometime.
ive been to this place a two separate visits. the restaurant offers
a huge seating capacity and a variety of food dishes. the brunch
was incredible with every dish imaginable. i would recommend
this place for brunch only.
For a brunch, this place is great. They run the brunch Sunday mornings
with live jazz. Get a reservation because the place is packed.
The brunch is actually a buffet, but unlike a typical buffet the
food is fresh a hot. The omelettes are made to order and the waffles
are turned out right before your eyes. One of the waiters will
carve you fresh beef. They have huge bread, cheese and fruit... more
I've only been here for the Sunday Brunch, and it's been a while,
Such a great array of dishes to try for brunch, from custom made
ommelettes, to fresh carved roast beef.
Salads and sweets, cereals and breads.
All you could want in a very nice place. (plus live jazz trio)
