Best food, great service, fantastic overall experience
"Inspirational", "mind-blowing" Japanese dishes with "intense flavours" "live up to the hype" at "legendary" chef-owner Hidekazu Tojo's "world-class" Fairview spot where acolytes "sit at the sushi bar" to watch the "master himself" "carve away like a surgeon" and deliver omakase meals that make devotees cry "omagoodness"; "efficient" servers and a casually elegant space help lessen the pain of... more
Tojo's is considered Vancouver's top Japanese restaurant, the place where celebs and food cognoscenti come to dine on the best sushi in town. It's expensive, but the food is absolutely fresh, inventive, and boy is it good. The dining room's main area wraps around Chef Tojo (who invented the California and BC rolls) and his sushi chefs with a giant curved maple sake bar and an adjoining sushi... more
Hands-down the best sushi restaurant in Vancouver, Tojo's (named for owner/chef Hidekazu Tojo, known here as "Tojo-san") occupies a misleadingly industrial-looking space. The stark blue walls, warehouse-high ceilings, and enormous open kitchen are almost antithetical to the delicate, meltingly subtle dishes served here. The menu of sushi rolls includes some deliciously local variations: The... more
Perennial winner of the Vancouver magazine award for Best Formal Japanese, Hidekazu Tojo has recited his brand of Japanese seafood haiku for about 35 years. At the dramatic (and quiet) premises on Broadway, signatures of shrimp dumplings with hot mustard sauce, baked sablefish, and sautéed halibut cheeks shine. A sake bar, omakase bar, and tatami rooms rim the room. Stars and moguls... more
Absolutely terrible. I would give it 0 stars if that were possible.
After reading so many incredible reviews about this place, I decided to check it out for myself. I understood that this was a fine dining restaurant, and the prices surely reflected that.
We decided to go on a weeknight, but still decided to make reservations just in case. When we showed up, however, the restaurant was near...

Being a regular viewer of the Travel Channel, this restaurant instantly is one on my list as things to do/try while in Vancouver BC.
It looks like a small spot on the outside having just a regular push/pull glass door but once you get inside, you will be greeted by classy interiors and friendly staff.
We easily spotted Mr. Tojo himself at the sushi bar who graciously posed for a photo op with...

We visited Tojo's as part of our long quest for the best sushi in Canada. Needless to say... we've eaten a lot of sushi (including Tokyo)
This is an elegant high end restaurant, so be prepared to pay the steep entry price. This beautiful celebration of highly experienced skill, it is an art. If budget is a concern save Tojo's for a special occasion, many will only do once. Remember the...

I made reservations to in February for a September visit and let me just say it was worth the wait. I will say, the prices are insane though for what you get. But, what you get is AMAZING yummy food. I had the honor of eating Omakaze and allowing chef Hidekazu to make me anything in the world that he wanted to that evening. So we ended up with a great gazpacho, gooey duck, scallops, hamachi,... more
Food is good, service was great! I love their presentation, even for the sake. but, really pricey!
It was a girls night out of 3, we ordered the $80 5 courses omakase, but neither of us was full lol. The set dinner just doesn't seem worth the price we paid for. And we had to order a deluxe sashimi at the end.
For the price, I'll say the Octopus Garden is better.

Recommended to give a try but you do need to pay attention on the price.
This place is totally awesome. I've been twice and it is pretty consistent in service abd quality of food. The sushi is devine! Prices are more than other places, but you do get what you pay for.... atmosphere and great dining. The first time, I just sat in the main restaurant and ordered off menu. The last time, I sat at the bar and had omakase. (Omakase = Chef Toto's personal creations.) It... more
I've seen this place mentioned on TV shows, heard it recommended by celebs, and even heard it mentioned word-of-mouth and I'm from nowhere near Vancouver...coming to Vancouver for work or pleasure is rare, it has literally happened just this once in 32 years. After tax and tip, our bill came out to be around $250 and we didn't even order drinks! It's outrageously priced but you are paying for the experience. By the end of our omakase adventure, NW and I were both extremely happy. The dishes were incredibly refined and the ingredients they used were superior. Yes, I admit, not all the food was exceptional but the experience as a whole was awesome.... more
Of all the restaurants in my journeys, outside of Gordon Ramsey at Claridges (which is no longer Gordon Ramsey at Claridges), there has never been a more hyped restaurant than Tojo's. They obviously wallow in the accolades--you can barely see through the glass door with all the stickers on it from various review sites like Zagat, Trip Advisor, or Yelp. I may never again encounter a restaurant... more
Checked this beautiful restaurant out for dinner because i was craving a delicious japanese restaurant.

So I went here while staying in Vancouver. I saw todos on Anthony Bourdain's television show. Tojo apparently is the creator of the California roll. This is an item that is smoked in house and literally melted in my mouth. The... more
The food was absolutely fabulous. Subtle flavors and textures. The dining experience didn't quite match up (hence the 4/5*) and I will elaborate on my statement.

Wow, just wow. This is my favorite restaurant, this guy is a genius. The tuna melts in your mouth, everything is just wonderful. It's a price definitely worth paying. When the hostess learned it was our anniversary, she gave us two glasses of the most delicious cranberry wine I've ever tasted. She was incredibly excited and sweet! Can't wait to come back!!
Would love to review the food, but can't. Didn't eat it. Was recommended by culinary school but forewarned that despite claims of inventing California roll it's not true. Anyway, i went expecting $80 - $120 omekasi. Looking forward to it. I have had sushi at the best in Tokyo, los Angeles, and Manhattan and wanted to add this to my list. It is Wednesday night. Only two people at sushi bar and... more
Had the omakase meal on a Wednesday night. Parking was ample and restaurant was easy to find. Relatively large restaurant with a central sushi bar and surrounding tables. Tojo was in the sushi bar area making food and talking to bar guests. Ordered the Tojo house sake, wasn't terribly good. The omakase meal was below average. The other reviews on Yelp were fairly accurate. The first three... more

Very jealous of BC folks!
I was struggled where to go for our wood wedding anniversary dinner and thought any outstanding Japanese restaurant we never been to. Based on other reviews, I agreed Tojo's is most expensive Japanese restaurant in town....

The best Japanese restaurant in Vancouver. I've tried many Japanese restaurants in Vancouver and nothing beats Tojos. Expect to get small portions along with an expensive bill but it is so worth it! It is very traditional and clean
Disappointing is an understatement. We came here on Valentine's Day with another couple. We were seated right away in a cool little enclave. However my boyfriend who got the more elaborate version did not get his sushi....after waiting three hours (yes, three hours) our waiter... more
Had an amazing experience at Tojo's again last night. Had 6-7 courses of the omakase ( I lost track of how many exactly) but everything was fresh and new... I was torn about that since I love some of his classics. I'd give it 5 stars if it was just a little more affordable, but as a yearly treat I can justify it. I just wish the setting was a little darker and more intimate, but that's only... more
First, Tojo's is expensive. There is no denying that. He opens by asking when your last visit was, to ensure there is no duplication of dishes, and each experience is different than the prior. I liked that.
Arriving during the week, and dining at the Omakase bar is pretty much the only way to do this. I was served largely by Tojo himself, with a few special items he created by hand in front of...

A bit overrated in my opinion. Service is fairly good, but can be a little overbearing. Food is excellent. Felt a bit obnoxious, or maybe it was just the noisy Americans shouting for the bill and asking who broke a plate ;)
Overrated. Simply put.
I'm sure this place was the bomb in yesteryear, but the prices are way over inflated for what you get. I'm sure most people go here to say they went here since it was once an institution.
The lighting is dim and cheap. The glasses were not washed properly as my sake tasted like soap. Can get much better sushi in this town.
My boyfriend and I had the five course omakase at Tojo's two nights in a row while he was in town visiting and we had impeccable food and impeccable service both nights.
On the first night we were served tuna sashimi, a yellow tail dish, a halibut cheek dish with mushrooms, a scallop dish on a bed of sweet red peppers and other vegetables, and five rolls. For me the yellow tail dish was the...

This place was as good as I thought it would be. Original Japanese dishes prepared using the freshest ingredients, served with enthusiasm (thank you, Akira!). It was a treat to meet Mr. Tojo himself, a super friendly gentleman :) Next time I'll remember to make a reservation
My wife and I had dinner at Tojo's last night and all-in-all it was decent, but a pale carbon copy of the place I remember; a place that served some of the best sushi and sashimi I have had outside Japan; a place that had more ambiance and character than the "new" place.
But that was 6 or 7 years ago, so I accept that standards can slip and memories can be "rose-tinted". The "new place" is...

Great sushi, though h@!%!*n your wallet. My favourite thing on the menu was the tuna tataki.
Really wished I read the reviews more carefully esp the ones who rated 3 stars and under. The place is WAY over hyped and over priced. The sushi is good but nothing amazing to write home about. Among the finest restaurants I have ever encountered and easily the best sushi. The experience equals the food. Tojo at the counter and our dear elderly waitress created an authentic atmosphere that match the world class cuisine.
I'm convinced any bad reviews of Tojo's are written by competitors! My husband and I came with another couple and chose the six course and up omakase and it was out of this world. Tojo's is a reminder of what real Japanese food should be - a delicate balance of flavors and textures complimenting one another. We sat at the bar, the decor was new and attractive, and Tojo himself was a blast (not to mention Master Chef & Salesman) while we made our way through the 6 plate Omakase. The bill was hefty - around $550 including sake for 2, but well worth it as it... more
I came here for the six course tasting meal, and while it was one of the better meals that I've had in my life I still felt a bit let down, I was hoping to be amazed and while the food was very good and the service incredible it simply didn't measure up to other similarly priced premium dining experiences that I've experienced. Firstly, there were quite a few cooked courses, and while they were... more

Sushi was stunning at Tojo's! Chef Tojo is behind the counter carving away like a surgeon. The crowd was mostly couples and families and pretty low key. The Decor is a littel drab but service and sushi are awesome. Anything with salmon is unreal and try t

This is a serious experience if you opt for Tojo to do his Chef's tasting Menu. $110- and very good. Lots of dishes so expect to leave stuffed. Great Sushi.
The ultimate Vancouver sushi experience. Very pricy but well worth it for those of you who want a truly high end sushi experience.
Go for the omakaze and Tojo will choose. Best sushi in a hot sushi town by miles. Very expensive but simply the best.
Phone your banker and put a second mortgage on the house prior to your oral experience here. All I can say is WOW...a deep bow to Tojosan...for the real experience eat Omakazu style at the sushi bar.
"""The food is stunning, and so is the bill! Unless you're a regular, sit at the counter and order Omakase (chef's choice). You won't be disappointed. But don't be surprised if your bank manager calls you the next day!"""
Way over-rated. Came from NY/NJ area to Vancouver for a visit, and see that Tojo was rated #1 sushi/Japanese. Well, so we went, the wife and I and we were disappointed. The food wasn't bad, but for what we paid, and all the hoopla, we expected much much more. The special "world-renowned" Tojo tuna special, was mediocor - I could have made that at home.
Japanese food on heaven-level. We took the omakase and it was really mind-blowing. In total it was a very light dinner with a lot of intense flavors and aromas. The freshness and the ideas behind the creations were exceptional. The service could leave a bit more time for enjoying the single courses. - Again in Apr. 2011 and we still agree
Very disappointing. The sashimi was ok, however, the 12 piece today's nigri platter was a disaster. Fish not properly cut, rice falling apart and some pieces had too much wasabi. Expensive and definetly not worth it.
I am amazed to see this place get such high ratings. I ate there once and was not impressed with the food. I was disgusted with Tojo's arrogance and attitude. I would never return.
Very disappointing experience in Tojo's. Had both $80 and $120 omakase. Cold dishes such as sashimi and sushi were average at best. Hot dishes were better. 27 for food is undeserving. The service was adequate at first, but the staffs made me wait for nearly 30 minutes for my final course. Chef Tojo did look like a celebrity as he greeted customers with smiles. But I expected better food as well.
Some sushi tend towards the exquisite, but most menu items are far less inspired. Generally overpriced for both quality and quantity. I almost hate to say it, but ToJo's seems now to just be coasting on its reputation.
Tojo's used to be my favorite Japanese restaurant in Vancouver until it moved to its new location and building. Tojo is beginning to take his reviews to heart and now seems to be more interested in being a celebrity than simply serving great sushi and ot
Best sushi in town- bar none! ToJo is always at the bar and has created some of the most beautiful and delicious creations ever! Go for his 'special house tuna'.
Very disappointed. Ordered the 'Omakase', sashimi dish offered no variety, fish is so mediocre that even my kids who usually fight for sushi, refused to finish.
Hollywood loves this place. Overpriced pretentious Blue water kicks their a@s.
Wow. Best sushi around. Make reservations as it fills up fast.
Tojo-san continues to be The Sushi master in Canada. Period. The omakase experience is extraordinary, but make sure the limit on your credit card is not mased out. Overall, the place to be for the best sushi in Vancouver. Nothing can compare.
Probably the best Japnese restaurant in Canada - bar none. Tojo is a wonderful host, and his omakase is well worth whatever price you negotiate. Seafood is impecably fresh, and the dishes are truly innovative. This is almost like being in Tokyo.
Only the hype, food cheap quality but prices high! Try other Japanese places in Vancouver $110 PER PERSON for six course of cheap cheap food. Better to just drive by, even better FLY by. Save yr money and keep your palate from insults!
The finest restaurant food a soul could ask for created by a diminutive genius.
I remember trying the medium range omakase dinner with relatives, very good, but it was quite some time ago, need to try again
Highly recommend this place but don't make the same mistake my friends and I made- get dolled up! We all wore hoodies and sneakers, all unsure of what to expect. Turns out that this place is fancy schmancy. High ceiling, modern decor, exposed kitchen, the works. We ordered the Omakase, about $110-$150 per person. Not bad, considering you get about 8-10 courses of samplers of the menu. My... more
My wife and I have always loved Tojos and went to visit on a weekend getaway from Seattle (we've even brought friends from SF there). We sat at the bar and ordered the Omakase (where the bar decides the sushi and more). Tojo was not there. We ate well but did not gorge (I was slightly disappointed because the Omakase was the exact same as when I ate there three months ago). The price for 2... more
Me and my friends from NYC went to have dinner at Tojo's on Monday night. We got a table right away because the occupancy was really low. I ordered a sake for $18, and received a bad look from the waiter. We had heard that Tojo's was an excellent place for sushi, and even though my wife isn't all that fond of most sushi, we were told that we shouldn't miss Tojo's while we were in Vancouver. When our hotel's concierge heard we were going to Tojo's, she called and got us a reservation for the sushi bar. At the bar you ... more
It is ok but too expensive. People always make a big deal about Tojo. I have been there twice now and comparing to some of the great Japanese places in SF and Los Angeles, this place is too expensive for the food it serves. Of course, for Vancouver, it is of decent quality and the staff is friendly enough. If there was not that much hype about the place, it serves as a decent standard sushi place.
Had dinner at Tojo in December 2006. Excellent concept. Highly recommend! Take the choice of the chef for $60 (5 courses)... fantastic!!! They informed me that they were relocating soon... more
Terrible bad and expensive experience..It is not worth it
Absolutely amazing food. Very creative. A 100% unique experience. Matsuhisa isn't even in the same league. I travel from LA to eat here. Delish!

Why is it all the positive posts for this restaurant say nothing more than "this is the best sushi ever". Clearly if it was, you could go into more detail...I will go into detail as to why this was a lackluster experience. Firstly, the service is crap. The most remarkable thing about Tojo's Japanese restaurant is that people have been known to make pilgrimages from far corners of the globe to savor its offerings. The Omakase, or Chef's Arrangement, is a popular option. The... more
