Inexpensive and great tasting Thai options. Quick service as well.
Pretty good service, Ive been to the Zen a total of three times, and each visit has been exceptionally successful. The location has plenty of parking, and the restaurant has lots of seats available, even at dinner, which is rare in many establishments. The first time I came to the Zen was a long time ago, so Ive totally forgotten what I ordered that time. The 2nd time I ordered the honey garlic... more
Excellent service, truely some of the best food ever. The crispy ginger chicken is to die for. Just can't go wrong here!!!
After a year i have yet to be disappointed by the quality of food and the excellent service at The Zen. Since my last review i have tried many different foods and always find them being my favorite compared to anywhere else.
Every time i go here i am greeted by courteous employees and they remember me every time. I have had nice conversations with Steven (hope that's correct spelling), begging...

I come to this little place at least twice a month when I have a craving for Thai food. The food is always fresh and tasty. The servers are friendly and efficient and the prices are reasonable. I recommend this place it's small but very good food:)
I was really excited when this place opened up. I'm a Thai guy (not a thigh guy, don't get that confused) and was really hopeful that a better alternative was opening up when the c@!p n'roll went out of business. I don't really know what they were thinking opening here, the ever-popular reigning champion of Asian food in the Brooklyn-Whitby Area is Tangerine (undeserving of its popularity, as... more
Fresh veggies on your plate;each dish looked and tasted individually cooked without the extra sugar/salt and hotness that make the chinese/hakka food so undifferentiate elsewhere. The dishes have distinct , crisp flavors; big portions. This is a place that really wants to be something different. Even the servers were more enthusiastic than your regular low price Asian food eatery bored... more
The green curry beef and red curry chicken are SO good. In fact, I ordered the same dishes from a Thai restaurant in Guelph the following week - and threw out half of it. The Zen meat is tender, the vegetables are crisp. And the flavour spot on.
Recently had dinner at this restaurant, it is quite small and clean. The menu is very lengthy (probably 80 or more items), so it was hard to choose. It is Thai and Hakka mainly, but you'll see quite a few western style Chinese dishes you're familiar with. The food was very good, but certainly not a very healthy option and... more
I'm just so sad. I've tried every approximation of Thai food in Whitby and have come to a conclusion.
Thai food is dead in Whitby.
Melodramatic? Yes.
True? Sadly, yes.
Good Thai food doesn't exist here. Heck, I'll even settle for average. Mediocre! Alas, they're all terrible.
My recent craving for Thai made me desperate. After my last debacle with iThai, I ordered from The Zen. Nothing...

This place has the unique distinction of producing the absolute worst excuse for pad Thai barre none. We got a huge lump of bright orange mush and some Inedible chicken. God awful. Barely edible. The rice was dry. The green curry - gloopy and tasteless. I would rather eat at Go For Thai and risk finding another staple hidden in my food. See that review for the stapler surprise.
Eat here to...

Many of the Hakka dishes were really good, although I didn't care for the Pad Thai at all. I don't consider the meals to be fresh and healthy, but more like junk food. As for service and prices, both are ok. Because I enjoy the taste, I would return, and recommend to anyone that's craving Hakka cuisine.
We've been here at least 20X, for lunch, dinner, take out and dining in. Tonight was another take out order, a mix of Hakka and Thai dishes (Thai Red Curry Chicken, Stir Fried Green Beans, Mix Spicy Masala Hakka Noodle, Peanut Vegetable and Coconut Rice). I called to place the order and was told it would be ready in 20... more
There are several new Thai restaurants in Whitby, maybe too many but after trying this one it is far better than any of the others....they do not fill your dish with peppers, it's all shrimp, or chicken with just a few veggies....very tasty....my favourites are the hot and sour seafood soup, a small will do two people, I love the... more
If you like Hakka or want to try something a little different I highly recommend The Zen! Great service, great prices and most importantly great food! If you like spicy I would suggest the Spicy Garlic Chicken on Hakka Noodles, it's delicious!
The only thing postive was the large portions. I had the pad thai and it was very bland. Bought three serving for family and ended up throwing most if it out.
Although the ownership changed they originally were excellent, they are rapidly falling back to average. I had rated them excellent a while back but subsequent visits have been declining.
My family has been searching for a place to call our favorite and I believe this is the one. The food is very delicious, the staff are very customer friendly and environment is very clean. We love food but it's got to be right and The Zen got it right!
This is about the 10th time visiting, but first for dinner. I usually get some Hakka takeout for lunch, which has always been delicious and good value for the money. It was one of those nights when you just don't feel like cooking, so we ordered some takeout (Thai) for dinner. I ordered coconut soup, green curry chicken, tamarind shrimp... more
Went here for lunch with my 92 yo mother. The Hakka noodles are amazing and plentiful and the crispy ginger chicken delicious. When we got the bill for a little over $17 for both our meals together we couldn't believe the value for such great food!! Give this place a try, well worth the visit to Whitby. :)
This is my updated review, after returning several more times...
Everything seems to be better here now. Food, especially the crispy ginger beef, is outstanding. Springs rolls are not greasy, and hakka noodles are delicious.
The value still remains strong at $5.95/$6.95 during the weekday lunch hours. Overall, a great lunch spot.
We drive 40 kms just to get take out from this restaurant, they have a very broad menu offering something for all. We hope they open another location to the east of Whitby.
My wife really enjoys the chicken pakura and many of the Hakka dishes, the staff are always friendly and have a passion for what they do. Only...

Small little restaurant in the heart of Whitby. The food is excellent, especially the Chicken pad Tai, their signature dish. Lots of choice on the menu at lunch, you get a fresh made meal for 7 dollars, this includes pop and a roll. You cant even get a big mac meal for that.Small but cozy. Fast service and you get... more
Let me start by saying that this restaurant is accessible for people with mobility issues. It is a small restaurant that does a lot of take-out business. I've been here for lunch twice in the past few months and enjoyed my meal both times. The lunch menu has a large variety of options at very reasonable prices. The Thai Green... more
This is a new restaurant that now serves Hakka food besides Thai. It is a small cozy & busy place. When we were dining there, ppl were lined up for take-outs. We really liked and enjoyed the food. I must say It's the best Hakka restaurant in whitby. We ordered the hot & sour soup ( had the right amount... more
I was hopeful that the new owners/chef were able to cook real thai food. Unfortunately they cannot!!!! We were there for lunch and ordered two lunch specials. The hot and sour soup was beyond disgusting. It had been thickened with cornstarch. I have had a lot of hot and sour soup but never had it thick like a sauce instead... more
We went for a Wednesday evening meal and had a coupon, which was the first clue. The food, although flavourful, did not have fresh ingredients. Had pad Thai, which was sloppy and had dry chicken and shrimp. The curried goat was tough and eggplant dish had frozen veggies thrown in. The waitress was pleasant and attentive. The service was fast,... more
Tried same dishes we use to have at its predecessor. It was good but the Thai Spicy Fish was chunks and it should be served as a sauced whole filet and it needed to be more spicy. The hot and sour was thick and good and had the right heat but needed a little more sour. The pineapple rice was... more
I stopped by for lunch and had the chilli chicken special. For $5.99 I had a generous serving of Hakka style chilli chicken, steamed rice, a spring roll and a can of pop. When I first saw the price I figured that the serving would probably be small, but I was pleasantly surprised. There is an extensive lunch special listing,... more
We wanted to get take-out last night, but unfortunately Thai Wok 'n' Roll is no longer. There is a new restaurant (The Zen) in place, which I'm sure we'll try soon.
We have been eating here for years. The food is consistently delicious. You must try the Crispy Ginger Beef, the Green Curry Shrimp and the sticky rice. The restaurant is clean and the staff are friendly and efficient. We always take our family here when they visit. We have only ordered the Thai food not the Chinese, so I can't... more
It sucked the first time so I gave this place a second chance and we agreed that it's just not that good, and it's expensive. I live nearby and I always make the extra trip to oshawa thai cuisine which in my opinion is the best food and value, or sweet Basil thai in whitby. Cheers.
One of our favorites places for take out or eat in.
This is the local Thai restaurant and we visit it about twice a month. The food is not like the Thai food I experienced during a 2 week vacation in Thailand...actually it is better. Avoid the Chinese dishes on the menu. I like this restaurant and hope you will too.
This is close to where I live but to be honest is one of my favourite thai restaurants. I always get the pad thai and cashew nut chicken and usually one other dish at thai restaurants so compared to about three or four other restaurants I've tried from here in Pickering, they do these dishes the best.
The Chinese lunch specials are an okay value if you work nearby, but you can get the same quality at almost any mall food court. The Pad Thai is too sweet and I suspect flavored with ketchup (you can smell it). This isn't really a Thai restaurant. But how can you take something called "Wok N Roll" too seriously? The staff is friendly enough, and it's a cozy little place. After two visits, I'm... more
I ate this both times I went there! Feels just like going to Thailand! The service was quick and it wasn't too crowded. Loved the atmosphere! Prices are fantastic for the grand portion they give you! I will definitely go back!
We get takeout from here at least once a month. The green curry chicken is delicious, and the tom yum is also very good. My husband loves the spicy crispy beef.
It was my first time there. A friend of mine told me about it. The service was great, the food was very tasty. The meal came with 2 spring rolls and the sticky rice. The Mango Chicken had the chicken of course, with mango, pineapple, baby corns and a nice sauce. Purfect with the rice. I also had a drink. It only cost me 16.00 and change plus I added tip. Not bad for a nice dinner for one person.
Had lunch with a girlfriend who was from out of town - had a superb lunch. The service is always friendly and fast. Lunch menu is great - especially if you're in a rush. You get salad, egg roll, drink and main course for $8. Can't beat that! Will definitely go again! (you can also ask them to add more... more
3 hours after eating starting throwing up violently.I had eaten chicken curry with rice ther for lunch on Jan31 hope I don't end up in the hospital
Great thai lunch specials that are served up very quickly. Excellent food.
Been here quite a few times, I'm a big fan of asian cuisine and this place offers some fairly authentic menu items. Some "North American" style asian food is available as well. Small quaint restaurant, seems like it's family run. Excellent and attentive service, food is pretty good, decor is nice, a good local option if you're looking for something... more
This place recently opened near Brock and Taunton and my family and I have eaten there several times and have always been pleased. Good menu, very good prices and friendly staff. One of the better Thai places in the area.
