Located in the heart of Downtown Halifax, "The Wooden Monkey" is the place to enjoy amazing dishes made from healthy and local ingredients. Our food is excellent! The Wooden Monkey is owned and operated by Lil MacPherson, Christine Bower and Robie Sagar, backed by culinary expertise of Andrew Benjamin. We are focused on providing local and organic food, while offering fair trade organic... more
I had previously written a review saying how I thought the Wooden Monkey was slipping in quality. Was I wrong? It appears so. I have tried to "walk up" a few times and there is usually a wait. Any restaurant that has people lined up to get in MUST be delivering something good. (I think it's time to make reservations :-)
Our female golf team likes to get out once a month and try different restaurants. The Wooden Monkey at Alderney Landing, Dartmouth, made our list of nice restaurants. The ambiance was nice (evening), service was prompt and the food was really good!
I loved the menu of natural/raw/organic foods. The vibe in the place is warm and relaxing. My servers were lovely. The food was excellent and the amount of food I was served was rather large. I only ate about half of what I ordered. I find that many restaurants that serve this type/quality of food often limit how much they... more
There were about 8 ladies & we all had various dishes. I had a pasta dish along with a few others & it was very good & the others all enjoyed their meals.
A neat restaurant with some very nice dishes on the menu. Very consistent. Providing a good range of seafood options.
When we ordered we were one of four tables. The restaurant slowly filled up and we watched people who had arrived after us get their food. The waitress finally told us after a 1/2 hr that they had dropped our food and asked if she could bring us hummus and chips. She brought us the hummus at the same time... more
Here is my stream of consciousness review, written as I dined:
Walked in at about 5 on a Thursday. Was the first one in for supper, I think. More people arrived quickly afterward.
Gaspereau rose ($5 at a special price - normally 9. Very good, light and inoffensive
Arctic Char ($23) recommended, perfectly prepared with shredded vegetables on top. Broccoli,...

I have food intolerances so for me eating at the Wooden Monkey is a great experience. My husband doesn't have food intolerances or stomach problems but he absolutely loved the food also. Cool vibe, nice location, great food.
I have been to this restaurant several times for lunch and it didn't seem that expensive (maybe a lunch menu or maybe the prices have gone up). I had an $18 salad with mostly greens and four medium-sized scallops. It tasted great but that is just too much money to spend for a salad. I figured that I would be... more
We dropped in and had 4 different dishes seafood chowder, monkey pita, haddock with a flair , and blueberry pie. They were really good. The waiter person was quite awesome. Asher is very energetic, helpful and a pleasure to have as a server. Atleast 8 stars.
Stopped in here recently for work with a co-worker. Nice location; lots of seating .. I wasn't sure what to expect based on the inside setting but it was a very good dinner.
Service was efficient and professional. Nice menu; lots of options and the waiter was great at explaining all the local options.
We both just ordered dinner; I...

The Wooden Monkey's a bit pricey for a quick lunch, which is a shame because the Halifax location is ideal. However, the menu offers great choices and the food's terrific.
new location in the Dartmouth Ferry terminal, fantastic view of the harbour and Halifax, great service and very interesting menu..... I had the meatless taco in a lettuce leaf wrap instead of a taco shell, I was very pleased and would order it again but would like to experience more of their many options.
Local produce used. Restaurant is downtown and is within walking distance to theatre (Neptune), Citadel Hill and majority of hotels
this restaurant is located in an old |Halifax building and still has the charm and atmosphere of such. The staff are unbelievably friendly, so willing to tell a tale or two of who has eaten there... Ronnie Wood being one! Their menu is varied for vegan, vegetarian and fish lovers. The haddock was to die for!! the five us shared... more
I LOVED the food. I would go again. The only thing other than horrible parking, was the the prices are a bit high.
They are very Vegan/Vegetarian friendly, but also have great fish and meat choices.
After hearing all the hype, I expected more, way more! 4 scallops on pasta for 25$ is overpriced. Drinks were way overpriced too, but delicious. Really expensive "french fries"
Having spent a month away with work, a few colleagues and I were staging through Halifax for a day. Two of us stumbled across the wooden monkey when looking for somewhere to have lunch, and I can honestly say, hand on heart, that the seafood chowder was the best meal I'd had in a long time.
When later looking for...

While I was travelling to Halifax on business I decided to eat at The Wooden Monkey because of their vegan-friendly menu and their good reviews. I was seated fairly quickly and loved the atmosphere of the place. An old building with old wooden features, mismatched chairs and tables... it was a seriously cute place! This restaurant also supports organic and... more
What more needs to be said? This place is incredible and keeps me coming back every time I'm in town.
Good fish and chicken dishes, reasonably priced, inviting atmosphere, good service -- the hallmarks of a successful and popular restaurant -- great place to unwind after a long and tiring day.
I really enjoyed the soup and entrée I got here. It is a health conscious yummy place. Only suggestion is getting takeout containers that do not disintegrate!
It is always good to be a vegan sometime ( but not always) , and I love the decorating of their restaurant. I like the use of multiple spices in their curry dish, and their soy cheesecake is delicate. I will definitely go back.
This was one of several trips I've made to the Wooden Monkey over the years. This time, I went with a group of kids and the servers were very accommodating and patient with us while the little ones spent several minutes deciding what to eat.
I had the lentil burger with half roasties/half roasted beet salad. Everything was quite delicious,...

Fantastic meal, with great service and atmosphere! We're really picky about food (especially quality of ingredients) and this place doesn't fail. Walk if you can, as parking can be challenging. The blueberry pie is a must have dessert; we called it the bluberry symphony!
Picked this restaurant with help from reception staff at the Radisson. The food is to die for, and the staff are very friendly. The menu has a great variety . I had a chicken dish (free range) and my husband had a halibut meal. both just melted in your mouth. Looking forward to going back.
The ambiance was comfortable and warm and even though it was very busy, the wait staff treated us like we were regulars and found us a quiet place to sit near the bar offering something for our kids (who were getting tired and grumpy from the wait). The meal was excellent. We had fish & chips, line caught Haddock (hook... more
The Dartmouth waterfront location has one of the best views in Halifax! Their food is very good, nice selection and reasonable prices.
My mom and I had lunch here on the 21 of Dec. It was a great meal (service and food). I had the Mexican breakfast and organic coffee with soy milk. The food was done to perfection!! Much better food and service than at the Dartmouth location.
Ate here with a large group and it met many different dietary needs. It is hard to find a place that serves such amazing veg and non-veg meals side-by-side. The wine list was fantastic, the beer list great, the scallops were fabulous according to a dining companion. Best chickpea salad I have ever had. The squash soup was incredible and... more
Went with a group of friends and was pleasantly surprised! I had the bacon wrapped scallops and fish cakes and shared the Chocolate Tofu Pie – everything was delicious! Everyone at my table loved their food. Would definitely recommend and return!
Very attentive wait staff that gave excellent advice about the GF selections and were very attentive at avoiding walnuts for me.
This restaurant was recommended to us by numerous people when we asked around for ideas before our trip to Halifax. They don't take resos for under 10 people but we walked in at 7 on a Saturday night and were seated right away. The atmosphere is cozy but certainly not private, you can hear everyone's conversations around you but for... more
Decided to take a colleague here for dinner as was told it was good. I wouldn't say that. My pork entre was dry, and gross. The one good thing was the chick pea salad - yum
food was really good service was a tad slow but we really enjoyed the atmosphere and wait staff. 9/10 would return.
nice homey atmosphere and great menu choices for everyone's diet. It is a place that is equally good for families or friends but isn't particularly suited for business lunch, if the lunch is on the formal side. this is a fairly laid back place.
Went for lunch while visiting Halifax. No reservation. Was seated quickly. Great food and atmosphere. Service was quick and friendly. Really good food. Would definitely recommend visiting.
Wooden Monkey took the crown for the best meal over a four night stay...thanks for a wonderful "last supper".
I had the "dips" (consisting of killer cream cheese / rosemary concoction + black sesame hummus + red pepper / feta options), mussels and a seafood chowder. All three were phenomenal. I look forward to my next Halifax trip for a...

my boyfriend and I have dined twice at this great restaurant. on our most recent trip, we came in on a friday night without reservations and were sat at a great table near the window within 15 minutes. We shared the nachos as our appetizer and were both so pleased with the taste, you can really tell that every ingredient... more
Casual atmosphere and great food. Their menu says they do not use a deep fryer or a microwave and you could tell the food was made fresh. The kale salad was great. The seafood chowder was very good and very fresh. The tofu chocolate cake was awesome as well. Highly recommend!
My daughter recommended this restaurant while I came to town to see her and participate in a business meeting. We were greeted warmly, led upstairs to window seating on a Monday night. We decided to share bacon-wrapped scallops that were drizzled in a reduction sauce. Absolutely superbe - this ws recommended by server. Main fare was excellent. Server again recommended... more
One of the best meals on our trip to the maritimes. The place was very busy and had to wait 20 minutes for our table but were well taken care of with a seat at the upstairs bar! The staff was excellent. Would definitely eat there again!
This is a busy little spot and when we walked in (no reservations) we thought we might be in for a bit of a wait. However they had a great system and within 15 minutes we were at our table. The food was a good mix of vegan, vegetarian and what my kids call 'normal' food. I had the Raw... more
We had the pleasure of being served by Batman when we dined at this restaurant in October of this year. We both ordered mussels which were fresh and delectable, and the chowder which was on the best that i have tasted in our entire tour of the Maritimes. For dessert we had the flourless chocolate cake which blew my socks... more
Food was okay, nothing special. There are far better places to go for the same money; Chives or Brooklyn. Ambience is lacking. Wouldn't go back.
Delish donair! We've been many times and enjoy it each time. Drinks are pretty tasty as well. A bit difficult for kid as the wait for food is a bit longer than most little kids can handle.
We went to the Wooden Monkey after my daughter's grad this week. I had the Lamb Burger - which was wonderful with 1/2 Sweet Apple Salad and 1/2 Roasties (potatoes). The lime goat cheese on the burger worked well with the lamb. My daughter had the Roasted Chicken and Pesto sandwich - which she also enjoyed.
We decided to go the Wooden Monkey for a casual dinner with some family while we were visiting from Vancouver. The service was awful. The place was half empty, but the service was like the place was filled. The waitress took her time coming to the table, and every time she came to the table, she looked like she didn't... more
We had a set menu for a work function upstairs at the Wooden Monkey recently, and were very impressed by not only the outstanding staff, but the great meals that were served. The staff were always standing by waiting to make sure everything was perfect, and I really appreciated the keen level of interest in our experience.

If you appreciate the difference between mediocrity and excellence, you will appreciate this place. If you cook and practice the 'art', you will enjoy this place even more. You are quite likely to leave after a fine meal and think to yourself:"Well that was different". Now to be fair, I know the owners and many staff, but that is not... more
The Wooden Monkey is well situated just below the Price George Hotel in Halifax. Climb up the hill from the waterfront to sharpen your appetite. The menu is health oriented and will appeal to organic... more
Having recently finished (endured :)) a 12 day detox program, I want to encourage all fellow "cleansers" to go to the Wooden Monkey. If the prospect of 'clean eating' is daunting, this restaurant is a great choice to indulge in a healthy, satisfying, and delicious meal while still adhereing to your regime!
The Wooden Monkey uses fresh, organic and local ingredients. For lunch I had the Roasted...

Went out with friends here for the first time.
Recently went to this restaurant. Save your money - food is mediocre at best. $18 for a mushy lobster roll!! Along with that I had a number of cartilage and shell in the roll. Ok, that's normal on occasions to bite into a small piece of leftover shell but most of the roll had shell - ouch. Should send them my dentist bill!
We enjoyed a very tasty (and healthy) meal at the Wooden Monkey. Their soup of the day, a sweet potato and apple, was tasty and well priced at $5.95. I ordered their scallop and sun-dried tomato pasta which was also good, but a little pricey at $22 I felt.
The Wooden Monkey doesnt disappoint, but my only reservation is their prices. The menu is a great choice for veggies and vegans and I feel...

After several meals there I've never been disappointed. The tofu chocolate cheesecake is incredible as is the blueberry pie...and they serve Propeller Root Beer....fabulous.
We had an hour for lunch and decided to head down to The Wooden Monkey. Our drink and food order were taken and then we were told there would be quite a wait for our food, as a convention was going on across the street that was keeping their kitchen staff real busy. After 40 minutes of waiting, some bread was offered, but still no food. People kept being seated and were told the same story we... more
Wooden Monkey has moved from their previous Argyle Street location to the old 'Beacon Securities' building on to the corner of Grafton & Prince Street.
One of the owners (Lil MacPherson) stopped by our table and chatted for a while. She's clearly very passionate about local organic food and is a huge campaigner, locally and internationally on this topic and global environmental issues.

I found the service to be slow even when I have ordered take out in advance. There is little selection on the menu and I found the food to be rather tasteless. Food should be flavourful and enjoyable- both of which the Wooden Monkey is not.
The Wooden Monkey gets a lot of buzz, and it's true that it provides organic meals, but I've never had good service or good food there. On every occasion, my food has been cold and tasteless, and the service has been slow, whether the restaurant was busy or not. It is only consistent in its disappointment.
offers amazing dishes made from healthy and local ingredients. the food is of great tast and the new place is absolutely adorable!
The food was good, and I really appreciate what the restaurant stands for, but for the quality of the food and drinks, the menu was significantly overpriced. When I looked at the menu and saw the prices, I was expecting larger portions, or food of significantly higher quality. There is not much selection on the menu. A lot of seafood and vegetarian dishes, though, which is appreciable. Service... more
Very easy going mood, monkey theme artifacts, old wooden floors, furniture looks like has been in use for 3 generations (charming), paintings of varied styles: promote a relaxed experience, with homey notes. I LOVE this restaurant. Everything Ive had there is fresh and delicious especially their sandwich meals with a side of roasties like fries only better and no doubt better for you. As my mom says Its a restaurat with a conscious
Although there are no monkeys in this restaurant, The Wooden Monkey is one of the most nature-friendly places in the city. Located in the downtown area, the restaurant is famous for its organic, macrobiotic menu with locally grown ingredients. Live music played by local artists and musicians, is a special feature of this place because of which it attracts a lot of local crowd. Airy and... more
