the hotel is really known for its good service. As I experienced, the rooms are so delicately designed. having breakfast there is so comfortable. I found them very intriguing and delicious. the high price is worth its facilities and its quality..
have stayed with the property before on several occasions and there has been small discrepancies with food or maintenance and sometimes great stays with a flawless stay as well, however this was not a good stay by any stretch or worth the price. I think many departments failed and we were left tired, dirty, and feeling ripped off. To begin... more
I had read reviews before we went and we were a little apprehensive because of some of the reviews. We found the staff t be very pleasant and our room was clean. We stayed in suite 1212 for a one night, weekend getaway. The property was decent and clean. The suite was huge and comfortable. The pool and whirlpool were actually very nice as well. The staff was decent. The location was very convenient to Parliament Hill.
On the hotels website ..it states this property as being a "Luxury Hotel" of Ottawa!
For being in Canadas capital it's a shameful hotel! The rooms and bathrooms are VERY outdated!
The front desk don't have the guest service you would find in a Fairmont property.
Expedia got me a deal on a hotel that was closing. Not real impressed with Expedia!
Stayed in October for a work conference. Hotel meets the needs well. Rooms were very nice. Could open the door onto a small balcony for fresh air. Clean. Nice bed. Food service was part of the work event so no experience with their restaurant. Food was great at the meetings so I can't imagine there'd be a problem Front desk... more
Wonderful stay, great room, sorry to hear that it is closing. What a shame!
We booked here as part of a visit to family in the area and got a "good rate." While this was true, and the room was solidly average, the rest of the stay was nowhere close to average. The staff is desperately in need of customer-focused training; I felt almost guilty interrupting their socializing to check in. Decor, carpets, paint... more
I stayed at The National for 3 days in November 2013. I would rate it a 3 star hotel at best. The rooms are quite dated, including the old tv's which you can barely get a clear picture on. The fire alarm went off at 4 in the morning one of the nights which was quite aggravating and I paid $22 for fruit and yogurt for room service breakfast which was average to say the least. There is also a ton... more
Stayed as part of a staycation and Booked via Choice Hotel for 110$ government rate. Check in was courteous and friendly. If you come during the week in the evening, plenty of parking on the street on Sparks till 8am next day.

They raised prices and dropped service - and have adopted what I consider a very sleazy Internet practice. The room I stayed in had minimal heat - in Ottawa in late November! - and I couldn't get it warm enough to be comfortable sleeping. They even brought in a space heater, plus two blankets, but the engineer told me the... more

The instant I opened the door, a smell hit my nose, giving me an indication that the room was very old. The wallpaper was peeling from the walls, the TV was an 'old style' tube with snow. The carpet was stained, and one of the curtain panels would not open. The heating system was extremely loud. On the upswing, the bed was very comfortable; to the point where my husband wanted to get the make... more
Great location downtown but rooms are dated. Needs a refresh. Otherwise everything else is good.
Everything was great but the construction going on on the street the hotel is on and specifically around the entrance to the hotel was frustrating. However, that's certainly not the hotel's fault. We were on the 14th floor and had a great view from our balcony, which was a request I had put in when I booked ... I was not disapponted.
the one girl at check in was exceedingly rude.
We had booked for 2 nights - although when arrived we were informed they did not ave the booking. The hotel had not receive the confirmation from Expedia, and as a result it took over 45 minutes on the phone to sort out with Expedia. The hotel staff we gracious and helpful, and upgraded us as a result. The hotel had good amenities as advertised. Great location if on business in downtown area,... more
Booked thru Expedia but hotel did not have our reservation upon arrival. Still had old style box TV, but other than that... more
The staff was very friendly and my room ( and those in my business party) was comfortable. The "32" rooms i.e. 532, 432 etc....have a large sitting area so the overall room is spacious. The decor and amenities are dated and make the overall experience very mediocre. The food and wine list in the one and only ( very dull) restaurant were substandard. Location was good and so overal not a bad value.
reasonably priced as part of an air/hotel package deal. Abel to check in at 10:00am which was very helpful. Parking price is comparable to the rest of the area. Dated hotel but clean and comfortable. Recommend a higher floor for the view. Very comfortable bed.
Good. Wish the water slide was open in off season.
My husband attended meetings here and I was along for the ride. The room was large, clean but dated. The television was very old and small. The food, in the restaurant, was excellent and they served a generous portion. There was also several restaurants in the area as well as shopping. Other attractions were a few blocks away. I've traveled all over the world, and the first rule of service is "solve problems for your customers - try to make their lives easier". Especially if the problem is the fault of the hotel. I was in town for one night, for business. I was about to get ready in the morning, when the toilet overflowed. Unfortunately, I had just used the toilet, so the water coming out was not clean. I like this hotel because it is in walking distance to many of Ottawa's tourist attraction. As well, the standard room that I stayed was very clean and spacious, although the decor of the room was a little outdated.
Overall positive experience, great price. Book the hotel through the secret price function on Expedia and was not disappointed. Room was spacious and comfortable. One challenge was that there is a lot of construction nearby and so you can hear it clearly in the morning and throughout the day. As well, loud noises outside at night could be heard.
I've stayed at this hotel many times back when it was the delta so I know it and the staff well. It's a great hotel in the business sector. So it's quiet at night but there isn't much to eat without a 10min walk, day or night. The one thing I found VERY disappointing is that the waterslide is now only open weekends. I was rather upset because I've used it before and it is FANTASTIC! 2 storeys... more
Great for downtown. Street construction made it dirty right now. Nephew enjoyed pool and gym in off time.
The hotel was ok and that is how I would tell my friends. .
Friendly staff, clean and comfortable rooms. On Spark street which if filled with shops, bars and restaurants. Walking distance from Byward market and Rideau mall. Would go back to stay there.
This hotel needs a little work, the carpets need to be redone but rooms are clean and staff is good. The restaurant serves good food but service is a little slow. I was attending a convention this week at the hotel and the service was very good. Food in both the restaurant and during the banquet was also excellent.
The room are very spacious. The décor a little dated but not very important if all you are looking for is clean accommodation. This was delivered.
the overall condition of the hotel is terrible. unclean and old. street work closed the street around the hotel so no taxis could get in. the price should have been adjusted for this.
Booked our rooms late and ended up doing a blind booking with trip advisor and got this hotel.
It's an average hotel. Sadly we didn't get one of the rooms with balcony although that would have been really nice.

Great hotel for the price, in a perfect downtown location.
Our first impression was the extremely helpful and friendly parking attendant who directed us to the underground parking. The hotel is in an ideal sopt in downtown Ottawa, and really is within walking distance of everything you would want to see! However, the room was just a single queen, no bathrobes as described, no separate bedroom, internet costs $*/24hrs. “Arrived late and left early so can't comment other than to say that the hotel was clean. The location was good and the room and the bed was superb.”
Excellent location and very friendly staff. I would stay here again.

“Restaurant looked nice and was family friendly. Great convenience store on site, open early and closed late. Pool and kids craft area great for families with little ones. Very clean hotel.”
“A very family friendly hotel. It was geared toward children. The service (i.e. room service, clean up etc.) was a bit slow because the hotel was busy during the time.”

“A great hotel. When I called to confirm the room with the hotel, I was told that we could not occupy the room with more than one child. Luckily, when we got there, they did not enforce this. If they did we would have been stuck.”
The rooms at this hotel remind me of poor 2-star properties:

“The lobby and rooms are very nice, however if you want to avoid the $18 parking charge, your only option is to park in one of the adjacent outdoor lots or try and find street parking (good luck). The location is nice, and if not for the parking issue I would rate this hotel a 10!”
“Exceptional location, large suite rooms. It is aging, clearly but gracefully. Very helpful staff and nice facilities. Only gripe is cost of parking, an average bathroom and some times a wait for the elevator. Suite had two TVs and a view of the river from the attached balcony.”
