this is a bit of a fancier place for lunch, but that doesn't mean it's expensive. still really reasonably priced, and the atmosphere made me feel like i was in europe or something.
Located amidst the shops and galleries of Art Central, The Siding Cafe specializes in tasty "slow food" inspired... more
If not quite a masterpiece, the Bistro at Art Central is a gastronomic gallery of good eats.
Me and a friend just had an amazIng dinner our waitress was Pam and i had nothing but friendly service for my entree i had the beef tenderloin and it was incredible my friend had the lamb chops and he said it was very good For dessert i had the deconstructed lemon merainge pie and it was the best ive ever had my friend had. The creme brulee and it was amazing . I woukd definatly reccomend this... more
I've read a number of poor reviews but haven't experienced the same. This was the 3rd time I've been at this restaurant and I haven't experienced the horrors that others have written about.Tonight, our server was Ashley. She was very friendly, helpful, and attentitive. I had the special corn chowder as a starter which was delicious. My duck breast entre was every so slightly overcooked (I... more
Our lunch was amazing as our server Ashley who was attentive to our every need (including ensuring that my friend with gluten allergies were met 110%) not hard when they prepare everything fresh. Even the Creme Brûlée (maple and cinnamon) was perfection. We will be back.
My dear friend and I, met at the Bistro last month. First time for both of us. I had the short rib, and she had a salad, and the mac 'n cheese. We shared a bottle of Hob Nob pinot. Both meals were excellent, and our server was both pleasant and helpful. I always appreciate a server who is there when you need them, yet not hovering. The restaurant was almost empty, which surprised me. The food... more
We ate here for a friend's retirement luncheon and although the company was great, the restaurant was not. The waiter informed us of the day's special, making it sound like a gourmet entree of grilled Halibut steak and it sounded great so we all ordered the same. At $25 each for lunch, we were expecting something really special. What we got was your basic greasy fish and chips. The deep fried... more
by Elaine (from Calgary) July 2011 - A lovely little restaurant located on 7th Avenue and Centre Street Downtown. I have been meaning to try this place for a long time. You shouldn't miss it with their big red and white sign. Our server was kind and happy to serve us. We went on an evening in the weekday so it was not that busy. Usually they will be busier during the lunch hours as more of the... more
Price is high for what you get (Diner Deluxe is a competitor, for example, and priced much more reasonably), otherwise the food is basic. No fireworks here; there's not much that makes Bistro different from other "standard fare" diners in Calgary. Virtually no parking exists here, so it's definitely for the business/Downtown working crowd. They no longer serve breakfast which is a shame.... more
The service was horrible! The host and the waiter were rude and didn't smile once. We were joining a group already seated and they would not accomodate us to sit with them, even in a mostly empty restaurant. The food was alright, but not good enough to over-compensate for the poor service.
Good decor, horrible service, worse food. Would never go back
It's just simply missing the mark in almost every way possible. The service was cold, slow and very unhelpful. There seemed to be confusion between the 2 servers (in an only semi-busy restuarant) over who was taking what orders from what table. This resulted in long waits for things ordered as they sorted out amongst themselves who had already ordered what and who needed to order still. The... more
Lineups are the bane of weekend brunchers in Calgary. It's always a pleasant surprise when you don't have to stand in line for at least 15 minutes, perhaps cupping a precious cup of... more
by Floria (from Calgary) July 2010 - This casual corner bistro is situated right off the Center Street Station is a convenient location to grab a bite with friends during lunch time or after work. The average entrée ranges from $15- $20. The menu has everything from soup & salad to burgers, steaks and pasta. However, I would say the menu is lacking in the selection for appetizers. It only... more
Based on a nice memory, we decided to drop in for a family supper last weekend, and had one of the most frustrating meals in ages. First, it was very cold - everywhere. The server explained that it was the air moving system for Art Central (although the rest of the building was warm enough). And empty, even for early Saturday evening. There was no problem getting a seafood mac and cheese split... more

Okay, so I cheated a little and went for a place to complete review #100 a bit early...what can I say? The foodie's job is never done. Plus, holding back now means more to do later -- and on Wednesday night we decided to pay the Bistro a visit, after having passed by this location multiple times en route home Northwest on the train. With warm decor, it felt welcoming for those who may be... more
it sounds like the ex-manager who now works at Giuseppe's has an issue with me and the Bistro, Funny he joins Urban Spoon on the 18 th writes a bad review about the Bistro on the 18 (where he used to work) and on the 18th writes a great review about the place he works now hey "Christoper" at least use your real name....Christiano....... sounds like sour grapes by the way Chris business is up... more
Not even worth a minute of my time. Terrible food, terrible service ( the french server had the panache to ask the table for more grats ). And the manager , well he is the reflection of everything that was going on in there. It used to be so good, the food was so interesting, the service was always spot on.........Never again.
We found the service terrible and won't be back.
Was there last night and as a chef for 12 years i was quite impressed. The food was well prepaired and presented. I have to say in response to the last review under this review, im not sure where you have eating in your life but in the 35 years i have been alive and the countless times i have ever eatin french onion soup have there EVER been cream in it. Im sure it was cheese, and as for the... more
I know it's downtown Calgary but these prices are steep for sandwiches and soup. I had a french onion soup and it was really improperly prepared with a large deposit of cream at the bottom, as though it had separated into a filmy sediment...stirring the soup caused it to turn a milky, chunky pale color. Save your money, Earl's or Moxie's serves similar typical dishes for less.
It took some time after changing the name but the former Siding Cafe now known as The Bistro at Art Central has finally introduced a new menu. It seemed to me that the influence is much more european with dishes such as brown butter scallops, grilled portobello and polenta, fish and chips and tuna nicoise salad. I only ordered the caramelized onion and goat cheese tart as an appetizer and was... more
I totally agree with Carl's review below, the new look of the place is great, and the service is fast and friendly, but the menu is is still from The Siding Cafe: boring bland and not worth your time. There are a lot of wonderful restaurants down town, they are going to have to step up their game.
The Siding Cafe is located right on 7th Ave downtown in the Arts Central Building which is alongside a large C-Train stop. The location is additionally cool because the Arts Central Building is a destination in itself, containing dozens of artists galleries and creative shops. We were seated at a very nice, sunny window table looking out onto 7th Avenue where we could watch the people and the... more
I went here for breakfast, and it was great. The bacon was a little underdone for my taste, but it tasted great. The little round potatoes were a pleasant, unexpected surprise.
by Wendi (from Calgary, AB) October 2006 - I ate here for lunch the other day for the first time. I was expecting it to be more diner like but it was fancy, with white table cloths and everything! There is a counter diners can sit at--made of marble. High ceilings and tasteful decor, it was the nicest diner I'd been to. And the food was delicious. I had a salmon burger, which was made with a... more
