Well, if you want the full "theatre" experience then this is the preeminent place to dine before the show. It's not cheap, but the food is right up there with the best fine dining in the City. Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the experience since you will be paying plenty for it.
I was here on a night before an event, so we weren't rushed but weren't looking for a 4 hr evening. We told this to our server, but the service was slow all night with no apologies on their behalf.
the slow service killed my experience here. the server took probably 10 min to come to our table for the first time, just to take our drink order. we almost left, but he recovered and the rest was okay.
For being such a well-known restaurant and name, I wasn't very impressed when I went here. The food was tasty, yes, but that's totally expected, especially for the high prices. The atmosphere was nice and interesting, very big inside and classy. But the portions were disappointing for the price and service was slo-o-ow! We went before a Theatre Calgary presentation, and were nearly late because one person's meal was forgotten and the coffees and billing at the end were dreadfully slow.

Lunch here is the best. Great value for money. Try to chicken. Service is also top notch each time I go.
I enjoy Teatro's restuarant as it is close to the theater and various other amenitities in which i attend. But the food in recent months has not been as good as it has been historically. Dario the owner is a wonderful treat to have a conversation with when he is around and the service is otherwise good. I woudl recommend this establishment and ocnsider it one of the better in the City.
Service was great. Food was amazing. I agree that the atmosphere isn't all that romantic, but they took my jacket, and gave my gf a clutch table, so that made up for it. Try the beef carpaccio, and the bison ravioli (so many truffles!)
Haven't been there for years. Noisy in the central area. Fun and lively. Great for pre or post theatre dining.
If you in Calgary and you like to have a nice romantic night go to Teatro What you get : -great meal -great people -great service -good vine. -free theater, if you walk in you will feel the wool restaurant participating . suggestion : try out Dario Mom Tiramisu recepie , if you don't like ask me one i send for free .
The food was great is a bit overpriced. Our waiter was awesome but the head waiter was quite arrogant.
Excellent steaks, best in town, also the most expensive in town.
As always, the food, presentation, and service were excellent. You can easily imagine yourself in a European city. Highly recommended.
Too pricey for what you get. Everything is glammed up with intelligently appetizing adjectives, essentially builds you up for an ok meal.
My partner and I spent our anniversary evening enjoying the special tasting menu. It was a wonderful 3 hours of enjoyment: fine dining as a great way to be entertained.
Very good food, nice setting in an old bank. Best Calamari that i have had.
We had a managers meeting lunch, and we specifically asked for a large corner table, and we got the perfect table. The lunch was fantastic, great for all types of people, good choices, and we had great service, he was attentive, but left us alone to work and eat also.
Very well done. We had the eight course meal with the selected wine pairings and everything was fantastic. The service was excellent and prompt and the server was a fountain of information if asked.
Although it was good I expected the food to be a bit better, considering the prices they charge.
Absolutely brilliant tasting menu! Wine pairings were perfect. Our table, while at the back and aside the bar, overlooked the kitchen and was fantastic! Also quiet private and romantic. It was very easy to get lost in the beautiful ambiance of the restaurant. Such a thrill to visit, it is a place where the food, service, and ambiance all meld together to give an extraordinary dining experience!
My partner has some food allergies and the kitchen was very accommodating. In addition, our waiter has outstanding.
We had the unfortunate experience of suffering through the service of the same waiter that others here have complained about... what a piece of work he is! The food was ok (I had the beef carpaccio to start followed by the duck entree) but not anything I would rush back for. Because of the service we received, we won't be darkening their doorway again anytime soon. After reading a few other... more
Service was excellent, food was amazing. Had a wonderful & elegant dining experience here!
I had the lamb burger (This is beginning to be my regular thing... Never had one before last week, and now I've had two at two different restaurants)It was absolutely delicious. I think I only prefer the one at the Selkirk grille because I think the tzatziki (although very fitting for lamb) took away from the delicious delicateness. I will ask for light tzatziki next time.My friend had the... more
by Mary (from Calgary) August 2011 - Having previously tried out this place, I was not overly surprised to see that the restaurant was a wallet buster. It was a positive that a couple of weeks ago, there was a promo and we used that but even with the coupon, the dinner was definitely my budget for the week. On the up side, when you dine at Teatro, you are sure to get some pretty good service... more
Overseasoning (Duck Marget), under/non-existent seasoning (beef carpaccio), service at wrong temperature (warm bison tartare.. ick) were amongst the largest poor execution errors of the night.
Went for dinner with a friend and one thing we could both agree on: the food was really well prepared and thoughtful. Straight up LOVE the creme brule trio - it was absolutley one of the best desserts I have ever had. I personally felt like the service was a little off. Our waiter knew when to bring dishes/ clear items/fill water but was otherwise rather bland and maybe didnt reflect the price... more
Teatro is well known in the city as being upscale, find-dining, Italian influenced restaurant in the city.
Went for lunch recently on a Monday. May have been an off day. The service was not bad, but not what I would expeect at a top drawer restaurant. The rissotto was excellent, the salmon was great (and the accompanying salad was excellent), but I cook salmon that well at home, according to my wife. I had a flank steak ordered carmelized outside, medium rare inside. The outside was done right but... more
www.ourcherishe...As they say in real estate, "location, location, location!" The restaurant equivalent would be "consistency, consistency, consistency!" I mean, for a restaurant to be deemed "good" it obviously needs to taste good but ultimately, this taste needs to be dependable in order to garner the favor of repeat clientele. Especially as food lovers, it's the biggest let down when... more
...The Caesar Salad and Sablefish were savory and delicious but the Peking Duck filled dumpling soup was salty and lacked depth
The food was excellent at Teatro, fresh and flavourful. YUM!However the service was only ok. When we walked into Teatro, we were greeted by this girl who did not smile, AT ALL. She took us to our table and that was it, didnt say anything and she looked rather annoyed & p@!%!d off. Very unpleasant. Our server was good but not great. When I asked him what he would recommend for dessert, his reply... more
The tiny morsel tasted fresh and left us wanting more. We were also served little chewy focaccia buns that we devoured with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
Went there last night because I had the Dealfind voucher - and WOW!From the minute you walk in the place, you will be AWED by the interior of the restaurant! I thought I'd walked into a fancy restaurant in Europe! SO beautiful and grand!! Soaring high ceilings, ornate pillars, beautiful open kitchen. We were greeted promptly, and the hostess took my jacket (another gesture that I love). We were... more
The food is very good and high quality although i did think it was over salted. Was it the wow it was previously talked about in previous years, no it was not. Service with an attitude is a sticking point with me. The waiter should get over himself, we are not sitting in a 5 star restaurant nor does the food match that.
Great food although a bit expensive. But really enjoy the environment and services provided. Will definately go back again.
We come here once every season to try the new menu. Always good, service is great the restaurant itself is fantastic. I am going to buy it relocate you and live in the building. All kidding aside, it is always a good time, get ready to loosen up the purse strings though. Bring back the Bison filet. That meat was a gift from the Gods.
Disappointing. Here's my experience with Teatro:When we walked in the door: the decor was very nice. Main seating area was half empty, yet they seated us at the corner of the restaurant. We ended up asking to change our table to the main dining area.Pre-appetizer on the house: a tiny bite sized (1cm x 1cm) bruchetta sample, one per person. If you are so stingy about a free sample, I'd rather not... more
Horrible service for a fine dining restaurant. The wait staff, Mike had no personality or consistency. He didn't even complete a quality check. He told us that he was sending over the sommelier, instead sent over the bartender. He didn't clean our table between courses, or provide us with something to clean our palates. The sad part was is that he seemed to be providing the other patrons with a... more
a grand dining area and white marble façade perfectly fitted for a lovely Italian style menu
We rarely do fine dining, but it was my birthday dinner and we got in on the dealfind deal, I was so glad we chose Teatro. There was 6 of us and when we walked in we were greeted and had our coats hung up in the coat closet. Our server was fantastic at recommending good wines and food on the menu. She was very attentive to our needs. We started with 2 orders of the bison tartare. The tartare... more
Gotta love those dealfind vouchers! It's not my first time dining at Teatro's but it was hubby's, so he was looking forward to tonight's meal. As we walked into the restaurant we were greeted immediately by the hostess, and was brought to our table immediately. The atmosphere is quite contemporary. We quickly ordered our drinks and food and it didn't take very long to arrive. Hubby's oysters... more
by Sun (from Calgary) April 2011 - An upscale Italian restaurant situated on Stephen Avenue, this place offers fresh seasonal Italian fare.I felt a little adventurous and tried the Honey-Rosemary Seared Duck Breast Magret, which was accompanied by polenta verde, caramelized cippolini, and pancetta-mission fig fricassee. The baked risotto cake on this main dish was something I never experienced... more
My husband and I decided to go to Teatro for a dinner a little while ago, and we fell in love! Our night began as soon as we had arrived. The beauty alone of this restaurant which is nestled in the core of Calgary, displayed among rich luxury and priceless ambience will be enough to "woo" your sweetheart. Of course the service was impeccable, everything from typical coat service to completely... more
What goes better with a trip to "the Theatre" than a stop beforehand at Teatro? This upscale riff on Italian fare provides its audience with a series of stages worth applauding.Everything is very well prepared and full of complex flavour. It is in the end, however, the service that deserves a standing ovation. From the front of house to table service, every move is choreographed in such a way... more
My first experience at Teatro was mixed. The restaurant is beautiful, the food spectacular (I highly recommend the bison tartar and fois gras). However, the service was...eh. We were rushed. This is the No.1 place I recommend to anyone heading to Calgary. Beautiful decor and location but not so pretentious that you feel out of place in casual dress. Italian food at it's best for sure! The staff must be hand picked from the best of the best. They have a great way of being out of the way but on top of everything.Bison Short Rib Ravioli parsley purée, forest mushroom, pecorino,... more
The restaurant is amazingly beautiful. When you peek at the main area there are half booths with warm lighting. We were sitting at a table for 8 in
Fantastic! The best high end dining in Calgary. I've tried pretty much everywhere in the city, and these guys are the best. Every time I try another fine dining place my gf and I always think 'why didn't we just go to Teatro instead?'. The building itself is fantastic and the high back booths are perfect for dates. The service is always impeccable. Everything is absolutely top notch.I could... more
Great meal, incredible service in the opera room. Great room for fxns of 30-50 people
Great food, nice selection of items on the menu and great service. Expensive, but understandable when you consider the location and the building.

Try the calamari!Great food, nice atmosphere - Would have gave it 5 stars if we got to sit in the rounded huge tables, but you should probably ask to reserve them as they are popular.Great stephen ave location, close to theatre calgary.
Haven't been here in a while, however over the many years I dined here, I've always had a fantastic experience. At first when you walk in, it seems a bit cold, but once you are whisked away by the hostess, the servers make you feel right at home. The lobster lasagna was my favorite, however that may have changed in the last while. I always enjoyed the various menu items. This place is one of... more
I went to Teatro's last summer with a group of 8 co-workers and I loved it here. It's very spacious, the staff is attentive and quite knowledgable. The food was delicious and the tiramisu was satisfying. I would definitely come back here whether it's for a birthday or just a night out to enjoy the atmosphere and food.
Our first dining experience at Teatro several years ago was amazing. The service impeccable and they really made us feel welcomed and comfortable. They comped drinks we had at the bar while waiting for our table. I saw a couple of diners being given the tours of their wine cellars and so on. They do send out pretty little amuse-bouches... more
We love this place - the food, service & wine are always excellent. I have enjoyed every dish I have had here, and always look forward to going back. Decor is very nice too.
Teatro is a grand and impressive restaurant in a true European Style. At first glance, it may look like a pretentious place. But I do not get the feeling that it is. It's in an old historic bank building downtown, with high ceilings, majestic classical columns, and a gracious ambience designed for fine evening dining, with dinner jackets, port and cigars. (Pity we cannot indulge in these... more
Now, everyone else seems to rave about Teatro, and I'm going to go against the flow. I feel it's my duty to stand up for all the people out there that don't get off on overtly classy, "fancy for the sake of being fancy" restaurants. I enjoy good tasting food no matter what the setting - be it uber-chic or a total dive - but I felt Teatro just didn't deliver the tasty goods that the upscale... more
We took our father our for his birthday, which turned out to be an excellent choice. Teatro has an elegance and confident sophistication that I just loved. One of Calgary's most memorable restaurants. Fine Italian at it's best. Perfect destination to bring an erudite traveller who thinks Calgary is just glass, steel and cowboys.
Not like it used to be - Teatro's is a great place for a romantic dinner. They have space heaters for the winter since it used to be a little cold. I actually had a hard time finding something off the menu. Went to Brava the night before and I have to say that the portions at Teatro's are much... more
The great parts of Teatros was the ambiance, the food was exquisite, we loved that the chef sent little bites around to try of appetizers between courses. Teatro is an excellent restaurant! Fantastic miso sablefish appetizer, amazing dry-aged beef tenderloin, superb dessert... And great service. Worth every penny.
with class and pizzazzzzz! My daughter and I enjoyed the brilliant food and stunning building. Chairs are comfy, food unique and plating superb! This is an experience restaurant, and costs a little more.Worth every dollar!
My first visit to Teatro was to celebrate my sixth wedding anniversary last week. The anticipation was great, which can promptly kill any dining experience, but gladly, it was a fabulous evening all around. My husband and I were in no hurry whatsoever - we sipped cocktails and wine while taking our time perusing the menu and chatted with our waiter who was very accommodating in helping us put... more
Ate here August 13, 2009 for a special occasion. We had both meant to try it for awhile, but just never got around to it. The ambience is lovely. Superbe restaurant, great ambiance. We went there with our 4 months old baby an they did not mind. The service was impecable and the satff seemed to be passionate. The food was amazing, fresh and tasty. It's expensive but Ithink that you pay for what you get...in this case. Would recomanded it for business dinner or special occasion.
Beautifull atmosphere, most memorable meals there. The 8 course with wine pairings is worth every penny
Great staff takes excellent care of clients. Wine list is extensive and knowledgeable and friendly staff make you feel at ease.Impeccable food quality keeps me coming back again and again. A favourite!
Thinks it's something it's not. I don't mind paying for good food (and it was good), but I've had better for less.
it's been a long time, but i remember it was yummy!
It's good but way to expensive for what little you get and the food is not that great
Short Story Don't go there. Long story We had booked a group for 20 people for a 3 course meal at a set price of 70$. We called back to confirm and they told us no and that it would be atleast 85-110$ a person. This is after we had booked and agreed on a price, and had 20 people plan thier night around this for a special event. The manager was extreamly rude when we tired to resolve the... more
Short Story: Don't go there.
Great atmosphere, food is way too overpriced for the quality and value. THE place to go eat for posers. Worth trying once maaaaybe during annual Downtown Dining festival.
Great Food, Wonderul Setting and Amazing Variation in Menu.
The 10-course meal paired with wine is still one of the best meals I've had in my life.
I enjoyed every aspect of this restaurant! The food was fantastic--I had the Quebec quail with spaghetti squash--and the service was attentive and never rushed. I am definitely willing to pay the higher prices for this type of restaurant experience.
A great wine list but the food quality fell short for me as did the service but a beautiful restaurant for sure. Now if ony they could do something about al the druggies on Stephen Ave... more
We had the tasting menu and it was excellent. Good wine list. The service was below expectations. Maybe it was a bad night? I would give it a go again.
nice food - great desert!
Ostentatious, expensive, but rather fun. The atmosphere and the park beside it make this restaurant.
Went there for my birthday, had the nicest waitress who didn't know it was my birthday, but brought out an item that was on the dinner menu, eventhough we showed up for lunch. I was with 3 other people, we all ordered different appetizers and main dishes, unfortunately, they all tasted cheap and I felt very unsatisfied and drained of money all for nothing.

Expecting the best of the best, I was up for a big fall. While the atmosphere was perfect, the food was cold and the waiter was barely around to take our order, which made the expense of the whole experience seem outrageous. While I am sure others have had fabulous meals, I will not be recommending the restaurant to anyone I know.
Teatro has wonderful atmosphere and a dying reputation as one of the city’s best restaurants. Our party of 4 went for dinner and chose the chef’s large tasting menu and wine for $800.00 before tip. At that price I do expect the food to be excellent and with each course the diner awaits in anticipation for something that wows the senses not disappoints the senses. The food was not terrible but... more

What distinguishes a restaurant? In Teatro?s case, it is any one
of a number of things, as well as the sum of those things.
Ambience. Menu. Wine list. Service. Works of art. Together,
they can make any occasion memorable. Even Tuesday.

The menu and daily specials at Teatro are created by one of the region's top chefs. The varied selections feature the best of the predictable and the unusual, including Risotto of Chanterelle, butternut squash and ruby chard.
