The Sushi was better than average for sure but the service was the slowest I've ever seen. We waited at the front while staff walked past us until one finally grabbed some menus and invited us in. They didn't realize that we had a reservation until we stopped them in the middle of the restaurant (they'd only said follow me please). The servers were friendly but ordering took a long time and... more
even after renovations and menu revision, the restaurant lacks creativity in its decor and menu items.Reward your friday night at another sushi restaurant with better creativity
my wife and I had to try out this new restaurant in the area and we found the time earlier this evening. The whole interior was cute, especially our wiatress who my wife described was like a little japanese doll. She friendly greeted us and sat us down. She was qiuck and prompt in taking our orders. However this was when everything went 180.Our first orders of california rolls and tempura... more
I consevatively estimate that I have eaten at Sushikawa 80times over the for 3 years.Full of freshness and flavour. The service is great and food spectacular.I've never had prlblem with staff or sevice.Owner is very friendly and greet whenever I come in and out.I'me very comfortable to see their wonderful teamwork between owner and staffs with big smiles.I'll continue to come back again and... more
Whenever I crave for sushi / sashimi - Sushi Kawa on 4th is my place to go.The manner in which the chef cuts his fish is with fine care and detail so that it sits in the mouth and "melts", as the layers separate under slight squeezing between the tongue and the larynx. In description : It was like having a relationship with the fish
...this is as close to the real deal as you can get without having to venture out to Vancouver or Toronto for that calibre.
We went to Sushi Kawa fairly late in the evening, after the rush. I was a little nervous about that, in terms of freshness, but I was experiencing a serious sashimi craving.Despite the late hour, I was really impressed with the sashimi. We got the assortment. It was all fresh, and reasonably priced. The tempura was very fresh and crispy. Dynamite rolls were good (although I don't know how you... more
For starters, I always go for the Spicy Tempura Tofu. Even if you’re not a tofu fan, the spicy and tangy sauce that covers these crispy squares is, at the very least, worth a try!... more
So after driving 5 hour from calgary, I originally wanted to visit the famous globefish I heard so much about but my mother ended up dragging me here. After calming down I decided to give this place a chance since mom said she was going to treat me. I was seated by one of the waitresses and the interior looked like it was pieced together with a last minute budget. HELLO? ever heard of... more
I agree with the person who wrote below. Way too much rice on their sushi, not enough fish... especially for how much they charge. I also saw the owners in the back interacting with their employees and by the way they treated, it seemed like they had no respect for them. Overall I didn't enjoy my experience there.
Sushi Kawa is the only Japanese restaurant in Calgary that I've been to that serves the Okonomiyaki. There could be others but I haven't hit them up yet. Shout out in the comment box... more
the taste was nice although some rolls tasted pretty similar, but it was difficult to eat as the rolls were too big to put into ur mouth and VERY sloppy (as in falling apart) the service was also okay, prices were decent, maybe i will give them another try
I had my doubts when my business associate suggested Japanese for lunch, but after stepping into Sushikawa I was surprised at the atmosphere and the endless menu selection! He told me that this was THE PLACE for sushi so I tried some and I think I've fallen in love. My girlfriend also a sushi fanatic so I think I'll suprise her with dinner here on Valentine's!
"Sushi Heaven"? My god, that's the overstatement of the century. The rolls had more rice than filling, and that rice was pretty poor. The fish wasn't fresh. The tempura was greasy. The only good thing were the gyoza, but that doesn't forgive the other failures.
If you like sushi and Japanese food, this is the best I have tried in Calgary. The menu has a lot of options if you want to go in a group, the service is great, and I have never been even remotely disappointed in any food they gave me.
After failing a third time to get into the highly (peer) acclaimed Towa on 4th Street SW, my friends and I decided to go Sushi Kawa just a few meters down the street (at 2204 4th Street... more
This is the closest sushi I can get to Japan. What we have here is a real sushi chef from Japan. I absolutely love it but it is pretty pricey.
Sushikawa is a favorite Calgary sushi restaurant for several reasons. First of all, the sushi’s delicious, always fresh and fun to order with the help of the menu photos. There’s the unpretentious atmosphere in modern yet not stark surroundings, with sumo wrestlers plying their sport on a corner tv (don’t worry, you can sit facing the other way if it’s not your thing!). And we love the... more
This is a great cozy, almost congested little lunch spot. But congested in a good way. Sushi is good quality, they have fresh ingredients, and it truly is the perfect lunch-type atmosphere. Get here early, because it fills up fast.
By far the best sushi in town. Always consistent in quality.
I have been to Sushi Kawa numerous times and will often go out of my way to go there. Reservations are a must if you're set on it -- it's often full, especially on weekend evenings. Some of the wait staff have been there for many years and they're adorable, their greetings and goodbyes reminding me of my time in Tokyo. This restaurant is the best of urban-Japanese decor fusion with exposed... more
Sushi Kawa is consistently good sushi for good prices, the lunch specials for 10.95 are a great deal, you get a variety of pieces and miso to start, and it actually fills you up. The service is prompt and friendly. Highly recommended.
Awesome food! Traditional food but modern atmosphere. Easy to understand, fully-illustrated menus! Great for beginners of the Japanese food experience!
there was not much to dislike about this restaraunt. it is a little more pricey than other Japanese restaraunts but is well worth the extra pennies
loves it good place for authentic sushi
I have been to this restaurant many times and it is The Best sushi in town.
Great sushi! Good miso soup, great service, reasonable prices and sumo wrestling on the big screen!
Love the authenticity of the food... I can't find anywhere else that does Okonomiyaki!
I went here with some friends...we had a $200 dinner...we asked for extra ponzu sauce and the waitress told me she was going to charge me extra...NEVER AGAIN...worst service EVER!!!
With the OUTSTANDIND Towa Sushi now open 2 doors north of Sushi Kawa, one can only hope that Kawa either gets its act together or closes to allow for a bit more diversity on 4 St. Kawa is overpriced and bland- there are so many good sushi places in town now.
A good sushi restaurant. The ambiance is not typical. Instead of booths or white table cloths, the restaurant is located in a character building. Old exposed brick, hard wood floor, wood tables and a nice touch of uniqueness. Non-romantic but interesting. The restaurant also features a sumo wrestling monitor for those looking for that additional touch of Japanese. A small side terrace is... more
This new restaurant on trendy 4th Street features traditional Japanese cuisine in wholly funky surroundings. In addition to a vast selection of nigiri sushi, sashimi, tempura and teriyaki dishes, Kawa offers less familiar Japanese fare such as okonomiyaki , a Japanese style pizza. At mid-day, Kawa features "lunchboxes," a selection of sushi, teriyaki and tempura carefully arranged in a... more
