Japanese fun food, from the people who operate the much-admired Kingyo in the West End. This year-old venture takes more kooky chances and has more of a contemporary, party atmosphere. Favourites include the corn kakiage (corn kernels fried in tempura batter), Asian kakiage (prawn, squid and scallops, ditto), asari yaki udon (thick noodles with clams and shredded kimchi), negitori battera... more

Japanese fun food, from the people who operate the much-admired Kingyo in the West End. This venture takes more kooky chances and has a more comtemporary, party atmospehere. On the menu recently: chicken teriyaki pizza, a Hawaiian-style rice ball with sausage and jalapeno, and a "shake" sashimi salad that was tossed in a large mason jar before being poured out for two lucky diners. Generally in life, I abhor queues and lineups. Chalk it up to immaturity or impatience. But mainly I hate wasting time doing nothing. That and I have a very short attention span.

So when I spot new places in and around town, I’m often torn about when to go and check them out. When I first saw Suika open its doors during its first week, I had noted that I should go early and beat the crowds... more

Came here on a weeknight with my boyfriend so it wasn't too busy. Here are a few of the memorable items that we had:

The deluxe suika box ($12.80)
An appetizer box featuring 9 different kinds. This was a nice and cute snack box, i liked how they had a variety of items from veggies to meat, from raw to cooked. To list all the items: lemon chicken, grilled fish, crackers with cheese paste, spicy... more

Food is very good and the price is pretty reasonable. I would have rated this restaurant 5 stars if it isn't for the insanely noisy ambiance. A lot of drunk people yelling when I was there. Never bring a date to this restaurant. But if you don't mind the noise, the food is amazing.

This is definitely one of my favorite haunts. I love sitting at the bar because they always have the best movies on their screen and their food never disappoints. Best place to bring on a date. Fun atmosphere and you are guaranteed to go back for the food and the experience.

Reservation recommended and maybe required if you want to dinner at Suika. This is the only Izakaya that we visited during our weekend in Vancouver so I can only review Suika based on my visit.

Staff is friendly but service a little slow. They did enforce a time limit. But with only just 3 of us, we finished our pre dinner snack well within the time frame.

We ordered:

Kingyo is my #1 so it only makes sense that I would love Suika (not as much as Kingyo though).

Suika is sort of located on the 99 route so it's easy to stop by on my way back from campus. The vibe is quite different from Kingyo, in my opinion. Suika is more westernized and has a more Cactus club-y vibe than Kingyo. It's still fairly Japanese though, just a little more modern on the inside.

Very good restaurant with excellent service and the best food. Both lunch and dinner menu are excellent and the food is always carefully designed and presented in the best manner. I highly recommend going there for lunch as they have free salad and combo menus. The sashimi that they have is a bit expensive but definitely worth the price. I was at Suika on Sunday night! This place is hopping busy most nights of the week. I've been to Suika perviously, but this is my first time writing a review for this place. I was here with 2 friends on Sunday night. I don't know maybe it's me but I'm not crazy about Suika! To me this place is ok la at best!

I love it here. The service here is awesome, the food is delicious and the interior is super fun! Great place to hang out with friends or family. They have a different lunch special every month. For the month of October, they had the Matsutake & Tuna Steak Don, which is what I ordered for myself. Matsutake is a type of pine mushroom. It was chopped thinly and had quite a different taste compared to the more common mushrooms here. It was a little bit "woodier" tasting but I actually really liked it. The tuna was pan seared albacore tuna... more

Due it's popularity, I was surprised to that there was no line-up at 7pm on a Sunday night. Don't get me wrong, the restaurant wasn't empty but it just wasn't totally filled up.

My partner and I were full from a late afternoon tea but decided to make a visit to Suika since we were in the area. There were a few dishes we wanted to try but decided to get an appetizer, a main and two desserts.

I decided to update my review as my recent experiences eating at this place for lunch have really made me a regular here. I have to say the lunch menu is diverse and always has something to satisfy my cravings.

I stopped by for lunch. We were seated immediately. I got the tuna donburi. I didn't know what I expecting, but I wasn't really impressed with it. The tuna was prepared in the style of potato salad. Really good food, and great variety. Food comes out fairly fast considering how busy the place is. Fish is amazingly fresh, melts in your mouth! Nice Japanese specialties that are a bit off the beaten path - fried lotus root, etc. My only beef is the insane noise level. Very energetic-lots of yelling and singing. fun to sit at the bar and just wipe out the noise.

food:
-pressed sushi: delicious, salmon was torched and melts in your mouth
-agadashi tofu: decent, skin was very thin
-corn fritters: chewy corn laced up in a fritter, yum
-local vancouver uni sushi: tasted fresh

overall good experience and food. service was attentive but not annoying.

Great traditional Japanese dishes. Love this place! Just wish some of lunch items were on the dinner menu. The seafood is always fresh which is great! If you are looking for sushi bowls they have better ones than kyzock. The curry is usually sold out pretty fast, so make resos or get there early.

Great customer service, tasty food and drinks, and good prices. What more do I need to say?
