Steve's Music Store opened its doors in Montreal on May 15th, 1965. We had our humble beginnings with one store front, and a whole lot of hard work. Today, the Montreal store has expanded to nine sections, encompassing a city block in size. In the intervening years, Steve's has expanded to locations in Toronto and Ottawa but you don't even need to be in one of those cities, as Steve's now has... plus

I've been a loyal Steve's Client. My business would not be around without their understanding of my needs!
I had the chance to buy my bass guitar here and to be honest i thought they wouldnt have it but they did the staff are really receptive to your need and they also understand your budget whice is very important for customers i recommended Steve Music to everybody and to me it is a better store then ITALMELODY
I've only been there once at their old location.
As an electronics repair shop owner, I prefer to do everything in-house as much as possible, but certain jobs require skill sets or equipment I simply don't have then I don't mind outsourcing it.
They're one of the few places I know of that recone speakers.
Steve's new store on Sainte-Catherine is a must for every musician in Montreal area, they don't have any choice as Palais des congrès ( Congress house) ask them to moved as they are rule by government it was move or die choice. so after being on sainte-Antoine street (old Montreal) since 1965 ! They moved to downtown last summer.
Their store is in a nice spot in front of bar Foufounes...

They don't check any guitars that they are selling! They just take them out of their box and put a price tag on them and that's it. If the guitar has horrible fret buzzes or a crooked neck or any obvious defects it's buyer beware! Always carefully inspect any item you buy at this store because the quality control is up to the customer only!
Don't you love being bounced from department to department on the phone for a half hour, having to make 4 phone calls with sometimes rude employees (some were nice), until you finally track down what you're looking for and are told that the item you want, listed on sale at $229 on their website, is actually $299 if you want to buy it. If you're ever wondering why bricks and mortar stores like... plus
There is no money back guarantee at Steve's Music Store, if you are not satisfy with a product you can return it but you not be able to have your money back. After weeks of negotiation with the store manager to have a defective instrument replaced through the store, I realized that Steve's Music Store was working against me and was forcing me to keep a defective device that did not meet the... plus
I will preface this review by saying that I have been a customer of Steve's for over 25 years. I've bought Les Pauls, I've bought amps, drums, countless strings, pickups, and other accessories. Customer service has always been somewhat unfriendly and rough around the edges., but I tolerated it.....up until, today.
This Saturday morning, I wanted to bring in a telecaster to have the pickups...

Do not ever use their web sales ...they are not responsive and totally poor quality service and advice.
Went in last Sunday, They only had one model left of the PedalTrain board that I wanted. I normally wouldin't ask for a deal, but considering that, it was very dusty and even missing some parts, I didn't think that it was unreasonable to ask for a small discount. My salesman Brian, was very helpful and patient. He told me that it was already discounted but would ask a manager to see if... plus
Waste of time.I went in last November for a guitar repair. They took my number and said they would get back to me after contacting a Fender rep for the actual piece, but I still have not heard from them yet..... No matter I went to Archambault Music and they resolved my issue.Oh by the way. While I was waiting for someone to help me, I found a beautiful Ovation guitar. Unfortunately for them I... plus
I was visiting Montreal from out of town and was keen on going to all the major music stores here (Moog Audio, Twigg, Steve's). We essentially only have Long&McQuade in Halifax and I'm getting bored by their limited selection.
After reading some of the negative reviews on the web, I wasn't quite sure if I should bother with going to Steve's. I went anyways. I checked out the guitar department...

Great selection, good service, ok prices. In terms of brick-and-mortar retail, this is my fav music spot in Montreal. Jack's Music, next door, is smaller and has a decent collection of used music gear as well.
Its the second time in a row I go into the ProAudio/Microphone section and have a terrible experience. The older gentlemen with the white hair is interrogating me about every single purchase I want to buy. He is asking about what I'm planning to do with the things I'm buying and then he is being very condescending to me and speaks like I don't have any idea what I'm talking about. The first... plus
I was buying a microphone in their dj section. The paticular mic I was looking for was about 10 dollars cheaper at Archambault. I told the salesman that I had found it cheaper and he was very helpful, told me it should be no problem and I'd just need to wait for a manager to confirm it and do a price match.Well after about 20 minutes of waiting, this guy enters the department throwing his arms... plus
They actually had an electric violin that plugs in (had been looking for one for months)I asked the sales guy if I could try it out, and he starts going into this angry tirade about howhe has some sort of physical condition and he can't get up on the stool and get it down for me.I told him it was no problem, I would be happy to get it myself, but at this point the guy is so angry and upset. I... plus
I have given this store my business two separate occasions, and after the first time receiving horrible customer service I decided to be open minded and go back and only had a worse experience. After seeing a particular Martin guitar in the store, I went in to find it had been sold. I asked the clerk if they would be receiving another one in the next shipment to which he replied "I don't know.... plus
let me tell you about my experience at Steve's! Well...firstly, All I wanted to know was if my son's guitar (which is now in two pieces) is worth fixing. Or If we are better to just buy a new one altogether. I went in with Christopher last monday. We went into the guitar section and found the salesman alone in the department, playing a guitar and surfing the internet. I asked the man a few... plus
ive never had a chance to go here, but i have tried to request some quotes over email, which have garnered no response back. so im not sure what the issue is, but extremely disrespectful to ignore a customer asking for a quote.
THE music instrument store in Montreal where vintage is king!
As a beginning musician, it is definitely not the best store, because as in most music stores, they aim at the professionals or the advanced amateurs. However, my experience at Steve's was less friendly and courteous than anywhere else.
Staff were either playing or discussing with each other and my request for trying certain...

Steve's Music has the advantage of highly competitive pricing, but the end result of the customer experience barely rates two stars.
The biggest challenge I have with Steve's is how they basically don't give a s@!t. I bought a guitar from there four years ago that developed a top crack after a month. I own many boutique guitars, so I have all the right gear for humidification and that sort of...

As bad as it was 35 years ago. Purchased a P-bone trombone for my son and the staff were just so-so. Guess I didn't spend enough money there. Checking out, they had little knowledge of the protocol and waited a good 10min just to be able to pay. Pretty disappointing experience overall.
First of all, they did not honor the price of a guitar sold on their website. They canceled my order, and offered me a $10 discount coupon in any other $100 or more product. I went to the store to buy me a guitar and use the great $10 coupon and waited for an hour and had nothing! As the guy there said: "They're preparing your guitar upstairs and it we'll be here with it in a couple of... plus
Hateful - They have a bad managment on his web site with wrong prices. You buy sometihig, and you get a replay like "...our price was wrong we refound you take care." Is not my fault. You see in the web site, you buy it, then they refuse. Now I know where not search for music equipment.
Was there to buy a bass guitar. The experience was smooth and nice. Really open people there. There was no "I-know-everyting" guy there, everybody was nice. Great choice. Will come back.
Big store like Italemelodie use to be. They moved on Ste-Cath street. Price are competitive.
If you need help avoid Saturdays. It is closed on Sunday (Competition is not).
I needed to buy a new acoustic guitar and my friend just wanted a some kind of guitar, so I knew about Steve's Music Store down near the Old Port. We make our way down there. From the outside you wouldn't expect much on the inside based upon looks, wrought iron windows, etc.
Anyway, once inside they have the store broken up into different areas. One area for acoustic guitars, one for electric,...

Want a good technical experience? Go to Steve's .. the technical crew there are just superb , especially the head. They did (at a quite reasonable price) stuf that even 'Save by Technology' -told me noone in Toronto would do!! And they did quite a good job on ALL OF them!!!! In literally a day and a half- Now I'm all set to do MIDI Like I always wanted great job guys!!! : }
Do not inquire through the "ask question" form on their website - they never reply. Which is quite annoying.
On the other instance - I bought an electric piano from their Ottawa store ~4yrs ago - the deal was good and the service was nice. The guys in the drum section in Ottawa branch are nice too. ;-)
Steve's is the most down to earth, best stocked, reasonable music store I have ever visited. Yes, it is old, but that is because they have been around and know what they are talking about. Trust their staff, they are musicians first and sales people second.
It is at least worth a visit, to see the guitar wall and drum sections. Wow!
I'll be going back to Steve's and wold recommend you take a...

Waited half an hour, plus constant asking other employees to try a guitar. Service attendant was too busy on the phone to care about people in store.
I have sent my AKG K 271 MK II headphones for repair at the store. I had to pay around 35$ for the "depot". Finally, it wasn't repaired and I get told that it was not worth repairing because the mecanism is now too fragile since it is broken.
I decided to try to do the job myself and just got them repaired today. It was only a loosen wired needed to be soldered.
$$ in trash. Thanks Steve's...

I've heard mixed opinions about Steve's in Montreal. I have heard that they are snobby, service isn't great, if you don't wave money in front of their face they ignore you. Through all of this I decided to go anyways, mostly because I know they have a great selection to try out.
I was very pleasantly surprised when I was greeted in the acoustic guitar area, then the guy just made sure I knew...

Full disclosure: I am not a musician. I couldn't carry a tune if John Lennon came back to life and told me that to bring world peace, all I had to do was hum the notes to Imagine on key. I can't tell you the difference between a GIbson and a Les Paul, but I can tell you that Steve's carries both and can school you on the musical advantages of each guitar.
Patchwork flooring that is definitely...

Awful Service - I went there to buy a $25.00 ukelele, which should have taken about 5 minutes. I was waiting for them to "bring it down" for over half an hour, and waited even longer to get through the payment. It is a filthy, crowded store, and the staff seem to only help you out if you are buying something expensive. Although they have a good selection of merchandise, it is not a pleasant... plus
