Excellent lunch and service

Best seafood chowder and service out of three different restaurants we visited on this trip.
I tried the Gingerbread with lemon sauce, normally I wouldn't try lemon BUT it made the desert!

Good food! Good service

It was busy but the service was prompt and friendly enough. The medium and medium rare steaks that we ordered appeared in due course. We were hungry so we scoffed them down even though all four were a pleasant shade of light black! Aaach, we are shy Islanders and don't like to make a fuss. Won't be going back soon.

Great Hot Chicken Sandwich

What a great experience! It was my friend's birthday so we decided to eat here! The food was delicious! The hot chicken sandwich was superb! This restaurant is huge and centres around steak dishes. It has however-a good variety. Service is good, and your wait for your order is not long but satisfactory. Waiter was very pleasant. prepare for some noise as it is a 250 plus facility. Washrooms are clean .

Delicious if you don't mind the wait

I'm not usually a steak person but I have to say I have never enjoyed one more. You wait a little while to be seated since it seems most people make reservations ahead but the food is worth it!

Improved Beef Tips

My spouse ordered the Derby tips a few nights ago and also the last time we were there, these have greatly improved! They are tender now, where they used to be fatty - mostly "waste" pieces that should never have been served as a meal!

Steakhouse that could have better steak

and scallops...how can you not get good scallops in Halifax?? In all fairness our server warned me twice that they were frozen and not fresh. Ordered the derby steak. It was too salty for my taste - maybe better without the marinade? The twice baked potato was dried out and microwaved.

Good Service

I usually get a salad here. I may eat here once a year, against my will. The steaks are always tough and grisley. There is no point in asking for it cooked to any doneness except well-done because thats always how they come. The salad is a salad. The dressing on the side is really good.

pricey for what you get

For your basic fare of meat and potatoes it is not a bad choice. You can eat cheaper elsewhere and get better food.
the steak is okay but be prepared to drop over 60.00 for 2 people.

This is a very popular family restaurant. Fully equipped to receive you and your kids. Prices are low and service is below average. Kids will have a great time here, but single grown-ups better avoid this place.

Favorite Dish: Somehow the steaks are smaller than in all the other Halifax restaurants.

What is all the fuss about

I was not one bit impressed with the paper thin steak I received - I ordered it with their signature marinade (said to be garlic and other spices) which to me, was overwhelmingly salty with no other flavors. Good family dining

You know what you're going to get. The food is always the same. It's good, not great, but good. The prices are fair and the staff is good and the location is great with lots of free parking. The Steak & Stein is a safe bet for eating out and a good deal to bring the family.

We ate as a tour group and were treated to a full lobster dinner. Received potato salad, cole slaw, vegetables first then our lobsters. Lobsters were split for ease of eating and were done nicely. My favourite restaurant whilst in Halifax. Their blooming onion is signature stuff, yummy. Steaks are good. Service wonderful. Sparklers and ice cream for birthday guests. Very nice touch. Great family restaurant.

Excellent service

This is a great restaurant to visit with a group.The foor was good and I found them to be very efficient and accommodating.
The staff are obviously used to handling groups. We were in and out in no time and everyone was served and hoppy

Fast food and if thees a delay someone comes around with free onion rings that are delicious. Food is tasty and am always full when I leave. Friendly staff also.

Went for brunch on Easter Sunday and had the steak and eggs the toast and eggs we fine my paper thin derby style steak was paper thin and overcooked.we have been going here for years first the one in Dartmouth however the quality has gone downover time .I don't think we will be back.

Family friendly- good service & average food

Not exceptional but reliable and reasonably priced. Roast beef special was good and the steak is ok. It is not a top of the line steakhouse. Great place for a family- a step up from fast food. I like supporting a local business rather than a chain.

This place is shooting for mediocrity and gets there. The steak is okay but not great. The sides and balance of menu is similarily okay. The layout reminds me of the now defunct Ponderosa. Good value family restaurant

Have eaten here many times over the years. The steaks are OK but not the quality of a high end steak house, but the price is right! The daily specials are always good as well as the salads and desserts. Try the coconut cream pie!

Overpriced for Value

Big prices for the value and quality of the food. Lots of cheap steaks marinated to death. Small portions. Nothing special just a common average family restaurant but at least it is consistent. Tough to get out of there under $50 for two and better value elsewhere.

Always the same TERRIFIC

I have been eating at the steak and stein since it opened in Westphal ! Always great. Yes i do order the derby style,and the apple dessert with ice cream. This isn't Morton's , Ruth Chris , or an even higher end chain . Its affordable dining, that has lasted forty plus years.

Don't order the steak

This is a tough one. I don't eat steak, and my meals are always enjoyable. My husband ordered the Delmonico steak each time and the last three times the steak was tough and full of gristle. I order the pastas or salad entrees and they are always good. The Blueberry cobbler dessert is great!

Steak and Stein Family Restaurant

Went back to Steak & Stein today for the first time in a while. I remember this place as a decent family restaurant with affordable prices. I use to think it was great! Well not anymore. Today my lunch was overcooked, burnt and not at all cooked to my liking.

I'll give it another shot in a few months but it's not at all like I remembered.

I've been going to Steak & Stein with my family for years, and we have never had a bad experience. The menu is good, the service is consistent, and the restaurant is always clean, comfortable and welcoming. My favourites are the Derby-style steak and the Beef Tip Stroganoff. They also make a great weekend brunch, which many people don't know about. It's definitely a great family restaurant.

The food is ok, but if you are looking to take a large family group out this is an option for you, they won't care how much noise you make, it's a family place. The steak is meodicre.
