St. Michael's Cathedral, situated in the heart of Toronto, is the principal church of Canada's largest English-speaking Catholic archdiocese.
The principal seat of the Catholic archdiocese of Toronto, St. Michael's is another 19th-century neo-Gothic structure. Built between 1845 and 1848, it originally had a plain interior design with clear-glass windows and white walls. That changed in 1850, when Armand de Charbonnel became the second Bishop of Toronto. Charbonnel was a Frenchman who lived in Montréal, and at first, he was so... more
We went to the cathedral for noon Mass on Sunday. There was a lot of scaffolding in the church due to restoration, but it was still quite beautiful, and you can get a feeling for its rich history. The Mass service was very traditional. At this particular Mass, there is a boys' choir, and many of the responses are sung... more
i've been all over europe and seen my share of beautiful churches. its worth a couple pictures as you are passing by. pop by and stick your head in and maybe walk through. nothing spectacular, so no need to make an effort to see it.
Unforunately it was under construction when I visited so it cannot be appreciated as it should be. It should be very nice and calm, but unfortunately the scafoldings and other construction materials don't let you get the real ambience. The service in weekdays was very nice and moving.
The Cathedral was consecrated in 1848. At that time some people criticized Bishop Power (who had purchased the land) that the property was too far from the town center! Of course now the cathedral is just steps from such major attractions as the Mackenzie House, Ryerson University, Dundas Square, Massey Hall, Yonge Street and the subway.
Built in the English...

St. Michael's is a beautiful parish. Fortunately it is undergoing renovations and restoration. Unfortunately that means that the Cathedral is completely covered in scaffolding, making it hard to find a pew to sit in and you all cannot see any of the church's beauty except for the sanctuary and tabernacle. Although it's undergoing renovations right now, I would still recommend... more
Very beautiful cathedral, but sadly was in renovation at the time of my visit...so I could not see everything.
Went here for last sunday mass, the church was beautiful however its under reconstruction at the moment, you cant really see the ceiling.
The choir was great as well!
Attended the noon Mass and was very pleased that the combined Senior/Junior Boys Choir were singing for the service. The two music teachers sitting next to me said it best when they said, "Impressive!" I found they truly added to the spiritual experience. The Cathedral is undergoing a major renovation and it is looking better each time I visit. There... more
Nice place to stop in for a brief visit. The architecture is beautiful. As with alot of the the older buildings, it has an interesting history.
Europe style cathedral with nice architecture. Beautiful parks around plus a quire school. Some beggars are hanging around and spoil the picture.
Seems OK, but not that big and not that impressive. Some renovation work was happening while there. Go if you are running out of things to do, otherwise, skip it.
I am a Catholic so I am going to be biased.
I went to visit on a Sunday morning, and there happened to be a Sunday mass scheduled, so I went to the mass, and then lingered a bit longer to take picture. The cathedral is built in Gothic revival style, with very elaborate decorations and tapestry on the ceiling,...

Beautiful stain-glass and alter. For church lovers, get your camera ready.
The architecture is amazing and so is the atmosphere inside.
Architecture is breath taking! Its worth a walk around the entire Cathedral, the detail is amazing. Reading up on the history makes it much better :)
Went here for East Sunday mass. A beautiful church and the senior boys choir was wonderful. Get there early for a seat!
My Mom's a die-hard Catholic so she loved the service & the old traditional decor & song. It's truly a beautiful church and worth staying for a service.
St. Michael's Cathedral is one of the most stunning churches in Toronto. The architecture is stunning. Instantly I felt peaceful as i entered the church. A wonderful experience.
Another church that shows the diverse architectural practices of yesterday. This is a stunning cathedral and if you hear of the St. Michael's Choir School performing there, make sure to attend. There is a peculiar warmth in this church and an odd Spiritual presence. It is truly beautiful. Big celebrations, i.e., Christmas, Easter, the church fills up with regular parishoners.
Nice to drop in for a quiet moment away from the hustle and bustle of the street.
St. Michaels is so rich with history , you feel it the moment you enter the giant heavy doors and are greeted by the incredibly long aisle . The Stained Glass is truly art work and a feast for the eyes as well as the various relics and statues . Including bone that is embedded in the altar ! The... more
The oldest catholic church of the city. Beautiful and historic
as an attraction but also a place to worship and spend some time with God/ I found it very peaceful and uplifting. I like the statues they have of Saints with relics which are a rarity in Toronto.
Cathedrals are the architectural manifestation of faith establishing a splendour that weathers the ages as a testimony to the faith they represent. St. Michael's splendour is complimented at Sunday morning Masses by the magnificent singing of the boys and young men of St. Michael's Choir School. An inspiration for both Catholic worshippers and non-Catholic observers.
I would not return as there is nothing special to recommend this church
Started my days by attending early masses at this magnificent Cathedral. Very solemn.
Always quite a few of us in the church. After mass, prayed awhile at the Blessed Sacrament each time.
I was able to talk to the nice Priests.
Lit candles to my favorite Saints. To my surprised, I saw and prayed to the actual relics of my...

Located in downtown Toronto, St. Michael’s Cathedral is one of Toronto’s oldest landmarks. Built in the traditional style in the mid 1800s, it has beautiful stained glass windows, steeples and spires.
The church is renowned for the St Michael’s Boys Choir, which accompanies Saturday mass at 5 p.m. Sunday service is held at 10:30 a.m. and noon.
As the ‘mother church’ of the archdiocese of...
