Five of us went here on a Thursday night with an 8:30 dinner reservation. I pushed hard for this place, but some in my party were skeptical. They weren't feeling it based purely on the lack of "curb appeal," as one person put it. But when the doubters walked in to make the reservation, they were pleasantly surprised, and so was I. This joint has a great vibe. Old stone walls. Ideal lighting.... more
Food was okay. Wouldn't recommend it. Sure wish post their hours on their telephone messages. After getting a generic phone message on May holiday we ventured to the market, fought for a parking spot and then found their restaurant in not opened.
This was my fifth time to Sidedoor in the past three years and a favourite place to take any visiting friends from outside Ottawa.
Another review from yelp suggested the Salt and Pepper Calamari and I can attest that this was my favourite dish on the menu, hands down. It's well seasoned, cooked wonderfully and was delicate to eat. I would come back just for the calamari.
When I go, I usually...

Love this place. Food is exceptional. Staff is helpful, cheerful (some could use a little wine knowledge). Flavors so fresh and do the happy dance in your mouth!!
I feel that Sidedoor is too expensive for its food. I was surprised at how small the tacos were after ordering them...two bites and you're done. If it weren't for happy hour, I wouldn't have ordered them because they were so expensive ($4.50/taco!). During happy hour, the tacos are a little cheaper $7.00 vs. the $9.00.
Aside from the tacos, the rest of the menu was okay, except for the...

Sidedoor is one of my favourite restaurants in Ottawa. Staff is friendly, food is exceptional and the atmosphere sets the mood.
Tacos rule at this place. Hard to beat since they have a tortilla maker in house. Aside from tacos I've tried practically everything and have never been disappointed with a meal. My only complaint is they've removed the Son-in-law egg dish from the menu.
This was a great experience, it was nice to do tapas. The tacos are awesome, had the chef special which was pork belly taco. Felt really well satisfied with the amount of food. Foodies will love this.
I should preface this review by saying I am not a huge fan of tapas so that may have coloured my opinion. I didn't find many of the options appealing since they have a high quantity of seafood. The potatoes were good but they were just fries. The staff was good and had lot of recommendations but the food just didn't do much for me. The braised beef was very good but since we were sharing I only... more
Food is okay.. DONUTS are amazing.. would come back for just the donuts :)
We made a reservation at this restaurant for a Sunday night early March and when we showed up we were seated immediately. The place is pretty dimly lit but we were able to see well enough. The portion sizes were not bad for sharing plates, and the food was good quality. The donuts (of which I am not a big fan but that is because they are usually either really fake tasting because they are... more
What a gem! We found this Mexican/Asian fusion in the blistering cold and gave it a try... Let's just say I'm headed back tomorrow to squeeze in a round 2 before heading back to Vancouver!
We ordered a few plates of tacos... The Baja fish tacos, and the Spicy braised beef tacos, both of which were fantastic. A touch of lime and cilantro was present throughout both, while the asian spices...

Sidedoor is focused on small sharing plates which allowed us to try a number of dishes. Had a number of tacos and all were very good, but they are quite small and you'd need to get a lot to fill you up. The beef in the beef wrap was good, but the array of pickled vegetables didn't do it for me. The calmari was good and a bit different than the style you'd normally get. The papaya salad was... more
Room for improvement:
We were asked if we would "be needing our wine glasses" by our server.
Remember, it's how you say it, more than what you say.
This was unpolished at best. I told our server "we're not sure yet".
Do note, I was wearing a suit. I mean, I don't stereotype, but at least wait until we've order our mains to see if we'll be sticking to cocktails, or having "just beer".

I recently went to sidedoor with a group of friends for dinner and drinks. We got the chicken tacos and the pork cheek tacos (Special for the night) and both were excellent. The drinks were good, atmosphere is great and no complaints! Good food and... more
Where do I begin? I walked into this place with Learing eyes as we waited for our table, the hostess finally came over and ushered us to our table but I've been promptly cleaned. 3.5 Star
3 Star + 0.5 Star for Happy Hour and Donuts
Sidedoor is a perfect place for some pre dinner drink and snacks during their Happy Hour from 4:30-6:30.
Special on tacos ($2 off) and drinks. We shared:
Crispy Fish Tacos
Szechuan Lamb Tacos
Korean Pulled Pork Tacos
Olivia Chocolate Donuts ($7) is so so so good... Made when order.
Food was delicious though portion on the smaller side....

This place has really gone down hill since they lost their chef to 18. The tacos are no where near as good and the arctic char is terrible, plain without any flavour at all. What a loss, this place used to be great.
This place is fantastic. A modern and authentic menu with Asian inspiration. I've been here several times for lunch and dinner and will be back many more times. The sangria is so good!
Enjoy!
So I had a few options in mind for dinner during our last night on a recent visit to Ottawa. But then I found out that Sidedoor offered a Happy Hour weekdays from 4:30-6:30 that included $2 off tacos. Done, done and done.
At any rate, we arrived at around 5:30 on a Friday night and the restaurant felt very low key, especially for a Happy Hour located in such a prime spot (in the Byward Market...

Little pricey for how much food you got there but this place offers you delicious plates. Tacos are tasty, donut platter is great as well. Lobster curry is delicious but only a little piece of lobster you can get. Papaya salad is delicious and beef dish was good. Basically...most of plates they offer you is good
We had a great lunch at this stylish eatery. Crispy fish tacos were our favorites but the beef and pulled pork were also excellent. Dim sum was BBQ tuna (outstanding) and the cocktails were generous and delish. Save room for the donuts! Served hot and dreamy, you won't be sorry.
The food was AMAZING! I came her with my friend for taco Tuesday and the service was excellent. I love the setting of the place; it was kind of semi-formal. Perfect for a first date! Because it was taco Tuesday, we had a wait a but longer for our orders, but totally worth it! And we had a great deal! It was only $6! The tacos were perfect! BEST I'VE HAD! I got the spicy beef and Crispy fish,... more
Haven't been here for a while, but food is as good as I remember it. It is definitely pricey, and their "happy hour" isn't much of a happy hour (very limited selection), however, only went during 'this time' due to being at capacity for the later hours.I highly recommend the "braised beef", with a side of rice. My fiancé also recommends the lobster item. Their fish tacos for appetizers are... more
The food and service was disappointing. We ordered the dim sum special and it was oily, tough & fishy tasting. We hailed the server over and told him we were not enjoying the dish. He said "ok I'll take it away" and left. We would have appreciated if he asked for feedback or suggested another dish to replace that one. We enjoyed the tacos and the beef lettuce wrap dishes, however wine service... more
A great find in the Market, not your typical tourist trap. The food is amazing and there's a great wine selection by the bottle or glass. Dessert is limited to donuts, which are made to order and delicious! Lovely evening out. Will be glib back again.
The bottom line up front is that while the Asian fusion food offered by Sidedoor is good, and sometimes very good, the service concept of "order what you want, when you want throughout the night" still needs refinement because as the staff made too many mistakes during our visit. Recommended, with caution.
Sidedoor shares the lower level of the same...

First of all I loved that I could make reservations online for this place--awesome! They do recommend 2.5hours for a meal here. I thought that was a long time, but I totally get why they do that. It's the kind of place where you share your food and take your time to enjoy every bite. The service was well paced and the servers were helpful.

Lots of interesting dishes on the menu.
My favorites:

My new favorite dining spot in Ottawa. Amazing service. Never feel rushed. Perfect for date night! Atmosphere is subdued and rustic but modern. Food is unique and playful... And did I mention delicious? Perfect for foodies looking to try original dishes. Drink selection is fantastic! Try Herb's choice before dinner!
We had two principal difficulties with the restaurant: first, the quality of food was very uneven! Tacos were very good, entrees tasteless, desert fine. The entree was salty and otherwise tasteless... at $28.00 plate! Second, the service was bad: our server began well, informative, attentive but not cloying. After taking the order, she disappeared. Totally. At the restaurant where you are... more

This restaurant is fantastic. It is a mix of Asian kitchen, Indian and mexican. I went twice so far and will certainly go back. To close the meal, dont hesitate to order the donuts. It is a must. In terms of main course, all meals were very good!
This restaurant ticked all the boxes of cuisine and as its July, we sat outside on the gorgeous patio where as the sun went down the fairy lights came on. Great meal overall. •RECOMMENDED•
As I was speachless with all these senses' explosions when I tasted my choices, it is still difficult for me to describe the unfathomable secrets underlyning this terrific fine cuisine...One word: astonishing!
The hostess foreshadowed the kind of service we could expect. She couldn't tell us how long we would have to wait for a table, then ended up giving us someone else's table which made for an awkward moment (settled kindly by the other couple who decided to have another drink and wait for the next table). The tacos are delicious... more

Complicated dinner process if a first timer as we were. Even after a lengthy explanation by a caring server I still wasn't sure what I would receive. Food quality is great; service took a while so do not be in a hurry.
After a few minutes of walking around, trying to find its location, we finally found the little side street that led to the Side Door Contemporary Kitchen, in Ottawa.

In 2012 and 2013, Sidedoor was by far my favourite restaurant in Ottawa : the papaya salad was so refreshing, and the duck was to die for. This is currently my favourite spot in Ottawa. I've hosted professional events here and it's my first choice for a private dinner. I love the food - especially the tacos, the atmosphere and the friendly professional staff.
In the summer, their patio is the perfect place to lounge with friends. #LOVE
We had 4 people and all shared small/large plates. We ate quite the variety of food. Portion wise, the small plates were slightly bigger than appetizers from other comparable restaurants (ie. The tacos were amazing, really tender and juicy meats with just enough kick... more
Great location around By Ward Market. Efficient service. Easy food. comfortable and vibrant atmosphere
I had been looking forward to trying the Sidedoor for a while. I was disappointed in several respects.
Not very gluten-free friendly: The taco shells which are traditionally made of corn are made with wheat and the fries are fried with other gluten containing foods. Deserts, except for sorbet (ho-hum), are gluten loaded.
We had gone especially for the tacos...

Nice combination of fine dining and casual atmosphere. The service was good. The food was delicious and beautiful. The menu was not as adventurous as I had hoped.
I like the atmosphere and service a little pricy. good place to go with a group so you can try different menu items.
Food was good/ very good but seating at the back of restaurant was not comfortable. It was way too noisy: level of music, table next door and seats are not comfortable and way too heavy to move towards the table. When your customers make reservations they should have a choice of window table and in your questionnaire there should be a choice for too loud when you ask about noise level.
Was there a few years ago and preferred the menu then. Now its a tasting menu. Food choices were tasty, however the best part was the fresh baked donuts for dessert (and this is coming from someone who normally does not crave sweets!).
This restaurant offers a fresh selection of food that strays from your typical fare. I love the Asian and Mexican influences. The atmosphere was great, excellent service, stellar drinks. My only gripe would be that he portions were a bit on the small side, particularly for a place that expects guests to share. The fish tacos, although excellent, were the... more

best flavorful papaya salad. Calamari taco fresh but a little too subtle. Tuna appetizer was chintzy on the tuna, mabye a total of

Artic char was excellent(4.5 stars), ate the crispy skin too. I think they should give you more vegetables.
Could use more wines by the glass choices
This place is good for an Ottawa restaurant (read: it wouldn't survive in Toronto or Montreal). Ramen on the lunch menu is pretty good, curries on the dinner menu were good, and the location is convenient.
We had heard about this Restaurant in Ottawa on the Byward Maket, but we could never find it on the market. I have nothing critical to say except the prices, but the food and service are excellent and make up for any shortcomings in value. It's one of the best restaurants in the city.
I love the lettuce wraps, lobster curry and duck....oh yeah, the fish tacos are great too.
A man of my appetite needs more than a tapas menu, but the food is great and fresh. I had 3 different types of tacos: the Korean pulled pork, the Bajan crispy fish, and the 5-spice turkey, all delicious but kinda small for my taste.
The cocktails are great!! I had the 2 Sidedoors, which is made with Woodford bourbon, triple sec, and fresh lemon. Sooooo good. I'd go back with less of an appetite
Really like this restaurant. Really nice decor and ambiance and not too noisy that you can't have a conversation with a date or a group of girlfriends.

Interesting menu in fusion style. Very good food. Quite pricey but quality superb. Good atmosphere. Knowledgeable waiters! Easy walking distance from central hotels. Well worth a visit.
All around great dinner. Great atmosphere. Tacos delish. Curries very tasty. Will definitely go back on next visit to Ottawa.

The place was hopping and had great ambiance, but the service was seriously lacking and very slow. For the price, I expected better. We cancelled part of our order and left because it took so long for the tacos to come out. Come on, how long does it take to assemble two three bite tacos? The layout of side door is just beautiful, no matter where in the restaurant you are seated.
The in house cocktails are very tasty, and decently priced. I've been to side door two or three times and I have to say, while it's on the pricier side, it is delicious food!

I’m still trying to figure out what Sidedoor is all about. It’s looks like a fusion of Mexican and Asian cuisine. There are tacos, Indian and Thai curries, Chinese dumplings and Japanese innovations.
