Nice enough place has good variety. Sushi at the table, teppan grills and a sushi "boat" section. Whatever you want, they seem to have it. Tables with low seating for parties as well. The sushi itself is pretty good, sometimes a bit too "warm".
This restaurant has an extensive menu. We dine in or take out - mostly sushi. We find the love boat a good choice for take out as it's easy to order and has a good variety and amount of items that's easily shared. It's certainly not the best sushi in town and we too find it too warm for our liking.
the sushi at sakana grill isn't that good. the rice is always too dry and the fish is always too warm. not impressed with the place.
Okay, so many don't agree, but I'm a picky sushi eater. I don't find the sushi here that good. Pieces are a bit on the small size, fish isn't THAT fresh, and the rice is often dry. If you're picky, keep looking. Though it is reasonably priced, so you get what you pay for.
A fun place to take a group. The staff is friendly and efficient and the show is entertaining.
Happy hour for sushi is worth a late night trip.
This place is good for lunch , fast service and fairly good sushi. Not excellent - but good. And I keep going back.
One of my favorite places for inexpensive sushi and at later hours, too.
not bad during happy hours...(its an azn thing)
Food was good, atmosphere was excellent, the service was amazing, and we absolutely loved the dynamite roll. The magician was also pretty good.
This is definately not the best sushi in Calgary. It is mediocre at best.
Great deep fried oysters! YUM
I took some out of town colleagues for dinner one night last week who were looking for Japanese. The Sakana Grill did not let us down. The wine was quite good and the food was noticeably fresh. I liked the added bonus of the free small roll we received before our meal. I also like the calming atmosphere the Sakana... more
by (from ) September 909 - Sushi is not really my thing, but my girlfriend really likes it. So I took her out for lunch to Sakana Grille downtown, just off of China Town. I was expecting to leave hungry but was pleasantly surprised. We both had the lunch special and were able to choose different things which was perfect, because she wanted sushi and I didn't. The miso soup to start was great... more
Sakana was the first time I had sushi when I was ten. I thought it was the best thing ever, thus beginning my love for sushi.I've been trying out many other places and because my sister worked at many Japanese restaurants at the time, also taught me how to "train" my tastebuds.I didn't go to Sakana until a couple years later, which I think was when they were at their worst. The service and food... more
in town however, the Service is awesome, the Value is there and unlike some of the sushi placed ive had in this city the food actually comes out fresh and doesnt taste like it has been sitting out for very long. the Happy Hour is great, the prices cannot be beat thats for sure. I will definitely come here again, I give it 4 stars because I enjoy all the reason I didnt give it 5 is that I feel... more
I went here when I was starting University and it was pretty decent. I always loved the interior, it's so fancy and gives off a nice Japanese theme. As years passed, I noticed this place was going down hill. One time I ate there, i think I had food poisoning because I had the worst stomachache after the Udon + Sushi. Anyways I didn't go back for a while. My friends made me go again and the menu... more
The sushi is ok, nothing really special about it. The menu doesn't really have a very good selection. The wait for the food took forever! The table beside arrived much later and got their food first, the waitress made small talk often and was very friendly, it's understandable to give slightly better treatment to those who spend quite alot and order heaps, however this seemed a little too much,... more
by Andrea (from Calgary) September 2011 - We visited Sakana Grill for an early dinner. Our parents like going early because if you order before 4:30, some of the "Happy Love Boats" are half price. The food was okay - nothing to rave about. The boats come with an assortment of sushi, dumplings, caifornia rolls, tempura and teriyaki chicken. All I can say is that I am happy the food was half... more
for their happy hour special
I love the decor of this restaurant, because its traditional Japanese style with a modern flair to it. The food here is always fantastic. Although it does come with along wait. I ordered the dragon rolls and dynamite rolls and could honestly say that it was one of the best I've tasted in Calgary. The only thing that does need improving is the service and the speed that the food comes out.
by Mary (from Calgary) July 2011 - We visited Sakana grill during happy hour at the crowfoot location. Even though it was happy hour, it was not that busy. There were five other tables that were empty. We waited for a while before our server introduced herself and offered drinks. We ordered our usual, sushi boat, good enough for two people. The sashimi that came in the boat was not all that... more
by Elaine (from Calgary) June 2011 - Sakana Grill has happy hour which means the sushi is usually just a little bit more than half the original price. You can check times of the happy hour on their website. The quality of the sushi isn’t great but because of the great price that I am paying, I always go back. I wouldn’t pay full price for this place though as I do think there are other sushi... more
I went with my boyfriend, sister and brother the other day to sakana grill and I will definitely not be back. Its a nice restaurant with nice decorations, but we arent here for just scenery right? The lady who served us asked for our order without writing down the items. I thought: "wow very good memory"...until she came back 3 more times to confirm the order. It doesnt hurt to grab a pen and a... more
but go in after nine and everything is super discounted, which keeps me going back!
by Henry (from Calgary) March 2011 - Sakana Grill is a small chain of Japanese restaurants which has two locations in Calgary. One is located at Crowfoot Circle in the NW quadrant and the other is located a block away from Chinatown. They are known to have happy hour specials which is the best time to visit. Happy hour specials are available between 3pm and 5pm and after 9pm in the evenings.... more
and the atmosphere was pretty pleasant! The surroundings were nice with deep, dark wood, and a small water fountain with a mini-bridge crossing at the entrance. Makes for a great place to hang out and have some food. The Coconut Surprise dessert (that's the picture I uploaded) is yummy - definitely worth trying out! The Magician gives you a cool experience on his tricks, but since I went with 4... more
The decor is nice, water fountain at the entrance, bridgeway to dining room. Unfortunately the food and sushi there is just average, not completely up to par with other Japanese restaurants out there. Generally I would only go to Sakana Grill during their happy hour to get cheap but average sushi. No sense in paying full price to get average sushi. The service at the downtown location was not... more
Sakana Grill was one of the first Japanese Restaurants I tried in Calgary. Many a fun evening have been spent with friends over sushi and saki, and I can proudly say that I deflowered
Food was good, service was okay, but watch for the magician that they hired to provided entertainment for their customers at their tables. He'll ask you for a $5 bill to perform one of the tricks, which will rip and soil the bill. At the end of the show, he pretty much expects you to not bother taking the bill back because of the mess and will gladly pocket it himself. To me, that's a cheap and... more
After calling to find out the hours and being told we wouldn't make last call, we showed up anyways (only because it was the only thing open late enough) and they gave us a table. Special rolls aren't on the menu and depending where you're sitting you don't get the entire list. Service was poor probably because it was the end of the night. Chefs getting off work walked by and smelled like... more
Went to Sakana Grill at 6pm last night for a meal with the children and grandparents. After arriving at 6pm, and ordering by 6:15, we did not see any food until just after 7pm. Also, we did not see our server for most of this time. We were left to wonder what was going on.When the food did arrive, the Tempura side dishes arrive 15 minutes ahead of everything else. The dishes that we had... more
I was at Sakana Grill for lunch yesterday with two friends. One of them ordered a bento box while my other friend and I shared a variety of rolls. Nothing out of the extraordinary, right? Except Sakana Grill now has those specialty creative rolls that most other restaurants already have too. We decided to share one that had scallop and shrimp tempura drizzled with a sweet sauce... it was... more
Mediocre sushi for a reasonable price especially the happy hour. However, the customer service has gone downhill the past few months. The server takes forever to order the food, refresh the drinks and either shy/snobby/rude/indifferent. The service better smarten up or expect less customers.
I've only been once, but I won't be back. I have no reason to, with all the excellent Japanese places in town. The food was mediocre. The miso soup was too salty, the sushi was a little dry and unspecial. Nothing really stood out. Moreover, the service was a little grouchy! I've heard rumours that they discriminate against non-asian-looking customers. I find that a little hilarious, since the... more
Love this place except for last time I took a bite of sushi and there was glass in it. Our server was great and she brought out a new boat but still charged us.
i been there 3 time, first time , we ordered love boat, sushi was over priced for that price, services was alright...... 2nd time was lunch hour, we ordered udon, it took 15 mins to seat us, but there was so much empty seats in there, just dont get it why it took so long..... the noodle took an other 15 mins to come up....wasnt any special....... 3 times was my last time there, we ordered some... more

Definitely overrated! The sushi is not good by any means and the portions are horrible. During happy hour the lunch bento is a rip off! Go to Ogam in Dragon City where Sushi Kai use to be where you will get better servings where you probably need take out and for the low price of just $9.50!! The bento at Sakana gives you like 5 pieces of chicken I swear and just everything is proportionally... more
by Christopher (from Calgary) September 2010 - Dropped in here the other evening with two kids. One was shouting and the other was full of energy. The kids did not affect the service, and the restaurant noise was enough to shield their noise. Food was good, delivered quickly, although pieces of sushi are smaller than I like. At the end of our meal, they gave us a fruit bowl and some Pocky... more
Our anniversary, 10 people in our group. Chef made dinner right in front of us, great food, veggies, chicken, beef, shrimp. Had a great time, chef was funny, interactive. My wife had a glass of wine, (the special came with 2 beers for 2 bucks) and an... more

by Ricky (from Calgary) June 2010 - Sakana Grill currently has a special where after 9pm every night there's a pretty good discount for sushi boats and combos. Especially when the sushi there is actually pretty good. Our service was good and the... more
Sakana Grill has been around for a long time and has gone through a lot of changes over the years. As it stands, I like to think Sakana Grill is the restaurant I compare every other Japanese restaurant to in Calgary as the "norm".Their portions are good (I'm full without dishing out a wad of cash not mentioning the "Happy Hour" deals), their sushi is good (I've definitely had much worse), their... more
The maki is overpriced Garbage. My bill came to $60 and I'm still starving... Worst sushi in #yyc
by Albert (from Calgary) September 2009 - Your selection of Japanese restaurants is very limited if you want to find something very filling for cheap. This is where Sakana Grill comes in. The sushi in my opinion is awful. The salmon looks slimy and the fish in general is not fresh. The main draw factor for this restaurant is the price. I have been to Sakana during normal evenings and their... more
Everything was great about this place. Except the food. All 3 of us felt very sick afterwards and will not be going back.
by Mary (from Calgary) August 2009 - I’ve been to this place several times; my friends and I often go for late night sushi. Their Love Boat is $21.99 after 10pm. We went last week after having watched a movie. The reason I like this place so much is for two reasons. Firstly, the price is fairly decent for what you get, I never end up finishing it all. Secondly, I’m not a hardcore sushi fan so I... more
by Mary (from Calgary) August 2009 - If you are looking for a cheap sushi restaurant, Sakana Grill is the stop for you! Everyday, their Happy hour, which runs from 2 pm - 4 pm and 9pm-12am, has special bento boxes, love boats and individual sushi in for about 50% of the original price. Our order of choice is usually the love boats. The love boat deluxe consists of teriyaki chicken, tempura,... more
The sushi love boat deluxe during happy hour is only about $20, and it comes with everything on the menu pretty much. It's a great deal, for the amount of food you get. Everything tastes delicious, and the price is unbeatable.
by Tamara (from Edmonton) July 2009 - I loved the atmosphere and the decor, it was beautifully authentic. The staff and service was friendly, helpful and quick. We ordered a lot of different sushi, sashimi, dinner items, as well as, hot sake. Prices equaled the portions and the quality. The food presentation was appetizing and the food was absolutely delicious. I would definitely return and... more
It's definitely some of the cheaper sushi to be found in Calgary, but I would have a hard time recommending Sakana Grill to anyone other than people new to sushi (and even then, Maruju Sushi just 10 blocks away is far better for pretty much the same cost). The portions are fair given their low price point, but the quality simply isn't there. I would strongly suggest trying Wa's (just North of... more
This restaurant has quality food. Always try the sushi love boat deluxe. Its filled with sushi rolls, sashimi, teriyaki chicken, tempura and more! It is also served with ice cream. Go during happy hour to dine for less!
by Jason (from Calgary) June 2009 - What would you say if I told you that you could pay half price for sushi? Is that something you would be interested in? Ok, I stole part of the line from Entourage, but there really is a happy hour at Sakana Grill where you can order the Love Boat that is normally $42.95 for about $22.00 and for that price you get a lot of sushi. There is enough California... more
by Susan (from Calgary) June 2009 - Me and a couple of friends tried out the Sakana Grill at the Crowfoot location for dinner since we heard it’s much better than the downtown location. This is a great little sushi restaurant. In my opinion, it's the best one in Chinatown. The floating sushi bar at the back is great...but they have an excellent menu that you can order from as well. The hibachi-grills are great entertainment as well ... you know, the chefs with the "flying knives".Peter Kinjo, who now has his own self-named restaurant down on Macleod trail south of Chinook, used... more

Went there with 2 kids, and had an absolute great time. Very good service, excellent atmosphere and Great tasty food. Trust me, coming from a french familly, it is hard to admit when a food is Tasty, but not only that, it is the first time we did enjoy sushi, with a taste of freshness. We enjoyed the atmosphere. It was a lot of fun. We found the food to be authentic Japanese as were the servers. We will be making it a "for sure" stop the next time we are in Calgary.
For the novice, the floating boat parade gives you a chance to actually see what you are ordering. If you know the cuisine, there is a wide variety of Japanese dishes to choose from. In either case, the waitstaff is helpful and friendly. Good value.
Great place to take clients for Sushi! I really enjoy the sushi boats, good size pieces ( not to big). You can take new sushi people and not scare them off the food. Great Dynomite rolls! Cheers,
Great value for your money. Fun atmosphere and dining environment. I recommend Sakana especially for lunch.
I've been to this restaurant several times and I love it. The servers are always polite and helpful, the food is delicious and reasonably priced, and the menu offers a wide variety of japanese treats. Two people can have a delicious, filling japanese lunch with desert and tea for under $30 easily.
Most amazing Dynamite Rolls on Earth! Don't miss. Chicken Katsu is excellent also. DW www.DavidWinning.com
Great environment; great food. Well worth the trip (plus a late night discount sushi menu to boot).
I have been to this restaurant many, many times. Very good food. All varieties of Japanese food. Very funny and entertaining chef. Try the Love Boat, it's for two - All kinds of sushi.
I use to eat here regularly but I've noticed that the food has gotten much worse lately. The sushi tasted really nasty.
We went there for a friends birthday party. My husband and I do not eat sushi, but there was many items to choose from... Very good!! Thank you!!
Great food and service. Their birhtday parties are a blast.
