The cellar of what used to be Montréal's first women's prison hardly sounds like the ideal setting for an Italian restaurant, but fear not: Mama Emma's cooking is satisfying enough to drive out any lingering ghosts from those sad days. The place's stone walls and heavy beams make an ideal, catacomb-like setting for such Roman specialties as roasted lamb with grilled vegetables, mushroom pasta,... plus
I went with an office group sending off one of our colleagues on her maternity leave. Her husband is Italian, she knows the restaurant well, so did two other Italians at our table. We had probably the best table on the terasse, the chairs are very comfortable - very nice setting. There were stories of Emma cooking in the kitchen, creating an aura of looking forward to an authentic Italian... plus
Situé dans ce qui fut la première prison de femmes, Restaurant Da Emma vous sert une cuisine traditi... Bref, c'est mon avis et je le partage !
I love this restaurant.I go every chance I could. The food is fantastic and Luigi always makes me feel like part of the family. GREAT JOB!
Worst food anywhere. The pasta was not cooked. The veal was overcooked, and the service was poor. AT the end it cost over $1000.00 for 6 people. Please avoid this resturant at all costs.
Mauvais.
best restaurent ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sadly changed from its original incredibly charming and much more affordable version when it was uptown Da Emma is still excellent Roman fare served with love.
Portion sizes for many (though not all, so ask) items are "family style" though you will not be TOLD that; they are happy to serve a couple of 2 food for 6!
Although I am Italian I've never had the desire to eat tripe. Until we visited Da Emma. I asked the waiter to put a full portion on the table for an appetizer. It knocked our socks off! The veal stock with noodle soup was to die for. My wife had the porterhouse steak that could stand up to any steakhouse in Boston. I had the roasted suckling pig. The contrast between sweet tender and... plus
very chic...wonderful outdoor ambiance...excellent service...food presentation and taste..excellent
"""Excellent roman cuisine in Old Montreal. Only down side is that it is located in an old cave, making it a little depressing on sunny summer days."""
"""Expertly prepared Roman style cuisine served in a historic building that housed Montreal's first women's prison. Although not a regular menu item, there is no doubt that Emma serves up the best lasagna in Montreal. Although most opt for her delicious past"""
"""Can be intimidating, menu is recited from a black board, table side (in Italian nonetheless). Beautifully executed Italian standards. Lovely decor, minimal and elegant. Will set you back a few, but well worth the authentic raggu!"""
excellent italian food in an ancient stone building that used to be a woman's prison
An old prison one must get used to the dungeon like feel. A little odd to watch grandma in the kitchen. Altogether fun and cool
More expensive than some of my fav. NY spots. Mozz appetizer with tomato was very good. Veal meatballs were very bland and pasta was a small serving in a tasteless watery tomato sauce. high priced wine list- csn't reccomend.
good food, spotty service - our waiter kept disappearing; thankfully, the server for the table next to us realized that we wanted dessert, coffee and some dessert wine.
Great food, great waiters. Emma herself was graceous and friendly. Surrounded by returning patrons, since the food was so good. And now I'll be one of them.
A rainy night in Montreal, but we do have a car....Da Emma is at the the southern tip of Old Montreal with a large parking lot. Reviews were mostly very good - the setting was perfect for this type of night.
De Emma is located in a building that was formerly a women's prison - a dreary night added to the mood. We enter through a heavy metal door and descend a few steps into a "cellar" - very...

We had high hopes for Da Emma and were unfortunately disappointed. The mozzarella appetizer was very good but overall it was th exception and there was nothing special about this food from the entrees to the dessert. The wine list is very good but our server acted like he would rather be doing just about anything else than serving us that night. All in all, an overpriced and lackluster meal.
Very nice place. Great atmosphere. Delicious food. But be prepared to empty your wallet.
The harder to find the better the restaurant? That may be true in this case. The cool, dark, stone interior is chic and pleasantly noisy. (I am told it was Montreal's first woman's prison and indeed the stone columns and arches have a strangely compelling gothic quality...)
We were told this was the best Italian Restaurant in Old Montreal. They were serving in the garden area. It was beautiful at night, very upscale but they allowed smoking which was offensive. They should have it posted "Smoking allowed". We would have chosen inside. The free brushetta was wonderful and the tomato with mozzarella and oil was great. The entres were not as outstanding but still... plus
This was the best fettuccini I have ever tasted. We saw some clebs there too. Highly recommened.
I love Da Emma, we go there each time we visit Montreal and have had fantastic service, food and atmosphere. I do not understand the poor ratings in here. I have gone there at least 10 times and each and every time a perfect evening well worth the trip !!!!!!!
Very trendy and impossible to find. Montreal restaurants tend to look good OR taste good, but not both. Da Emma seems to have fingured out the trick of doing both. Wine list is impressive, with a hundred or more Italian vintages. Pasta and meat are both prepared well.
Best meal in Montreal. Mama Emma presides over the kitchen, and produces succulent roasted meats, and grilled veal and fish.

One of Montreal's best known Italian restaurants, Da Emma is actually a transplant from Little Italy to Old Montreal; the tradition of fine cuisine hasn't suffered, even if the current setting is a former prison! It is run with a flair for the dramatic and an obvious love of food. In the Roman tradition, the menu eschews faddish components and sticks to the basics: classics like mozzarella... plus
