We were revisiting the Red Stag, having discovered it on a previous visit a couple of years ago. We managed to fit in a few visits during this stay in Halifax. The staff are so friendly and engaging, the beer is great, and the food is lovely. My husband swears theirs is the best chowder, and the pulled pork sandwich... more
Keith's makes some excellent beer, and it's all available, plus some interesting infusions that they play with. Service is ok to good. Food is good to very good. Fun atmosphere, great patio that is often full.
I have always wanted to visit the brewery and the pub, so, months prior to my trip, I read tens of reviews on the place, but due to time constraints, we could not do the brewery tour, but still decided to have a meal here.
What an expensive mistake it was.
Arriving just before 8pm on a Sunday (yes, the...

We stopped in for lunch after taking the brewery tour. I had the fish fry and it was one of the best I've had, and I've had a lot of fish fries. My wife loved the lamb burger with goat cheese. Very helpful server who also explained where the nearest liquor store was so we could buy some of their... more
We recently stopped at The Red Stag Tavern after visiting the Alexander Keiths Brewery in Halifax and i ate the best fish and chips I ever had. Their tartar sauce is unbelievable. Really good service, nice ambiance and great food. I would recommend it to anyone. Plus I like the outfit for the waitresses, it makes it truly scottish.
We stopped here for lunch just before we went on the Alexander Keith's brewery tour. We sat ourselves down - so that was quick, but initial greetings by a server was slow. The entire time we were there, service was quite slow.
The brunch menu was quite limited in options but makes perfect sense. We ordered the Lobster Chowder to...

WOW. I really wish I had read the recent reviews, and not relied on the total number of positives going back months and years.
This place is atrocious. Seriously some of the most disgusting food I have ever eaten. There is no other way to put it.
I came here for a late dinner and should've been tipped off that...

Two years ago, my wife and I ended our 2+ week maritime vacation at the Red Stag. The people were really friendly, my wife had an iceberg (Keith’s topped with a slush margarita, Yea baby), and we ended up buying two of the great pilsner glasses. It really put the cherry on top of a great vacation. Great People -... more
I visited the Red Stag for lunch with a friend today. We arrived at noon, and noticed everyone was inside, not on the 4th story patio. After we found a table with a view of the Halifax waterfront and Harbour we realized why we were the only ones there. It was very windy, but we suffered through it because we... more
Friendly staff, great atmosphere, and wonderful comfort food. Priced well and huge servings. Lobster Mac n' Cheese, nachos and Lobster Red Pepper dip were to say the least delicious! One of our new favourites!
I was very happy with my food. The burger was tasty and large fries like I love!
That Friday, there was a concert and that is the reason why the service was slow. I could see our waitress watching to it instead of serving us. Otherwise the atmosphere was awesome and it was a great night out!
Would go back...

Food just so so.Do not order the mango shrimp bake.very oily from thick cheese layer and the choice of ingredients just don't seem to fit together. The redeeming factor is the wait staff.Very friendly and efficient.
Loved the fish & chips!!! Very quick to get our order, great service, and the atmosphere was good too.
Thanks
We hadn't been here for several years (maybe 15) and we don't know why we stayed away so long. The Red Stag is staffed by friendly people that seem to really pay attention to what you want and what you need. The menu is large, with a good selection of seafood (as you would expect in Halifax). There were six... more
The Red Stag Tavern is a must should you find yourself visiting in Halifax. Located in the heart of downtown Historic Halifax and in one of the most Historic buildings in Halifax. The Alexander Keith's Brewery building. Also located within the building are tours of the historic brewery . But visit the Red Stag and find yourself among some of... more
Service was excellent, food just ok. Nachos were expensive but didn't seem to have much on them- just carmalized onions, a handful of tomatoes and some banana peppers. I ordered the Lobster mac & cheese which was actually penne noodles and had so much parm I could barely eat it. Cheesecake for dessert was delicious. Would probably return but maybe... more
When my friend and I want to go out for a quiet dinner with good food and drink - this is our new go to place. We've had excellent food and service each time. My second trip to Halifax and I love this bar! Great service and really good beers. Want to come back in the summer with my sister Angie and our husbands.
The atmosphere is what first grabs you when you walk in to this pub housed in one of Halifax's oldest buildings, the Alexander Keith's Brewery. The friendly, knowledgeable staff make you feel right at home. The beer is cold, the food hot, plenty and tasty. Whether you want traditional Nova Scotia seafood, a steak or a burger you can't go... more
My son and I had lunch at the Red Stag yesterday. I usually order their fish and chips, which are the best around. However, this time I decided to be more adventurous and try the Bombay Chicken Pasta, which as the name suggests, is chicken and pasta in a curry/dijon sauce. The pasta was perfectly cooked al dente and the... more
Service doesn't get any better than this. Accommodating, attentive, accurate, knowledgeable, best service ever. Carissa made our weekend brake for us. Thank you
Love the Red Stag! Great menu and the staff are always friendly. Something for everyone. Perfect venue for casual dining, small events and get togethers.
We visited this tavern in January 2014 for lunch. The lobster chowder was an excellent choice. It was thick and had lots of seafood including big pieces of meat from the claws. The handsome server in his stylish kilt was very friendly. Sure hope to return in the near future when we visit Halifax!
Food very good and recommend the strawberry spinach salad and blueberry cheesecake. Our waitress was very friendly and gave great service.
My husband went to the Red Stag Jan 11. This was our first time here. We have heard many good things about it.
The atmosphere is very tavern like with lots of unique touches. It is small, cozy and very welcoming.
My husband ordered a burger and potato wedges while I had hot wings and wedges. Both meals were good...

Excellent pub food, and the staff!!! We could not get over how the staff went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed our rainy afternoon in the tavern.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a real east coast feel while enjoying an ice cold beer!
Stopped in to the Red Stag this afternoon (Sunday November 24th 2013) for lunch while in town for a show. A friend of mine (Morgan) works there and I've heard some very good things. Every word of it is true!

I had dinner here tonight, a wet and rainy night in Halifax. I am staying at the Marriott next door and not wanting to face the rain, I slipped into this place. Ate with a couple of friends and had the best nachos I've ever had. The server was prompt and frequented the table often making sure we never went dry! Thank you Morgan. The Calypso Burger was done perfectly with a nice big juicy patty. Would definitely recommend this place in the Alexander Keith's Brewery.
Visited during a mid afternoon time frame. The restaurant was celebrating the 213th birthday of the man who invented the brewing process used in the brewery. The beer (amber) was cold and had a "hops" taste. The Lobster Chowder was excellent and the best I have ever tasted. Really enjoyed the wait staff who were quick with refills and gave... more
located inside the alexander keiths brewery, being our second time visiting here off of a cruise ship my wife and I always stop into the red stag for a couple of beers. they always have alexander keiths latest offering. the bartenders and waitstaff are always very friendly.
Since we were on a cruise and only in Halifax for a short time we stopped at the Red Stag Tavern for their highly rated lobster chowder. It was a little pricey but really delicious. We have dined here before and it was very good but that was many years ago. We met up with friends here while in port for the day. Ate here at lunchtime. The fish and chips were ok, but a fish little dry. Beer was good though! Service friendly and prompt
When we walked in, their sign said best fish and chips in town. Well, clearly we had to try and see if it was true! And it was, the batter to fish ratio was great and the chips were fresh and tasty. And we topped it off with a pint of Keith's which was only appropriate as we were at... more

We both decided to try the fish & chips at the Red Stag tavern this evening & found the portions were generous with two portions of fish & plenty of delicious chips. Loved our meals at the Red Stag Tavern, our server was a little slow but there were some big groups in the restaurant so it's understandable (ours was a group of 2). Beer was of course fantastic, as was the atmosphere! Glad we stumbled across this little gem.
On a recent overnight trip to Halifax we stopped into the Red Stag Tavern because it was a block away from our hotel and we did not arrive in town until 8 pm...we wanted someplace close. We did the tour of the Keith's brewery and then came here for dinner. The menu was OK, but not a full pub menu. The food was good and the service nice.
Through its many incarnations, the location that is now the Red Stag Tavern has been a long-time favourite. The latest version has stepped up the food, with a very good fish and chips, original nachos and tasty coconut shrimp among a number of options, including a good variety of lobster dishes on the summer menu. The roof-top deck is fun,... more

This is not a good dining experience! We arrived at around 615 p.m. on on Sunday and were greeted by a very friendly waitress who said there would be a 20 minute wait for a table as the kitchen was backed up. We asked if we could sit down and have a drink as we could see there were tables... more

The Red Stag is located next to the Keith's brewery, inside a closed replica of an old village.
Red Stag is really nice inside, has a pool table and is the perfect spot for an ITANS event. Inexpensive drinks as well.
A great pub for having a few beers with buddies. Their friendly waitresses in high-school outfits with their witty remarks make ordering drinks a pleasant experience.
It's also a good place for informal corporate events. ITANS/CIPS holds monthly meetings there and it's perfect.
Located in the Alexander Keith’s Brewery, the Red Stag offers Maritime hospitality in a historic setting. Nightly specials including half-price appetizers and two-for-one. Or try the fish and chips (voted best in the city). A wide selection of beer on tap. Seasonal rooftop patio.
