I always like this place. Fresh pastas, killer cannoli, diverse Italian menu with seafood, chicken, lamb... lots of stuff. Really nice, every changing list of specials. Hand-made local sausage and baked bread. Top notch service. Romantic setting with lots of wood and antiques. Tonight my cafe latte was a little on the cool side and the white bean soup was... more
After driving by for years, meaning to stop in, we finally ate here - and were very glad! To be honest, it doesn't look like much from the street, but once you're inside and above street level, the views out the large front windows are of trees and mountains, and the warm interior makes you feel right at home.

The Poor Italian is one of our favourite restaurants. The food is consistently fantastic with beautifully developed flavour. The wine list is expansive. The service is always impeccable, and if we are lucky, we are able to have Kamila as our server. She is wonderful and unforgettable.
I enjoyed a great meal at the PI on Sat Feb 22.
The location was difficult to find as our GPS glitched out and would not accept the address but a quick call to the restaurant cleared everything up. It really is near the border of Burnaby. I expected it to be near Commercial Drive where all the other Italian...

We visited this restaurant this evening finally.....I must have driven by it more times than I can count. Really glad that we did finally stop, we had a very enjoyable dining experience. Location is excellent, very easy to get to, lots of parking, which makes the experience start out the right way. The decor and the ambience is wonderful, the... more
Our first visit to the Poor Italian. It was better than we expected. The service was 10 out of 10. Everyone was attentive and efficient but not overwhelming. Good food and good service! Just dropped in after seeing War Horse at the QE it was enroute home. We were very pleased and will return. The pappardelle with braised lamb was excellent as was the gnocchi special.
Food was terrible, service was good.
We had the shellfish seafood pasta we could feel the sand in our mouth. The place was not busy
Wonderful friendly service.
Very good food!
I had the rissotto and it was awesome. My husband had the veal and it was very tender and flavorful.
Prices very reasonable!
We took our family(6 people to an early meal around 5pm) to the Poor Italian. It was a bit pricey, but the food was very good and the service was too. I would recommend, but it is not low priced!
This is the way I like a restaurant. Good food, good service, an enjoyable place to have a meal. The food is excellent and the service is attentive without being intrusive.
Don't be put off by the location - an old strip mall on a busy street. Many businesses have come and gone from this location but it looks like Poor Italian is here to stay.
Food - right from the anti-pasti plate through the chocolate hazelnut gelato, the food didn't disappoint. We tried their "primavera" (spring) menu - opting for...

My wife suprised me with an invitation to dinner at The Poor Italian Ristorante and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. We were fortunate to be able to get in, for the 'Dine Out Vancouver' was about to end..so it was a busy nite...plus the SuperBowl was on. We were a little disappointed to see TV ..and my wife mentioned it... more
We came here for Dine Out Vancouver and it was excellent. It did not disappoint which I am thankful for because I've recently had a string of meals that have fallen short. We had a party of 8 and they seated us comfortably. To start the foccacia was excellent so I could've just sat there and just eaten bread. I... more
Been here at least 6 times over the last 24 months. Great location when you want to meet friends from the burbs. 10 minutes from North Van. Reservations are recommended. We had to go early as we booked same day. Wide range of ages of customers. Staff attentive, food was great again. BC wines very reasonably priced. The Montepulciano was... more
A friend suggested I visit Poor Italian Ristorante: Thank you Annemarie! I was pleasantly surprised to find a fine Italian restaurant with good food & service on a site in East Vancouver which has housed a succession of down-market eateries during the past 40 years--probably more!
This restaurant was excellent. The atmosphere was so warm and inviting. The food was so yummy. Price point is a little high but standard for a higher end restaurant and well worth every penny. Service was great too. Reverse your car in the parking spot, it gets tight once the lot is full!
Really enjoyed my visit to this restaurant. Atmosphere was open & warm. Service was impeccable and unpretentious. Food was lovely.......I had the Veal Marsala and enjoyed every morsel. Didn't find the Antipasto a very good value. My dinner companion had the prawns as an appetizer and they were excellent. She had the chicken as her main course and enjoyed it... more
I waited months to finally get to go to the Poor Italian and was totally disappointed. We had been told not to have high expectations and sadly everything we had heard was true. Where's the pasta, some music, some atmosphere. Seafood festival and there was ling cod on the menu..hmmm. No chicken was available so we shared a lasagne and... more
Very expensive wine. No chicken dishes - I found this odd - they should make some. I had the halibut which was nice but too salty. Others had lasagna which was good. Nice atmosphere and decor. Friendly staff.
FIRST TIME TO THIS RESTAURANT, the food, service and atmosphere were very good, will definiely return. Portion sizes just right for us. One of our party is vegetarian and the chef cooked special dishes for her that were not on the menu, very impressive.
We have eaten here twice now, and the first time was shortly after they had opened. We found our service was so-so only and the food was not as impressive as we were hoping for. However, being fair, we decided to try the restaurant again with my brother, his wife and our visiting father. I ordered the Crab Linguine, my... more
This must be the best restaurant in Burnaby. We have been here a few times and the only disappointment was for Valentine's day. My fish came full of bones and the waiter tried to convince me that it was the cut?? Anyway, the appetizers and the pasta is excellent, the meat dishes too. They have a good selection of wines,... more
We arrived spontaneously at about 8pm and were graciously seated. Our waiter was attentive and came for a drink order very quickly. And before we could be brought that order, the hostess returned to our table and said she had a better table ( not so close to the kitchen entrance) open up and would we like to move. We... more
Well we finally did.
First I have to say the food was very well presented and was tasty.
The service was great.
Now for the price it was still average.
I had the Ossobucco and at $33.00, there should have been some veggies.
The crab and lobster bisque was good and the creme brulle was wonderful.
Yet for the price,...

Visited as a party of six (three couples). We had a reservation and it was honoured promptly and without incident. The table was of an appropriate size for the group, the table setting was handsome and the seating was comfortable.
The waiter was reasonably attentive with drink orders but it did take a little while to get our food order...

Enjoyed the ambience of this Italian restaurant. Easy to get to with ample parking infront. Lots of food variety on the menu with a variation in price range. Note main entrees are upper end pricing over $30 but the pasta dishes are made fresh and much more affordable 16 - 20 per dish. Extensive wine list that will fit many... more
My children had given me a gift card for the restaurant. My husband and I went for an early New Years dinner.
The food was hot and cool as needed. The selection of wines was wonderful. I had the home made ravioli, stuffed with spinach and ricotta, they melted in my mouth.
My husband had the stuffed chicken breast with...

The Poor Italian's chef trained in Italy for many years and it shows. I dined there with friends the other night and we were treated to a spectacular meal. We started with the antipasto platter which was huge and colorful with all kinds of roasted veggies, bruschetta and prosciutto. My friends and I moved on to the pesto linguine which... more
Sure this is a pretty good Italian Restaurant and worth a try. It is higher end with all the ruffles and truffles so expect lunch or dinner to be a wallet challenge especially if you enjoy wine with your meals. The servers are area breed and fit the job well. They are really very nice and helpful. My complaint is... more
As part of my responsibilities at work, I decided to take a colleague out for an impromto lunch. I must say there was plenty of room in the dining area around noon and the wait staff was polite, efficient and very well versed in how to accomodate and make clients feel welcome.

I had heard good things about this restaurant and was not disappointed. The food was amazing, and the service was excellent and friendly.
We've driven by the Poor Italian hundreds of times and finally decided to give it a try. Our only regret was not doing this long ago. The food was superb, the wine list incredible (and award winning, we found out later) and the service excellent. It is professionally run (led by a Maitre'de by the name of Gianfranco who is... more
My husband and I went for a rare night out without the children. We were recomended this restaurant from a friend and decided to try it.

Being Italian we like to try out different restaurants that serve Italian food. The four of us decided on the Poor Italian. We had read different reviews good and bad but I can tell you we were definately not disspointed. We all had different menu items from the Roman soup to the risotto to the veal. I had the Duck... more
On our first visit to the restaurant to celebrate a friend's 50th birthday we were offered a "chef's surprise." The chef chose the dishes for our four course meal. The portions were just right and beautifully served. Best of all, every dish was delicious and well cooked - definitely a meal to remember. It was busy and quite noisy but... more
The service was spotty -- several different young servers brought our food and the maitre'd/sommelier was fawning and tipsy. The appetizers were very small, although prettily presented. The beef carpaccio was sliced too thick and was slightly chewy. I had the Ossobuco; it was soupy and the marrow in the beef bones was stale -- offensive for being one of... more
if we didn't have to wait 45 minutes from the time of our reservation, the night would've been perfect. The host and our waiter were very nice though and even offered us complimentary wine and dessert. I had the veal chop and hubby had the gnocci. Both are highly recommended! We also shared the beef carpaccio which was also super... more
Had lunch on Friday the 21st Jan. 2011, loved it. The service was prompt and flawless, the decor rustic as should be for an Italian restaurant. I think the restaurant is also very aptly named - as the food served at the Poor Italian reminded me so of "La Cucina Povera” of Tuscany, a term the locals use to refer... more
