A European-style hostel with a real sense of style, the Painted Turtle is a revamped vintage hotel in the very center of downtown Nanaimo's shopping and nightlife. This is a fun place to spend a night or two, as it's filled with youthful energy, though guests here are by no means limited to the young. Travelers of all ages find this a pleasant place to stay, as it has a variety of room types,... more
It's a very nice hostel in a very nice location.
But badly there weren't many people around.
Badly, when you want to charge your devices, you also have to turn the light on (at least in the b dorm), what is quite annoying, especially for overnight.
This hostel is not suitable for big and heavy suitcases, because there's no elevator, but when you're with a backpack/ smaller suitcase it works...

Seems like a nice hostel, but they did not deliver on my special request to have a framed picture of Bill Murray next to my bed.
If they can't help with such a simple request, do you think they'll help with more important requests?
Staff were welcoming. Guests were friendly. Communal area was a good place to meet people from around the world.

Could be a cleaner.
The friendly and very helpful staff. The clean well organized house situated town down a few minutes from waterfront.
Localização estratégica; relação custo benefício.

Uso de espaços coletivos (cozinha).
The Location is great. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. It
was what I expect from a Hostel accommodation. Great value for the
price.The kitchen was very clean.
\n\n
The bathrooms could have been cleaner and the sheets were threadbare as
were the towels.
Great kitchen lounge area for guests.
Friendly staff
One of the nicest hostels I have stayed in.
\n\n
Rooms not air conditioned or well ventilated for a particularly warm night but I realise this was very unusual weather.
Freundliches personal
\n\n
Everywhere is clearn and there is near bus station, grocery store and its in old city. Parsonaly I like taking rest in dining there!!
Sehr preisgünstig. Freundliches Personal.
\n\n
Nice rooms, friendly staff. In the middle of Nanaimo.
\n\n
It can be quite loud outside the hostel at night, because of its location in the neighbourhood of bars. Ear plugs will do!

Good downtown location; good value for money; friendly staff; nice bed
\n\n
bathroom not always clean; walls dirty in room; website didn't talk about accessibility for strollers - at least not that I saw.
Location and staff were great

Price, way too expensive and shared bathroom for a private room
I liked that I could sit up in my lower bunk w/o hitting the upper bunk framework or having to duck low to get out & up. The proximity to the water & the downtown core was excellent, the staff very friendly & approachable. Great place...

The stairs, with older knees not too welcoming.
Everything is very clean and there is plenty of bathrooms to accomodate
everyone. The staff was very friendly and helpful. You can buy a
wristband for 2$ that gives you good discounts at many
restaurants/pub/museum around. Definilty worth it.

Living and dining-kitchen room was nice place for relaxing. People staying there were good, keeping their manners.
\n\n
I couldn't find any demerit point.
Great service, even got some mints on my pillow.
\n\n
Pillow was a little hard.
cool building, clean, bright, great common room and kitchen area
\n\n
a bit pricey for just a small room; bathrooms are down the hall and communal
great location, great staff and probably the cleanest hostel i have seen

nothing
Location and staff

Old sheets. Questionable laundry. New sheets are cheap! Buy some!
faciliteiten prima
ruime badkamers

The name and the friendly staff.

Had to walk up three flights of stairs.
Liked the location as it was a block from the waterfront & Port Theatre. And the cost fit my budget perfectly!
\n\n
Climbing the wooden three flights of stairs. But I managed ok. Just h@!%!*n the asthma!
Staff, friendliness, helpful and resourcefull, clean, location, not expensive
\n\n
Nothing!
Very cosy place , easy to feel home with very friendly and helpful staff.
Other guest were friendly.. first lady I spoke with when I checked in was very kind and showed me around the room and where to go and what was available for my stay. Location in Nanaimo was awesome! Close walking distance to interesting stores and ocean harbour.
\n\n
It was loud at night due to the bar.. would not recommed to a family or older couple.
I stayed three nights and booked a private room
pros:
-great location (close to the harbor, cafes, stores...)
-friendly and efficient staff
-nice lounge
-clean
cons:
-thin walls - you can nearly follow other people's conversation in the adjacent rooms. Yeah, sadly, like many hostals this can be a noisy place
- two nights out of 3 there was a party in the vicinity of the hostal, and I couldn't...

This is the best hostel I have ever stayed in!
Sure it's not a hotel, but that's to be expected. I've only ever stayed in the family rooms, so I can't speak to what it's like to be in a single/shared room.
Everything is new. It's right in downtown. The kitchen/living/common room is really a very nice & open room.
Found PT online. Read some great reviews. It was very well located for my needs. Wasn't disappointed. Staff were very friendly & helpful. I'll definately be coming back, as my kids live on the island. Tris
We have been to this Guest house for two nights in September 2011.
We were really satisfied with the location and the rooms except the fact that we had some hairs in our bed.
But we think that this was an exception because the whole building was very clean and we felt very comfortable staying here.
Especially the kitchen/ common room was very homely (the pictures totally show it).
The staff...

Everything in the hostel seems either new or renovated. The bedding is clean and consistent (no odd blankets like in other hostels). The policies are unrestrictive (no lockouts or curfews like in other hostels). The staff is genuinely friendly and helpful.
I wish most North American hostels were up to this level.
It is a hostel and not a hotel. If you are a single traveler trying to save money, it is cheap, clean and centrally located. If you are a family looking for a private room, stay in a hotel. The rooms are right next to a busline with the only way to cool the place by opening the window. Our room was right next to a very bright street light. One of our worst nights of sleep ever. I'd give it one... more
We found the Painted Turtle on the Internet and booked a single night for Friday, August 7th. All staff were very personable and helpful. Tracey, Sebastian, and the young woman that help with the laundry (sorry, we do not have her name) were all very gracious; so much so we were pleased to return for a second visit on August 12th. -- Kitty Cecil-Hunter, Newark, CA, USA ;+)
Located in Nanaimo's Arts district - there is a nice vibe in the neighborhood. It has a great location near the Harbour and it's not far from the Old Quarter - making it a great base. We did city walks and island tours from here as well as several parks that are close to Nanaimo. It has the best of hotel and hostel combined into one. Most rooms are private rooms ($45-75 Canadian) or for a more... more
