You have to order the nigiri at O Shims. Rolls are nothing special but nigiri, especially the amazing chili goma ebi sushi, is as good as any in Canada.
Unfresh raw food, how does that sound. Not just once, but twice, and that is my last time. I am afraid third time i might catch something. Not a busy place for a sushi place and I find that should be a good indicator as how fresh the food really is?yes? Sushi chef nevers gives eye contact or smiles, I... more
I have driven by this great little Japanese restaurant and everytime i drive by i say to myself " I've gotta check this place out!" Today my sister asked me to join her for dinner because she got this "Voucher" for $40 she bought for this restauantl. Great let's try it.The restaurant is simple and to my surprise the food was GREAT! Service was AWSOME the waiter was very attentive and pleasant.... more
We tried out this restaurant twice for their specials, both good experience, service was good and the food was great and fresh. definitely will go back.O'Shima are offering two special now, first one is the three rolls for ten bucks, ten kind of rolls to choose from, they are rice outside, eighteen pieces in total. I like their way of making rolls, less rice on the outside and the portion... more
I am a major lover of sushi and though I recognize this is Alberta... the quality of sushi I ate at O Shima a few weeks ago was by far the worst I've ever had in the city. The rolls were flimsy and lacked substance, not to mention the quality of the fish was poor as it was obviously not fresh. I had to repeatedly assure my boyfriend who had never had sashimi before that the salmon normally... more
We are at O Shima at least once a week for lunch. These guys try really hard and we appreciate it. Is it authentic? Not so much. Is the decor appealing? Could be better. Is the food good? Always.
Like all sushi restaurants, O Shima offers both a raw menu and a cooked menu (for those who haven't quite ventured to the realm of uncooked fish). When it comes to sushi, I usually enjoy... more
Definitely would not go back. Food overly price for its small portion size (about half of the size of what other sushi restaurant offered for the same price) and bland taste. Order took a long time, and hot food comes out cold. For some reason they are really frugal on their wasabi and sauces. But what really turns me down is that they would charge you every time you ask for a refill for hot... more
I went to O Shima on a holiday Monday for dinner. I don't know if they expected it to be dead given it was a holiday and didn't have sufficient staff on, but the service was horrendous. When we arrived (with a reservation), there were only 3-4 other tables sitting. Someone rushed over to us and sat us at a tiny table next to the door (despite other tables being available). A little... more
Me and my friends decided to try O Shima's tonight as we walk by it all the time. It's a Saturday night and the restaurant had 3 tables that were occupied. The first thing out of the waitresses mouth was that it was her first day which was fine by us as we were in no hurry. It took about half an hour just to order our food. And another half an hour to get our appetizers. For a main dish my... more
A tad fishy, maybe I have just moved out of my sashimi phase...:( Presented nicely for take home. I am sure it would have been plated nicely. I should have went with the platter. Restaurant is nice & clean. =)Cute little cucumber sliced cup with masago.
Went here with hubby last night... our original intention was to eat at El's Fusion but they were closed and O Shima was another sushi place that was on my wishlist. I'm thinking hmmmm... Saturday night on 17th Ave - I wonder how busy this restaurant will be? We were able to secure a parking spot right in front of the restaurant, and as we walked in, there was only one table with customers.We... more
Been to many sushi restaurants, this place seems overpriced for what it offers. I can see how it can cater to those who live close and dont want to drive far for much better sushi, like to 33rd ave where there's El's, Momoyama and then you could always go to Globefish. Overpriced for what you get. Consider other restaurants is my advice.
I ordered an avocado roll and a spicy tuna roll for lunch one day. They looked very nice, but the rice seemed to be flavoured, the avocado was way over-ripe, and the tuna so mushy it reminded me of puree. Very bad texture for both. Especially the tuna; I couldn't even finish it. I'm not sure if I'd try it again.
We went to lunch in a new great sushi spot call "O shima" on 17th ave SW, it is located on the same side of chianti, ski cellar, next to a internet cyber shop. We tried their $8.95 lunch specials which all servered with miso soup and salad, I tried the 2 roll lunch and my co-worker tried the dynamite roll lunch. Service was friendly and quick, the sushi maki rolls was very tasty, very like... more
I went there just this weekend and tried their Maki Sushi combo with a cali roll, spicy tuna roll, and dyanamite roll, supplemented with tokoyaki and the ocean martini, which was just on a plate, but carried the same idea of mixed fishes and shredded veggies with ponzu sauce. The combo was not that filling, I needed the help of the tokoyaki and ocean martini to fill in the gaps. Despite this,... more
Great food at a reasonable price! Staff is always friendly.
This place should be busier! It's awesome! They have great sushi! For me it's the rice, and these guys get it done. Price is probably middle of the road but great sushi for the price
Best Sushi we have ever had!! The skill of the sushi Chef is amazingly good, probably the best sushi chef in town. we tried some of the chef's special roll on Friday, presentation is very nice, the rolls are very creative and delicious, especially The mango roll, large portion of salmon wrap on the rice outside roll with cucumber, avocado and tobiko inside, mango, red and green tobiko with... more
I love this place! Prices are great and the quality is outstanding. There is plenty of parking in the back (and easy access with a back entrance). O Shima is not a very big place but it delivers in a big way.The mango roll is spectacular; the traditional rolls, maki, and nigiri offerings are spot on. The rice is perfect. They even have a couple of soba noodle dishes which is rare for Calgary;... more
We have a very good lunch at O Shima. Their new $10.95 lunch bento tray has miso soup, salad, rice, 2 pieces of goyza, plus two main items you pick, there are 12 main items. I chose california roll(6p rice outside roll) and lemon chicken katsu. after finish my miso soup the bento tray shows up. WOW! the juicy goyza was very nice, it is different than other place I have before, it was hand make... more
I went to O Shima for lunch today with a colleaque, and was surprised to find the restaurant empty. We obviously had no trouble getting a seat, and were further surprised by the quality and friendly service. Samurai and Fire Dragon rolls were excellent, and fish in Saba and Tai Nigiri was fresh, well-portioned and flavourful. The strong flavour of the Saba was offset nicely by the subtlety of... more
I love this place! The fish is fresh with a great fish-to-rice ratio with maki; the nigiri sushi is made with great care and in particular the tuna is amazing, melting, perfect. Great lunch specials including a lovely stick-to-your-ribs Japanese curry rice.
