We recently attended the National Ballet of Canada presentation of Romeo and Juliet at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. We were very impressed by the quality of the dancing, the acting, the scenery and the overall performance.
Bravo
Our hotel was a block from the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts so we walked there to see the National Ballet of Canada perform "Cinderella." It was a lovely production with nice sets and the performers were excellent, especially the two wicked step-sisters and the prince. The lead was played by Xiao Nan Yu, not the featured star,... more
I'm not the biggest fan of the opera, but sometimes it's nice to exercise the more sophisticated side of your brain. Full disclosure here, a friend of ours is in the orchestra for the National Ballet, so I'm a bit biased. Never got "freebie" tickets though, so there's no incentive or obligation to provide positive feedback. So now you know... more
If you like ballet, the National Ballet of Canada offers some of the finest ballet on the planet! The venue of The Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts is elegant and every seat has a fabulous view.
The performance of the Nutcracker by the National Ballet of Canada was absolutely amazing. It was the first time I have been to a live ballet performance and it was truly worth every penny! I highly recommend for any one to go see it. The Four Seasons Centre where the performance is held was very easy to get to and... more
First time to see ballet and chose the Nutcracker at the Four Seasons centre. We bought rush tickets at the box office on the day of the performance. Good seats at the 2nd last row of the orchestra for $35 with unobstructed view. (normally rush tickets get a seat at the side of the theatre with only partial view of... more
This is our first time to watch the Nutcracker on live in the Theatre. The Ballet Show was totally Great and Amazing!!! :)
The story line was lovely and entertaining. All Performers were dancing like Birds or little Angels on the stage and their costumes were Beautiful and eye-catching!!! I could easily feel the 'Magic of Christmas joys' inside the...

Went to an evening performance of the Nutcracker Ballet with my daughters, my sister and her daughter. I had never been to the ballet before and was completely impressed. The 4 Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts is so easy to get to. We took the Go Train and subway. From the subway you don't even have to go outside... more
The Nutcracker at the 4 seasons. I'm an art director myself and was surprised to see talent and costumes yet no substance and visual storyline that corresponded with the music. Kids were laughing at the lambs, sheep, fox, bear.......not in the original story line. The theatre is crowded and anybody that suffers vertigo should be warmed to be careful because... more
The National Ballet's performance of the Nutcracker should be boycotted. I agree with the other reviewer who pointed out that at $600 for a family of four, expectations are high. The audience should demand better. The performance we saw last year was rushed and over very, very fast. When it ended, everyone around us was incredulous! Karen Kain's version is... more
Somehow it seems that the show that returns every year that my friends want to see is the Nutcracker. I must admit that the new money invested for the set and costumes is impressive. But it is the same show giving the young and new dancers a chance at performing on the stage. Beautiful and graceful as always. Well worth... more
If you're visiting Toronto, don't invest precious time and money attending this peculiar production. Performed by a live orchestra, Bizet's music is magnificent. Unfortunately, the inclusion of taped Innuit throat singing in the score is both disruptive and incongruent. Further, no amount of sexy costumes or psychidelic video backdrops can offset wooden choreography and poor styling choices.... more
I watched Carmen on 6th June and was disappointed. Not that the production did not have strong moments. Other than the silly scene of men in drag and the character of Escamillo presented as an effeminate bull, the second half was much better, because it was more concise in furthering the action. My main disappointment was due to the production... more
Passion, Sex, Desire and Transgression are the tropes of Bizets Carmen. The dress rehearsal of National Ballet of Canada "interpretation " might be improved by some undressing, though nude and passionless would be particularity painful in the bizarre scene where male dancers appear crossdressed and suddenly mouthing psudo opratic song. This following the "tension filled" (though, in fact,... more
The shows are top notch. Prices are very decent for what you get..I mean the ballet performers have gone through so much training to show you a perfect show..BRAVO!!
Attended with my wife and daughter. Ballet is not something I would go to all the time but this experience was beautiful and thoroughly enjoyable. Would attend again.
When you pay over $600 for a family of four to attend a matinee of the Nutcracker you would expect a high quality performance. Not us, we saw ballet students instead of professional ballet dancers prancing around in what I thought was a very unprofessional performance where the lead male dancer dropped the lead female ballet dancer on the stage... more
If you love ballet then you can't miss seeing the National Ballet of Canada. Especially around Christmas time you have to go and see the Nutcracker! If you don't love the ballet, go anyway!
We saw the Nutcracker over the holidays and truly enjoyed the performance. We knew someone that was performing in the show, although a very small bit it was worth seeing her and the rest of the cast perform.
Excellent reputation of classics and modern interpretations of classics.
Also innovative new productions
It is a wonderful ballet, second only to Russia's ballet in Moscow and St. Petersburg. We watched the Nutcracker last fall in the great venue and it was wonderful. The theatre, the Four Seasons, was a wonderful place to have it. Probably nicer than Russia.
The National Ballet is a great cultural institution. It is old school ballet, like American Ballet Theater, the Royal, and the Bolshoi, though like at least the first two of these it also does "modern" pieces. The quality is very high, and some of the productions rank among the best in the world.
I subscribe to the national ballet and have seen three of their productions!! Each have been wonderful but I especially loved Giselle!! beautiful dancing, wonderful costumes and scenery!! Loved every minute of if!! Can't wait for the next production which is romeo and juliet! i would recommend this to everyone!!
This world class ballet is always wonderful to watch. The repertoire varies from very modern to classical. The corps is as wonderful as the many talented solo artists. Costumes and sets creative and beautiful. The venue/ building is a wonderful place to enjoy the ballet.
I love the National Ballet of Canada. I attend at least four performances a year, and try to squeeze in the Nutcracker as a bonus every second Christmas or so as I love the Russian theme and the brilliantly rich colour palette of the production. The NBS performs at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, an incredible glass... more
The National Ballet of Canada is amazing! I love their shows. The dancers are wonderful, and the orchestra is equally wonderful. I feel that they really tell the audience a story through the expression of dance. It's amazing to be witness to this kind of creativity.
The Ballet is always wonderful here and it has became a ritual for our family to go every year. We love watching all the shows and love the Nutcracker at Christmas!
A lovely ballet. However Angele B. cannot complain about not being let in when they're late. Her tardiness should not reflect in the low score in the rating she gave.
Loved this production so much - my 2 year old was glued to her seat for the entire production. Loved it so much we are carrying on the tradition and heading back again this year! Anyone with children should do this particular production at least once. The memories will last a lifetime.
Always brilliant choreography. Jaw-dropping costumes and interesting vignettes keep even my ballet-hating husband coming to see more
Great job!
I was a season subscriber...the program was excellent and the dancers superb. Parking and restaurants are nearby, the venue is ideal for ballet and the peripheral services are very good. Outstanding entertainment by amazing athletes.
What can one say of the ballet? Talent, grace, beauty and enchantment that takes your breath away! A MUST SEE at least one a year... more
Chroma is beautiful. From the simply graphic clean set, the softness of the costumes to the dramatic lighting these dancers stand out - astounding choreography of movements not typical in ballet. I love Elena!
THE NEOPHYTE'S ARTS REVIEW:
THE NATIONAL BALLET OF CANADA
Went to see three Ballets from the National Ballet of Canada last evening; Elite Syncopations, Song of a Wayfarer and Chroma. Up front I acknowledge two things: the performance was a final dress rehearsal; I am not an experienced ballet fan.
Elite Syncopations was brilliantly fun, but difficult to take it...

Ugly music, sets and undistinguished costumes, a weak narrative line oblivious of the famous play, this production is only redeemed by energetic dancing. Not a jewel in the crown of this noble company. Disappointing.
If the ballet is performing in town, by all means secure tickets. They usually sell out so buy them early.
So much fun! The venue is absolutely stunning and almost worth it by itself. The vibe when you walk in is fantastic - people still getting dressed up to go to the ballet and staff everywhere to make your night feel really special. One great feature of this venue is that you aren't banished to some corner stairwell or long... more
Both the facility and the productions are amazing. I am proud of Toronto for offering this quality of production!
Im not a ballet expert but the company produces a good Nutcracker production at Christmas in a smart modern acoustically fine theatre.
We got tickets to a ballet and arrived late. The staff refused to let us into the show and pointed to a small tv for us to watch more then half the show from. I was standing in the hall in tears and everyone I came in contact with was very rude or just clueless when I explained what I... more
Love the productions and the orchestral accompaniments!
Head of Canadian Ballet, this place is where Canada's best ballet performers learn their trade, very highly respected organization.
You will not be dissappointed! The new building alone is worth the visit, and the performances are exquisite!
We went to see Romeo & Juliet...the orchestra played beautifully...the costumes were colourful and the dance was magical. The thatre was full so book early and enjoy.
National Ballet Of Canada offers these services: art, culture.
Founded in 1951 by British dancer Celia Franca, this ballet troupe is one of the world's greatest with more than 45 dancers and its own full symphony orchestra. The National Ballet of Canada is the only Canadian company to offer a range of traditional, full-length classics, while at the same time encouraging the creation of new works by Canadian choreographers. The ballet performs at The Four... more
