very much enjoyed the food and the beer flight was terrific.
fish and chips very good
Salad with pear and cheese delicious
one of our favourites in St Catherines !
Would definately return.
Lovely, casual atmosphere, good beer brewed on premises, but the food and friendly staff was the real reason why we returned the next day.
The Merchant is a wonderful pub worth visiting if you're in Niagara. Their craft beer is enjoyable and their food is incredibly delicious. The atmosphere is wonderful and very British. It's a great throwback to the history of the region and certainly stands out in its quality.
Merchant ale house is doing it rite! Brewing most of there own beer as well as featuring small crafts brews you can't find a better place for a pint anywhere in Niagara. It's always busy crawling with a great local music scene, everything from folk to blues to rock. If the bands or the brew doesn't do it for you... more
After a day traveling to Niagara, and a circuit around wine country, we were ready for something really comfortable, and THIS WAS IT! Great neighborhood pub with terrific beers, great food, and the one thing you can't bottle or prepare in the kitchen, atmosphere! Felt sort of Cheers meets St. Elmo's Fire. Beers we tried, Oatmeal Stout was that something... more
we have fun enjoying sampling the beer and eating GREAT food. our daughter was 18 and the drinking age is 19. but we all shared good laughs the service was great and it was a way to cap off a long travel day and visit to the falls. worth it. print out directions if coming from the states in case... more
Best fish sandwich I've ever had...did something with the onions and slaw....Yowza! LOL The fries are thin and like candy. Very good. Limited pub menu but we will go back for sure.
I went to Merchant Ale house for lunch on business the other day. It was a very great meal with a good menu. It was my first time to eat there so I had the perception it would have regular pub food. It is a great looking place instead with the true pub feel and I enjoy the brewing tanks.... more
We recently took a family trip to Niagara Falls and wanted to explore the region a bit and stopped here for lunch. The food was excellent, portions were huge, and the beer sampler was outstanding. I wish I could've taken a growler to go, but they only have onsite consumption. The staff were very friendly and welcoming to my wife... more
We live locally and are usually in at least once a week. The food is unique and delicious, the blueberry lager is what made me realize I even liked beer at all, and the service is always excellent. It's our favourite place to spend any holiday, occasion or just an evening after work. I don't even bother recommending other restaurants... more
You can't go wrong with a beer here and the food is great! It's a great place to meet friends for a drink and a meal (lunch, dinner or late night snack) any day of the week. My go-to meal is the quesadilla plate, but the wings and fish and chips are also great. I haven't had anything I didn't... more
The Merchant Ale House is hands down my favourite restaurant. The house brews are amazing and they have something for everyone. From great mild ales like the Blueberry Wheat to hoppier offerings like the ESB and IPA. The food is put together with care and I always look forward to trying a new soup and wrap special. I've had almost... more
Great beer, excellent friendly staff and good food. What more does any one need!
Love the place and friends and I love going regularly.
Beer is excellent, as is the food. Have to say steak and pint on Thursday's is my favorite, would definitely recommend this place to anyone!!! CHEERS!!!!
This place is, hands down, the capital reason to visit downtown St Catharines. The beer is phenomenal and the menu works miracles that are somehow also everything that pub fare should be. Try the board. Try the burger. Try the fish, and the steak. You won't be disappointed in the least.
Went as a family of 5 for lunch. Loved it. Best restaurant mac n cheese & a shockingly crisp, perfect side salad. So nice to see that care and attention to detail in an equally fun and relaxed environment. Delicious dark beer. Recommend this spot to everyone I know.
There were six of us and, for the most part, we greatly enjoyed the meal, the beer and the atmosphere. However, one of us with hearing aids was effectively unable to communicate and the rest of us had to greatly raise our voices. I think it likely a result of the room's design, but whatever the cause, this is a... more
all I can say is, the beer is always good and there's lots to choose from. the food is usually pretty god too.
If you have money and are even considering going to another restaurant, you're doing it wrong
This bar has hands down the best food (every single item on the menu) and has the best beer to pair with it.
I make sure I eat here at least once a week and invite my friends every time. You should too.
I recently went to the Merch with a few friends after my final exam. It was entirely what I needed that night, and actually most nights.
We ordered the avocado egg rolls which are perhaps one of my most favourite things EVER, and we both had the friend perch sandwich, which is loaded with flavours and makes my mouth water...

Fabulous pub feel! Food was fresh and delicious. Staff was friendly! We had the fish and chips ...the best I've ever had! My husband had the burger and loved it! I'd recommend this spot to anyone that wants a fresh and delicious meal and a cold beer! We'll be back for sure!! Loved it!
The Merch has been a downtown destination for 15 years and I'm sure it will be for many more to come. The food, the staff and of course the beer are the best you can get in"The Garden City"....The Wheel.
finally made it for steak night. i wish they served steak more than one day a aweek, because for 16 dollars a pint of you favourite craft beer, a new york strip and a side is a great bargain. i always take people to this place if they are from out of town! great for a meal or drinks at... more
The #1 place for home brew beer downtown St.Catharines. I get the apricot or strawberry ale every time if it hasn't run out! Friendly service, usually busy, and always worth the money for fresh, cold, tasty beer & saucy wings. Dammit now I have a craving.
This is as close as we come to having a "local", as we like to share the wealth as the saying goes, since we like to tour around to different pubs in the area.
But the Ale House is probably our Go To place in St Catharines. The craft beer, made on site, is well brewed, and well priced, with...

This is a great pub. The food is good quality. The fish and chips always please but I recommend the perch sandwich or the fish tacos. All the beer produced here is good. My fall back is the Old Time Hockey Ale but the Drunken Monkey Oatmeal Stout is tasty too. I look forward to the seasonal brews. In the... more
There is nothing on the menu that isn't absolutely delicious!! Incredible wait staff, chef, and cooks. Top notch beer & ciders. You can't beat the vibes and atmosphere at the Merchant Ale, every time we're greeted with a smile and new craft beer samples to try out. The menu is perfect, not filled with endless options but a smaller curated... more
I absolutely love the Extra Special Bitter (beer)... Old Tyme Hockey Amber Ale and the Blueberry Wheat are alo great! The homemade Merchant Sausage is FANTASTIC! Service is very friendly but can sometimes forget about you if it gets busy. Overall a great experience (3 visits now!)
The servers here are very attentive to your needs. They serve top notch craft type beer made on the premises. The food is terrific and I suggest the shepherds pie it's better than my own. The prices are realistic and a very good value.
We will keep being repeat customers
We like coming here, and appreciate the warm atmosphere, the friendly and attentive staff, and the great food. The wraps, burgers and salads are all very good.
the only caution is watch out when you ask for extras (extra condiments etc) as they charge you for every time they have to go back to the kitchen--so watch out that you...

It is the smile and bags of barley that greet you. An open space with two enormous shiny vats and a dart board mark the ale house's foot print. You must choose from an impressive list of beers; all delicious and mostly made in-house. The menu is less expansive but tasty. I visited twice and was impressed with the spicing... more
Stopped in on a whim for late afternoon drinks and food and was not disappointed! Standard pub fare awaits with a few twists: got the arugula salad: what a dressing! Homemade! There isn't a whole lot of seating, as their casks take up about a 1/3 of the bar, but it is also on bar row for college/university students. An... more
There is nothing I have had here that doesn't taste good (seriously)! Their in-house ales are amazing and their food is just as awesome. They have your normal pub fare with a few twists and they just can't go wrong. If you are there when pumpkin ale is in season I strongly recommend to try. This is a bar scene... more
We lucked out when we found this little gem!! My daughters and I are all vegans so we are always on the lookout for vegan friendly restaurants. This place is amazing!! Yes it has flavor and character and it totally is the place that you should go to with your family or friends. We had the vegan chicken sandwiches and... more
Stopped in for a quick bite, server seemed "hing over" but I am sure is better at other times, very friendly and entertaining but told me could not look at food cause of party the night before. LOLOLOL been there. Overall good place. Cheers.
every thing is wonderful with the different in of the location f r bathroom yikks that posed a large problem since I have issues with my back. it would be a lovely place if in the future they could have a bathroom n the main floor
Great beer and atmosphere but the food was pretty bad. Started with the soup of the day which was actually really great. However our mains were not, the burger was overcooked and very bland, it tasted frozen. The chicken club was also very bland and boring.
Best beer and pub food around. Great service and so accommodating and fast! We go here at least once a month. One of the best places in Niagara
My family and I had the pleasure of dining at this quaint bar/restaurant! We enjoyed the atmosphere and the food was fabulous. I had the fish and chips and have to say that it was the best I've had in a very long time. Crispy fish, fresh cut fries and crispy coleslaw!! My boys had the burger and thoroughly enjoyed... more
It's been a couple of months, but had no complaints about this place, had a nice blond beer and a burger, beer was excellent, burger was better than average
Had lunch there earlier this week and was blown away. The pea soup with smoked ham was one of the best soups I have ever had and the sausage (main course) was outstanding. A must try!
Let me start by saying that their beer is fantastic! I love going for a local brew and to see what seasonal beer they might have on tap. The food on the other hand was appauling! I ordered a hamburger. It came with two paper thin patties that seemed freezer burned. The bottom bun was so soaked in hamburger fat... more
Fabulous pub food, wonderful beer selection and great atmosphere! If you're needed some pub-grub, this place is GREAT!
we've been here several times and i always get the fish & chips, they are great. Also try the strawberry blonde beer when it is on tap

only been there one time but it was a great experience. friendly staff, vegetarian/vegan options :) great beer and good food. they were sold out of alot of stuff.
One of the better bars in the city. Make sure to grab a beer with your meal. They have a bounty of choices - nome of which will let you down.
Went for drinks and had a good time. Ground-floor is the perfect size for a pub, with great big windows onto St. Paul Street. The live band was good but it was a little loud for the small place. Accoustic might be better--it was almost a relief when they took a break. Haven't tried the food but heard it's good.
For years the Merchant Ale House has been my favourite restaurant and place to go for beers in the Niagara Region. Always a great place to meet up with friends and the menu and selection of beer is by far the best in the area. Located downtown St. Catharines, I always come in for a pint of Hockey Ale or a seasonal pint of Pumpkin Ale. Always a great crowd and one of the most down to earth pubs... more
I love going to The Merchant Ale House. I know that when I order food the taste and presentation is going to be the same no matter who is working in the kitchen. I know that when I order a beer it will be just as delicious as it was the last time! The Merch offers a wide selection of beers made in house. There also seems to always be a seasonal beer on tap. One of my favourites is the Pumpkin... more
Tuesdays are my favourite days to visit the Merchant. You can't go wrong with the price, and the food is awesome! The beer is pretty good too. Definitely not your 'regular' beer place, which is what makes it more desirable to us.
We love this place, the food and the beer. Blonde Bombshell and Old Time Hockey Ale are our favourites. The servers are super nice and the food is good and reasonably priced. Their club is delicious and so is their sherpards pie. Wings are pretty good too. Great atmosphere, especially int esummer when they open up the big windows.
The food is pretty bad. But, the beer is pretty good. The first time I ate there, I had some kind of fish sandwich. Not good. So, the second time I ordered a chicken caesar salad. Pretty hard to screw up I thought. Nope, yuk. Dry over-cooked chicken and over-saucy wilted lettuce. But the beer is decent and the atmosphere is just right. Great place to go with friends; I'll just try no to go when... more
Best place to go for freshly made beer without preservatives.
