Great restaurant after spending a long day touring Montréal for the first time. We had oysters which were delicious and only $1 at happy hour! Their Rouge Sangria is killer so I had two! Great find upon arriving to old Montreal. The brisket poutine was phenomenal. The entrees we selected were great (lobster gnocchi, cacatelli, and the Méchant burger). Whole chunks of lobster in the gnocchi. To top it off, the drinks were spectacular. Definitely recommend!

Stick to the beef

To be fair, we ordered calamari, spinach dip and pasta. In hindsight we should have ordered something beef related. Pasta was huge and alright; spinach dip tasted curdled; calamari were not crispy, but had a good dip. The restaurant was nice and the service was good. The above meal with 2 dirty martinis came to $75 with tax.

Expensive and loud

The maitre d was exceptional by providing our party the best table in the house - next to the windows. Food and ambiance was great although wine is way too expensive and noise level EXTREME to the level to be uncomfortable. Why the need of a DJ is beyond me. We finished off our dinner having coffee at another restaurant.

The chairs have very short legs. Not comfortable with seats too low. Friendly waitress. Young crowd. Ear-deafening music. Not able to have a conversation. Good food and extensive bar offerings. Very friendly and energetic bar keepers. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone under 40 years old. This gal prefers a quieter location. Conversation is an important part of my dining experience.

Mechant Bouef was alright. The decor and vibe in the place was amazing, the live DJ was really good as well. Service was really good, and our appetizer was really tasty (pulled pork poutine). However our main meals were Alright. Nothin special with not a ton of flavor. Maybe we caught them on an off night, not sure, but I'd go back and give them another try.

Extremely loud, had a DJ and a woman playing the violin. 2 large groups next to us had to yell to hear each other which further increased the noise level to a bar atmosphere. Octopus salad was almost completely onions and the mechant burger was extremely dry.

The Internet, Guidebooks, and the concierge all billed this as one of Montreal's great happy hour spots with a great Mixologist, half pice drink specials and a happy hour crowd. Group of 12 out for dinner on Grand Prix weekend. The food was excellent but the only turnoff was that the waiter kept opening bottles of wine without my consent and this led to our final bill being astronomical!

Had the sirloin - cooked as ordered, puréed potatoes were like velvet and super tasty! Service was fun and friendly. My friend had the 14 OZ ribs - plentiful, meaty and tasty. Will do a repeat. But if you're looking for a quiet dining experience - this isn't the place. Loud and fun.

This place is wonderful. Whether you're looking for the full dining experience, or just want to grab some tasty cocktails, this is a great place to go! For a place that is to specialize in beef I was underwhelmed. I had the sirloin which was not great quality however the flavor was good. It came with mixed veggies and mashed potatoes. We went to this restaurant with our kids at the beginning of the evening (5h00). We were alone in the restaurant. The service was good, although they forgot to bring us our oysters. This is a very lively, very friendly place. We enjoyed the raw bar and talked some hockey with the chef. We had only drinks (including the excellent local Gaspar) and oysters and so cannot comment on other food offerings. Overall, a cheerful place to be on a cold Montreal night.

Sunday Dinner

A great dinner featuring the 20 oz Rib Steak. Cooked to order! Wine selection was good. A party of 24 made the dining a bit loud.
I would skip the raw oyster bar.......as iwe had many "returns" over the next several days

Raw beef heaven

We ate here twice, first time I had Tartar trio : Salmon, bison & beef, served with crudités & homemade croutons which was delicious and the second time was CALMARS FRITS with FILET MIGNON...yum.
Great cocktails and staff too.
Open late and you can eat until the early hours too, recommend!!

Go for the ambiance...not necessarily for the food

The place is very nice, warm, very old montreal with a jazzy feeling. Service is impeccable. The menu is limited so be prepared to have limited options. The wine list is affordable and varied.

Very average food. Although we were the only table there, our service was bad and the food cold. There are lots of other places to eat in the area so i recommend you pick something else.

We visited this restaurant since it was part of the Merry Montreal/Montréal en fêtes holiday festival and the reviews on this site consistently were good. All the food was exceptional. Not especially pricey for the quality of the food... Great place to start your night

The Music, the vibe, the atmosphere was buzzing! I am not sure if all the Montys are friendly and nice people. Every single staff was smiling and having a good time with their guests. Great find

We were lucky to come across this restaurant the first night we got to Montreal. The food and service was fantastic. Mechant Boeuf has a friendly vibe and great atmosphere. We really enjoyed the band that played that night as well. Veggies-don't let the name fool you! The veggie burger was delicious.

Went on Friday night. Great atmosphere and vibe. Guests in our party had the oysters, crab cakes and seared foie gras as appetizers. Dinners included hangar steak and a burger. If you are in the mood for steak, this is a good place to go, though they also pride themselves on their oyster bar. The tables are very close together, so the atmosphere is not very romantic. Great old port tartar

Not so many places in Montreal offer good service while cooking great tartar. Mechant Boeuf is one of them, especially considering amazing location it also a huge plus. I love its tartars and huge tasty juicy burgers. The interior design is very beautiful also. All at all enjoyable atmosphere.

Fun young bar

My boyfriend and I ended up here when we stayed at the Nelligan for our anniversary. We were given free drink coupons by the hotel, when we went to use them we found out that the hotel bar closed rather early (sometime around 10:30). Best carpaccio I've ever had. More than that, this is a fun place. It was obvious that this is a locals place--we were there on a Wednesday night and it was crowded fairly late. Must have been a bad day

I had heard such good things about this place. Best burger, etc etc. I wanted to like it. That's what makes this so disappointing. The atmosphere and live music were top notch - warm and lively. We walked in and had great feelings about the place. That's where the greatness stopped.

Good for drinks

Really enjoyed the ambiance and feeling of this location (having a live DJ on hand didn't hurt). The food wasn't exceptional - but it wasn't terrible either. Cocktails, on the other hand, were fantastic!
