We ate breakfast at this cute little dinner, and we were so glad we did! It is outside of the downtown area, but not too far. Food was very fresh, cooked perfectly, and priced well. My husband exclaimed that the honey garlic sausage we shared was the best he'd ever had, and I would agree! Eggs Benedict and asparagus/Swiss cheese... more
Saw an add in a book from tourist office, was disappointed the service was TERRIBLE....they said oh it's not usually this busy Tuesdays...some people got up and left when no one had given them menus after fifteen minutes...I had hot turkey..gravy was terrible, hubbie had fish that was good, the butter tart was good he said I couldn't tell you... more
It's an old diner, really packed breakfast was decent though the hollandaise sauce wasn't that great on my eggs Benedict. But one thing that makes me keep coming back for more is their Pecan Butter Tarts. The moment I had a bite of it I got totally hooked. I even go there just to buy the pecan butter tarts. A... more
I am definitely considered regular at Madelyn's. My partner and I always go in around once or twice a week. I always get the Fish and chips (sometimes I get mash and gravy). Its just too good to pass up. The batter its very light and crisp. The fish really gets to speak for itself. The fries are crisp, fluffy... more
Excellent breakfast, including choices such as peameal and eggs Benedict. They also serve sandwiches, fish & chips, homemade soup, homemade coleslaw, etc. They have a large parking lot of their own, so, unlike most restaurants in downtown Stafford, parking is easy. We eat there at least once every trip to Stratford.
Four of us had lunch at Madelyn's May 27. Great service, loved the unsweet iced tea. 2 of us had brekkies and 2 lunch and all of us were pleased with the food. Delicious, quick, lots of it. The salad was enormous and shared with all 4. Its welcoming with a homelike atmosphere, a happy place to go. Many thanks... more
It's been years since I've eaten here and I remember it as being quite good. Not this time though. The fries were soggy, the fish greasy and the service was terrible. The atmosphere is grungy and I don't think it's the cleanest either. At least I didn't spend a fortune to get bad food. I will not return.
Came for lunch with my wife. She's had pecan salad and I had the fish on a bun special that included tomato vegetable soup. The soup was excellent. The fish on a bun was tasty. My wife's salad was no very fresh. Lots of wilted greens. Finished the meal with a yummy tart and coffee.
Saw a sign said voted best fish n chips. Our order was taken and served very quickly. Service was excellent. Fish was cooked perfectly. My chips were not so good. Improper blanching of the fries left them firm in the middle and soggy on the outside. One of the problems with fresh cut fries.
My husband & I always go to Madeline's when we visit Stratford! The food is fresh, home-made, & the fish & chips are the best we have found yet. The fish is flown in daily from the East coast, then deep fried in a light crispy batter, which keeps the fish moist & tender. The other menu items are also... more
Had driven by this diner a couple of times, thought it looked cute and had heard good things. Visited today with my wife and two year old daughter. When my wife asked what kind of cheese came with the kid's grilled cheese, the female server snapped back that they could put any cheese on it. Sort of stunned at the... more
I commend Madelyn's for getting most of their products from local suppliers. But after saying that, if you look at their menu you will find that except for the salads and desserts, most of the main menu items are grilled or deep fried.

I had ordered one of their famous burgers. It was quite substantial in size,...

My boyfriend and I love Butter Tarts and have had our share from different places, these are hands down the best! We actually make trips from Woodstock to Stratford just to get them. Love that they offer different flavours, even bacon, and their pastry is to die for....they don't cheap out on the filling either (pecans, bacon, ect.)
Had breakfast...

This old school diner wanna be has THE best homemade butter tarts. That is their claim to fame. Take a dozen to go. They do serve breakfast all day & basics - soup & salad r standard. Must say the dairy milkshake was excellent..with the old fashioned silver mixer cup & tall milkshake glass. The Benny - eggs benedict was... more
Soup was homemade tossed salad very good i forgot to ask for whole wheat bun for burger service was excellent old fashion service
I've been here a handful of times for both breakfast and lunch. The food is good, as other people have said the butter tarts are magnificent. When it is busy the service tends to drop. I appreciate a server who approaches the table with a smile but I did not experience this at Madelyn's. I was never asked if I... more
We asked our B and B hosts in Stratford for a good recommendation for a ' local' type experience and they recommended Madelyn's.
Great steak and the homemade butter tarts for desert were to die for ,
Atmosphere from 1960 ish diner type, but food and staff were first class. Owner on hand who explained how the butter tarts were...

We came here with a friend who lives in town and comes often. Don't let the appearance fool you. It was a good breakfast. Eggs cooked perfectly, 4 pieces of pemeal bacon. French toast came with 4 pieces. Kept coffee cups filled. Rye toast on option. The hash browns, in my opinion were okay, and maybe could have been a... more
Great little local diner with very good fish and chips, tarts and home baked pies...coconut cream being my favorite. Have been there many times when visiting family in the area and although often very busy, the service is friendly and the food consistent. Frequented by many locals. Prices are very reasonable. I have been known to buy whole pies from... more
A friend and I went to this restaurant (Madelyn's Diner Stratford, Ontario) for the very first time this morning for breakfast and were very disappointed. My friend had ordered the steak and eggs, and asked for his steak to be blue. After a very long wait, the waitress brought our food to the table, and the steak was more than... more
Best Butter Tarts in the WORLD. I am a huge fan of the Tart and these offer many different flavours like coconut and pecan, both were incredible. The food was just average, cold fries with a good greek omelette. Too bad the meal wasn't as good as the Tarts.
We chose this restaurant because we had heard they had good fish and chips and good pie. Admittedly, no one in our party had the fish and chips, but we expected the other choices would be tasty. Sadly, nothing really lived up to that expectation. The salad greens were obviously old, similarly, the vegetables that came with the meals. The... more
This is a local diner with homemade food and local sources. Husband had schnitizel and kraut. It was pounded thin, tender, breaded and huge. Came with soup or salad, potates and vegetables. Tomato vegetable soup was very good. I had a burger - local beef. Very good with fries and colesalaw. There are six kinds of buttertarts - including bacon.... more
We stopped for breakfast at Madelyn's on the advice of a friend who lives in Stratford. I'm glad we did.
The diner itself is pretty no frills with older furnishings and decoration but the food was great. We all had big breakfasts that we thoroughly enjoyed and finished off with their famous buttertarts. I personally hate raisins in buttertarts and...

Madelyn's is a diner in the true sense of the word. Not fancy but great food. We were in Stratford last week and usually splurge and go out for a big breakfast once while we are there. We happened upon Madelyn's early in the week and went back twice more because the breakfasts were so good. Everything is homemade and... more
The food was excellent. I recommend the fries. The service was excellent. The atmosphere was fantastic. Overall it was a truly wonderful place to eat
Order the fish and chips. Simply delicious!!! Wait staff very friendly and happy to assist with travel directions. The owner, Madelyn, is a treat to talk to and has a delightful sense of humor!
We went to Madelyn's by default/poor planning. We were reluctant to go in as it lacked....curb appeal shall we say. Our hungry bellies got the better of us despite the place looking very dated and a tad grimy. I decided to play it safe and ask what was popular. "The fish n chips n butter tarts". Sold! Fish portion was... more
Madelyns is an old fashioned well worn diner where you can get a fair sandwich at a fair price and a terrific tart.
Madelyn's Diner serves a most excellent breakfast. Generous portions, low prices. Eggs perfectly cooked the way you request it. Bring cash, when I was there, they did not have a credit card machine. The restaurant was easy to find and had good parking.
We had a super breakfast yesterday enjoying a delicious western omelet and eggs benedict. The lady that served us (Brenda) was very friendly and cheerful and our breakfast arrived in short order - hot and fresh.
The best breakfast in town. The people are friendly. the food is good. We eat there several times on every visit.
I like the "Benny" (eggs benedict) and theirs is delicious. Also, like their asparagus and cheese omlet
Went there to catch up with old friends over breakfast. Even though the place was full, for good reason of course, they did not hurry us along. Food was excellent and the service worth returning.
The server was very friendly and I had the peameal with cheese on a bun with fries. The sandwich was good, but it could have been put under the broiler a bit longer to melt the cheese. The fries also could have been cooked a bit more, but the best part of the meal was the butter tart. It was... more
They only offer 1 version, egg on peameal on a toasted muffin, smothered in sauce. Add in a Farmers Sausage, 2 cooked butterfly style that are soooooo tasty. All this for $13 and change.
Great breakfast fries also
The best kept secret of good eats in Stratford. The Hearty Delight #1 or #2 are like two breakfasts for one person. Featuring eggs, bacon/sausage/peameal bacon, home fries, etc. from local farmers and producers. Don't forget to pick up some of Madelyn's home baking, especially the bacon butter tarts.
Madelyn's Diner is by far the best restaurant in Stratford. The food is great, the atmosphere is great, the service is great, Madelyn's Diner is just all around great!
We headed here after reading the reviews and the good reviews were so right. We had lunch which was very well priced and so tasty. I had the hot hamburger for only $7.95 was a steal. It came with real mashed potatoes, I could have had fries, that were fluffy and so good. The hamburger and gravy were also excellent.... more
Great atmosphere, very family-oriented. Superb fish and chips with very reasonable rates. Very friendly and a bit crowded, but that's because it's very popular.
And after you enjoy your eggs, fried potatoes, toast, sausage, coffee, juice, etc. take home a couple of Madelyn's butter tarts. We loved the bacon butter tarts and the pumpkin ones are tasty too!
breakfast use be awesome, past few months quality has deteriorated, eggs not done, toast not toasted just put in and popped out seems to have gone downhill in terms of food quality
Based upon other reviews, we decided to go to Madelyn's for a good old-fashioned breakfast. The staff was great - friendly and very efficient but the food was terrible. My scrambled eggs were tough and flat and the sausage had been deep-fried within an inch of its life. My husband's eggs benedict had sauce from a mix and the home... more
This is the place to go if you want a full tradtoonal breakfast! It is a popular diner for locals as well as travelers. The service is quick, friendly and the food is cooked the way you want it. We had a terrific lunch (both of us were delighted) and great service at this little gem. Very simply prepared and presented but the proof was in the taste-really good and fresh. Not greasy nor fishy at all. Good-sized portions of fish and reasonably priced, with cole slaw, soup and very friendly staff.
Simple but very satisfying if you love...

I live to having a wonderful dining experience at night, but in the morning, I love a good diner. Madelyn's fits the bill perfectly. It's a slice of small town, yester-year, and the staff and clientele are charming.

1/2 mile down Huron street away from town. Non chain. Ask any local and would recommend it. Looks downscale inside and outside, but good home cooking inside.
We have just returned from a few days in Stratford and because of many positive reviews we went for breakfast one morning arriving shorly after they opened. We were greeted cordially but did not seem to be a genuine friendliness. After placing our order, we started looking around. The table legs and chair legs which were chrome did not appear... more
Year in and year out, Madelyn and her team serve up the most robust wonderful breakfast in town. Omelets, pancakes, Oatmeal, everything with her famous crispy home-fries. This is the place where farmers and actors, visitors and locals all gather in the morning.
We went to Madelyn's for breakfast. It was delicious. The staff was friendly and polite. The restaurant was clean and tidy.
