Un endroit magnifique a visiter absolument. un attrait touristique mondiale dans notre cour.
It's a really old Catholic Church with a phenomenal view of the city. I walked here from my Neiges (neighborhood) Airbnb. Worth the trip for a panoramic view of city.
Avoid coming on Sundays - it's incredibly busy! On another note, beautiful views, has both modern yet traditional architecture which makes it very beautiful! You usually have to pay for parking, so be prepared.
My birthplace is filled with beautiful churches. St. Joseph's Oratory is one of the best! This Catholic Church is one of the "must visit" destinations in Montreal. I took my wife here during the off peak season so it was not crowded. Most of the time I have been here, there have been busloads on f people.

This was like a pilgrimage.
On a gigantic hill sits a large church with a museum dedicated to a priest named Brother Andre.
They have his waxed likeness, like the wax museum, but even creepier they even have his mummified heart in a jar with a prayer that you can say for a blessing.
This church is beautiful, and there are plenty of candles to light with a fee of course.
Along the was are...

This impressive pilgrimage site is very sought by Catholics from everywhere and by non-Catholic and non-religious tourists as one of the most visited site in Montreal.

There are also masses during week days. Check their website for...

Always nice to come and visit Oratory with kids.
The parking now requests $5 donation which allows you to park on their ground but if you want to save that amount, you can always park on the Cote-des -Neiges/ side where there are many residential buildings. A little hike up the hill could be demanding for those not so fit...

It's been a long time that I haven't visit the St-Joseph's Oratory. I wanted to visit on my short trip to Montreal back in October 2014. It has changed so much (for the better of course). It is as clean as it was before, they have a brand new gift shop on the second floor. Great for souvenirs. They have... plus
This church is majestic, both on the outside as well as on the inside. It's a mix of classic cathedral in size but modern in substance, including the artwork inside the Church. The artwork is sublime, not too imposing (while some of them are huge) as is they all want to direct our attention to the glory of God whom... plus
I would highly recommend that St. Joseph's be visited before the Notre-Dame Basilica is visited. The two cathedrals are completely different and offer two completely different experiences. I wish that I had visited the Oratory before the Basilica as I could not help but be let down by the inside of the Oratory after having experienced the grandeur and sheer... plus
If you're touring around Montreal, this place is worth a visit if you can get to it. We drove up here on our last visit. It's very beautiful both inside and outside. Outside especially because of the great panoramic view. Otherwise, we probably spent less than an hour milling about.
Everyone who comes to Montreal should visit, the small church on the side is very interesting to see.
Very nice church, the biggest in Canada if I'm correct. Unfortunately, didn't get chance to get inside because it was getting darker and I was walking. But difficult to get to Oratory or back to City Center if you walk. It took me more than 2 hours and I walk fast. I have to admit, some of the parts of... plus
The church seems to have undergone some extensive outdoor renovations. It is beautiful inside - the stained glass is spectacular. To top it, the organ music is utterly divine!
We visited St. Joseph's on a gray winter day, and maybe that helped form my impressions. This is a magnificent building from the outside, in a commanding location. The cross on top of the dome, in fact, is the highest point in Montreal.
The interior, though, was austere, plain, and more like a fortress than a church. It was not...

It is a break for tourists who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of commercial Montreal. The dome place is a place for contemplation and remarkable for its simplicity. When I read some travel tips and reviews about Montreal, plenty of people put this attraction in lower ranking position but I did not see why. if you have to choose between Notre-Dame and St. Joseph's, I'd stick with Notre-Dame. Notre-Dame is what you expect from a basilica- it's very ornate, a little gothic and absolutely beautiful. St. Joseph's is a little out of the way and a little more expensive to enter. They try to nickel and dime you for everything and are all about... plus
The building itself is certainly commanding in size, and I agree that the interior is very austere. A refreshing change from all the ornate richness of other Basilicas in this city that oozes wealth and power of their patrons.
The minimalism to me reflects Saint Brother Andrea's humility-his simplicity, humbleness and modesty.
On the day we visited, there was an...

Huge church with many gift shops. Did not like the electric staircases but probably necessary due to the size of the church. Nice small bus will take you back to the streets
a great view of the city and impressive architecture. a must see. climb all the way to the top to get the best view.
The third largest Dom in the world. Very different from other religious buildings seen in the past. The interior design a bit too minimalist and perhaps "too modern" for my personal taste but definitively worth a visit.
We went to visit the beautiful modern basilica (Modern for any European) and the museum with all nativity scenes from around the world. Our kids loved it, we were amazed. The family price for the museum in $9.50. Can only be a great activity around Montreal with the kids.
This place really reminds you how big a part the Catholic church used to play in Montreal.i say 'used to' because you can see the disrepair the place has fallen into... It's reflected all over the city where churches are closed all the times and being sold off to condo developments.
Beautiful Basilica. Visited during the evening and loved the magnificant building and the the view of the city.
Great place to remember St Andre, a simple and very faithful man who initiated the St. Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal.
There are a lot of stairs!! But the outside of the Oratory is really beautiful and offers some great photo opportunities, both of the building itself and west Montreal below. On Sunday they have organ concerts that are free (with a voluntary donation that's really voluntary) and the basilica itself is very beautiful and the organ is a wonder. It... plus
Coming from Montreal we are lucky enough to have St. Joseph's nearby, and visit her often. I took my family up here and we were quite happy to walk around, and spend some time here. The oratory also has St. Andre's tomb and a beautiful view from the top of the building. The building has escalators and elevators and is Handicap accessible.
Parking is 5 dollars if you are going to drive there. And there's this museum inside the church which you need to pay to have a look. I didn't go into the museum and I'm not sure what's the price for that. But other than that, everything else is pretty much free.

St. Joseph's is quite lovely setting up on the hill overlooking the city. The outside observation deck is perfect for pictures. my third visit to the Oratory was just as enlightening as the first two. A must if in Montreal, regardless of your spiritual beliefs.
If art deco architecture is your thing, then, you will certainly enjoy this huge church. St. Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal is a famous Landmark in Montréal.
Some people go there to do pilgrimages. Some devoted followers climb the stairs on their knees then ask for a special favor to St-Joseph!
This church can be seen from a distance around the city. Endless steps, I believe 283 to get up there as it sits a top a little hill. Beautiful architecture and grounds, however I was a little disappointed with the interior....not what I expected. Definitely worth visiting. Area is also nice to visit, down Côte-des-Neiges street.
Very good day with my older parents,to pray and visit.the silence of the place is remarquable.what a nice day. My visit at th oratory was in 2009.. I returned in 2011 alone my mother was in the hospital, it was very pleasant for me and relaxing. You must go and visit.
A few friends had told me about coming here and I finally had a chance to see it for myself. Beautiful grounds and view from on top. I went at a very quiet time of day so not too many people were there. You could spend hours there, there were a few parks around to visit too. I walked up... plus

Of all the sights and experiences, this is a "must see". We were privileged to be hosted by a superb couple who knew their way around. The one thing that lingers in my memory is the display of crutches and walking canes that represent people who have experienced healing.
Went for a tour with a group. Really enjoyed the architecture and great views from up top. We had lunch in their cafeteria, the food was good & well priced. No air conditioning in there.
This was a very neat place to visit in the city. The Oratory, the architecture, the gardens all lead to a peaceful place of reflection and prayer. Or just meditate in silence. Worth a thoughtful visit.
Did not get off at this site. But the drive by it with the description of the steps in the middle was interesting.
Not only can you see from many points in Montreal but once there you are rewarded with awesome views. Surely one of the largest and most spectacular religious structures in North America. Situated atop Mont Royal, it boasts a gorgeous view. Okay, that's a lie. I hate LONG PERIODS OF EXERCISE. So I have no idea why I thought huffing and puffing my way up Mount Royal on a blisteringly warm May day was a splendid idea. But i'm glad I did.

Perhaps it should be called St. Andre's Oratorio now that he has been canonized but I'm sure he would be too humble to want this. Hands down of my favourite places in Montreal! I attend mass over here! The building is huge! Great view as well! Its definitely a must!
One more star than I gave Notre Dame Basilica because I felt like this place was much more impressive. It's HUGE and you have a lot of freedom to explore and look at everything. The pilgrims going up the steps on their knees is something I've never seen before. Definitely worth a trip out to see if you're visiting Montreal.
This was the first place I visited while in Montreal. I didn't grow up Catholic or attend a church with a giant building so every time I visit churches like these, I'm at least a little amazed.
