The artistry. The quality. The prices. You'll smile too.

the banquise has the greatest variety of poutine in town! After a night out the best choice is the trios viandes.
if you're in the mood for a poutine, there's no other place to go to othan here! Abundance amount of choices, feel free!
Open 24 hours a day in the heart of the Plateau on Parc La Fontaine's north end, this friendly, funky, hippie-meets-hipster diner is a city landmark for its poutine: La Banquise offers some two dozen variations on the standard French fries with gravy and cheese curds, with add-ons ranging from smoked sausage to hot peppers to smoked meat to bacon. "Regular" size is huge and enough for two.... more
Considering the number of Americans posting reviews, I was surprised to see that La Banquise was a charming neighborhood spot full of hungry locals, not just food-crazy tourists. It's a smallish restaurant, and they're certainly economical about their use of space - no corner shall go unused. Be prepared for a little bit of a squeeze, but everyone's in such a good mood that it doesn't... more
Can't go wrong with this place after a night of drinking.. Except a lineup to get in though if you go on the weekend after the bar
Adresse incontournable.
While it is an amazing poutine place, I don't think it's the best poutine I've ever had. It's just a regular poutine where they slap on a ton of vegetables or meat. Not particularly special.
The best poutine you'll ever eat. There is one for every taste! But it's a very crowded place depending on the time you decide to go there!
Many various and extremely delicious variations on Poutine.
Great place to go after clubbing, but for a poutine, go to Chez Claudette which is better.
An institution! Greasy poutine the way its supposed to be served - in any variety you can imagine. Tres, tres bon!

Terrible food, even worse service. I work in the food and service industry, and I really don't like giving negative reviews...but this place deserves it. I had heard this place had the best poutine in Montreal, so my husband and I eagerly went last night. We are big poutine fans, and love to go out and try different types. We waited about 20 minutes for a table, then were shoved into a corner.... more
After a drunken night, a solid dish of poutine was certainly in order. We arrived with the 3 a.m. crowd and patiently waited in line. We were ushered in by a kind bouncer and promptly order the regular poutine. The portion was generous and the curds-squeeky. Mind you, the trek from Radio lounge (FAIL) to Rue Rachel helped make the poutine delicieuse! The servers were friendly enough and the... more
all kind of poutines by a razonable prize, I love it and like taking there people that comes from another country as a tourist, is a good good way to show the Quebec food traditions
Great fries and gravy, and they now offer vegetarian gravy. Double check take out orders before you leave, though. They're wrong about a quarter of the time. Probably isn't a problem unless you're a vegan and don't want cheese on your fries. :)
It's good but OVER HYPED. Come on, it's not like the best thing in the world like everyone claims it to be.. Or am I missing something?
best poutines in montreal, so many kinds you find what you will love in there. You can even drink a beer with it.. cant get better. The building is nice since it kept the old style of it. The food can be expensive compared to other restaurants but well worth it. Only downside is that its so popular that you can wait outside in a line up depending when you go
The best poutine I've had in Montreal. Lots of poutine variations, but the classic cheese curds, gravy and French fries combination is my favourite. Cheese curds are the freshest I've had and there were plenty of them.
Open 24h. Excellent poutine and burgers. Good selection of beer. Always crowded.
Greatest choice of poutine in Montreal. Service might be a bit slow because the restaurant is almost always crowded, but it's worth the wait.
Went there 3 times because of their reputation, there is variety, but in reality they're far from decent, first they mess the basics, every single time the sauce was at best lukewarm... which means it could not melt the cheese curds... also, the cheese itself was not broken in curds (IE I had a huge chunk of cheese on one side and no cheese on the rest of the poutine) ... I also tried the... more
awesome place. i felt a little like I was stepping on local turf, but it was worth finding a parking spot for this place
Je peux... more
Pros: +Open 24 hours +Cheap food +Lots of different poutines Cons: -Very bad service( very slow) -Cooks can't read ( 3 times in a row I order a burger without tomatoes and it always arrives with it) -Food is overrated -Very long waiting time. -Loud atmosphere -The place smells of grease. In other words: if you are drunk in the plateau at 3 am go there. Otherwise choose somewhere else.
This is a must for anyone traveling to Montreal. I take everyone that comes to visit here for the best poutine in town. The service is always great but the resto is always full.

Nothing too special. Definitely good poutine, but I didn't find it too spectacular. And there's always a bit of a line up.
Brilliant place! Fantastic atmosphere and the poutine is great!
Awesome snack place to grab a quick bite any time of the day. They have a series of different types of poutines too. Slightly pricier than other places, but hey, if you want poutine at 4 am, who is going to argue if they charge 6$ for a poutine. :) Service is kind of slow though as it seems that the place is run by high school kids who are more interested in socialising than serving you food.
Their poutine are cheap and delicious! I recently tried their Taquise (guacamole, tomatoes, sour cream) which was original and their Galvaude (white turkey meat and green peas) was good!! What makes their poutine nice is the sweet tasting fries and MAGNIFICENT cheese!!! Sincerely, I love this place <3
Wandering the streets of Montreal close to midnight looking for this place was an adventure. The sign is really small. In our search, we stumbled on a bar run by an artists' collective. Had some stiff drinks. So, getting lost was cool. I like greasy food, so I liked the poutine. I had the sausage, bacon, onion poutine. It was pretty good and hit my gut like a rock. Along with beer, it... more
Best poutine I have ever had.I ordered the large Dan Dan poutine. It was enough for my boyfriend and me to feel full for the rest of the evening. The Dan Dan poutine has pepperoni, onion, and bacon. The fries were crispy, yet soft. The gravy was perfectly seasoned, yet not too overpowering. The curds were really good too. I heard that real curds will squeak when you bite into them, but these... more
Greasy, cheesy, meaty, maybe a bit salty - we really appreciated the Mexicano! Fries were crispy and sweet.
Poutine! Wow this place is awesome. If you are out partying on the weekend and need your poutine fix, this is the place to go.Be prepared to wait in line though.Going there between 2-4am can be a mistake because the line can get huge.My favourite poutine is the classic.
Super long line late at night on a Friday, so not sure what they are like during the week. We ended up taking out. I got the one with mushrooms, onions and peppers and bf got the three amigos. The cheese curds were really not good. Very chewy and hard to swallow. The french fries and selection of toppings were great.
Nothing beats walking about montreal during the night and eating poutine. Always worth a visit, although I prefer to stick with the original offerings and never really venture to try out other ones. Great crispy fries with delicious gravy.
Great poutine! They got you covered when it comes to toppings! But you cant go wrong with the classic. What i think makes la banquise standout is the quality of the fries, great taste and texture. Open 24 hours too! Thats a plus if you are out late/early and want some food to cure that hangover
La Banquise is always busy, especially in the whee hours of the night when everyone is looking for some good late night drunchies. It's definitely a Montreal staple and has had a few appearances on the Food Network because of its large selection and creativity with poutine. Despite the massive line ups, don't be intimidated...they move at a pretty good pace and, in my experience, has always... more
It will be months before we burn off all the calories we ate here. Don't be put off by the large line, it moves fast. We started waiting outside & it took us about 10 min to get a table. This is one of a few places that I wish I listened to my French CD's before coming ( The Menu was in French) but our server was great and we enjoyed our meal. 2 beers with Ham, Bacon, Pepperoni Poutine... more
I don't know why so many people like this place. In my opinion it's not worth waiting in line for. The t-Rex is good but overrated. You definitely get way more poutine when you eat in instead of taking it to go, the regular size container is small.
On a cold night we were given really prompt takeout service, and our first poutine experience was yum. We tried the mushroom and capsicum poutine, and the meatlover bf had the bacon and merguez sausage one.
Food was fun and the staff was very friendly. I will certainly make a return visit!
Best poutine ever. I had the Poutine Taquise (guac, salsa, sour cream) and it was... amazing. A poutine lover's equivalent to a religious experience. It's a tad pricey, but sooo worth it if you love (or even like) poutine. Service is a bit slow though.
I'll start off by saying I'm definitely not an expert when it comes to the "best Poutine in town," I'm just visiting so what do I know. With that said, it doesn't mean I haven't had my taste of frites, gravy and cheese curds - separately and together as one dish. All in all, my rating for La Banquise is solely based on to the two dishes my companion and I ordered (Poutine Matty & Kamikaze). ... more
I've been here many many many times, and this time, I actually tried something new. It's been a while since my last visit, and my friends from outta town wanted to have this for dinner. I was super surprised to see a Poutine called La Taquise, that had guacamole, sour cream, fresh tomatoes. Part of me was thinking there's no way that goes with gravy, or there must not be gravy... and sure... more
Can't say I'm a fan. Overpriced for mediocre fries. The cheese wasn't the awesome. We ordered the Original, three amigos, and kamikaze. The Kamikaze was probably the best b/c of the banana peppers. I'm thinking this is all a personal preference b/c the cheese curds were rubbery and kind of gross.
Seriously people, we all know that Montreal is known for three things: bagels, smoked meat and poutine. Maybe it's also known for its French culture, but that's besides the point. We are talking about food here! People used to tell me, "Look, you don't know what poutine tastes like until you try it in Montreal." My retort was, "Where's Montreal, and what the schnitzel is poutine?" I admit, this... more
Great sauce for the poutine, many choices but the simple cheese and sauce is still the best, big crowds late at night but this poutine is just great at any time, this place its all about the poutine. They just got it.
My wife had already been there a few times, but as not a fan of poutine myself (yes, I know, how can I call myself a Québécois without loving poutine?), and living nowhere near le Plateau area, I never went. Last night we had a meeting with someone in the general area, and we decided to give it a go, under the numerous suggestions of a co-worker as well. I will try to keep this as brief as... more
Being from Toronto, and used to Toronto poutines with melty (usually shredded) cheese, this review may be biased. After a 20 minute wait in the cold, this place is small, nice atmosphere (very upbeat staff), good and fast service. There was something in our water, however they replaced it immediately with a fresh pitcher. The menu was quite vast with variations of dressing a poutine. We all got... more
COMPLETELY OVERRATEDThe only reason why this spot gets such a good following is because of the 24hour open sign.Poutine should never cost that much, no matter what one puts on it. It's a good place if you feel adventurous, but when you have tasted amazing poutine before, it kinda falls flat.Service is marginal and food taste ok at best.If you're looking for somewhere to eat after a night of... more
went to this restaurant expressly for the purpose of getting our hands on some traditional french poutine. The poutine was fantastic, with many twists on the traditional for those with adventurous tastes. Good prices, good serving sizes and a nice atmosphere. All round a good, relaxed restaurant for a quick bite of poutine!
Couldn't wait to have poutine on are trip back to Montreal. Decided to give this place a try based on their appearance on Bizarre Foods, a good place to go with different options of poutine. their was a line to the door at 10:30pm, our hopes for good food were really high. I gave this place three stars based on the average of my dish (poutine with chicken) and my husbands (poutine with... more
Another gem of Montreal, but rather this gem is caked with mud. A small restaurant that is steamy, tight, and not so pleasing to the eye. We had a big group in and had a horrible time communicating or even getting up. Washrooms weren't so great and the place was a very loud, humid, and steamy air to it. But in spite of an aesthetic failure, why were people still lining up in the fridge winter... more
Went to Montreal for the day and wanted to seek out the two best things Quebec has to offer (other than beer and hockey) smoked meat sandwiches and poutine.Narrowed down my selections to Schwartz's for a sangy and La Banquise for poutine. After downing the most delectible smoked meat sandwich ever at schwartzs, we headed over the La Banquise to pile some gravy and cheese curds on top of... more

Had wanted to try this place for quite a while, so when a rush trip to the Ulysse travel bookstore found me at the corner of Rachel and St-Denis at suppertime yesterday with all my chores done, I decided that supper was going to be poutine.Showing up at 1730 hrs on a Saturday, I was thinking that Montrealers don't eat this early and I'd have no problem getting a seat. Well, I was wrong. There... more
Oh my god- heart attack on a plate 24 hours a day! So a friend told me how I must try poutine when I went to Montreal and I thought it sounded a little crazy at first, but I was up for trying something new as long as it wasn't frog legs or pâté!We ordered two plates and shared- Poutine Duleton and Poutine Classique. Poutine combines three of my favorite things-potatoes, cheese, and gravy! We... more
With so many rave reviews, you would think this place would be great outside of the 11pm-4am hammered crowd timeframe, but not so much.Although getting a seat is much easier, this place is not really recommended for just a regular dinner. Maybe it's because I'm not the biggest "squeaky curds" fan, but no one at the table seemed to be blown away by the various assemblies of fries, gravy and... more
24 hr poutinery. I'm not qualified to say if this is 'the best' poutine in Montreal - but I liked my T-Rex poutine - burger, pepperoni, bacon and hot dog. Seriously, hot dogs are underrated as a condiment. I like this place.
Servers and other employees were nice. They spoke English too. The food was delicious! The servings a huge. I didn't finish a large. I had a cheval blanc with my meal which was delicious.
Poutine is another famous Montreal dish, especially after a heavy night of drinking. La Banquise is open 24 hours and a perfect way to end a night with friends in the Plateau. There is usually a ton of people waiting at any given time, but especially later in the night. There are two lines, one for take out and one for sitting in the restaurant. I usually just get in the to go line. The wait... more
Good fries, good sauce, good cheese. I think this is a great place to have poutine... especially for poutine virgins. They have a wide variety of choices and, this said, they even have non-poutine entrees. The terrasse at the back is cute and enjoyable. The wait staff is okay.. the service is a bit slow and lacking, in my opinion, but then again, they're usually pretty busy so I sympathize with... more
This was a must stop on my trip to Montreal. I had heard of this restaurant from the travel shows on Food Network and from some friends that had traveled to Montreal. When we went the restaurant was packed, but eventually after fifteen minutes or so we got a table and ordered. My friend ordered the T-REX and I had the poutine bacon. This was a great stop for us as we filled up on great... more
I can see how La Banquise would be touristy. It never closes, serves what you want after you stumble out of a bar, and it has been televised on certain travel shows in the US. But after going several times at 3am, I'm not so sure if it is. Every time I was in line, I had gotten into conversations with native Montrealers, even sat and ate with, most of whom were surprised to learn that three... more
Sooooo many choices!! Looks may be deceiving! They look small but they are deep and delicious! And just amazing especially the T-Rex!! Omg was that good!!
In all my years living in and visiting Montreal, I'd never once been to this place until very recently when I was on a late-night run to pick up five dozen bagels at Fairmount to dole out to friends back in Toronto. Kitchens were already closed in most places so it seemed to be one of very few places to eat (it's open 24 hours, how convenient--AND dangerous). It's your typical MTL greasy-spoon... more
Sloppy poutine is best served late, really late, like 3am. Maybe it's because you're too drunk to really gauge the food, maybe it's because you suddenly don't give a hoot about your diet, or maybe it's the electric vibe you get by being surrounded by a room full of poutine craving lunatics. I say it's all 3!!! Long live La Banquise.
I like the poutine here. The fries are well made, and the gravy isn't too salty. The only gripe I have is with the vegetarian poutine that they serve... It's so plain! I wish they had more than one choice for vegetarians. The vege poutine is just vegetarian gravy, cheese and fries... They could have more with caramelized onions, or something of the sort... I was kind of disappointed since I was... more
My husband and I went to Montreal to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary. We are lovers of food and really wanted to go somewhere that had a distinct food culture. To us, it just sounded like something we needed to get our hands on!We tried poutine for the first time at this... more
If you've ever lived in Montreal for a reasonable amount of time, you have been to La Banquise. This establishment is the king of Montreal poutine culture, the emperor of the poutine empire, the gladiator that leaves everyone else in the dust! Why, you ask.. Why should such grandiose compliments be bestowed upon this institution? Well:- Poutine has never seen so much variety! Mushrooms, peas,... more
YUM. Oh man, this was delicious! I rather regret now that I did not have the poutine, but seeing as I was still slightly scared of poutine (we'd only been in Montreal for a few days), I had one of the regular breakfasts. Bonus - they had English menus! For the French-speaking impaired such as myself, this was awesome. The breakfast was huge. Unbelievable for the price! In DC, a breakfast that... more

La Banquise is regarded as having one of the best poutine's in Montreal. My SO and I made the pilgrimage this past weekend on a weekend getaway to Montreal. It offers about 25 kinds of poutine, but it’s nothing gourmet. It’s the local favourite at 3am and it's decent, but not the best poutine.
Had the Poutine Classique while on tour here last year, after being told by almost every Montreal resident to go here for the best poutine. It was very good and the Large portion is more than enough for one person, I'd say it's even enough for 2 people.
Oh my God I'm a believer. As a skeptic of all things Canadian from "eh?" to "aboot", I came to Montreal prepared to hate poutine (though secretly feeling intrigued). I was staying at the Hilton Bonaventure and was feeling pretty lazy. No taxi, no one to go eat poutine with, no car, feeling comfy in my hotel bed, etc. However at the recommendation of a friend who had lived in montreal, I dragged... more
They have 25 different kinds of poutin! It was difficult to choose one of them, but I eventually landed on “Poutine Taquise,” with guacamole, tomatoes and sour-cream on top.
Let me start off by saying that as a Quebec child (and therefore, a connoisseur of poutine), La Banquise is by far the most delicious Montreal poutine place I've ever eaten at, and if eating and thinking about eating poutine there all day long is wrong, then I don't want to be right. This place is open real late, so if you're looking for a place to clog up your arteries after bars close, then... more
Best poutine ever! Crazy variety and blazing fast service!
After a day long bike ride, my friend and I figured we should treat ourselves to some poutine. There were so many choices, I really couldn't choose..they all looked VERY good. Seriously............poutine. SO MUCH POUTINE!!!!!!!!!!!! I pretty much have made a point to eat poutine as much as possible while visiting Canada, and let me just say, this poutine was outstanding. Granted the service... more
I'm unfamiliar with the poutine game in Montreal, but coming here, I thoroughly enjoyed my "Elvis" dish (standard poutine with the addition of beef, mushrooms and green peppers). Don't dig the hipster vibe of the place, but the service was friendly enough and a nice hot... more
First-time poutiners and we're hooked! When we walked in, it was packed, and was even more so when we left -- a true local hangout. Finally got to go! I don't do long lines so I didn't get to go last time I was out here but this time we waited. I love poutine. Especially with bacon. And that's what we got. We also got a salad because you really should have something green when eating this stuff, and the one with avocado doesn't count. The cheese was a bit squeaky but other... more
Greasy great poutine for the late night hunger attack, dont expect high quality... just high good old junky delish!
I mean, the concept behind putting toppings on a poutine is pretty cool, but La Banquise didn't quite deliver, or lived up to my expectations.
Love this restaurant! Came in on a hot day in Montreal for a cold soda and a big plate of POUTINE. Was some of the best tasting fries, gravy and additions I have ever had!

This place has awesome fries and poutine. It is always full of people especially after midnight. The decor of the place is nothing crazy as it's one of those 24-hr joint lookalike. Theyre knows to be "the best poutine in Quebec".
Just in case you did not already know it, La Banquise is the most famous poutine restaurant in Montreal. I always bring people visiting the city to this place so they can enjoy one of the 20-30 poutine available.
La Banquise is known for its amazing poutine, and opening for 24 hours as well. Went to a club till 2-3 am and we were so happy that la Banquise was opened to fill up our hungry stomachs
I have gone twice this trip and the poutine is great. Many kinds to choose from...the one with hot sauce and banana peppers was a great compliment to any of the meat ones. Best poutine ever! I was recommended here for their legendary poutine and I wasn't disappointed. The "mexican" twist (with olives, tomato, onion and chillis) was amazing. Great for 2am chow-down or a normal lunch!
