The food here is great, don't get me wrong. My rating is reflecting the experience. If you have been here even twice, what's the point in coming back again? It's like hearing someone's old jokes, or watching re-runs.
This place is great, the food is amazing! It's always had that going for it, and I wish I knew the recipes for those two sauces they make (steak & seafood). I crave JV all the time. The only problem is they haven't changed their little comedy routine since I was 8 years old. It's almost painful to go there all the time because you have to sit through the whole routine, you can't just get the food and get out. So I only go once a year, I can't take more than that.
My favourite restaurant that i have gone to so far. The staff and cooks are always very nice. I go at least once a month and they have never let me down!!
After making a reservation for a Saturday night for 5 people (and phoning to confirm multiple times as we were instructed to) we arrived 20 minutes prior to our reservation. The waiting area was very busy and there were no hostesses or any staff around until about 5 minutes prior to our reservation. While 4 of us were waiting we received a text message from the 5th in our party stating she had... more
This is a fun place to be no doubt. If you are curios I would recommend dining here once to find out what it is all about. For me the fun value stopped the moment I put the food into my mouth, I had to force it down my throat as oppose in spitting it out. Worse experience for my taste buts ever.
Awesome place, great food and great fun. I've been many times, and my only complaint is not to go last seating as they don't seem to do as good a job, I felt really rushed and we got the impression that they all want to quickly go home.
This restaurant has always been our favorite in Calgary, and we used to love to bring our children and enjoy the great food and the show the Chefs put on as they cooked our meal at the teppanyaki table. For some reason the restaurant has changed greatly since they moved to their current location. Our disappointing experience started when I called to make reservations for a Saturday evening. We... more
Please. Please. Please do not support this establishment. You work hard for your money, please do not waste it here. We had a terrible experience and walked out. After being bullied into coming in 30 minutes prior to our reservation time to wait in the small waiting room, we were berated by the shockingly rude hostess. Her attitude and demeanor was so awful that we (all 14 of us) decidedly to... more
We made a reservation for 14 people and was warned repeatedly that they would give our table away if our party wasn't there 15min prior. With 13 people there 30min early they told us they are charging is $25 for the missing person. When we tried to explain the situation the manager/owner told us we were warned several times and we refused to listen. I hate that place.
My cousin called to make a reservation for 14 people and this is how her conversation went down: Portia: hi I wanted to make a reservation for 14 people. We're flexible for time so whatever works for you. Japanese Village: ok this is what you are going to do. You are going to have your entire party here at 5:30. If one person is late I'm canceling your reservation. Then you are going to call me... more
I eat out a lot and I have to say one of the best meals I have had. The chef was wonderful and kept us entertained. Price for what we received was well worth it. The waitress/hostess staff leave a lot to be desired though.
good food, good service. also serves steak which is not bad as well. very wide range of options for the menu
This is a horrid establishment that rushes you in and out and has exceedingly overrated and overpriced food. The 'entertainment' is contrived, awkward and not remotely Japanese; Teppanyaki is after all, an American invention. The chefs and owners are not Japanese, and nor are the extremely rude wait staff. The place, like the masses of pseudo-Japanese restos in Calgary, is 100% Chinese. Calling... more

This is by far one of the best dining experiences i have had in Calgary, the chef we had we excellent with a great sense of humor...I would change nothing about our visit to Japanese village!
I have gone here now for 8 years and used to visit it at least once a week for lunch however the service got worse and worse until we decided to stop going for awhile. Then yesterday we go back to even worse service increased prices and less portions. I hate when restaurants do that they get popular then jack up their prices and lower the quantity it just makes no sense. As far as I can see Jap... more
The whole process was so rushed and routine. The unfriendly waitress demanded our orders and rushed everything. They even took my son's plate away before he was finished. For the amount of money you pay for what is supposed to be a great experience, it was horrible. I will never go back to this restaurant again!
I have been to JP at least 40 times over the years and always loved the food...frankly it is still good and decent value...however I always get a small Caesar even though I always ask for it "tall" . I want the food but I just cant handle the" getting and get out in 75 min flat" schedule they force on you. they literally ask you to leave moments after desert is served...no chance for after... more

We were a party of 7 on Saturday April 9th @8:30pm. I was told to call between 11:30am-1pm on day of to get the reservation #, told that we would not be seated until entire party was there and that there would be some charge if entire party does not show up. I can understand why these procedures were in place, I think how something is conveyed could be modified to be more customer friendly.My... more
The hostess was rude, the server was rude, the overall service was terrible. The chef was the only friendly person in the whole restaurant. The food was not tasty and the salmon was not fresh. We was rushed through our entire birthday celebration. This was the worst restaurant in Calgary. We will never come back.
I always enjoyed Japanese village in the past and was able to stand their repetitive emphasis on being on time and insistence on having a drink at their lounge while waiting. However, last night pushed me over the edge. I booked a reservation for 7 people, was told that I needed to call on the day between 11-1 to get a confirmation number. Fine...called and was told no less than 5 times that... more
by Hanna (from Calgary) June 2010 - I have eaten at Japanese Village over the years, mainly on special occasions. Every time I go I always leave with a full belly and a smile on my face. Going to Japanese Village is all about the experience. The chef cooks the food on a hot iron grill that is surrounded by a table of onlooking patrons. Watching him cook is quite entertaining and the chefs try... more
Above par, but really pretty average- foodwise. Ambiance is a little more lively. I thought our chef could have been a bit chattier, but oh well.
Went to Japanese Village for Tobi and Chris's birthday lunch today! I love Japanese Village and would recommend it to everybody because the experience is unlike any other place I've been... more
We went here last night although I tried making a reservation the previous night with no luck as they didn't answer the phone. Took a chance and drove down and being a Saturday evening it was busy and we had a wait. by Nicole (from Calgary) June 2009 - I visited Japanese Village with a couple of co-workers for lunch. I had never been to a teppanyaki style restaurant before and didn't know what to expect. It was interesting to sit around a hot grill and watch the chef cook your food right in front of you. A starter is included in your meal and I opted for the salad. I'm not sure what kind of dressing they... more
by Melissa (from Calgary) June 2009 - I recently went to Japanese Village for lunch with co-workers. Reservations are a must. The lunch menu is simple, and includes beef, chicken, shrimp, salmon, and filet mignon. Prices are extremely reasonable for the location, and the quantity of food. I ordered the filet mignon (with mushrooms for an additional charge), which comes with soup or salad,... more
by Jason (from Calgary) May 2009 - Hidden behind Gulf Canada Square in the beltline of downtown Calgary is a great little place called Japanese Village. They serve up some tasty and entertaining lunches. A large group of co-workers came here to celebrate an anniversary and were delighted to have chosen this restaurant. You need to come in at a specific time for lunch (reservations definitely... more

This place has great service, great performances and very tasty food but the price is little much for food that you can get anywhere else... also, the atmosphere is interesting but it is really smokey in there. I think more ventilation is needed.
