Hy's Steakhouse has been Ottawa's premiere steakhouse for over 20 years! There is no other experience like it in the city

I think this is a suitable place for culinary delights with the family, except where fun, food was also very interesting. from the start of heavy foods, appetizers and delicious desserts all. I highly recommend you visit here.
For a long time I wanted to eat here, but as its very pricey, I finally went on my 50th birthday. So expectations were very high for our group.
Nice looking place. Chairs a bit to low for eating even though I am tall.
Best waiter we have ever had, Zack. Attentive but not that fake friendly attitude. The other staff clearing and helping Zack were less than impressive though unfailingly polite....

Enjoy paying too much for a mediocre steak, while dining under the ambiance of an energy saving floodlight? Look no further than Hy's Steakhouse!
Great Food, Beautiful steak, perfectly cooked! Exquisite sides, salads prepared tableside. Also great people watching!
Mahogany panels, big leather seats, great lighting. Staff is knowledgeable and attentive! DOn't miss this place!
Service excellent however the food was not so good this time around. Prime Rib was tough, Double cooked potatoes was under cooked, Sautee Mushrooms appeared to be cooked at a lower temperature not browned. Very slow service. Chatty pleasant waiting staff. Steak cooked perfectly but wouldn't visit again. Would rather go to the Keg, half the price, bigger menu.
Started in the deserted cocktail lounge, waited about 10 minutes to be served and another ten for the drinks. Shown to our table on time, drinks slowish then waited 45 minutes for our steaks. There were nine other tables of diners so not exactly busy. The food was good but nothing special. Waiting staff chatty but not very attentive.
One of the best steaks the me and my wife have had! Great service and a nice touch of making the cesar salad right at the table! A great place to spend our 10th anniversary. Thanks to Chris our waiter. We will be back.
My wife and I were celebrating our 32nd wedding anniversary. We loved the place, it was quiet, the food was good and had a good list of red wine. The server was great and very professional. The steaks were cooked exactly as we ordered and they were was very tasteful especially mine with the Hy sauce. Great place to dine in a quiet environment.
The service was amazing. Chris was attentive and accomodating yet not intrusive. The steak was done to perfection. Amazing
Although quite expensive, the food, service and experience were top notch. 5 stars without hesitation.
We are from a city that is well known for it's restaurants, great restaurants should I say.(Quebec City). Nothing against Ottawa, but overall we always been disappointed ..not the same standards. I've been here many times and I'm less impressed with each visit. I went as part of a large group. Most said their food was good, one or two were less impressed. I was totally disappointed. That is how your guests will feel after a meal at Hy's. With the attentive service of server Nancy, the great food and wonderful ambiance, it was an amazing day. And, the celebrity diners in attendance also helped.
Our server was excellent - made good recommendations, was pleasant and efficient.
Was hosted for dinner, was so disappointed.
Hy's is very old style, and the menu seems unchanged in 30+ years. That's ok, it's a traditional thing. The prices are very high, which is not necessarily the problem - there are expensive steak restaurants that serve great steaks.
The problem here was that the food was quite poor. It's hard to...

Unimaginative food that was indifferently prepared. Salad could have come out of a bag and steak might have been microwaved as it was cool on the exterior and hot in the middle.

The Cesar salad and spinach salads that are made table side are always succulent !
The steaks are expensive for what you get but they are good, the service is high quality and setting is plush. Always a nice venue for a special occasion ( for the normal folks not on an expense acct).
Also, nice wine list!
service + food is very near perfect,
specialized staffing with your prime waiter supported by assistants for beverage/bread etc,
all traditional dressed in black + white aprons,
other reviews have commented on slow service (Hy's offers traditional relaxed dining, not McDonalds as quick as possible, so be objective in your expectations, Hy's offers you a very high class dining experience)...

Very slow service, it took an hour and a half to get our steaks. Staff have a poor sense of customer service. The food was dated and bland.
Food was not good, not good at all. Every experience keeps getting worse.

Room is fun.
One of my favorite hangouts for wine as you see from my above noted comments. However, wanting to impress some girlfriends from work I arranged for us to stop by for a Wednesday noon Birthday lunch. Busy as Hy's can be at noon in the downtown core our server was swamped, but efficient. She was even kind enough to take a break and snap a picture for us!

A stodgy, conservative and overpriced steak house which serves reasonable cuts of meat at unreasonable prices. Nothing creative or unique in the cooking or presentation and lots of older men squiring younger women; clientele have the patina of "I've arrived" but the restaurant is coasting on an old rep.
This is quality dinning. The food is usually excellent, well presented and very well prepared. The décor is upscale so one should dress in going out casual. Jackets for the Men.
We went here for supper and really enjoyed ourselves. Everyone loved the food, and not one complaint at all. The service was amazing.
Decided to treat ourselves to some fabulous steaks while vacationing in Ottawa for the long weekend. The ambiance was posh, comfortable, and elegant.
