History
Established in 1972
First Indian restaurant to serve the community.
Went for masala chai and sweets. The masala chai was outstanding. Some sweets were good but others not so much.
Enjoyed the varieties of vegetable and bean dishes. Many sauces to accompany your dishes. Clean and spacious restaurant. I prefer bolder flavors. They also sell sweets.
Food is very so-so. But the worst is what the do with the "sweets bar". Every time I have purchased sweets from here, I have been ripped off. Initially, I did not know how to distinguish the sweets, and they put up no signs on prices. I ask the price, and they quote $X.XX per pound. So, for a long time, I'd buy an assortment, and then pay. After a long time, and I got more familiar with the... more
With old samosas sitting all night on display I don't feel feel very persuaded to go into this restaraunt.
I did anyways though and I wasn't impressed
Decently good Indian food. They mixed up a couple of our orders but the customer service was great and the food tasted alright, though I've had better. The portion sizes were alright as well, nothing too large for the price.
Would recommend the chicken tandoori though, tasted v. good.
Asked a local cab driver where to get good Indian food and he told us E. 49th and Main was the best area for Indian. We step out the cab and saw several restaurants. We arbitrarily choose the Himilaya and I'm so glad we did! They offer a buffet but we chose to order from the menu (another good decision in my opinion). We ordered Garlic Naan, cheese stuffed Nan, Vegetable Samosa, Chicken Samosa... more
I really like this place it's not the best ever Indian food, it is very good though. Price is great think 15ish for all you can eat butter chicken?? Sign me up! Service is always good too, always bringing water and clearing plates.
Fine selection of well prepared fresh authentic Indian cuisine at the buffet bar. Veg or non-veg option. Very tasty and satisfying.
Poor custmour service. went to this location so many times but today wasnt good. they rushed my food. not happy, and yes not comimg back
Have gone to this place many times. Buffet is OK. But they put very little meat varieties in Buffet. Sweets are among best in town. Parking difficult to find. Price a liitle bit high. Service and washroom are good.
Very well cooked and tasty vegetarian dishes! Great variety. Relaxed and clean atmospher. Modest polite service. It was a pleasure to dine there at the end of our family trip.
Still trying to decide what was worse, the food or the service. Never tasted so bad Indian food. The Amritsari Kulcha is just a piece of Pita, seriously !!! and the buffet items are mostly tasteless.
Petty decent buffet, which is almost identical to the All India Sweet's buffet a few feet away -- rather strange choice to have something so similar so close. Nevertheless, the food is of reasonable quality, with vegan, vegetarian and meat options. Not the most elegant food, but it's tasty and varied enough. The price makes this a great deal at around $11 at any time of the day. Good pick if... more
I use to love this place and came here often with friends. Unfortunately this changed on a quiet Sunday night. It was the 29th day of September, and it was also the night of a lunar eclipse/super blood moon. (Wow, I should start writing novels... This sounds awesome so far)
We came in for dinner on this beautiful night. my girlfriend opted for her regular, the veggie buffet, and I went for the...

The vegetarian buffet was a little under $10. In general, the place seems very similar to the All India sweets place one block up the street. Nothing fancy, just a satisfying meal for a good deal.
Great place if your feeling very hungry. They have an all you can eat vegetarian buffet. This is perfect for me since I don't eat meat. The place was clean and the food was fresh. I would defiantly come back here again.
Excellent jalebis and chai! Buffet is quite a spread. Lamb curry with saag, is a must.
It's a good deal for the price, and fairly tasty. The people working there are very nice and friendly. Service is great. I go here all the time when I am craving inexpensive Indian food. It's not gourmet, but its a good neighborhood/family/student restaurant.
Boring and no taste, the paneer tikka was definitely not made in a tikka oven, was fried in oil and some spices were sprinkled on top. The coconut chutneys tasted like it had gone bad, and jalebi tasted stale and old. Total disappointment
Went for the buffet. The chick peas were good but that was about it. Gobi aloo was tasteless. Naan was old and cold, Kari was tasteless and the rice was so overlooked there was water in it. Entire experience was underwhelming r.
For overall action, food, ambience and value, in this neighbourhood, H is the go-to place. There is Original Tandoori down the block, and Tandoori on 65th, but this has the most light, most spacious and buffet is accessible on either side.
Corner location helps, parking all around and free.
Credit cards OK.
Special note as they offer a specialized vegetarian buffet for just $10.95.

We tried lunch buffet. Food was horrible. The staff is very unfriendly. We will never visit again!
Notoriously unfriendly, but the food is consistent, of a pretty good quality, and less expensive than most other places. I've been coming here for over 10 years, and continue to go whenever I'm in the neighborhood. The buffet is great.
Just for their horrible customer service, I would give them One Star. The man behind the counter did not seem friendly at all. He had this frown on his face when I greeted him to purchase sweets (gulab jamun and samosa's from there). The items purchased were ok. They need to polish on their customer service skills, I know it's his restaurant but you need to greet your customers in a certain way... more
Food is ok ,not too great nor too bad for its price range but that doesn't mean you can behave like that. Staff is not friendly at all.. As soon as you enter into 'shop cum restaurant' they look at you as if you are alien.
And if you asked the detail receipt of your bill you 'll their enemy number one. So beware...

Not the greatest. Be careful! I think they will overcharge you. I went by myself and had the buffet and was charged $14.95. The woman asked me how many (what a question to ask since I was the only one in the restaurant) and when I said only 1 person, she hesitated and said $14.95. I found this expensive given the selection available; at any rate, the naan bread was hard like a rock and I did... more
This is a second floor restaurant that, from the street, looks intriguing, yet easy to pass by. We were so glad to have ascended the short staircase. The owner is one of the people who takes care of you and the food is very enjoyable. The backyard tables are quiet and the space is very nice. I really recommend it.
Stopped in for a quick lunch at Himalaya Restaurant on our visit to Vancouver from California. Place had a buffet but food looked very old and if there were cobwebs over it I would not have been surprised. We ordered off the menu and enjoyed the masala dosa and fresh chapati. The paneer makhani was just average as it was... more
Unfortunately we will not be returning.. tasted like they served day old nann also food wasn't fresh either. We thought we'd give them one more shot by visiting their Richmond location. Arrived to almost the same buffet minus the cheese in the "peas n cheese" I asked them why there wasn't cheese? The owner/server said they are using potatoes and that only their other location has cheese. As we... more
I have been here for over 10 years with my mom. This place is a mother daughter thing for us whenever we are on main street. I agree that the customer service could use improvement, even though we are regulars I find that the standards aren't good enough. The reason why we keep coming back is that the menu items have been steady for years, therefore, whenever we have a specific craving for... more
Food was good. Customer Service needs improvement, almost non-existent . Their Richmond location however great service and food.
This place is in our regular rotation. The food is very good for what it is and consistent although a tad spicier at lunch time. We always get the vegetarian buffet and we don't do sweets so I won't review that or the regular menu. Recommended.
The momos are particularly good, and having been to nepal, very authentic. The food generally was very fresh and tasty, and the servers were lovely. Not expensive. Very gentle ambience! A very good all rounder.
Good food. Looks like in a house concerted into a restaurant. Reminded me of food my x-roommate used to make.Good Nepali food.
Went there on 1/23/13, in the afternoon. Terrible service. The person didn't even care went I walked into the place. Just like how he doesn't care about when I walked in, I don't care to give them a 1/5.
Went to here cause it was close to where we were. Has there buffet an the curry chicken was excellent. The other items were average but one of the best curry chicken I have had. I would return and would recommend this place. It is a casual place and very well priced.
I had been to this place before to buy Indian sweets - which are delicious-, and had always considered to dine here since the all you can eat buffet prices are so cheap (and there are always real Indians dining here, which is a good sign). I never actually sat down to try the food - until today.
My gut feeling was correct, me and my girlfriend found the food to be very enjoyable! We had the...

We were searching for the Indian restaurant so i can feed my little one with our native food in main st also called Punjabi street in Vancouver and find this restaurant were parking is also close by.As soon as i entered i felt so clean and neatly arranged classic chairs of india and it was all-day buffet restaurant so array... more
Vancouver's Punjabi Market is filled with Indo-Canadian shops and restaurants up and down Main Street. It is an area often overlooked by many, including myself, who once lived less than 3 miles away. Seven of us came to this Punjabi restaurant at the heart of this culinary beacon. The restaurant is very spacious, has plenty of natural lighting, and a mix of long and short tables that surround... more
i had the non-veg buffett yesterday. what a disapointment. the butter chicken was more like chicken curry, the naan was stale, the mango lassi was pink, PINK!!!!never going there again, other indian resturants have raised the bar in the city, and what they're serving there doesnt compare.
I had only eaten at All India's buffet, so a friend and I decided to try Himalaya for a change and to compare. The buffet was similar, except that Himalaya offers a meat option for an extra charge, and their naan was not quite as good (but I am known to go into ecstasy over the super-fresh naan at All India, so that isn't saying much). There were far fewer people than I usually see at All... more
Took my family to have an indian buffet at this restaurant. had come on a three day visit . The food was far from good. Noticeably , nothing was worth tasting. food was cold, especially, butter chicken tasted far from the taste we r used to. Jalebis were firm . staff was unapproachable, unwelcoming. served us just 3 naan's n then disappeared. regretted having dinner there. never going back.
What a disappointment. My wife wanted to take the children for dinner after a long day. She wanted to have Indian, so we took the children this evening to Himalaya. This was our second time here. When I arrived, I asked how much for the children, as I had two (11 and 6 year old). I was told 8.99 per child, but I told the guy that the children won't each much, so he agreed to charge me 8.99... more
Clean place, simple but tastly food choices, friendly staff!
That's all you will need if you want to try out an East Indian type of food!
I had the chance to try some of their take-out samosas the other day. Couldn't stop laughing at the picture of the 2 kids on the takeout box. (see pics)
The samosas are definitely one of the best I've had in a long time. Usually they're too mushy or dry on the inside, but this place gets them just right. Oh, and the chutney is AWESOME. It has a kick, but the flavour is very subtle. Doesn't...

People either prefer Himalaya, or they prefer All India Sweets. I'm an All India Sweets kind of gal, and I'll tell you why:
-The buffets are quite similar: vegetarian for All India, and the option of a veggie or meaty buffet at Himalaya. The added cost of the meat buffet at Himalaya though isn't really worth it when you only get two additional dishes (that didn't look all that good). I guess...

I have a very intimate relationship with this place. I have been coming to the local markets with my parents as a small child to stock up on Indian groceries and the only respite I had was our final destination of this restaurant.
For the past 30 years I have been coming and it is a very good representation of Indian sweets and snack food. I have had a few entrees and the buffet and honestly...

Starving, we headed for the lunch buffet.
You got two options. $9.99 for veg only, $11.99 w/ meat. There were only two meat dishes (butter chicken and curried chicken), so not really worth the extra twoonie.
I liked the chickpea dishes the best, with one actually have a decent level of spice. The rest were so-so. Like a lot of Indian places, I wished they used thigh meat instead of breast for...

I walked past this the other day and decided to give it a try.
Although the vegetarian fare was yummy , the nonveg is forgettable. Save your $2 and go for the Vegetarian buffet. The sweets are excellent though. Also the rice in the buffet was not boiled properly.
My husband is part Indian and I have not even come close to mastering the fine art of Indian cuisine, so when when we get a craving for samosa's we come here. In our opinion they are the best in Vancouver however my husbands cousin assures me that there are much better places in Surrey... I digress. The beef samosas are served in a little lake of curry chick peas that are spiced just right. ... more
I have never gone to an Indian restaurant before. It was very interesting for me to see. Inside it was an acceptable environment and the people there were very friendly. For me the food was just in the middle not extremely delicious and not terribly bad. I had a samosa and it was a pretty large portion for $4.19 so... more
this place was okay, the service was okay and the environment was okay. the buffet had very little choices however there is a quiet environment
This is considered to be a great Indian buffet place and we went their on the recommendation of several people in the Punjabi Market area. The selections are plentiful with options for both a meat and a vegetarian buffet plan. Everything was delicious, including the naan and the samosas. There is an extensive dessert selection that, it appears, the restaurant... more
Himalaya sits at the corner of Main St. and 50th Ave., in the heart of the Punjabi enclave. The cleaner and brighter interior as compared to All India Sweets on the same block is very inviting and Himalaya wins hands down in this department, the reason why I came in to try it. Err, plus of course, the digital signage is screaming two words at me, words I can never say no to - Indian + buffet.... more
I was going to make something for a potluck dinner, but was too lazy to cook. However, I stumbled upon this place.
I only wanted a dozen samosas. They had them and they were fantastic. Not too greasy and nice and crispy!
The samosas were the only thing I had, but if everything else is this good, I can't wait to go back!
Awesome!
Not sure what rating to give this. Here's the scoop: $12 all you can eat buffet. I remember a mung dahl, mutter paneer, alu gobi, butter chicken, naan, and salad. I'm missing a couple but thats what I ate. Toned down westernized Indian food. Staff was nice but we waited forever for chai. For half an hour the old codger serving us assured us it was on the way. The guy at the table next to us was... more
I didn't choose this place for decor or service, I chose it for food! Good, authentic Indian food, which I think we got. The Mulligitawny soup rocked! and a curried cauliflower pancake? was awesome. Samosa's and chickpeas... yum. They also had a buffet going, but we declined. Had a beer and watched it snow and enjoyed ourselves.
