History
Established in 1993
Well into our third generation of grape growing, the Hernder family has transformed a love of viticulture into one of the largest family Estate winery operations in Canada.
A natural progression of events began after Gottfried Hernder emigrated from Germany to western Canada. In 1939, the family moved to the "Grapeview" area of St. Catharines, Ontario, to a mixed...

I recently attended a wedding at hernder estates, and it was fantastic! The staff was very friendly, the property was gorgeous, and the food was spectacular! Although I am not much of a wine drinker myself, i heard mixed reviews on the wine itself, amazing from others, simply a shrug of the shoulders. All in all it was a perfect venue for a wedding, with only a few short comings. One of the few... more
Loved it! Loved it! Loved it!
Hernder Winery has been around for a long time. The place is not quite as modern as many others, nor is the tasting room able to easily accommodate the tour bus groups that are attracted by the wines and large tour bus parking area. As other reviews have mentioned, you might want to come back later if you see tour buses in the lot.
That being said, this place is...

I went here for our end of the year sorority formal.
I've been to a few wineries before and this one wasn't the prettiest I've been to.
I was only inside though so I can't speak for any other part of the winery.
The event space didn't wow me.
The carpets looked extremely dated and every time someone walked on the dance floor, it shook.
The washrooms were small and crowded with weird painted...

Hernder Estate Wines is one of the most down to earth wineries during my Niagara wineries crawl.
The wines here are decent and affordable. Good for everyday drinking (even cheaper than some of my large format beers!) The staff here is all really welcoming and the pour definitely really generous! I was though not too crazy about their Iced fruit wines, maybe for slush making?

We attended a wedding at Hernder Estate Wines in Dec 2012. The venue is absolutely beautiful and was a perfect location for the wedding. The staff were friendly and attentive from the moment we arrived until 1:30am when we left. The wedding had about 160 people. We were upstairs in the restored Victorian barn and the room was breathtaking! Dinner... more
I had heard so many good reviews about this winery, so I am hoping that are stop that day was a fluke. We had just arrived there at the same time as a bus tour. Everyone from the bus (50 or so) were all standing around the tasting area of the winery store. Upon immediately walking into the winery, my... more
We did the wine tour, wine tasting and had steak and chicken. They have different wines, excellent red wine, and beautiful ice wine.
Staff are amazing, food is just perfect, wine is spectacular, ambiance is just right.
A must visit.
This was our first time visiting this family run winery. We stopped here on our last day using our Discovery Pass, and we loved the wines. We all purchased a lot to bring home with us. I know I will be ordering a case very soon. You can also purchase a variety of vinegars, oils and so on in the... more
We love to go to the smaller estate wineries for the more personal attention and education. It is usually a chance to meet the actual owner/wine makers themselves, as it was in this case. The staff were friendly, very down to earth people, but aside from Kevin himself, we didn't get a lot of info about their products. None the... more
Attended a wedding at Hernder on 09-16-2012. The location is just beautiful for a wedding! Lots of opportunity for pictures in a gorgeous setting. The staff were accomidating when everything ran a little late, and SUPER-friendly! After ordering my second drink, I never had to ask again. As soon as I walked up to the bar my preferred drink was... more
The staff was so accommodating, and the ice wine was...yum! We didn't take the tour, but the cost was minimal, as they only requested a nominal donation for the ice wine samples. Also, given the prices of other ice wines I've seen out there, the prices were very reasonable.
Good wines and very nice people. The covered bridge is a nice touch. There were two weddings there the day we were there - a very nice setting to tie the knot.
We went for a tasting here, we were staying at Jordan Manor only 1.5 K away.
It was very busy, but we were very well looked after. We all enjoyed the tour of the place, and the history of the winery and so forth was very interesting, Hernders Winery actualy backs onto the Jordan Manor B and B, very convenient.
I have gone to multiple weddings here and have all been gorgeous! And the food and wine has always been wonderful!
information and exciting.People were very helpful is you had questions about the wine and the different types that they have to offer.
The whole area is very nice. At Christmas time, there is a craft sale.
Excellent staff. Amazingly friendly and a very nice varietal selection of wines including, red, white, ice and speciality. The tasting area is so cozy and comfortable and the staff go out of their way to impress you. The surrounding area is nice for walks or weddings. A little bland on the picturesque moments but there is a nice courtyard with statues and flowers to walk and relax. The wines... more
Have been here for various events. Grounds are almost always nicely manicured, which allows for nice photo ops. Wine shop lovely as well.
We make an annual pilgrimage to this winery and stock up for the year! You are sure to find a number of wines here that you like! The staff in the store are fabulous, go out of their way to help you.
Was there for an event on the grounds. There were horse drawn wagon tours (lame for adults, great for kids). The property is impressive and large with a huge mid-1800s restored barn as the centrepiece. The wine tasting room is busy and this is a place for tasty fruit wines. The grape wines are not their forte in my view.... more
Great place to visit. Well priced wines. Great spot for a small wedding as they have facilities here. Try their Rhubarb wine - if you like ice wines, you will love their rhubarb wine!
I was not expecting much having never being to a winery, however I really loved it as well as my bf. The lady, can't remember her name, owner's wife was hillarious and staff was very friendly. I like that they have other stuff to, like hot sauce, grape seed oil, good place to buy gifts or for yourself. Although I... more
Hernder Estate Winery is set in an old country barn You reach the winery by driving over a small covered bridge; there is a pond and fountain that lies nearby the patio outside the winery. The winery is a popular site for weddings and occasionally you can see the wedding couple.
The staff know the wines and are very willing...

The wine is fantastic (cranberry is my fav) and the grounds are stunning.
***Hernder Estate as a reception venue, guest's point of view***
Hernder Estate has beautiful reception hall. As far as I could tell there were two halls to choose from both of which have a very rustic feel to them with wood panels, beams and walls as well as a picturesque stone wall inside to add character. The bar is small, which worked fine for the 100 people at the wedding, but you may run...

Hernder Estates Winery hosted the 2011 NiEGGrafest. Much better this year than in 2010. Being on the front lawn was fantastic!! It was great to cook for so many people all day long. My only complaint is by the time I was done cooking and we'd packed everything up, the winery shop was closed so we couldn't buy a nice... more
The wine is fantastic! Enjoyed a free tasting of several wines. The staff was fabulous, and I'm so glad that we found this winery. It has a very cute patio outside for lunch, and would love to go back the next time I'm in the area.
We stopped in at Herder Estates on the way home from a weekend winery getaway. WHAT A FIND! The place was stunning. We took a tour which we lucked into, because there was a large function that day. The tour guide Bev, squeezed us in before giving the large group their tour. She was funny, informative, and was very interesting... more
Stopped at Hernder on our way through St Catherines this afternoon. We had been there during the Ice Wine Festival in 2010 but thought we would stop by for a quick tasting.
The staff was friendly and imformative. Different types of wines available and we brought home a Rhubarb wine.
Would recommend stopping by for a tasting..you might just find...

This was hands-down our FAVOURITE winery (out of 8) on our trip through wine country. Unfortunately, it was also our first stop and it set us up for a little disappointment down the road. :(
Bev led us through the buildings and educated us on the history of the property, the history of the proprietors, and on the process of wine making while providing us with very generously poured tastings....

Made us feel welcome and the tastings are free!!!!! (They did... more

This is the winery out of the many wineries in Ontario you just shouldn't pass by.
