Three floors with a huge patio open 365 days a year with a lively atmosphere, 24 beers on tap and a reasonably priced menu with lot's of great items.
History
Established in 1980
Opened in 1980 by Kiwi ex-pat Martin Mcskimming, Hemingway's has become a Yorkville institution by providing great food and drink at great value for 31 years. I
Certainly one of Yorkville's most popular destinations. Hemingway's features a large heated patio that's great for looking down on the goings-on along Cumberland Street. You'll find Australian and basic “bar cuisineâ€, in short a good place for a few drinks after work or skipping-off during work, the high vantage point will let you spot the ... more
Hemingways is has over 28 years of proud heritage in prestigious Yorkville village. Enjoy over 20 types of draft beer on our rooftop patio, misted in the summer, and heated in the winter. Hemingways boast 3 bars on four floors for you dining enjoyment. We are open every night for diner until 2am and lunches Monday to Friday starting at 11am. Or join us for brunch on Sat, Sun, and holidays.
They have one of the best patios in the city! Love the food too, very affordable and huge drink selection. Gets very busy, especially during dinner and on sunny days.
A Yorkville staple, it can get rocking on the weekends (upstairs), but is also great for appetizers after work. Try the sweet potato fries, but maybe not the deep-fried shrimp. Reasonably priced for Yorkville
This place has a great patio and decent food. The prices are reasonable for Yorkville and it's always busy. Great place in the summer.
Depending on where you work of course this place seems to be a favorite of Yorkville residents. Its not the best place for dining but certainly one of the best for social drinks. Hemmy's has 4 floors all which have patios that can be covered and heated in the winter. During the summer they have this misting system to cool patrons off without soaking everyone. It usually takes a while to get a drink as its always jam packed but has such a great atmosphere its always worth it!
Laid back, easy going attitude reigns at Yorkville's dive. Its mainstay is its rooftop patio home to lots o' beer, sticky floors, plastic patio chairs. With no room to move around the bar, mingle your way around big buck business crowd and down to earth celebs without the pretension. Colin Farrell sightings have been known. In the winter, warm up in dim lighting and what looks like 80s cabin... more
Hemingway's rooftop patio (heated in the winter, and cool misted in the summer) is a popular Yorkville spot to meet for drinks after work. The restaurant downstairs also offers upscale bar fair at decent prices and generous portions.
I would give 4/5 based on the fact that they had an awesome misting system that helped on a very hot day.
Drink prices were average.
My friend had the pad Thai which was great. I had the special (catfish) which was average. Service was 4/5.
Only went there for drinks but they service was amazing. Laura was a great server and bartender. Very attentive even though the were slammed. I never say with an empty glass. Best service I had the entire trip to Toronto. Well worth the hike up to Yorkville.
High expectations, massive disappointment. C'mon it's Yorkville. Atmosphere was great, nice patios all levels. I got some pasta that looked terrible, felt like they threw something together quick time since it took so long. Guess it was party my fault, if I truly wanted pasta, shoulda went next door to Dimmi... more
I've been here a couple times now, most recently on a Sunday afternoon and then on a Friday night. On the Sunday, I just got drinks and the service was great, very friendly but not overbearing. The next time I was there on Friday night a week or two later, of course it was busier so we had to wait. It was not too long of a wait (about 20-25 minutes) and they texted us to let us know our table... more
I come here a lot. It's the most casual, chill and reasonably priced place in Yorkville. The drinks are reasonable and good. The menu is diverse and very good quality. The service is usually very good, but it gets packed so sometimes it's hard to get someone's attention. Very good value for prices. It's definitely one of my favourite spots.
Very nice ambiance! We went to the top of the roof top bar and had the perfect weather for it. There was a very nice selection of beers to choose from and there were several TVs easily seen from all of the tables playing the NBA finals.
We ordered some food because we had just arrived in town and were very hungry and didn't want to venture too far from our hotel. I was quite worried based on...

Great spot to go for a drink with the boys! The food was amazing, and the service was as great as the atmosphere. I'd highly recommend!
I spent the evening at Hemingway's Restaurant with a group of friends. Right off the bat, let me say that this was primarily a casual night out with friends, with a fair amount of drinking, so I'll differ the food review until next time.
Hemingway's is a pretty cool pub, with several floors, and great staff. Our drink of choice for the night was Brickworks Cider. I love cider. The only thing...

I'm the kind of person who will eat every last bite on my plate, even if it's just a garnish. So it's no small thing when I say that I left a good portion of my meal at Hemingway's uneaten.
We arrived at around 11:30 to sample the joint's brunch menu. They had all the usual things but they also had something called a New Zealand Bacon & Egg Pie (bacon, eggs, grated onion and green peas, baked...

The food is ridiculously good! The alcohol is also reasonably cheap compared to other places in Toronto. This place has a nice classy feel to it. Most of the guys have suits on. Just to note, the short blonde waitress behind the bar, has one of the greatest A@!%S I've seen in a long time. She is drop dead gorgeous. You gotta see this girl. She is about 5'1 and has short blonde hair. She is one... more
Ahhh, Hemingway's. What to say, what to say. I go here about 10x a year. I work across the street. It serves as a standby for coworker lunches, after-work drinks and the occasional take out lunch (I like to take out from here in those -20+ temps b/c then I don't have to go far).
I have tried many of the menu items, but as of late, I only ever order the clubhouse sandwich with a side caesar. I...

It was our first time in Canada and we decided to explore and walk around the city. We came upon this cool place by chance because the restaurant next door did not have any open tables. This place is four levels high including a popular patio. The food was great, I had their turkey burger and local Mill St. Organic beer. This occurred during the women's soccer world cup so they had the games on... more
I'll keep it short: nice cocktails, great atmosphere and location. Service was fast, too. Don't order food unless you're really hungry - nothing of what we tried tasted good.
I'd come here for drinks.
The only thing that is a positive for this place is that it is huge. There is a small patio out in front but a really big one upstairs. Unfortunately to get upstairs you have to walk by a smell that you really can't put your finger on...until you are halfway up the stairs and realize it's a faint urine kinda smell.
This place gets pretty packed - it's open until 2am and really is the only...

Fabulous top deck patio. Never disappoints! Always busy winter summer no matter.
I always love coming here with my best friend people watch. The bar is great staff are friendly.
And I especially love the owner, Martin.
If you're looking for something casual amongst all the upscale restaurants in the Yorkville area, this place is your jam.
If I'm on a mission to sit on the patio, I typically call for a reservation because no matter day/season/time this place is always busy.
There's nothing spectacular about this place - standard drinks, food, dessert. I've had the sweet potato fries, calamari and grilled...

In an area filled with expensive restaurants and high end stores sits Hemingways, a casual four storey resto with enough patio space to handle pretty much any event. Whether it's celebrating a birthday or enjoying an after work drink, this place has you covered.
They have a pretty extensive drink menu which includes beers, wines and cocktails has a little something for everyone - definitely...

This was my second visit to Hemingway's. Both times I was only there for a drinks.
This time my date ordered a pitcher of Grapefruit Radler for us. Personally into lighter beers and pale ales and this beer was delicious! Like 75% grapefruit juice haha. Absolutely delicious!
The service was nice but they didn't come by frequently. Not that we were in need of frequent attention but the table...

This is sucha convenient, laid-back and strategically pub located in the heart of Yorkville. Whilst other restaurants and pubs are a little more upscale in environment, Hemingway's remind me of a good ol' Aussie pub.
Food is actually not to bad considering its pub food. Love their Jambalaya and sweet chilli chicken flat bread pizza.
Its always been my go to pub and they have a great variety of...

This place is a laid back pub surrounded by trendy bars in the fashionable Yorkville neighbourhood. It's sort of a refreshing change. The atmosphere is very nice. There are serveral sections to the pub, but the heart of it is the large rooftop patio. It's always buzzing with activity.
The food is just your standard pub fair. Don't expect fine dining. You come here for the cold beer, and the...

I ate here during a recent trip to Toronto, with friends who were local to the area.We sat outside, which was delightful and very atmospheric. I ordered potato wedges with cheese and bacon. When they arrived, they weren't that hot (or fresh) but they were at least edible. The problems came when we wanted to pay. It was quite busy... more
Went here for lunch on my first day in Toronto. It had great outdoor seating, but that was about the only good thing about it. The food was lousy, and the service was terrible. The water cups were more like dixie cups, and the waitress looked like you had asked her for a limb when requesting a re-fill. Simple things... more
Nestled in Yorkville, Hemingway's is a great place to hangout with friends & enjoy good pub food. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to go to a posh area within downtown Toronto & not have to spend too much, to enjoy pub food in a trendy area.
We went to this place for friday lunch. It has a great food with apetizers, salads, pastas and meats, including a perfect (and big) fish and chips! The whole place, but in particular the patio, have a great atmosphere, making you forget you are in downtown. Service good and fast and an excellent selection of beers!
Great atmosphere! Open rooftop. Wonderful Haddock and Chips hiding on the snack menu. Very good service and wonderful selection of beers.
Ate there 2 days ago and had a hair in my food. They took it back and re-cooked me a burger. At the end I asked what they were going to do for my inconvenience and all they gave me was 1 soda ($2.90 off my bill). I told the manager that was a disgrace and he didn't care because... more
We went to this bar to watch the Netherlands/Argentina game. It was busy, and the televisions aren't well-placed, so the only place we could get a table with a view of the game was on the very top level patio. The television up there was ridiculously small for such a large space. We had to squint to see the ball.... more
I have never had a visit to Hemingway's which I did not enjoy. Of course the upstairs patio is great in the summer season. But the mid-level bar is cozy and welcoming too and so are the downstairs bar and front street seats from where you can watch the passers-by and Yorkville traffic. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and... more
Hemingway's is what one would call your "pub away from home." We all have those spots in our hometown where everyone goes and feels comfortable. It's not over the top and it's not a dive, it just is. We discovered this pub on Cumberland Street in Yorkville and liked it right away. It's a gem for everyone that is visiting,... more
I absolutely love this place. From the warm and welcoming servers to the great food to an awesome selection of taps. Never really there for any food, but when I do have some, its usually finger foods which are on point. But the true star for this place is the patio. I often go to Hemingway’s for lunch and always stick with my basic favorite burger fries (Best in town). The burgers are thick and juicy and the fries are golden crisp and fantastic. Came with a large group which means that 17% service charge is added on. Don't hold out for even the basic level of service. I’ve been going to this bar since 1998 and I always experienced great service, food and drinks. The setting is one of the best ones (trendy neighbourhood, large patios, tucked away from busy downtown streets, right across from the subway station and less than a minute walk from the public parking). What more could you ask for?

Not a bad place to grab a drink. Food isn't particularly great but price is reasonable compared to other places in the area. Patio is nice and always busy with friendly people.
My women colleagues, some retired, get together about six times a year at various places in Toronto. This was an excellent choice for a rooftop patio and a variety of salads which most of us shared. The waitress was kind enough to bring an extra set of plates so we could share the salads easily. They were all delicious and... more
While visiting Hogtown, we decided to visit an old watering hole and were very pleased. The quality and charm were still there. What works for them is a clean pub and a great patio, and attractive staff. I wouldn't consider this to be a restaurant that's all about service or really prides itself on its service standards. I like this place. I have met plenty of funny people here.

We've been to Hemingway's three times now so I feel fairly confident in my review. All 3 times were weekend afternoons. The atmosphere is interesting and lively.

The selection of food is okay. Varies a lot...

I had a great night here, my husband and I enjoyed some pasta as well as a great steak, our server helped us pair our meal nicely with some wine that they have by the glass, it was great. It does get a bit loud up there but we did not mind. We could still talk and enjoy ourselves.
Located in the heart of Yorkville, Hemingway's is the perfect spot to enjoy a great meal and a drinks with friends. The heated patio is open year-round. Was recommended to try here from Scottish friends. Had dinner twice in open air patio. Great location and brilliant atmosphere. Very noisy with young professional types. Food was ok. This is definitely not a fine dining venue but a great place to come with friends with a great vibe to it.
Great atmosphere, cool retractable roof, and good wait-staff.
We had a group of 12, and we were well looked after. I had the Steak, and it was average. It was what I expected, so I really wasn't disappointed. I just had a craving!
There is a smoking area on the 2nd floor as well...kinda handy, if you are a smoker....

Visited on a sunny Sunday for lunch. Got a table in the front patio, part sun and shade, just what we asked for. Staff were pleasant and quick. This restaurant has been around for many years and that alone says a lot in this trendy neighborhood! Food prices are reasonable, and food is good!
went here for some late drinks on a Friday night. Really crowded and noisy. Downstairs was live music so it was REALLY loud. Upstairs was super crowded. Hard to get to the bar for a drink.
Did not have any food. Just drinks. Young crowd
The wait staff is always outstanding, and after 10pm til 2am the bar menu is loaded with all the old favorites. Not too pricey and nice portions. My wife and I love this place whenever we're in TO. I usually sit at the bar but the restaurant in back on two floors is great. Upstairs back deck is partially enclosed if weather a bit iffy. Friendly staff. I
Hemingway’s is a “Patio bar” where my bud and I started our bar crawl. We enjoyed some local brews from the Mill Street Brewery and a Med platter with a great selections of dips, olives, pita, etc served by our lovely green eyed waitress.
We often go to Hemingway's and the rooftop patio is a great place in the summer. Service is always quick and friendly, food is a reasonable price. Menu typically pub style with some original additions. Great location and alternative to the overpriced venues in Yorkville.
Go to Hemingways alone or with friends if you want to have a laid back beer or cocktail. The waiters are down to earth and attentive and there are always interesting people that hangout there. Hemingway's (Hide Away) is a staple to the Yorkville scene and indeed you could walk past it for years, seeing its narrow interior bar & restaurant as a representation of all that it has to offer. I came here with a group that wanted to eat without trooping about in search of an interesting restaurant. The menu ranges from Seafood Fettuccini to Mediterranean Curry to Pad Thai--no real specialization. If you come here, the Seafood Fettuccini is probably the best (least bland, freshest, tastiest) choice. The prices are fair, service is fine, and atmosphere bright.
Hemingway's nestled in the heart of Toronto's Yorkville district, is always a lively and fun place to spend the evening. While the downstairs features a small-ish bar and seating area, the upstairs patios (multiple levels), are very casual and university-feeling. I love this place and frequent here regularly. It's always a great and might I add down to earth atmosphere! Pretty decent bar food too. But the best part about this place is the many patios and the friendly service which cannot be said about some of the other bars in the area.
This is a pub/restaurant that has been around for a very long time. It's luck and advantage is that it is located in the heart of a trendy, busy neighbourhood. Food is just ok. Rooftop is fun for beers and snacks in the summer. The street level area is ok for people watching but they don't wash the sidewalk after garbage pick up so it smells. Fajitas are good and pizza is good for sharing.
The terraces are great for a quick lunch outside on a hot summer day. Service is good, food's decent (simple but tastedul) and they serve a wider variety of beers on tab. Happy to return next summer
Went there with work associates for dinner without clients. The rooftop was inviting and enjoyable to hang out. The food is average bar food. Nothing special. Over the years this place was always somewhat able to re-invent itself, but bad service and not enough of good choice of beer, this place has finally graduated to a sophmoric college pub. A nice and friendly place to get an affordable meal. The salads were great, interesting and filling. Lots of choice if you like a cold beer on a hot day. This is a pub so casual is the dress code. This is a trendy gathering place in the evening in downtown Toronto

My favorite place in Yorkville. Great patio out front and upstairs.
Right in the heart of Yorkville, definitely one of my favourite places to grab a pint! Huge patio too!
The stars are not working well- I would give it a four/5. Great drinks, a nice airy atmosphere,an excellent curry- if ya'll can take the heat! NOT pretentious, considering where it is located...great for people watching! It is a true mixing pot of dress and casual attire...any day of the week. Good brunch spot too!
Hemingway's has an amazing rooftop patio situated in the heart of Yorkville. Surprisingly, the beers are cheap (great draft choices) and the staff is friendly. No Yorkville airs here! ok, I didn't have food, but we did have pints on the rooftop patio. Very nice up there, and they even have a mister to cool you off on humid days. The food looked very good, and the staff was extra friendly. Hotsauce even scored me a free kiwi t shirt :)

Favorite Dish: Guinness!
This place has 3 levels (get ready to climb some stairs). Second one has a large balcony with heaters (that they can't seem to turn down...only on or off, much to my group's chagrin). Third floor is another balcony (BTW, waitresses up there had lilty Irish accents...ahhhh) that has good temp.
