Great Meal!

We ate here a couple of weeks ago and it was an excellent experience all around. The food was great and the atmosphere was just what we were after!

WOW! Awesome!!!

Me and my wife went here last night - early reservation for 6pm...they had no record of our reservation which may have been a problem if we hadn't arrived before the place got crowded. That was the only fault with the place.
The restaurant was awesome - looks amazing from the bar right on into the dining rooms. We started off with a few drinks from the bar. I was suprised at no choices on tap but they had anything you wanted in a can or bottle - I went with a Guinness and wife had a couple of Caesars. She likes them extra spicy and she said it was the best she has ever ordered. I had seafood chowder and wife had the butternut squash soup with partridge berry coulis....both were great starters. For her entree, wife had almond-crusted pork tenderloin on a mushroom risotto and I had the 8oz strip (rare) with roasted potatoes and asparagus - and of course a glass of red! This was probably the best steak I have ever ordered in a restaurant - far above the Keg steak I ordered about a week or so ago (and reviewed on Weblocal). Dessert proved to be equally as good with wife ordering the Creme Brulee and myself choosing the warm partridge berry and orange bread pudding with caramel sauce. Total for two of us before tip was $144.

This place is definitely now my new favorite spot. I hope it isn`t too long before going back.

Makes Top 10 list

Another amazing restaurant transformation in 2009 was the unveiling of the new Gypsy Tea Room in the Murray Premises. It's about five times its original size with space for approximately 200 diners. A good place to begin your evening might be the handsome bar directly off Water Street that stores dozens of bottles of quality wines. Seafood is a sure bet. "Tilapia is a sweet thin white-fleshed fish. Chef Bruce Brookings prepared it with a slightly crispy coating and wrapped around a mix of bread and sausage. I enjoyed it very much. The stuffing wasn't too overpowering, allowing the subtle flavour of the tilapia to come through."

Came to enjoy a nice business dinner here with some customers while in St John's.
The place has a nice eclectic feel to it and a very diverse tasty menu. There are some meals where to "geek out" and take photos of your meal is inappropriate and this was the occasion with these important clients.

I had selected the dynamite calamari as an appetizer which came out nice and crusty with tentacles... more

Went there for diner and it was just ok. Very nice place. That is what got me in there but the food would keep me away. I had the scallop and had to send them back. They were cold. Next time around they were the same but just gave up and eat them. Then I had the steak. That was good but the crab rice was sad. Not a good match for both. Service was soso. Hard lessons learned at the gypsy tea room: the 'special of the day' doesn't necessarily mean the food will be all *that* special, and don't forget to ask how much it costs before you order.

On vacation in St. Johns, I thought I would walk on the wild side, so to speak, and order the special of the day (I'm a yelper, after all, and I tend to side on the tried, true and reviewed menu items),... more

Pepper Crusted Pork was Pepper Crusted Fat

We've just returned from dinner at this restaurant and the meal was terrible. The Pepper-Crusted Pork, at $34.00, was so fatty it was inedible, particularly my wife's serving. Great place. I’ve been here numerous times these past few months and each visit has been great. The food and service has been consistently fabulous each time. My only complaint is the chicken satay was rather bland (sauce was amazing but I think they should have thought things through before paring it with basmati rice) They even have lots of cute male waiters. What more is there to love?

Great place for a nice dinner or just drinks and pub food. You can get a really good meal here or if you just want simple, at the bar they have the best nachos in the City!

By far one of the best places in the city. I have been a number of times over the past few years and have never been disappointed. Staff are very knowledgeable and friendly and the food is always delicious. I constantly recommend this place to people new to the city and have never heard a bad comment. My two favourite items on the menu are the beet salad and the cod with risotto. On my last... more

The food's pretty good here but not so good as to leave me gushing over it. It's probably in the top 5 of upscale joints in the city.

The decor is nice (downstairs is cozier) but there are a few things that can be problematic
- the front has a bar and tables. This can get quite noisy if you're seated upstairs
- there's always a lineup for the upstairs bathroom

I agree. Some of the waitresses/bartenders/whatevertheyares are highly pretentious. No need for the snobbery, girls!

I think they have great food, great service and a great atmosphere. I had the best Pasta ever at the Gypsy Tea Room. Ideal place to check out for lunch especially.

I phoned to make a reservation at the Gypsy Tea Room and was put on hold for 2 or 3 minutes. Then another person answered and put me on hold for another minute or two. Finally the phone was answered again and I was put on hold a third time. That’s when I finally hung up and made a reservation at another restaurant.

I’ve had two experiences with this restaurant. Both times the food was great, but not so for the service. The first time, I went for dinner and had a wonderful waiter. The second time was during brunch, when the restaurant was much busier. The guy serving us was cranky, forgot to come back for requested top ups on coffee, and left us waiting almost a half an hour for us to ask for either desert... more

I just moved here in January and my mom came from the mainland in early April for a visit. I had heard some good things about The Gypsy Tearoom so I figured I would take her there for dinner.
She ordered the caesar salad and seafood alfredo and I ordered the potato-leek soup and the striploin steak. We had a carafe of wine and mom also had an apple martini.

The Gypsy is great if you want to be social (be seen) but it ends there. Their new menu is somewhat comparable to Raymond’s (in content and price only). Our meal at Gypsy for two people cost $280 with tip/tax, I had a recent meal at Raymond’s that cost $300 BUT we had one extra appetizer, coffees and were given an amuse bouche and truffles for free. While prices were comparable,Raymond’s blew... more

OK - if you have ever thought about a Gypsy Tea Room - this is nothing like that! This is ultra modern deco - excellent paitings on darkened walls, exposed beams - and a kind of neon lighting - but I am not sure how/where.

The setting is modern and chic - very nice mix with the exposed brick fireplaces. We chose the dinning room at the back. Great feel - lots of room to share a four way... more

If I could give this place zero stars I would. I ate at the Gypsy Tea Room recently and had a completely terrible experience. The waiter brought me the wrong entree, and made no apologies, and furthermore told me that I didn’t order what I thought I ordered, and he was right. He never asked me how my meal was and it was actually really disgusting. Other people at my table got what they ordered... more

A good restaurant should be well rounded on both sides, the bar menu and the full menu. You shouldn’t have to sacrifice quality of food and miss out on what a restaurant can offer just because you are sitting on their bar side and “enjoying” a smaller menu. Appetizers can be one of the best parts of some restaurants, and unfortunately Gypsy is definitely lacking in this area.

I usually get on the Scope once a week or so to see what everyone is saying about the restaurants around town but have never left a review myself. Gypsy Tea Room, Water Street, St Johns Nfld

Interesting decor
Interesting menu
Chicken sandwich for lunch with the daily salad both were very good
Service was good but time for the meal to arrive, was close to 45 minutes from time of order. Not some place to go for lunch if time is an issue.

Food is not nearly as good as many other downtown restaurants within the same price range. My pasta was okay, I found it bland, waited forever to be served and for our meals, my husbands fish was undercooked, our bread was actually frozen, and had to be taken away to be heated, waited for cutlery and water much longer than was necessary, encountered quite a bit of snobbery on the part of the... more

Awful. Absolutely Awful. I made a reservation a week in advance and they stuck us, a table of two, in between two large tables of 12 and 15 in the middle of the dining room. They then ignored us for a good fifteen minutes. The server eventually decided we were worth waiting on. The food took almost an hour, and it wasn’t good. The pork was over cooked, the chicken tasted like it was out of a... more

Best meal ever last Friday night. The appetizers were perfect, scallops for me and lamb chops for my partner. The presentation was worth a picture - which I didn't take!

Since we like dinner to last a while, we have learned to order the main course after the appetizer. In this instance the main course was well worth waiting for. We switched it up. I had the lamb chops, she had the fish... more

Very nice place, stone and brick mixed on the walls. Nice wine room and blue lighting. We had amazing meals - and both were off the pub menu! We had a 1/2 pound angus burger which was one of the tastiest I've ever had. The other meal was fish and chip - again, amazingly fresh. We will be back!

Great spot. Emir, the owner, is a very personable guy. He warmly welcomes one and all.

Brenna K. is spot-on about the toilet problem. If nature calls, you may find yourself in a queue. I wonder if that can be sorted out somehow? Toilets downstairs, perhaps?

Will never darken their door again. My salmon arrived cold so they microwaved it. Some of the girls that work their seem to think they are doing you a favour by seating you. I have given this place five chances and only had one good experience. Not worth it.

I agree, I was there once and it was enough, poor food, our white wine was warm, and we did not get what we ordered and when we tried to see the owner he was too busy in the bar moving from table to table with a beer bottle in his hand.
They have a lot to learn if they want to be a good restaurant

We went here for New Year’s 2008. The food was decent — the scallops I had were nicely roasted just right, and the duck leg confit was very tasty, with a perfect mix of crunchiness and flavourful fig gravy. Our desserts were just barely acceptable, with a mostly granola crumble and a much too rich Bailey’s chocolate torte which tasted not a bit like Bailey’s.
