Very beautiful restaurant, excellent service, yummy food. A bit expensive, but if you want to go somewhere downtown this is the place.
I usually get my Chinese from either Look HoHo or Jeans but because The Coast Magazine voted The Great Wall best Chinese food for 15 years in a row I thought they must be good. Nope. I called from home and asked for delivery. I called at 5:15. They told me within the hour I could expect the food. 6:15... more
My review of this Chinese restaurant , In one word its bland, you listen to the reviews and you can't wait to visit, the chicken balls you could use for tennis balls, you need a steak knife to cut them, the rest of the food not that good, this isn't the best Chinese restaurant in Halifax.
We ate here twice this past week - with actual chinese people. We found some dishes to be over-seasoned while others lacked flavor. Beef with broccoli was good. Singapore noodles is overpriced. Fast service though.
This restaurant is hidden on the street right behind the waterfront. It provides great Chinese food, great dim sum. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Appropriate for families, large groups, and individuals.
My wife and I went for supper and had the Combo #6. Sweet & Sour chicken with Almond Guy Ding. The rice was awful. It had so much sot sauce in it that was all you tasted. The chicken balls were really deep fried dough balls with a tiny bit of chicken. The baby corn in the vegetables came out... more
The Great Wall is an excellent place to go for lunch. The food is delicious, the service is fast and the prices are great value for money. . The staff is also very friendly.
The Great Wall Restaurant is a basic Chinese restaurant. Basic, but nicely done decor, friendly staff, reasonable service, convenient location and open a good range of hours.
Sadly, I thought prices were quite high for the small portions. Food though was good and hot, nothing spectacular in flavour, but decent "hit the spot" fare all the same.
Tip:

My co-workers and I eat here frequently. The staff is friendly, the food is plentiful and the prices are very reasonable. The service is fast and there is a take out option too. Patrick (owner) quickly fills your glass with ice water and is always around making sure you are topped up. There's no expectation to order a drink, most... more
Fast service, great prices, good food, and great take out for dinner on the run. Often get their lunches at its convenient spot downtown and like their choices for take out dinner.
My wife and I ate at the Great Wall last Sunday eve. We had shrimp fried rice ( poor quality ) and deep fried shrimp( fair at best). The service was poor ( did not come to our table once during the meal) and they did not have any coffee brewing after our meal. The good quality was not great... more
We just had lunch here today and were very impressed. I recently moved to Halifax from Ontario and had researched where to go for good Chinese food. The Great Wall came up, hands down. The service, by Lindsey, was excellent. She was welcoming, friendly and accommodating. We both had won ton soup - very tasty. We also had Chang Po... more
The food was short in taste, to much in grease and its delivery was far beyond the promised time. And there was no apology for the last.
I heard about the Great Wall long before trying it, and it sure lives up to its reputation as some of the best food around. It gets quite busy at lunch but the wait staff handles the crowd with ease and are happy to recommend options if you don't know what to get. Big round tables seat up to eight... more
We had plans to eat at another restaurant on New Year's Day, but upon our arrival they were closed. We remembered we had eaten here a few years ago and I called them to make sure they were open. They were.
We parked right in front of the restaurant which was nice. Walking in was warm and inviting, we were...

The Great Wall is as authentic as most westerners could handle. When we arrived for Sunday Brunch there were no forks or knives on the table and no English on the menu. The dining room was filled with members of the local Asian community and the atmosphere reminded me of a Chinatown scene from an action film.
My embarrassment over...

Definitely my favourite place to get Chinese in Halifax. The menu has both Szechuan and more "North American" style Chinese. The crispy ginger beef is delicious and not to be missed, as is the salt and pepper squid. The owner Patrick is very friendly and will always come over to your table to say hello and check in on your... more
It is good Chinese food. I stop here often because it is fast and a great value for the portion of food. It is located downtown Halifax convenient to most hotels. I have been invited to this restaurant while on business in Halifax so it is a popular local spot.
I never had such a bad experience. Food was just warmed up and i had the impression of something re-heated. I can't believe that this is a good place like others wroted. Use to eat chinese in every city i visit but this was not even food! We left the "restaurant" after the first mouthful.
This was voted #1 by the Coast newspaper while we were in town so we thought that we tried it out. We were not disappointed. The food was very good and reasonably priced.
This is a Halufax landmark and I have eaten here many times but its been a long time since I have been back .Went tonight with my husband and we jjust loved it. The Cantanese chow mien was great...fresh scallops, shrimp ,chicken and squid ,a huge delicious serving. The Hunan chicken was our favorite. It's served on a hot tray... more
great meal, have to go back soon and try more you dont get to experience a lot when just on a lunch break but this place has a great menu and was glad I was recommended to go there
The Great Wall has some really good dishes, the egg roles are to die for.
The Spring Rolls not so much.
The fried rice is a disappointment it always has a "propane" flavor from sitting in the warming trays too long.
Despite those provisos it is one of our favorite restaurants.
We stop by for Dimsum any time that we are in Halifax, it can't be beat! Also they have two menus one for regular typical Maritime style "chinese" with chicken balls and whatnot and one with authentic chinese style cuisine.
I used to work just around the corner from Great Wall and it was always and easy spot to grab a bite for a reasonable price. My personal favorite for lunch was two spring rolls, which cost less than $6 (tax and tip included). I've also had a couple of the combination plates. The interior of the restaurant is worn... more
The Great Wall regularly wins the best DIm Sum on the annual "Best Of Halifax" public voting, but on a recent visit we were not really impressed. Our table of four had a variety of 7 or 8 selections, but they mostly failed to excite our taste buds. Indeed, to a certain extent it was hard to tell some of... more
There's a reason why this place is known for having the best Dim Sum in town. The food is amazing! We make a point of coming here whenever we're in Halifax. Sunday morning Dim Sun starts at 11:30.
This reveiw is based on only one dish that I ate at this restaurant, their "salt & pepper squid". It was excellent! Probably the second best that I have ever had. The best being at a restaurant in London England, whose name excapse me.
This was not the first choice of our group of four. For one reason or another, we ended up eating there. I was told that this was a great place to get Chinese food and I do enjoy good Chinese Food, but I have never tried it.
When we walked in, the place did not look like anything special, but...

I am picky when it comes to Chinese restaurants, but The Great Wall in Halifax is the best I tried in a long time. The food is good, the staff is quick and helpful, the prices are right and the place is clean, including the washroom which I found Spotless.
I will go again!
Tried the Great Wall on one of our first nights here in Halifax, and we will definetly go back. While the service was a little slow, the food was delicious. Although served family style, which we are not used to, we enjoyed our visit there. Have a small childrens menu and vegetables are not steamed enough for fussy eaters, but... more
This was our second time here for Dim Sum on Sunday morning. We’re from Moncton, NB and we don’t have anything that compares here. The food is delicious, fresh and very filling. A little expensive, but it’s such an experience!
Wow! What a find! Drove past in on our way from work and decided to try it.
Im so glad we did!! The place is great, food is amazing, atmosphere and service also extremely good!
Best Dim Sum i have tasted outside of China!
Excellent food. Period! I have visited places all over North America for over 24 years and this restaurant tastes GREAT! The veggies were a la Dante, the meat fresh, and cooked moist, and the drinks were cold!
We had never eaten at this place at all until last week. It came rated pretty good on this site and in some Halifax dining guide. The decore is old and worn but don't let that fool you. As any downtown Halifax building they are all old almost historical. The food was excellant!!! We just had some basic combos Chicken... more
Patrick is the consumate host at Great Wall. He is eager to make your meal a great experience all around. Sunday dim sum is crowded, but very authentic to what you would find in Hong Kong. Great Wall also does some nice Cantonese, Hunan and Sichuan dishes. The hot and sour soup is the best we have eaten in town.
A really popular Chinese food place for a reason. Good food and good prices. I've been going there for years and the place is consistently good.
I am very picky when it comes to dim sum as I frequently travel to Hong Kong. I've tried all the dim sum joints in Halifax and although none of them aren't up to my high standards - I must say the dim sum at Great Wall is quite good compared to the rest. It is voted #1 for every... more
My family and I are from Hong Kong and this was our first visit to this restaurant. We heard that they served Dim Sum on Sundays and we were really craving for it. Not particularly authentic, but definitely tasty, and portions are a reasonable size. It has remained good for the past 10 years.
Having lived in China for 2 years, I can tell you it's hard to get the same here (Western world) as you get in China.
The food is decent, the price is good and the service is good.
Wonderful food; ginger beef was perfect and salt and pepper chicken (which is not on the menu but was recommended by our server was fantastic!
All the dishes were great quanities with fresh vegetables
Best place in Halifax - hands down! Looks like a little hole in the wall, but has the best food in town. Everything is delicious, and the owners are always around ensuring that you like everything.
It's hard to find a real good Chinese restaurant in Halifax.
It was a nice surprise to find good dim sum on our vacation. Great service and food. Really liked this little place.
The menu is fairly limited in terms of the steamed style dim sum that most decent places serve. The food is greasy and stodgy, not the light parcels that I would associate with this cuisine.
If you are with anyone who doesn't eat meat then definitely give this place a miss. Its hard to choose items that are veg or...

My husband and I tried this Great Wall because it was rated as the best Chinese restaurant in theCoast for the last 4 years. The food was good but not the best Chinese food in HRM, there are others. We ordered an assorted number of items and nothing was memorable. Just average.
Wonderful atmosphere and great food. Kids loved it too, but not neccessarily a "family restaurant".
This is a regular place for me for Chinese food. Their selection is great and their food is the best in the cities, as far as I'm concerned.
First time here, excellent Chinese food and fast service. We had combination plates and the chow mien was really good, as well as the rice and chicken. Next time, we would like to try the dim sum. The restrooms were sparkling clean too, a nice feature :)
Occasionally we order Great Wall takeout for lunches at work, and the service is always speedy (usually under 10 minutes). I've tried a few different combos, but really enjoy the shredded Szechuan beef -- it's spicy, but you can cool your tastebuds with one of their awesome egg rolls -- the best I've had in the city. The prices are a little higher than similar restaurants, and on the one... more
Out of all the Chinese food restaurants in Halifax, the Great Wall restaurant is my favorite. I especially like their hot-and-sour soup, the spicy squid, and dim sum. Don't forget to ask for a pot of Jasmine tea while you're at it.
I've never been disappointed with the food at the Great Wall. Their spicy beef in particular has been some of the best I've had, and I highly recommend you try this dish out if you don't order one of their combo plates. Ambiance wise, this restaurant has a very old school, stereotypical 80s Chinese restaurant look. Service has been hit and miss, from servers who were excellent to ones who I... more
I've tried a few things here and they have not let me down. The food is good, they deliver, and staff is nice from my experiences. I really like their spring rolls. Give them a try if you've never eaten there.
I agree that the Great Wall Restaurant Dim Sum is one the best in Halifax. But regular meal is just OK.
no music, no atmosphere, had to wave to get our servers' (we had several) attention each time we wanted something.
I have tried all the Chinese restaurants in Halifax which offer dim sum on week ends. Great wall is the best one among them. It provides a variety of choices on dim sum, also the taste is good. Of course, can not compare with the ones in Toronto. But I'd say it is the best in Halifax. They are quite busy on Sunday, since it is the only day they offer dim sum.
if you are a big fan of dim sim,you should definetly try it out.The food is delicate and tastful..above all, that's what you can expect at a local restaurant in Hong Kong.
Reasonable prices and really really good Chinese food.
Spicy but yet sweet the best ginger beef I’ve tasted!
Amazing spring rolls, large, crispy and yummy insides
A mild but still good dish
About the same as at any other Chinese restaurant, which is a bit of a disappointment I expected more from the great wall. Pretty bland.
Good chicken balls. Its worth it to pay the extra $.40 to add...

awsome chinese in a friendly environment... fast service and great prices... well worth stopping in!
I like the dim sum at this restaurant. Althought the price is alittle high, the quality does cover it.

I will never step foot into this restaurant. We saw mice running in the dining area.
