It is no longer the best sushi in town, and neither is the service. I have long been a customer, but found the sushi was not always made fresh and took 45 minutes to deliver on quiet days. It is very expensive and there are many other choices in Barrie. Unfortunately they no longer my favourite.
This place is now permanently closed.
It's too bad as it was a great place to stop when driving through Barrie.
Waitress sat at next table and ate her super after seating me. Then served other tables back and forth avoiding eye contact and eventually came by to take my drink order after i shouted excuse me while she was rushing by. Then i had to ask someone who brought my entre if i will be getting my appetizer.
Yikes, beware.!
Had sushi dinner at Furusato, the sushi was really fresh and delicious and large portions. Overall good experience and great food at furusato, will eat again!
We, me and my husband, went there for a late dinner around 8 p.m (not too late!!), had to wait around 15 minutes before anyone came over to take our orders, that too after waving at the counter like every 3 minutes ! ! We ordered the bento box which states it includes miso soup, salads and dessert. The soups... more
I love love love their bento box lunch. Always fresh, great miso soup and tempura. They even have private booths for a more authentic Japanese experience.
We tried to eat dinner again at Furusato on Tuesday evening... We were sat in a near empty restaurant, there was one other table of 4 and one gentleman at the sushi bar. We immediately were seated , provided menus and then completely ignored for over 10 minutes. The server got tied up with dealing with the chefs ad then... more
I was surprised that there was a sushi restaurant right off the highway on our way home back to the states--and in Barrie, Ontario.
Regardless, my husband and I ordered the sushi/sashimi/maki boat and was greeted with 40+ pieces of tasty fare. Their white tuna was very fresh and tasted excellent. The salmon was also fresh and our fav (and was mostly what they had on the plate) as well. We...

You have to wait to be seated...once you are seated you have to wait for somebody to give you a menu....wait for your order to be taken...wait for your food to arrive..wait for your drink orders...this is when there were only 3 other tables that were occupied...it took forever for the bill to arrive...a horrible experience !
Food is good a fresh, nice presentation. Waitresses barely understand English. The wallpaper is stained and dirty, floors look like they haven't been washed in a month. Bathrooms are dirty with a bad odour. Staff are friendly.
The chicken-udon soup was tasteless and realchickenless, the sushis we received weren't even close to what we ordered and the service was apathetic. Deceptions were one after the other and the price paid was one of them. There are a lot of good sushi restaurants, Japanese restaurants, whatever restaurants in this world and just as many reasons NOT to go... more
The decor may be a little dated but don't let that fool you from the freshness of the food. The portions were substantial. We had the MAKI Bento Box combo and the Kate sushi plate. Both were delicious. I would recommend this restaurant.
It's been 3 years since I've had time thru this area. Last time I stopped here the food was excellent and moderately priced.
Looks like things have not changed. I ordered the Sashimi Dinner and the Kamikaze roll (salmon and tuna).
To start of you get a decent miso soup and a small ginger salad. Not bad! Not bad at all! Hit the spot after my 3 hour drive from "The Gateway to the North".

I was in Barrie overnight and Furusato ended up being just down the road from my hotel. Having spent lots of time traveling (and eating) through Japan, I was skeptical, but when their menu had a donburi selection, I had to try it. It was fantastic. The donburi was completely authentic and the gyoza soup was too. The bar had... more
The food is great at Furusato. I used to find the service suspect but seems to have improved in recent months. The bento boxes are very good value. In the winter avoid sitting near the door as the restaurant can be a little drafty.
A Bento Box lunch will provide all you can eat.
The service is friendly and the food represents good value.
Freshly prepared with a little acceptable wait.
Went to Furusato Japan Restaurant yesterday...the new management changed exactly the reason why it WAS my favorite restaurant around...it doesn't go the distance (not that much of a distance) to please the clients as it used to do. Not worth going anymore. Very bad service, the waitress was totally not trained, in a hurry (the place was empty) and when... more
Awesome atmosphere, service is top notch. Servers are dressed in authentic, Japanese attire, Kimono's etc.
you can dine in a private room with cushions. You remove your shoes and sit, the floor drops out, so it's like you're sitting on the floor without the discomfort. Sushi is top notch, to die for. Highly recommended, very clean, great food, great service!
Four of us stopped in to have a quick dinner. The staff was welcoming and very accommodating to the needs of the group. The food was ok. The salmon on top of my roll was tough. I've never had that before, however, overall, the roll was good. The seafood soup was really fishy tasting. I should have gone with the... more
Everything about this place is fantastic. When you are looking for a great spider roll you can definitely find one here. Sashimi is great as well as the sushi and the rolls.
The service here is outstanding. The staff always remember us from previous visits and made us feel welcome on each return visit.
Sushi and Sashimi are done very well, however I recommend trying some of the Korean style menu items such as the ribs.
You won't be disappointed with this restaurant.
love the little booths and the the quality of food is always very high. If you like Sushi...I personally think it is the best in Barrie. You won't be disappointed.
Great food, extremely fresh beautifully presented, great value for your money, staff is very friendly and Anne (owner). Always walks around to make sure everything is ok. We go here all the time and have never been disappointed
Did I like my brown, week-old tuna being craftily covered up by some pretty spicy mayo? Not really. Am I enjoying feeling nauseous all day after eating it? Not so much. Thank you, however, for the 6 extra pieces of sashimi that I didn't order. They were lovely.
We went there for take out, the place is busy and there is only 2 servers in the place. It took awhile to place our order and also took awhile to get the order. They never let us check the food that we order before fully packing like the other people that order. And when we got back to our... more
Waitress was very friendly throughout the meal. Sushi was fresh, & prices reasonable.
Would visit again.
The food is amazing and the wait staff are very gracious!
Furusato's is our special place to go our for dinner. This is our "Date NIght" place as it is the perfect environment for sharing a bottle of wine and having a long chat about out week. You can either chose a table in the middle of the restaurant so that you can see what other people are ordering and see... more
This place is fairly average for a sushi place. No all you can eat, which means you at least get some good service, instead of being forgotten about. Staff is nice and friendly and the layout is nice enough. I know they have party areas with more authentic Japanese experience, but I haven't used that.
My biggest concern with this...

Quite impressed with their food, presentation and service. Well worth the visit.
During the past three years, I have eaten on at least 50 separate occasions at the Furusato Japanese Restaurant located 10 Fairview Road, Barrie, Ontario.
On numerous occasions, I have also entertained business associates, friends as well as my wife and children at this establishment. The Furusato Japanese Restaurant is very pleasant, clean and the service is friendly, quick and...

I had a craving so Sushi while on the highway and decided to call ahead for takeout. The lady promptly took my order and advised me that it would take 20-25 minutes because thy were busy.
When I got there they were just placing my salmon and dynamite rolls in a bag. All in all not bad... the rolls are fresh and tasty. My on;y major criticism would be that the rolls are huge.. make it difficult...

Three wrords, spicy tuna roll....
Yum!
A pretty good selection of the usual suspects: sushi, teriyaki, etc. It's a bit hit or miss. Tried the sashimi lunch box last time and it was decent. I recalled the first time I had some sort of salmon and the salmon did not taste fresh. Servers are polite and friendly.
Pick a booth with a floor-level table and a privacy screen - it feels cool! The staff is courteous and professional. The food is as good as any of the other Japanese restaurants around here.
Very Good Sushi, great atmosphere
