Fid is consistently rated as one of the best restaurants in Halifax, and for good reason. The chef uses fresh, local ingredients whenever possible, and their meals are slightly out of the ordinary, but not enough to turn picky eaters off.
Their lunch is very affordable ($8-12 mostly), and they put as much effort into those inexpensive meals as they do their dinner entrees.
Fid is a fantastic place and I hope to return again and again.

When we heard Fid was closing May 19, 2013, we thought we should give it a last visit. UNfortunately we think the staff's interests are already elsewhere. The server was unable to give information about entrees and apps. The protein portions were generally good but the veg was sloppy and overcooked. The one serving of tuna included some fish that... more
Excellent chef. Food always great - wonderful combinations. Wait staff can be a little snooty and cold. Don't really make you feel special. We went often anyway - for the delicious food.
Fid is simply outstanding in presenting the best locally sourced ingredients in the most elegant and enticing combinations. In my view, the best restaurant in Halifax.
Small menu but there is something for everyone. Happy I stumbled across this place. Definitely worth a try.
whatever you do skip the scallop appetizer. for eleven dollars what a rip off. You need a microscope to see it. the pad thai is good but then you can get that down the street at cha baa.
Recommended by our B&B and did not disappoint. A little off the beaten track but worth the effort of looking for it. Food was delicious and the service was quick, friendly and discrete.
Calling at the last minute, we were warmly welcomed and delighted with the menu and outstanding food. Service was personal and timely. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening
Great food, very friendly service, nice atmosphere. Bit difficult to find (on Dresden Row but hidden in a small shopping centre).
First rate dining experience. Incredible and creative dishes
And top notch service. One of the
Finest meals we have had in years. Wonderful
Experience!
Don't miss this gem of a restaurant
we read about the restaurant in the lonely planet guide and decided to go. Beautiful little restaurant and the food was excellent !!! We had some lobster poitine and beautiful scallops for starter to share and monkfish and seared tuna filet for main course - yummy !! and the chocolate cake desert was also delicious. Wine list was reasonable priced... more
Having been to Fid a few years ago, I was expecting great food and great service. I couldn't believe how poor the service was this time. The waitress/owner was just this side of rude. She basically ignored us for the most part - forgetting the wine, not checking to see if everything was fine. I ordered the flank steak (... more
What a wonderful meal! Rarely do you find a restaurant that takes such care in the quality and preparation of the food that they offer. Everything was fresh, flavourful and beautifully presented. I had the organic roasted chicken breast with potato gnocchi and fresh green peas in a light cream sauce. The memory of it will send me back again... more
Two members of my family and I stopped by Fid Restro for a meal one Saturday afternoon after visiting the farmers market. Initially, we were disappointed to learn that the brunch menu was all that was available. Then the food arrived. My burger and frites made for a fine plate. A cousin visiting from Kansas City had the massive sausage... more
On a side street from Spring Garden Hill somewhat tucked away you will have a first class dining experience that will not disappointing you!
The meal was excellent. Chirizo and octopus appetizers were excellent. Beef cheek entrae was rich and flavorful and the churro's were better than the churro's I sampled in Spain last week. The wait staff were ever attentive and didn't miss a beat.
It's been awhile, but I really enjoyed their pork. Also, loved the way they arranged the food.
Not particularly known for fine dining, Halifax shouldn’t let that stop them. We were hard pressed to find a good place to eat. The Halifax Seafood Market on the far right of the harbor (facing Darmouth) shows the promise of the area. Fresh vegetables, lots of crafted food at not bargain prices, but certainly worthy of a strolling lunch was... more
I was thoroughly impressed with Fid's. I have never seen so much creativity and thought go into food preparation....and I have eaten around and around the world. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. On top of that, it is great that the chef uses Local fare only. I had the beef cheek and that was tender and juicy. The... more
We went here for lunch after hearing good things about the restaurant. The place was smaller than I thought it would be, but the decor was nice and we were seated right by the window. I had the gnocci appetizer and it was delicious. The gnocci were handmade and was some of the best that I have eaten. It was... more
I was excited to try Fid after hearing so many great things so we booked it for my birthday dinner. Overall, the whole thing was really disappointing. Lackluster atmosphere, amateur service with little knowledge of the menu or ingredients, bland appetizer and overly salted main course. The spices that were used on the appetizer as well as those on my... more
I really enjoyed this restaurant. We were able to get in without a reservation, but only because we actually arrived quite late. We ended up being the last guest in the restaurant, but we got excellent service until the end.
The food was amazing. Local and seasonal at its best.
They always have exciting changes to their menu, always local, always fresh and it's always excellently prepared. Their menu makes me excited to eat, and I can never make up my mind because there's so many things I want to try!
The menu is derived from a French style of cooking and uses local ingredients.
The service was excellent, and our mains were appetizing and well presented.
We ordered the charcuterie to start, a selection of in-house cured meats. At $10 for the plate, it was a steal. The items on the plate, on the other hand, were not for the...

We dined here during the early sitting last evening. The service and food and wine were delghtful. Among the four of us we tried everything on the set menu. Everything was delicious especially the lobster salad with beets and carmelized leeks. Mmmm. Also the swordfish was perfect. We'll be back.
Excellent. Meets or beats the high expectations set by its advertising. Unique taste combinations of very fresh local vegetables and seafood, with just enough sauces and seasonings to enhance the ingredients but not displace the natural taste of the food. The chef is very skilled at pairing foods. Swordfish and haddock expertly prepared, excellent mussel appetizer. The seafood chowder is... more
The food was good - The ambiance poor. It was slightly overpriced.
We were looking for a good restaurant with great locally grown food. In Halifax this is the place. On the expensive side but worth it if that's not a problem. Menu changes with seasons and what is available locally. We had wild mushroom tort, monkfish and scallops. Amazing flavors and textures. Server was expert. Best restaurant experience in Nova Scotia.... more
I'm surprised to see negative reviews about this place. We ate dinner here, and really liked the food. There was only one waitress and she also had to make drinks, so she was harried, but I thought she was very good and friendly. The food was quite tasty, good ingredients, cooked to perfection (I had the hanger steak). The dining... more
Mother's day Brunch ..all was good until the 20 minutes it took to have our order taken. Food was good. however at the end of the meal we were asked to leave before we had our desert as they had other reservations coming in . The restaurant is apparently booked for one hour time slots and apparently our time was... more
My experience with Fid was in a private function as a conference dinner. The experience was unforgettable. The servers were constantly moving around the tables taking off old plates and putting new ones with exotic appetizers or creative snacks. I went through 7 or 8 courses to the music of a local artist playing his guitar and singing some oldies.
My most favourable dish was the scallops with...

I do not understand the fascination with this restaurant. I've been there 3 times, and each time was worse than the time before. The decor and the menu are the same: sparse and bland. On the 3rd visit, as a party of 8, we were so hungry after the 2-hour "fine dining experience" that we all went to McDonald's around the corner. You shouldn't leave a restaurant with an empty wallet AND an empty... more
The food was very nicely laid out and had a nice flavour for the most.
The servers were a little odd though and sometimes forgot about us.
It's been around for some time so they are clearly pleasing some Haligonians.
I've been to Fid twice, and the second time (as part of a party of six) was royally annoyed by the poor service - extremely long wait time to receive our meal and between courses, as well as a somewhat snooty server. And when the food finally arrived we were all very disappointed with the taste of our meals. Poor service, mediocre food, and high price - I won't be back.
This is the second time my partner and I went to Fid. Both times we were taking friends and family for what was meant to be a special meal. The first time was lackluster - in terms of food and service - so it was a couple of years before we went back. However, a review that said Fid had... more
I went to Fid twice in a week, once with colleges, once with my boyfriend. I had two very different experiences, one very good, one very bad.
The first time at Fid was really nice. We had great service and great food. I had grilled redfish on vegetables (chanterelles, green beans, etc). It was very tasty, although a bit on...

You can't see the entrance from the street; there is a sign but you walk past the sign and turn into a "courtyard" building with other businesses inside. We went our first night in Halifax, toured Nova Scotia, and returned for our last night in Halifax to try the dishes we had missed. There in an appetizer called the "Mayhem",... more
We had dinner at Fid a couple of weeks ago. All in all, it was OK -- it was not as great as I was expecting based on all the hype I've heard. Make no mistake, the food wasn't bad. I personally had the ribs, which were very savoury in a hoisin marinade. The side veg were very crunchy, but... more
I went with a small group to Fid recently. I'd been a couple of times before they changed the decor and menu from the more formal / pricey initial setup but this was my first visit under the new system. (I noted that they still have the yummy pad thai on the lunch menu - it was really good before,... more
Granted we haven't been to a lot of them, but this one is the best so far. The service was good - our server was new on the job but he answered a lot of questions and found out the answers to those he didn't know. Everyone was helpful. The salads were so very good - the freshest lettuce, tossed... more
Definitely one my top 4 in the city of Halifax -- Morris East, Chives, Gio, being the other 3, it is hard not to give it number one. Great hospitality, and the food is always exceptional.
Fid was fabulous from start to finish. The food was excellent and inventive, the waitstaff was wonderful, and the atmosphere perfect and low key. One of the best eaten-alone meals of my life because of the attentive and gracious way they took care of me. Delectable scallops, lovely melange of vegetables, and thoughtfully prepared bites between courses. Loved it!
My wife and I love the Fid. It is pricey and so we only go once in a blue moon, but the service has been consistently top notch. The food is always interesting, and they serve small appetizers and palate-cleansers between courses. We have never had any negative experience at the Fid.
We gave Fid a third try because of all the attention Chef Dennis Johnston is getting. The Dining room is nice and the dress for the evening was anywhere from suits to T-shirts and baseball caps.
We ordered the tasting menu with wine samples for $95.00 per person. This is usually the Chefs signature items so we splurged and went big....

If fresh tuna is on the menu, go for it.
Better attention to service than most, sometimes.
