This food doesn't taste like real Mexican food!!!! Whats going on with Mexican restaurants in Vancouver??
Good good , good atmosphere, good prices. Defenitely worth a try!
I found myself going by Doña Cata when I was stricken with a slight hunger pang. With the massive “$2 Tacos” sign calling, I gave in and decided it was time for a quick snack. Despite... more
The food here was excellente. It is like walking into mexico when you step into the restaraunt. Me and my friend ordered 9 tacos betweeen the 2 of us. I had to chicken, he had a variety of the pork and beef ones. My favorite part of the meal was all the different salsas and condiments. There is about 10 different kinds, so you will find something you like for sure. Yes you have to get up to go... more
I got yelled at!! And this is a reason why we ended up at Dona Cata instead of Reconsito Salvadoreno . Which is my next visit come this weekend, because I'm curious to their pupusas. But... more
It is a hole in the wall eatery, but it just looked and felt more authentic than it actually tasted, at least for the tacos. It's cheap eats though!
The tacos I had were really good and at $2 a pop you can try a few from their selection of 7.Be sure to try one of their bottled sodas imported from Mexico. I'd recommend the Sangria (like a cherry coke) or the bottled Coke (made in Mexico, sweetened with cane sugar).
...step outside the North American experience and head to Dona Cata. You won't be disappointed.
Overall, bland flavours made for boring food, and combined with empty promises, this made for a profoundly disappointing $20.50 spent.
hi i went to this place, and i really like it, if you dont know about mexican food, i know i am chilanga from mexico city and dona cata is autentic i am a big fan of tacos but you can try alambres too, i live 45 minutes from there but its ok, i will back for sure....!!! su amiga lola
I ordered 3 tacos - 1 lamb and 2 different kinds of pork. They were $2 each so my meal was $6. If you want cheese it's an extra 50 cents each taco. I wasn't too impressed. The lamb did not taste like lamb. At first they gave me a chicken taco instead of lamb and I got that switched no problem. But the lamb tasted like bland pork... and besides the meat, they don't put much else on the tacos.... more
So far, best mexican food in town. Might not be the place to take a first date, but the food is great. Being Mexican myself (btw.visit my art gallery @ www.tequilamockingbird.ca or come visit us in Gastown ; ) you would think I know what I'm talking about!!So far, the only place in Vancouver that I've been to, where I'm never disappointed with the food. The service might be a different story...... more
This place was OK, or even good in 2009. And it seems they then invited all their relatives who couldn't cook or serve to work there...I'm not kidding, this was great place, but the last 3 times, the sauces (10) haven't been changed in days, the food is old (no other word for it) and the servers are... non-responsive. Actually, if they didn't move, you might think you were requesting service... more
I love this place! Try the chicken enchiladas!!
One of my top 5 pet peeves is inappropriate salsa serving ware. It is a semi-full serve restaurant in so much as you are seated (choose wisely as several of the tables are no more than cheap fold out card tables with almost no overhang - making it necessary to move the table in and out ) and served everything but the salsa's. That's the "semi" part. The self serve salsa bar has something like 5... more
In Vancouver, these are the best you're gonna get. A taco should be just delicious and meaty--and these don't disappoint. Cheap, again, like all tacos should be, and the sangria pitchers are a steal to wash them down with. Love the tiny, warmed up taco shells, just like Mexico! But Dona Cata--get some pico de galla salsa!!
I've been to nearly all the authentic "taco" spots in Vancouver, and would say these are probably the best. At $2 each, the price is right, the fillings authentic (pork skin, el pastor, chorizo) and the tortillas are warmed properly on the grill, in what I hope was manteca. Topped with onions and cilantro. They do have a great selection of salsas, but all were pretty dissappointing. No fresh... more
I was curious about Doña Cata's and decided to go have a taco or two. We tried most of what they had, al pastor, carnitas, chicken, and beef. Four tacos left me just a bit hungry so i had one more. The salsas were pretty good, i like the chipotle and the tomatillo the most. I found the tacos to be a little bit more generous than at the taqueria downtown where they were a bit skimpy.the... more
A lot of food bloggers love this place and we had been looking forward to eating here - high expectations...and we won't be back. Had the tacos, not impressed with the flavours, pretty bland and boring, not much to say really.
Authentic Mexican food......The Lamb and Roasted Pork Taco's were amazing... Many interesting choices for Salsa, try the peanut...100% recommended, will be back to try more menu items.
Dona Cata won the Best of the Americas category in Vancouver magazine?s restaurant awards. Most well-known for their balanced flavours, slow-cooked chilli and spiced meats, this restaurant develops its dishes with precision. Salsa?s come in a very wide variety, with 8 different types! Every flavour has its own unique taste, offering anything from classic bright green tomatillo to a creamy... more
So many salsas to choose from...delicious tacos (the real deal) and that yummy milk cake. This place was soooo good!
Superb food! The gringas were extra cheesy and the coronas were cold! Good music, good times!
as a mexican I would defenetly recommend it. Only mexican restaurant worth going! Great value too! Love the place! Felicidades!!
Looking forward to going back to this place and trying some other dishes. We both had the tacos and they were so good. Love that you can pick what type of meat (we had the steak and pork) and the salsas were yummy . The margs. are great and the beer was ice cold.
Voted numerous times to be the most authentic tacos in Vancouver. This is definitely not an easy feat, considering you can find food from all over the world in Vancouver, with many Mexican/Latin restaurants along Victoria/Commercial drive. I've been to Dona Cata 3 times, and I've left each time satisfied and happy with the food.www.604foodtography.com/2009/02/15/do...
