The Design Exchange (DX) promotes the value of Canadian design through engaging and enriching public programs and exhibitions in its aim to establish Canada as a design leader worldwide.
Located in the old Stock Exchange Building, the Design Exchange -- or DX, as it prefers to be known -- has become an important Canadian design museum. It features work from a range of disciplines, from architecture to fashion, landscape design to interactive media design. The Resource Centre has a library-like collection of design books, magazines, and other materials that can be viewed by... more
We saw the 'this is not a toy' exhibition advertised in a brochure at our hotel and we decided to pay the Design Exchange a visit. The exhibit was a bit weird but strangely good - including Star Wars, the Beatles, Gorillaz and Daft Punk. The exhibition was co-curated by Pharrell Williams.
This was not at all what I presumed a design museum would be like (and in fact has been at other locations in the past!)
For $16, you have to go up to the 3rd floor to walk a very modest floor space of pieces, that I could have easily imagined would be free to view.
Very disappointing all round.
I went to the Design Exchange for the Christian Louboutin exhibit, and was pleasantly surprised! I expected it to be great, but I loved the fact that it was more than shoes. It shared some fashion... more
I spent part of yesterday at the Design Exchange checking out the Christian Louboutin exhibit. The building the DE is in is architecturally and historically interesting. It is in the financial... more
As short walk from the Westin. The exhibit is artistic and witty. There is humour in the design of shoes which is more than just fashion. Though not everyone's cup of tea... some would find the... more
Had a chance to see Christian Louboutin exhibit at the Design exchange, great collection of his work. If you enjoy fashion and LOVE shoes this is a must see!! It's $20.00 for exhibit. Great day out for a "girls-day"!! also get a one year subscription to fashion magazine with purchasing a ticket to the exhibit. Ends September 15,2013.
Lovely exibit. A real gem. Shoes, shoes and more shoes!! A feast for the eye and senses. Cinderalla shoes, high heels, low heels, fantasy shoes, shoe designs, bling-bling shoes and more. Dazzling! We loved it! Louboutin is a real genius. Well done Design Exchange!
I went specifically to Toronto to see the Christian Louboutin exhibit, as I am a design student. It was amazing, I felt like a kid in a candy store. The exhibit was amazing and an amazing lay out, how ever, i paid for the whole admin, but it was very difficult to get to the third floor that I gave... more
This summer's CL exhibit is beautiful for shoeaholics, artists, and creative types. It took about 1.5 hours to go through at a slow pace reading the signs.
However I had a peek through the rest of the museum and it was drab, sparse and i would have been unimpressed to have paid to see the exhibits presented.
I guess there's some renovation going on. Lonely Planet book said exhibition is free; it costs $10, there were less than 10 exhibits in total with some of them still being installed.
Usually places are closed down or reduced/free while there's not really much to see, but not this one.
Incredible show.
Up for three months and so worthwhile.
The Happy Show.
Make sure to take the elevator. Look up and look down.
Very interesting but 90% of the space is taken by whatever special exhibition is going on. It is possible that every one they host is as interesting as the one I saw, but better check beforehand, since the permanent collection is nice but very small. Also, good luck in finding the place within the Dominion Centre :-)
A very interesting place but it will depend a lot on what special exhibitions are on when you are there.
We were lucky and there were 2 good ones which kept us interested for 2 or 3 hours.
There is a small permanent display of Canadian design icons.
I went to this place a few years ago and enjoyed looking around. If you are into design then you are going to enjoy this place.
When we werethere, there was an exhibit of tutus made by a variety of artisans, not menat to be worn, but really fun and beautiful. Also, an exhibit on the design history of the Nutcracker ballet- we enjoyed very much. The Spanish Design, not so much- pretty minimal. Overall, recommended.
We went to the Tutu Project and the 60 year National Ballet of Canada retrospective at the Design Exchange, and then on to the Pablo Picasso exhibit at the AGO. Both were phenomenal.
The Exchange is quite small and the content will likely appeal more to people in the industry then to visitors in general. Definitely don't take children or teenagers to the Exchange. The Design Exchange is housed in the former Toronto Stock Exchange so the building itself is quite attractive. Although not officially open, we snuck into the original stock trading... more
This was a great chance to see something out of the ordinary. As a graphic designer, I love to get inspired by the creativity of others. We went during the "Milano Made in Design" exhibit and it was really interesting. The room was transformed into separate areas that were very hands-on. They had cool chairs, diamond rings that moved (articulated),... more
Design Exchange offers these services: banquets, salles, réception.
Canada's only design promotion center, Design Exchange exhibits the latest in fashion, graphic design and ergonomics. Named after its location in the former Toronto Stock Exchange building, the Design Exchange also boasts the original trading floor, with its historic murals intact. The mural depicting "Work" is particularly fascinating, with its use of color and technique. International,... more
