Good variety of vegetarian options and excellent salad bar. Pay - by - weight though so if you're a big eater or like more water-heavy foods, this can cost you lots. Quality is good but I would not return here because of cost.
I've been to Commensal a couple of times now and the food, while nice, isn't the best. It is passable, but not anything worth making a long trip.
i've been going to commensal for years and have never been disappointed by the food and selection. this is my go to spot when i'm going to be dining with vegetarians.

I had high hopes for this all vegetarian buffet. We had a coupon which made the meal more affordable but I cannot imagine paying full price for the quality of food and experience we encountered. We sampled many of the dishes from both the cold and hot buffet and nothing on the menu was particularly flavourful. Food from the hot buffet was not very hot. For the price, this restaurant is just not... more
I went here for dinner, it was an all-over terrible experience. The salads were so soggy it looked (and tasted) like they had sat in that buffet for hours on end. The hot food was cold, and tasted bland- rather like eating cardboard. Even the girl behind the counter rang my order in a partly comatose state. DO NOT GO HERE!
We went for dinner, it was good. Great variety. All fresh eventhough I imagine their busy time is lunch.More of a buffet style, upper class cafeteria. Like most healthy restaurants, you pay for what you get. Fresh fruits and veggies (especially organic items) are not cheap people!!
E: The food at Le Commensal is meat-free. In a metropolitan area strangely devoid of vegetarian and vegan options Le Commensal is an oasis of health (which matches the establishment's name), taste and decency. How so? All items are vegetarian or vegan and are marked accordingly as 'vegan' or 'vegetarian' or 'gluten free,' etc. Moreover, in lieu of a menu, they have their foods named and labelled... more
Also, I really appreciate that they label all the dishes accordingly. The labels tell you whether a dish has dairy or egg or it’s gluten free.
Visited Commensal with a few friends after purchasing a TeamBuy coupon. I did some reading ahead of time and warned everyone to be mindful of how much food they piled on their plates. We were all pretty conservative on our first go around and still averaged ~$15 for a plate of food. I was satisfied with the amount of food but not full. The food itself was average, lukewarm fare... There wasn't... more
The food was all great (many traditional and creative vegetarian and vegan options, lots having meat alternatives or mock meats), but as it is pay-by-weight it turned out to be very pricey. I also don't always enjoy buffet-style, since I end up getting little bits of everything that amounts to too much in the end. Good food, but I wasn't super thrilled with the experience.
...The salad was delicious. The sweet apples were a great sidekick to the red beets. The bourguignon had chunks of seitan which almost tasted like meat to me.
This place is ok for a quick vegetarian bite (buffet-style, pay-by-weight), but no way comes close to the one in Montreal.
Commensal is a very popular place among vegetarians and vegans. It's a buffet-style restaurant and your food is charged by weight. Recommendations • They offer a
Went to the restaurant for the first time last night. First appearance, everything looks good.. decor is average, seating is average.Walked through the Buffet, got the Cream of Broccoli soup, which comes with a free slice of Organic bread. This was my first hint... The bread is store bought, and not the little store where they have homemade bread, but grocery store bought. This set off some... more
Nice election of salads and dishes. But once you go to the cashier, expect four star prices. Definitely overpriced. Better go to whole foods buffet. It's cheaper an healthier.
There’s at least one restaurant in this city with a unique way of pricing its menu items. By weight. Le Commensal, on Bay St., just this side of hospital row, has a vast and healthful... more
It was a long time ago (many years, actually), but I had very high hopes for this one due to my food sensitivities. Since I was sick on the way home from the restaurant, I do not plan to risk it again. I guess this demonstrates the enormous impact of a negative experience at a restaurant. It was memorable - in a bad way - but very memorable!
Commensal is a vegetarian buffet that also offers gluten-free, egg-free and dairy-free menu items.
It's good for when you're feeling like cafeteria-style vegetarian food.
What a splendid pace this is! It's like a cafeteria and the food has no prices marked- you pay be weight. Excellent food and much choice. Friendly folk and reasonable prices too.

Nobody has to say "Finish your vegetables" in this spacious, 5,000 sq.-foot cafeteria-style restaurant. You purchase only what you want (by weight), and there's a vast array of items. Salads, soups, sandwiches, hot entrees (more than 25), desserts you don't have to die for, fresh juices and lots of charm. Although most patrons are non-vegetarians wanting a healthy meal or snack, certain entrees... more
