Great omelets

I like my omelets not too cooked and Gautier makes the best omelets period. I tried the one with all the vegetable and it was amazing.

This restaurant is baffling. The food was variable--poor to very good--depending on what was ordered, but the general disorder of the restaurant made it a poor choice for dinner. On the early Saturday evening that we were there, by 7 PM they had run out of all fish entrees, some soups and some desserts. Even the silverware starting running out.... plus

Excellent start

Nice! Beautiful day, nice garden setting outside a charming French old tea room interior. But then the service. Very clearly focussed on regulars with whom discussions inevitable end in laughter. Nice at first but as the kindness is not extended to others, it becomes an irritation. As for the food: mixed appreciation. All a bit tired.

Disappointing food, terrible service

While on a recent trip to Montreal we tried this restaurant for dinner on the recommendation of our hotel front desk. Limited brunch menu, okay lunch

Went with a group of friends for brunch recently. Having eaten here before for dinner, I was expecting something fantastic. They have a nice private terrasse that is filled with plants and a large dinning room.

Good food, presentation poor

Busy bistro, fair prices; plates are sad looking, poorly presented. Many habitués return again and again; this is the best reason to try it. No frills. Verrière is nice in the bar area if you are alone and sit there. Understaffed/Personnel too busy like wild gooses.
Do not forget to visit the annexed pastry shop (connecting inside).

Classic, old-school French restaurant

Very nice, classic interior; slightly spoilt by the TV over the bar. Nice enough French cuisine and not too pricey. The service allowed time to linger, so not a problem for us. Excellent wine. Lamb, duck confit and salt cod all very flavoursome and well cooked.

Some of the worst service ever experienced

Lowlights of the meal and service:
-Classic cheese and mushroom omelette swimming in grease
-Companion's salad was served to the wrong person. Waiter recognized the problem after the salad had been cut by my wife. Waiter then took the salad and gave it to the right person.

A Good Choice If You Are In The Neighborhood

I have been eating at Chez Gautier for more than 15 years and though there have been occasional lapses in service the traditional French cuisine is consistently good. There are better French bistros in Montreal to be sure, but dining here will not be a disappointment. Patisserie Belge, which adjoins the restaurant, is a delight.

They have a prix-fixe breakfast for $12.50 where you choose from eggs benedict or eggs with smocked salmon ir eggs with bacon/sausage/cheese. Stay away far far away

We just had dinner there. The duck was barely average and the sautéed potoatoes were not sautéed at all.
Les quenelles de brochet were swimming in a soup not a sauce, and the steak was not cooked rare as we asked.

Gave us funny look when we told them we had no reservation even though the restaurant was more than half empty. I think they try to keep it upscale but their service and menu couldn't match. Food wasn't bad but wasn't impressive either. My bf got the veal which was nice and I got the salt cod which again was nice but tasted a little too fishy to me. Don't think I'll go back there again.

Nice start to eating in Montreal

Nice dinner with delicious food. We especially liked the tilapia and filet of porc. The creme caramel finished off our meal perfectly. The service was good and attentive; however, we did go around 6:30p.

A great ambiance, good food but bad service

This place needs an anema. Staff were on auto pilot. I could not get my coffee for breakfast untl after my main dish was served. Ridiculous. The staff were not rude but were old school in the sense that they were pretentious. I used to love going here. What a shame.

good value for house made French fare

Gautier sits side by side with la patisserie Belge. The pastisserie Belge is a caterer and a pastry shop. They both feature the same chefs. Chez Gautier is a restaurant that features their own brand of French specialties: quenelles, soups, confits, etc.

Dinner started off well an amuse-bouche of 3 bite size quiches.  I ordered the cut of a leg of lamb with thyme sauce.  It was served with some kind of green garnish and a side of French Fries.  French Fries?  Couldn't they come up with some other way of cooking the potato?  Potatoes au gratin perhaps?  Something that requires more culinary skills than dumping fries into the fryer.  These... plus

This is a very cool place. The spaghetti is absolutely delicious and the chicken is well cooked too. The service is good, the prices are cheap, and there is some little juke-box for each tables. I really love that restaurant!!!

Excellent bistro type cafe with easy parking - not an easy feat in downtown Montreal. Good sandwiches and quiches, but the best are the profiterolles.

Very honest cuisine in a very european atmosphere. Adjoining free parking with valet service when crowded.
