Stopped there for lunch on the way back from PEI - easy location off highway. The waitress was friendly - the food (turkey sandwich) was definitely homemade and the milk shake was soothing. Someone in our party had a hot dog and they said they were not impressed but the homemade stuff all looked good.
The prices were good -...

Both AAA and Trip Advisor reviewers indicated the food here would be excellent. It was bland, flavorless. I even had to put salt and pepper in the clam chowder. If you're looking for lots of food for the money, this is your place. If you're looking for tasty, keep driving.
This is a very small restaurant with really nice waitresses. I eat here for a meal every time I visit St. Stephen. The food is good. They have great home made desserts! My favorite is the roast turkey meal.
We stopped here for lunch to soak in some local flavor. It was OK-nothing fancy or elaborate, but plain food. The fish chowder seemed a little watery, but maybe that's how they cook it in St Stephen; the fried fish was hot and good. It was mostly local people here, and they all seemed happy, so it's clear it's a... more
Had a small fish and chip, really good. Friend had the western sandwich and liked it also. We were talked into a really good piece of blueberry pie.
Stopped in St. Stephen for the night on our way to Nova Scotia and had a great homemade dinner at this cute, family-owned 60's era diner complete with vinyl booths and juke boxes at the tables. The place was packed with locals even on a Tuesday night and the staff was friendly as can be. We found the water bowl... more
Found this one on the GPS, off the highway and worth it. Looks like a very popular local diner and it's easy to see why. Decor was homey, under renovations and hopefully they are putting in more seats as they need them. We had probably the best fish and chips in a while. Delicious, crunchy coating and yet light at... more
Although the ambiance is lacking and the decor is dated, this establishment is clean and offers great service and exceptional food.
The food is average...it isn't fine dining by any means, but it is good takeout-style food if that's what you're in the mood for.
Carman's is predictable and that's a good thing. If we're in a hurry passing through or if we're not scouting out fine dining, this is a good stop. The food is typical diner fare which is not a minus and the staff is always accommodating. We're heading up that way again this fall and will, no doubt, stop by for... more
Our second stop at Carman's over the years but the same as I remember. Old style diner (real - not faux 50's style) complete with vinyl booths and juke boxes at your table. There were four in our group and we all totally enjoyed our meals (everything from fish & chips to hot hamburger sandwiches). Comfort food heaven! We even... more
Although I live less than an hour up the road in Saint John, I had never been to Carman's until just this past week. I should have gone there year's ago as it was amazing - the food was absolutely amazing!! Home cooked!! And the homemade pie was beyond good!
The service was quick and the waitress was very pleasant....

They are amazing in their service, friendly staff and great food at an affordable price. They are an old fashioned diner with booths and juke boxes at each table, drop in a quarter and listen to your favorite song.
If you're looking for a local diner experience from his fifties or sixties this is your place. The food is nothing exceptional however it is traditional diner fare. The food lacks consistency.
My wife and I try to go to Carmen's every Sunday for Breakfast. The friendly atmosphere (including '50's juke boxes) and amazing service, no matter how crowded, makes it a meal to look forward to.
We have had other meals as well and the super service is always present. There is a daily special but the reasonable prices make every...

Carman's has old charm but the food is traditional home cooking. The Table Top jukebox still works with a few oldie songs. The atmosphere is very friendly. Love the old style booths.
My husband and I have made it a tradition to visit Carman's for Canadian Thanksgiving dinner for the past few years. We really enjoy the diner atmosphere, with its old-time juke boxes and comfort food. Our Thanksgiving dinner was perfect for what we wanted. Not fancy, but all the favorites cooked like it was at home. And the staff was... more
Awesome food, reasonable priced, huge servings.
service was fast and friendly. Will definitely cross the boarder to come here again!
I love this place and i always try and time road trips to or from the US so I can stop at Carman's
Very traditional with vinyl booths. menu heavy on hot sandwiches, burgers, fish and chips etc etc....great home made soups. Their breakfasts are really good too.
This restaurant has never updated which is part of its charm. People have been going here for over 50 years and I think most booths have the original upholstery. The food is classic fair with the exception of Friday. Their fish chowder is very good. If you order a sandwich - watch the mayonnaise, they like to load it on!
My parents and I visited this restaurant on Oct 7th. Great service, very clean and oh, the food !
True homemade burgers and pies. Just a delight and we're so happy to have discovered it.
You have to try it - just look for the beautiful flower filled window boxes lining the building.
Small booths, a bit drab. My husband had the seafood chowder, which was good, if a bit expensive. I didn't order it because it was rather warm in the diner and I thought it would make me sweat, so I ordered from the a la carte page two pieces of "fish" (type unspecified) and some beets. (The choice of "hot... more
Having read the reviews, we had to try Carman's. From the outside, it looks very attractive, with its window boxes of petunias cascading almost to the ground. However, once inside, you see that the place hasn't been modernised in aeons! The menu was adequate - if you like fish. If you're a meat or fish lover, you'll be spoiled for... more
We loved this place because it is so old fashioned, so local, so clean and so pleasant.
We had eggs and toast and home fries and a Big Pancake! Delicious! With coffee, total price $13.30! I call that very reasonable.
Very nice, friendly service.
The petunias cascading from the window boxes make a spectacular sight.
We go to St Stephen...

If you haven't been to a 50s or 60s, diner lately, and I can't imagine you could have been because there're aren't many, if any, around you've gotta stop in this place.
Wow, the decor hasn't changed since....well, since ever. Talk about nostalgia, with the possible exception of the prices.
Old juke boxes and tunes, looks like the original swivel...

While staying at the Winsome Inn, we were recommended to this diner. The waitress was friendly. This was down-home food, cooked and seasoned well, served with humor and a pleasant attitude, and reasonably priced. And who doesn't love retro jukeboxes? Go there if you're in the area.
Carmen's has been around for YEARS! Good old home cooking. I've had breakfast here for years. It's very good. This kind of place seem to be slipping away into history. But, Carmen's always has a crowd breakfast. Give it a try!

We were told Carmans is the place to go in St. Stephen. The booths were tiny for a family of 5 so we eventually spread out into 2 once more were open. Food was typical diner quality.
This is an excellent option if you feel like a homey meal or typical 60's dinner experience. Many items on the menu, great pie options. The service was excellent, very efficient. Price is very good. Around 10$ for a Salisbury steak platter. (Homemade mash potato, vegetables and coleslaw included).
If you want to know what's going on in Saint Stephens, eat at Carmen's Diner. It has been there forever. The trains used to go by regularly on the nearby tracks. All the buildings and properties around it have been sold off, including the "Better Duck Inn" motor court that was built back in the Model T touring days. Franchised... more
Carman's is an institution in the St.Stephen area. It is an old diner and I think the stools at the counter were the original ones on Noah's ark. Honestly, they need to put a little money into the business, because the first impression is not a good one.
However, we needed a place for breakfast, we had eaten there before...

I enjoyed my visit to your restaurant. The friendly service wow! You were a part of my trip to N.B. We had a burger the first day. It was homemade... nice to see. The next day we came for breakfast. My daughter and I stopped here while traveling through St. Stephen, about 2 hours from our home in Maine. The parking lot was full, so that confirmed our decision. We had sandwiches, which were tasty and reasonably priced. The diner itself is dated, but homey. The staff was friendly, the diner seemed to be a meeting spot for the locals -... more
Had a great supper with my son tonight. Loved the friendly waitress, and the friendliness of the other guests. Really made you feel you "came home for supper :)". The homemade pies were marvelous! It was their FB page that inspired me to go, and they didn't let me down. We'll be back soon.
My partner and I decided to give the food at Carmen's a try, despite of the appearance of the building.
Other groups came in after us and their orders were promptly taken while we waited.
We were finally served - the waitress spilt coffee on my partner and did not apologize. We cleaned the coffee off the table ourselves. She...

I enjoyed a fish and chips with a side of gravy for my fries. The fish was nicely battered and tasty. The meal arrived quickly and the service was friendly. After driving all day I had a hankering for a lobster roll. I got one at Carman's Diner, overflowing with chunks of lobster, with coleslaw and fried on the side. Seafood Chowder was excellent, good service, not to be missed. Good home cooking. Well worth the stop. As others have pointed out, a little paint and sprucing up would help, but good food and prices are hard to match.
The lady at the hotel recommended it even though it didn't jump out when I was searching on Trip Advisor? I just checked and it's rated just above Tim Hortons?? They make everything from scratch and it shows!! Booths are a little worn out but the food more than makes up for it, good home cooking!!!
Arrived at 11:30 am and were seated at 2 booth (family of five). Nice diner but could use a bit of sprucing up. The booth seats are cracking and maybe a fresh coat of paint~all minor though. Seems to be popular with the locals and was full by the time we left.
Ordered a child's fish and chips, 2 large...

I was expecting a diner atmosphere - and that is what it is. No disappointment there. The food certainly wasn't bad, but it wasn't the best either. I had the baked haddock. This is an authentic diner, not a 3-star Michelin restaurant in France. Get off your high horse, people. If you're in St. Stephen and want good, moderately-priced food, eat here.
However, it would be better if all the locals didn't turn and stare when out-of-towners walk in.
If you are expecting linen tablecloths and candelight, this is not the place for you. Carman's is an old diner, with a counter and stools that are definitely original from another time and era. We stopped in on our way to the U.S. after Christmas. The place was full, tables and booths alike. The waitress was cheerful and friendly. The... more
I agree with another reviewer who is not a fan of Carman's. The place is drab, the food is just mediocre at best, but the prices are modest. I've eaten at Carman's 4 different times over the past couple of years and with the exception of the price of the meal, which was very good, I am not a fan of this restaurant. a diner and a good one. We stop often for lunch and the fish chowder is excellant. Service is home town, friendly and efficient. Milkshakes, soups, chowders and sandwiches are always well done and they have a good selection of expected diner fare.
The gossip one hears from the palce where the whole town must gather is also so amusing....

Old-fashioned diner with good fare. Great waitress's and Coke products, not the omnipresent Pepsi of the rest of Eastern Canada. Good wireless and a/c too.
We dined for Sunday breakfast in Carman's Diner in St. Stephen, New Brunswick...as we were on our way back to the States from Grand Manan. First of all, the atmostphere and decor are, I believe, all original from the 50s or 60s...vinyl covered stools at the counter and booths, which certainly seemed original and not replicated. The wait staff were... more
