Un des premiers café établis à Montreal. Le café Santropol offre un atmosphère vintage et relax.
Belle sélection de sandwich gouteux. Belle ambiance et terrasse. À recommander.

Heaping, homemade soups and sandwiches served to students, local politicians and granolas in Birkenstocks (with socks, of course) in a rickety old house with a wildflower-filled terrace and fish pond. Just try to wrap your mouth around that monstrous three-decker sandwich stuffed with olive and spice cream cheese, honey and ham. Wash it down with a Diabolo -soda water with flavors like mint,... plus
Simply love the killer tomato sandwich and the milk shakes made with real fruit
Je suis allée avec ma mère et ma soeur. Nous avons adoré!! C'est très pittoresque de Montréal. Ça vaut le détour.
Tasty soups and sandwiches...oh, and let's not forget the desserts!
Really disappointed in this café! For the 2nd time now, the waitress/waiter has given me the wrong order. Today, I ordered my regular Killer Tomato with Ham and gluten free bread (I am intolerant to gluten) and I believed I was given regular bread. I asked my waitress to double check that it was gluten free and she assured me that it was. However, now I am incredibly sick because that bread was... plus
Food was alright and had a large variety of vegan options... HOWEVER this does not make up for the terrible service by the waitstaff. After constantly being ignored by these pretentious waitresses and constantly having to get up to help ourselves to water, napkins, etc. we were disappointed once again when we had to pay, and were ignored as they let their "regulars" jump in front of us -... plus
Such a classic Montreal institution! Slow moving and no AC - what else can we expect from this classic sandwich and soup stop. Their bohemian patio is often full during lunch and lazy afternoons in the summer, but their inside seating with ceiling fans and sunlight are a close second seating wise. The menu is not the cheapest (if you want a full meal here it will most likely be over 15$... plus
Café Santropol is extremely mediocre and I honestly only go here when a vegetarian friend suggests it. The service is HORRIBLE and the food is overpriced and lacklustre. When I walked in I waited in the area that said "please wait to be seated," however the waitresses kept walking by my friend and I without acknowledging us. After around 3 minutes of waiting a woman came from behind the counter... plus
Very nice little vegetarian, healthy, sandwich place. I got a mango chutney one with chicken salad (sorry i want my meat). It was very fresh and refreshing from all those heavy restaurants. It was a bit expensive in my opinion. My mom raved about this place for so long. The sandwiches are huge! None of us finished them. They were all very good. Too much cream cheese though. I wouldnt mind going... plus
chair was a little rocky. the sandwich was prodigious in size, truly colossal. i also felt like a rabbit while eating their salad, which had sprouts in it, very leporine indeed, mm, yes.
decor: tremendous
smell: exhilarating
service: buttery smooth, silky, even
complaint: your coffee somehow made me more tired, and for that, i must eradicate a star, for such behaviour is simply unforgivable
This place was recommended to me as having the best sandwiches in Montreal (sorry, that's Olive & Gourmando) so I was excited to go, especially because I'm vegetarian and it looked like they had a great veggie selection.
I was really disappointed. The service is really not good - I spent about 15 minutes standing next to the "LET US SEAT YOU" sign and the wait staff kept ignoring me, which was...

Food at santropol taste really good and the price is very reasonable; however, the portions are way too big. It is impossible to have a three course meal. Sandwiches are heavenly, but the salad that comes with the sandwiches don't need to be there. It just looks like a bunch of vegetables plopped on the plate with a very acidic dressing on the side. So in my opinion, they should get rid of the... plus
A unique cafe in the plateau Montreal. Its ambience is very Montrealish: old, casual, beautiful, wooden squeaky floors, bright lights and hustle of the people chatting. They offer a great selection of coffee, tea and sandwiches.
I have heard that they have one of the best terraces in Montreal... but for that I have to revisit them in summers.
I would totally recommend this place if you are...

Roomier than it looks from the outside. Super casual soup and sandwich type restaurant. I can see why students love it...I would eat here all the time if I lived close by. Sandwiches are big enough to share and are... plus
Loved finding this place, and had the best Italian white bean soup with delicious bread on the patio. Perfect for a slow afternoon of reading. They also have kombucha on tap!
We came here for brunch and ordered tea to start. The tea was nice and served on cute trays. We ordered for food tomato soup, chia pudding, a sandwich, and the chili. All the food was just ok except the chili. The chili was good and my friend very much enjoyed it. The rest of the food fell flat and was just ok. Not terrible, but not great. We definitely had higher expectations. The service was... plus
Amazing place with cute, quaint, and charming decoration. Friendly staff with good service. The food portions are large and very tasty, with some unique choices.
Possibly the most pretentious café in Montreal. The place generally looks nice and cosy but seriously, the food is horrible. I ordered a vegan sandwich which was basically apple and carrot grated over two pieces of brown bread. They gave me a side of salad which was basically grass. No dressing or even olive oil. They sat me outside near some water area which was breeding mosquitoes. There's so... plus
It's one of the situations where you walk by and something just pulls you in. This place had an awesome garden which was really appealing but we just had a good feeling about the food. I though the gazpacho was alright but it was just... plus
Santropol would be a lot better if they get rid of the little troll that works there, she has the biggest attitude! felt sorry for the people she was helping slams down the menus on the table and food on 2 multiple groups that we're being seated and gave a couple attitude because she thought they just came in and sat down, when they have been on the waiting list and we're seated by the nice guy... plus
TLDR: A pintrester's dream restaurant that serves simple but delicious food.
First, if you can you have to sit on their beautiful terrace. It is colourful, fresh and a laptop free zone. Enjoy the koi pond and the greenery as you eat light and refreshing food. The first time I ever went on a Saturday evening, we also enjoyed live music from a fun little indie group.
Their sandwiches are big,...

I would say it's a 5 star for staff and atmosphere. It has a really magical outdoor space for the summer and the decor is eclectic in a good way. The ingredients are fresh and bread is homemade so in theory the food should be really good but I don't think I delivered or tasted as good as it should have been. It has a ton of vegetarian options if you are a vegetarian and the homemade bread is... plus
One of my favourite sandwich spots!! The outdoor patio is perfect for the current weather!!!
This time we ordered the Roast Beef with Blue Cheese Sandwich and their signature Killer Tomato Sandwich.
The ingredients always taste fresh and servings are huge. Service is great.
All the good reviews take the words right out of my mouth! Officially my new favourite sandwich spot in Montreal. Also, the chili was AMAZING!! If it's a nice day when you go you HAVE to sit outside. The outside patio/garden has the nicest vibes and it's just a nice way to relax and enjoy the amazing food they have to offer.
One of the most favorite places in Montreal. They are always popular but still cozy and peaceful especially their lovely garden. I come back here every one month to get great sandwiches for my day off:)
I used to love this place and their eclectic vibe and great fresh sandwiches, I've been a long time customer and have been there in large groups, however, my last experience had me swearing off this place for good:

2. The water they bring to the...

I can't fully review Santropol's food or drink because a large pit bull (tied up in the doorway) bit my forearm before I was able to order. The owner of said dog had no consideration for the animal nor the patrons who had to either tip-toe around the canine or step over him.
After the large pit bull bit me, I went inside to wash my bloody arm in their washroom, but the manager refused to speak...

Okay, the patio and decoration and service are indeed beautifully hipster-ish, but I can make better sandwiches [I cannot make better soups though; they are fine]. My favourite café so far! The atmosphere is incredible because of the scenery... I was seated right next to the koi pond and had a beautiful view of the greenery. Bread was soft, chicken was not dry, and sauce/mayo was refreshing. My... plus
One of the best spots I found in Montreal! Sandwiches are great. I sat in a nice little reading spot at the front but the yard looked really lovely too! Friendly service, Will definitely come back here.
Sorry Santropol, the best thing about your restaurant is your terasse. The food is not as it used to be, neither the service. The bread was very dry, the sandwiches were empty inside and served on the 'premade long time ago' salad plate. We wish it could be as good as before !! Its such a beautiful place. Please improve ! :)
After delaying this visit for quite a while due to my initial thoughts of the place having a somewhat boring and basic concept (ie sandwiches, soups, and salads with the aesthetics as the main attraction), I decided to check it out for myself after having weird cravings for something healthy yet filling. So, what's my verdict on Café Santropol?
Well, I can definitely say that the place is...

I love places with a cute atmosphere and Santropol is definitely one of the cutest one I've seen so far. The whole interior emits a cosy vibe, with different "rooms", lots of arts, plants, pillows and low key lighting. This is the kind of place you want to bring a first date to. I'm not a huge sandwich person but I always love a sandwich from Cafe Santropol! Huge portions (I'm always full), soft house-made bread, delicious cream cheese options (just enough) and never dry! They have really flavorful soup as well as Chai Latte (light and spicy and just right). I highly recommend, especially for the special patio experience :)
THAT PATIO THO.
Looking to stay healthy during the summer? This place had pretty good food that is vegeterian friendly and affordable too! Yummy!!! Had the Duluth sandwich. Fresh pumpernickel bread, coconut bacon (extra), aged cheddar, pear slices, vegenaise... with vegetarian chili. All delicioso.. I also had a chai tea (I said iced but they mistook it for the hot tea). Wasn't fantastic but the serving was very generous. All in all would go again! Nice ambiance, friendly atmosphere and cool decor. Right location too!
I was very disappointed with their sandwiches that are very expensive . You have to put 10$ minimum to get a sandwich. They put a lot of sauce and no filling . They have big loaves of bread so expect to eat a lot of bread and nothing inside.
The only positive point is that their coffee is strong enough to keep going for the day.
Straight up, this place is not very good. A good sandwich has more than 3 thin slices of meat and waaayyyy!!!! Less cream cheese. The history of the building, eclectic decor and the beautiful looking patio, have the makings of a great experience. However, the service was terrible (they forgot put our order through... 20 minutes later... Soup of the day (meh) and the worst excuse for a sandwich... plus

This is one of my favorite sandwich places in Montreal. I hate going out for most sandwich places, I can make one at home.

The lovely garden out back does it for me; it's like eating in a clearing in a forest. But the gaspachio was also terrific.

It is a resto/café whit a beautiful decoration and a very nice garden. The quality of foods are not great but are not bad neither. The price is a bit high for what you get, however it is worth to go there some times to have a coffee or a sandwich.
This is a very nice cafe restaurant with one of the most beautiful gardens for outdoor eating in Montreal. Been coming here for 20 years and the place hasnt changed at all. Sometimes that's a bad thing but when something works just keep it the same.

So slow, so disorganized, with all the good restaurants in this city, there's absolutely no point in wasting your time waiting for a table here. The food is just not good enough to justify the wait times. Very disappointing!

It wasn't our first date, but it was still our first night together in Montreal.
Santropol is a bit of an institution in Montreal. Most locals have fond memories of many...

Santropol was, by far, my favorite meal during my stay. The dark wood bistro-type establishment with seating in their terraced garden has a loyal following and came through recommendation. Santropol makes their own bread, although only one type – which is a hearty, moist, sweet, dark bread - sliced thick. The menu is dominated by sandwiches and boasts some very unique combinations. Many have a... plus
Giant sandwiches and old-fashion fountain drinks in an eclectic environment. Pretty garden dining during the summer months. Great place to meet for quiet lunch.
I got to know this place thanks to VT member rwaksberg, who invited me to a meeting he had organized here with some friends & acquaintances of his (more details in my travelogue!!).
I must say they have some weird food in here... sandwiches are their specialty, but not just regular sandwiches... They have strange mixes of organic and healthy ingredients & dressings stuffed between 2 slices of...

Santropol is my favorite spot for sandwiches, and i mean big great healthy creative sandwiches. Near the mountain (Mont-Royal), there is plenty of choices for both vegetarians/vegans and meat lovers. With one of the best terrace in the neighborhood, time stop completely here in this quiet heaven.
A must try for everyone walking by.
Favorite Dish: Any sandwiche is incredible. The chili is also...

Best sandwiches ever. Can only eat half... sooo huge.
Used to be a lot better. Succcess has gotten to their heads. Indifferent service, sometimes with "attitude".
The most over-rated cool spot in Montreal. The place reaks of hippies.
This place was in full throttle when my mom was at university...and still is, more than ever! Straight from 1970, it's "granola" style, in all it's glory!
And It's one of the most fun places to go and have lunch!
You can also go in the evening, but as a meal, they only serve sandwiches (thick ones), two types of salads and a vegetarian home style chili.
It serves both vegetarians and...

Santropol has great sandwiches, salads and shakes. Visit on a nice day when you can sit outside on the patio. The local "hippies" hang out here, and service is a bit slow. If you're not in a hurry, this is a great place to relax and eat.
Un des incontournables pour les etudiants, surtout de McGill, qui l'avoisine. Un atmosphere interessant et des plats createurs. Un peu de jazz pour completer votre soiree.
A local took us here and said a lot of McGill students frequent the place. Great art deco atmosphere. Two blocks from all the happenings on Saint Laurent. The sandwiches are creative, delicious, and overzealous in serving size. However, for me the best was the dessert!!! I split a fruit pie slice and chocolate cake and both were out of this world!!
This is a very popular and inexpensive restaurant hidden in the heart of Montreal's Plateau district. Santropol is best known for their massive sandwiches and array of vegetarian food. The ambience is mellow and funky, and in the summer you can sit in the beautiful garden overflowing with greenery.
Favorite Dish: Killer Tomato Sandwich
This is an amazing little cafe with a beautiful inside decor and fantastic terrace in the back open in the warmer months. You eat next to a gorgeous garden and japanese pond complete with the fish. The food is light and healthy and different. Check this cafe out on the way to or from the Tam Tam Festival which is held in Mont Royal park every sunday in the summer.

Santropol is just one of the most unique places one can eat at in MTL. Aside from the crazy sandwiches which are their specialty (thick slices of soft black bread and crazy combinations of fruits, vegetables and meats), they also have a great chilli which they sometimes run out of, but for good reason - it's very filling and cheap, great for those on a budget. But that's not why one goes to... plus
Very nice place to go, and the have coffee that isn't made by exploited children... A nice terrasse, good food, tisanes, charming, quiet, veggie. Go on their website and check the History of the Café, and their photo album (you'll see the Café was an old house of Montréal).
The vegetables usually all come from their own garden.
Favorite Dish: Any Cream cheese sandwich.
Café Santropol
Nice place to finish an evening (close at 1 AM on week-end) in a super hospitable ambiance, a little granola. Serving also vegetarian food, fair trade organic coffees, herbal teas, etc...
Favorite Dish: The big sandwiches and carrot cake.
Amid a ramshackle decor of mismatched furnishings the eccentric Café Santropol serves gargantuan gourmet sandwiches to a crowd of students, bohemian types and a few tourists. The backyard terrace is perhaps its most delightful feature. No alcohol is served; try the fruit drinks and herbal teas.
Café Santropol is a Sandwiches and Cafe restaurant where most Menuism users came for fun with friends.
This delightful Mont-Royal eatery features excellent milkshakes, coffee, sandwiches and salads. Santropol has long been a favorite of locals and students. Affordable and creative sandwiches are the big draw, and there are numerous vegetarian options. Exceptional coffee as well.
