This bustling little restaurant doesn't have a lengthy menu, but it's doing something right: the dining room is usually filled to capacity for lunch and dinner. The secret is that Bullock's serves fish taken from Great Slave Lake -- trout, cod, pike, and whitefish -- in simple but delicious preparations. Go for the fish and chips, stay for the various fish chowders. The fish is always fresh and... more
My favorite place to eat in Yellowknife. Hands down.
The food is quite simply amazing. Some of the most (if not THE most) delicious fish you will ever have. They will tell you which fresh fish is available then you choose how you would like it: Deep fried, grilled or pan fried. If you are a fish and chips aficionado, you will love the elegant simplicity of the batter consisting of beer, baking...

Great ambiance and my meal was excellent! (chowder). A great moment spent with friends and local people.
Character place.
Writing every where on walls, tables, etc. Anything goes! Just dont grab a beer out of the fridge to serve yourself or else!
I had the arctic char deep fried. It was quite tasty and filling with the sides and bread but for the price, this place cant be a weekly dining option.
If you are in the knife though, it is a place on the bucketlist...

I wanted to type "hell no" as my first sentence for my check in but I mistakenly made it to"hell", so I came to write the review. I don't know if the fish is fresh but the chips aren't. There are some black spoiled-like stuff inside the potato. I knew the service won't be nice but the waitress there even can't remember what you order. It's not cool.
Phenomenal atmosphere and vibe. Very unique experience. The food was off the hook!! (Figuratively and literally). Thanks Renata!
So fresh! I saw the cook step out the back door for a minute and came back in with his fingers in the gills. Damn that's fresh!
We went based on the reviews on Tripadvisor. So glad we gave it a try!!!!from the outside, it looks like a little shack which is part of the charm! This place was packed! I loved my whitefish.....first time trying it and it was panfried in some incredible spices and butter and I was blown away with the flavour!!!!still remembering it... more
Neat rustic little spot. Nothing fancy that's for sure but the meal of white fish, fresh baked buns and homemade feta salad dressing was great. Worth the experience. I'll be back!
Best fish ever, fresh! Make sure you reserve a table, it is a bistro so it is noisy but what an experience.
A fun time to be sure. Bullocks' is usually very crowded, and the crowd is often rowdy and boisterous, and they'll draw you in to their jokes, insults and tales. Hey, this is the North! Great fish and chips, a wide variety of local fish available, done in a number of ways, almost too many choices. You can't go wrong... more
We walked in at 6:30 and were charmed by the casual, rustic atmosphere. In a few moments we were offered the only available seats, which were at the bar right in front of the cooking area. We readily agreed. (Who can turn down the chef's table?)
These turned out to be the best seats in the house. We were able to...

Great Fish & Chips!! Arctic Char is my favorite. Service with a friendly scowl, but really deep down they are wonderful people!! We’ve taken friends from across Canada and everyone raves about the fish! Pricy yes, but the fish is worth every $$, not sure the $10/bottle of wobbly pop is worth it. Love the place can’t wait for my... more
Service: Awesome family oriented. Food: AMAZINGLY HOMIE! Price: need work. Ambiance: messy but COOL!
This is a funny place, kind of a dive, but with fancy prices. The famous fish was very good, as it should be for about $30. It was served with hand cut (but average) fries and a simple salad. The sauces were a highlight, really exceptional. Service was uneven. Our table was dirty, never cleaned off from the previous customers... more
Insanely busy, loud & slow service BUT the cook was friendly & charmed us & the "writing on the wall" (literally) was fun to read while we waited. The fish was spectacular and we were glad we went. NOTE: not for people who would be offended by rude bumper stickers etc ;)
Great fish but very expensive. C@!%!y attitude of the wait staff is supposed to be "funny" or appealing. This place sucks. Spend your tourist dollars here if you want but you would be better to spend it elsewhere.
Don't take your kids. Apparently it is OK to use profanity to tell customers off. HA HA (not!)
And having the cook...

Don't get me wrong! They had the best fish and chips that I have ever eaten. But the price was outrageous! I spent almost $30 for the fish and chips and that was lunch! In addition, I had to take a taxi to and from town and that was $10 one way, so I actually paid $50 for the meal!... more
Bullock's is one of those "must see" bistros that everyone in town talks about. Their fish is the best in town. What they don't tell you is that it is EXTREMELY expensive! If you are in town for the first time, you should check it out - but probably only once, and be prepared to pay a hefty price. We... more
Vacationing in Yellowknife I knew I had to try this restaurant out after reading all the reviews. I wasn't sure what we would be getting into after reading the negative ones, but I can tell you now, I have no idea what some other people were talking about.
It is very small, so I can see it being uncomfortable if...

I think this is one of the best places ever to eat. Never have I had a trout taste so Tasty......looking forward to returning for another dinner in the future.
What a place! Just got back to Ontario from visiting friends in Yellowknife for the weekend. While I was there they insisted we go to Bullock's for dinner-something they do whenever out of town guests arrive. It doesn't look like much from the outside, so don't judge by that. We walked in and managed a spot at the counter-definitely better... more
When I visit Yellowknife, there's no question where I go for dinner the first night. Bullocks Bistro, every time. Humble atmosphere, gorgeous view paired with fresh local fish and "uniquely" friendly service. After you've eaten way too much, you can take a short walk up the hill to the pilot's monument to take in some more fantastic views of downtown... more
This place is always busy, get in early or wait in line.
battered and fried cod was excellent. Pan fried walleye was way overspiced; why ruin such a delicate flavour? Bison steak good; asked for medium-rare but it came blue. Steak had with same spice as walleye. Yes, Yellowknife is remote, but the prices here are expensive.
Poor sanitation, no...

OMG!!!! Of course, the place is of course very special on it's history and location. Don't expect the Ritz carlton. I sat at the bar/counter. I watched the lady cooking everything and we chat during my dinner. I felt at home, talking about life and how is the world doing. Had Arctic char, it came with salad and fries, this... more
I love this restaurant! They have a great patio and the best local fish you can get in Yellowknife. Although we see many bad comments abt this restaurant, we still wanna try it personally. It wasn't that bad though!
We came there a bit early so we didn't have to wait. It was full house later on. The restaurant is small with open-kitchen so everyone can see the cooking. Cool, you can see written messages and monies all over...

we had grilled Arctic char, pan-fried pickerel, and whitefish battered and deep fried. Nice fresh chips- could have been a bit more well done, fresh salad with two yummy homemade dressings. very well done
The bread smelled and tasted like booze cheap. My girlfriend's "fish platter kabob" thing was all White-fish aside for two Trout belly bits. My steak was comparable to gamy Hubba-Bubba chewing gum. The lettuce shred was a slight tint of oxidized brown, which was surprising because it came with a fare bit of water beneath it. The salad dressings were... more
This place is a classic. We were told to expect surly service as their trademark, but it was anything but. Robust maybe eg when you are told your time's up, but never surly.

Everyone warns you that an order of fish n chips here is $40. Well it's actually more like $29. I went with two other guys and we spent $60 each; for a dinner, two beers AND a buffalo steak. Casual & friendly environment & service, OK food. Great for the experience. They usually close on Sundays, but was opened today, but closed on the following two days. Better call ahead to make sure they're open before going.

This is the place to be if you like fish. The menu is short but everything is excellent. Do go at lunch time as dinner can be very crowded and you may not be allowed in. Service is what you expect froma bistro.
We went there at around 4pm to avoid the big crowd. There was no problem finding a seat at that hour but we need to wait for about 20 mins before we could order. During waiting, the restaurant offered us their signature "cinnamon bun" FOC. We ordered the Kingfisher platter. It was an assortment of fish of that day. It... more
So many things I could say about this place...We had linner here on our first afternoon before going out to the lightshow and I almost didn't make the shuttle that night due to GI challenges resulting from this great tasting meal. The atmosphere is awful, the service slow, but the grilled char or bison steak make you forget everything else. This is a "don't miss" experience for anyone visiting Yellowknife.
Read great reviews and may be my expectation was too high, the place was unique and fun, but the food was expensive and the quality was so so. The Kingfisher platter included cod, char and white fish that day. My friend had the same, one pan fried, one grilled, served w fresh bread, salad and fries for $29 + tax... more
Given that this is basically a fish n'chip shack, the $40 main courses are definitely over-priced. But I wouldn't have missed it! The atmosphere was terrific and the fish was absolutely delicious. Come early in the evening: by 6:30pm they were packed and turning people away.
We were recommended to come here by our B&B owner and I had already read good reviews online. It has a very causal atmosphere; lots of writing on the walls, and photos and business cards of visitors. A serving of fresh baked bread was served to us right away. We ordered the kingfisher platter which was an assortment of local... more
Bullock's Bistro is an experience in so many ways. It is beyond fun to read all the bumper stickers and quotes that adorn the cooking area - which you are smack dab in the middle of, by the way. Loved the eclectic atmosphere and casual feel. Mismatched dishes and cutlery, postcards and random travellers photos and messages posted all over the walls and ceiling. And the sour dough... more
Read the reviews about this place so went in knowing not to expect much from the service but hoped that the food was good. Tried the halibut and the reindeer stew. Restaurants in Yellowknife are expensive. You just need to accept that your sense of value needs to be adjust accordingly. With that in mind, we had an excellent meal at Bullock's which was the highlight of our visit to Yellowknife.

Eclectic decor but very clean. Fish is amazing--staff is friendly.
Cinnamon bun was wondeful on a cold afternoon.
Pickerel and Arctic char were well prepared and seasoned. We waited 40 min after ordering before food arrived and the bill for the 4 entrees and 4 beers for a party of 4 was what you'd expect to pay for 3 courses at a top eatery in SF.
Not many choices in Yellowknife, good fish but expect to pay handsomely...

Cod from the nearby lake was awesome fried (melts so nicely). The more expensive Arctic char we had was not fantastic, still prefer salmon. Salad served with homemade dressing was light and a good compliment to the fried fishes.
The bread that came before the meal was soft and fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside which is a great combination and really good with the butter.

We were three guests on a Tuesday evening. It was packed with customers and a real buzz. Other guests handed our meals to us across the bar from the open kitchen. And why not? The guests enjoyed it! How are you supposed to feel when you spend $40 on a meal of Arctic char, homemade fries, and a salad, in an old cabin of a restaurant on a chilly night in January? Pretty good, in my view. Straight off the charts for the best fried fish that I've ever eaten in a restaurant. Bullocks is run by Sam and Renate Bullock. The food was greasy and not particularly inspiring (I had the pan-fried pickerel with a salad on the side). There were a lot of happy groups surrounding us, but I'd recommend just getting a beer here and having your dinner... more
This restaurant was amazing. I can't believe the negative reviews for this place--clearly they didn't get the joke about the service. Roll with the attitude--it's part of the package.

Websites and locals both ranted about how great this place was, so it was on our "must experience" list during our brief stint in Yellowknife. Too expensive, bad service and not worth the wait. The fish was really good but it was not worth the 5-star prices they charged. Dinner for two was $80 with 2 bottles of water.
Funky place, funky vibe and atmosphere but quite expensive for what you got.
My coworker and I both ordered the Arctic Char which came with potatoes and a side salad, and each got a soft drink, total came to $90! Which even for YK, it's a bit extreme.

Okay, let me clear up a few things about Bullocks coming from a locals point of view:
It is hands down the best, freshest fish in Yellowknife. Besides maybe that guy who sells fish out of his truck in front of KFC. (not even kidding, that stuff is fantastic)
Bring a business card, photo, crude bumper sticker, expired ID, Sharpie marker or whatever else you want to help deface the interior and...

Such good fish , but the women who works there is slightly on the ... Rude side but the man who works there is rather nice . Expensive food but it's worth it for the freshness
This is a great restaurant. The person who speaks of "low quality fish" must be an unscrupulous competitor or something. I live in California as you can see from my other reviews, and I have absolutely no ulterior motive in saying this is a fantastic fish joint, with superb fish and huge portion size. I had grilled Arctic Char, btw. This is the best restaurant I have encountered in Northern... more
Expensive food and poor service are the two impressions I took away when I left this place. If you are looking for soggy fries and deep fried low quality fish, look no further! A lot of people rave about the rustic and historic charm of this restaurant but that does not make up for the poor service. Steer clear.
The food is good but the service is horrible. How hard is it to hire someone who is a buffer from the cranky people who work there? If I hear one more person say, "That's part of the charm" I will choke slam them and put them in the figure four.
The last three times I ate there it took forever so that I was actually drinking my own saliva and tears. At that point, I would have eaten a baby...
