Our experience at the restaurant was mediocure. Expectiation going there were high, however, at the end we expectation were not met. Over priced for quality of food serviced.
I have dined at Blue sevearal times over the past year or so and i have to admit that it is one of my favorite restaraunts in the city. The fresh seafood there is second to none and since expanding with the bar it has become more of a dining experience. Great staff whom are very friendly and knowledgable as well.
Took my wife and family out for Sunday brunch in December. No doubt the resturant was busy, but we were in no hurry. We had expected that, knowing it was a "fine dining" resturant... but at times we felt ignored, for the simple things, like coffee, or how are things. The server got our meal wrong twice and in one case charged it on our bill. The food, was OK. With our expectation of this resturant pretty high. it never lived up to the hype.
Blue on Water underwent a favourable transformation in 2009. It added a smart new martini bar after acquiring the space east of the restaurant. This allowed for more seating in the restaurant and an energized atmosphere. I enjoyed their "fillet of fresh cod, perfectly cooked, enhanced by the introduction of a tincture of anise-flavoured Sambuca. Grilled salmon never tasted better with a topping of caramelised onions and, get this, figs. The sweet addition made the flavours of the salmon sing. Chicken breast, one of the hardest foods to cook properly, was as delicious as I've tasted. The lemon pepper glaze, as always, was a most suitable seasoning to draw out the freshly roasted flavour of the bird."
A modern boutique hotel with stylish contemporary interiors, Blue on Water is the essence of its name—a calm, comfortable lodging with a whiff of the Atlantic when the windows are open. The trendy restaurant of the same name and bar are also draws, with natural flavors and a simple approach to organic fare. The pride the owners feel in this continually updated property shows in the stylish... more
Blue on Water is in the very heart of the tourist area of downtown St John's, one street up from the harbour. The restaurant and bar on the ground floor are hip and popular, with a bright and modern design. The breakfast menu ( breakfast not included) is creative if pricey. We stayed for 3 nights in a double queen... more
Went there for dinner with my boyfriend. The menu was very confusing and the waitress didn't seen to know anything about the specials. Decided to just drink our mojitos and go somewhere else. They were rather expensive and I wouldn't mind only they were terrible. They taste like lemon juice and that's it. When I told the server this she... more
My husband and I recently stayed at Blue on Water for one night. We had a stopover at the St. John's airport and our flight home was delayed for a day. We'd been to the restaurant many times for their fabulous brunch, so we thought we'd give the hotel a try. Best idea ever! The service we received was above... more
This was our first restaurant visit in St John's and our first exposure to scruncheons. Apparently scruncheons are served as an accompaniment to many dishes in Newfoundland, high salt intake but tasty little tidbits. The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere quite enjoyable. The food service was slow, they had a few large groups. We were not in a... more
Not sure what happened to this place. The service is still friendly enough but the kitchen has become so slow that even ordering a breakfast sandwich is a 45 min wait at times (only half full on my visit). Still a good gathering hole in the evenings but if u are looking for a quick brunch or lunch location keep... more
To start with the restaurant is so welcoming and bright. The décor is beautiful and light giving a nice cheerful atmosphere. The staff is wonderful and accommodating. I enjoyed the Salmon which was out of this world! My husband had the Cod and enjoyed every bit. My daughter had the Cesar Salad and couldn't get enough.

Was searching for a place for breakfast after and saw that this place was hopping so we thought we would give it a try. Great breakfast, checked out the wine list while eating breakfast and decided to come back for dinner. Great wine selection. Amazing food! Had their breakfast. I found it a tad bit overpriced for the value of the food. There are much better breakfast spots in St. John's for a better price. My experience made a reconsider coming to this restaurant for dinner on my next trip to St. John's
I ordered the special and was so happy I did. The halibut on a sweet potato hash was one of the best meals I had on my vacation to the east coast. Wish I had more time to go back. Check it out ... you won't regret it.
We recently enjoyed a good dinner at Blue on Water, with local craft beers and a local cod dish that was the special that evening. The food was fresh and well-prepared but the table service and or kitchen service was very, very slow. We waited at least 35 minutes for our entrees. At the time, the restaurant was mostly full.
We were there for a small dinner as we were not very hungry but the appies of Lobster Dip, Duck Spring Rolls and Waldorf Salads were all great. The service was very, very good. The wine options were plentiful and very good.
The food was quite good here. Simple, yet flavourful. A large breakfast selection on the menu. A good safe choice in St. John's.
Food was really good, server was very attentive and friendly, enjoyed our meal, menu gave a good selection.
The food was good but truthfully, The Keg steaks are better. This place was overpriced - would definitely skip it next time
I would highly recommend it for lunch. Menu and service was great. Food was way better than I expected for a pub.
Some of the best meals I've had in St. John's have been at Blue on Water. That being said, I've also had some of the worst dining experiences there. The food quality and service are unpredictable. The service can be incredibly slow sometimes, and the servers can be extremely rude. Some act as if they are doing you a favour... more
Server was rude and slow. If you don't like serving then maybe you should get a different job. Food took way to long. Was way too expensive. Food was good though.
If you get to this area this is a must stay place. The staff is great, friendly and so accommodating. the room was wonderful, food was excellent, I can not say enough about this boutique hotel and staff. keep up the good work and we will definetly stay here again when we get back to the area.

Two words: truffle fries. They are absolutely amazing. The atmosphere is really nice, especially when the windows are open. The colours are lovely and the staff are kind.
Although the rooms are nicely appointed. As other reviewers have stated, it is a very noisy hotel and we could hear the bar til way past midnight as well as other guests moving around in their rooms. On top of that, the only window (more of a skylight) had no blinds so the bright sun came shining in on us... more
Stopped at Blue on Water for lunch before going out on a boat tour of the sound. Not an extensive menu but packed with attractive offerings. I chose the lobster wrap and Waldorf salad and couldn't have been happier with the selection. Very high quality, presented by a congenial server with excellent knowledge of the downtown area and great sense... more
This was our first time at Blue, and when we walked through the door we were pleasantly surprised by the modern decor, it was beautiful. We stood in the entry for about 5 minutes and watched 3 servers walk past us, look at us, acknowledge us, but make no effort to see if we needed a table or had a... more
I have had brunch there a few times and really liked it! So, I went for an evening meal, hoping for the same experience, but I was very disappointed. I had the soup which was cold in spots and my friend returned his meal (rabbit). Limited choice of beer as well. In future, I'll stick to their brunches.
Rating this after giving this place a second chance: Bland food coupled with slow, long, wait for your food to arrive.
Cod tongue that is. Followed by some delicious seafood chowder and a main course of pan seared cod. Dessert was orange and cranberry bread pudding that was equally as good. There are two sides to this restaurant, one side bar, one side dining, food is the same on both sides depending on the mood your in. Service was good. The... more
We had an excellent dinner. The pan-seared cod, fresh off the boat that day, was perfect. So was the cod tongue appetizer. They just melted in our mouths. The service was very good - prompt and professional. Our group of 5 enjoyed the banter with the servers. The desserts weren't as exceptional but who cared - we were so happy... more
For the prices, you would expect better. The dining area is not that large, but you would think it was from the quality of the service. For a dinner that was supposed to last around an hour, we were there for over 2, with 45 gaps minutes between courses and long lulls even to get a drink refill. The food... more
In town on a business meeting so 15 people went there. Service was excellent-Emily was great! Most meals were fine, but 2 who ordered Haddock found it a bit dry. Was told by one of our party the steak he had was awesome, & this is spoken by a native Albertan so fine comments indeed. Would definitely be back!
Had breakfast here on recommendation of owner Christian's
Pub on George Street. No disappointment here. Pleasant server early morning, food excellent. They prepare their own salt fish cakes which were simply the besti've had in 50 years when it would be a staple for me - yes I'm a NEWFY, now come from away.

We had a group dinner at Blue on Water and had our own room downstairs. The choice of food was great and I had a hard time deciding. Stopped in here recently for dinner while in town for work.
We went early so it was not busy; we also did not have the service issues some people mention on here.

Took the sales team there for dinner. Service was great and loved the new decor. The food was below expectations. Been there before but will consider other places
Overall a bit of a hodge podge. Some things were really good; our waiter was very friendly and attentive, the decor is quite nice, the dessert was pretty good. Others were excellent; the new shrimp tempura was amazing. And a few things were just so so; the mussels in beer and bacon (too salty but otherwise blah, uninteresting bread, the... more
My boyfriend and I stayed here a week ago for our anniversary. The rooms are very small. I loved the decor. The furnishings and accessories were beautiful. My evening dining experience here was good and bad. The appetizers were great. For our main course, we both got the duck and couldn't even cut through it with our knives. Very nice upscale restaurant in downtown St. John's. Recommend reservations, especially on weekends. All dished sound very delicious and interesting. Lots of great food in this city. So service can make the difference. The staff here are super friendly. Sabrina was the best waitress I've had anywhere. No contest. Very good duck and also goat cheese appetizer. But the service made the night.
Stopped by Blue on Water (bar side) for the first time after hearing many (mostly good) reviews and was very impressed by the atmosphere of the place. Just tried "Blue on Water" for a breakfast and could not fault the food, the ambiance and the service. Price was reasonable too.
There are not too many hotel boutiques where you can get the quality and service that you get at Blue on Water. The premisis are amazing, tub and showers were divine (and I just had a standard room), beds were fluffy and inviting. The rate was phenominal considering the location and what I received.

Went to this restaurant on recommendation of some people. My husband and I both

Had heard great things and decided to give it a try. Complimentary bread, nice but very , could not eat. Calamari, too much salt and pepper, unbearable to eat. Gnocci, swimming in oil and no taste whatsoever. Steak was tough and tasteless however the potato wedges were alright. Very long wait between courses.
My experience echoed previous reviews I collected. Hit or miss and mine was a near miss. For the price I did expect better. I had the special of the day which was a pan seared halibut. The filet was thick and cooked perfectly. I have rarely had a halibut filet as good as this one. Can't forget to mention that the cod cheeks appetizer was also really good...didn't have to leave St. John's without having cod cheeks.
I went to brunch at this restaurant with some friends. I thought it was very cheap food (brunch with tea was $16)....good service....overall good experience. No complaints.

I’d like to be able to leave a real rating, but I have no idea what the food is like. My friend and I tried to go in for lunch and the ever-so-cool, Top Model wannabe hostess not only failed to greet us or do anything that a hostess generally does; she looked at me, looked at my friend, kind of smirked, and walked away to chat with a co-worker. Fool me once shame on you…fool me twice shame on me. C@!p food every time. You would get better service from a bunch of teenagers and they would do a better job in the kitchen too!
Full of arrogant yuppies including the servers. The wine and booze was great but that is because they didn’t make it. Wonder what will be in there in a couple of years from now?
Have only eaten breakfast/brunch here. Very good and very decently priced. Highly recommend for a breakfast spot! Service was good and the food was delicious. However, do not salt your hashbrowns – they must salt them well before hand! (They tend to be busy, however, so I suggest making a reservation, even for breakfast).
I see a lot of negative comments about the wait staff but I wanted to say that I found the waitress that served our table last night was attentive, friendly and accommodating. I went to Blue On Water for the first time on my birthday a couple days ago. I haven’t been to many “upscale” restaurants in St. John’s so was interested to see how this one compared to the ones I’ve been in the States where I lived for years.
Went to Blue. Big lunch out.
I arrived earlier than my partner. I had been shopping downtown as we live around the bay and was not dressed to the hilt but was willing to spend.
I got seated in the back corner. I was practically in the kitchen. I looked around and there was a sweet young couple shoved in the corner next to me despite many empty tables. I asked to be moved.
Food was excellent....

Just back from a $170 meal. Had expected better. When I asked for medium-well lamb I was told that it may not be tender – my problem right? Extremely rude bartender, poor service, and bad food (quail I could make better at home and a salad so salty I couldn’t eat it, and no, the waitress didn’t ask if there was anything wrong with it as she took away my barely touched plate). Won’t be back.
Typical snobby Bistro, where everyone in here is too good to work here. I am just amazed why places like this always hire little tarts based on their looks, instead of their serving skills and customer relations abilities. They figure that if all the staff are model material, then the customers will be impressed. What they don’t understand is, this type of individual has had everything handed... more
My Lord. The food is hit or miss, but the one thing that gets my goat here are the servers. Constantly texting, and if you happen to ask for something, they appear with a look of disdain upon their hipster faces…
Had brunch there today for the second time. The first time was great, so I decided to go back with my sister. Terrible! The food was ok. The best meal that I have EVER eaten was in this restaurant (Blue on Water). The people were pleasant and the service was great. We had a table of 5 for dinner and everyone at the table agreed that the meal was excellent. I went again for lunch. There was three of us and once again, the lunch was excellent.
The food is generally good however, they shouldn't serve burnt toast - I wouldn't expect that in such a restaurant.
The service was appalling and included race discrimination. The food was a little odd.
During my short stay in St. Johns, I enjoyed three extrodinary meals at Blue On Water. The food was beautifully prepaired and presented with a taste and satifaction to match.
